After finding a table for 5 in an empty restaurant and with no reserved sign on it we sat down. There were staff all around and some chatting at the bar. After 15m a staff member came over and told us the table was reserved. Then he told us there was an hour wait for food. We said how long was the wait when they were busy. Disgusted we left. On the way out there were other people complaing about their food to the staff who looked as tho they couldnt care less. What terrible place. Avoid like the plague... just read the bad reviews of this Chef and Brewer disaster. You have been warned

Landlord Vic Long built this pub on the coast at Portishead in the 1970s and has run it ever since. He is a gentleman and a local legend, and the pub has raised considerable funds for local charities. It's a large place with a lovely garden, lots of seating inside, and draught Bass from the barrel. I've never eaten there, so can't comment on the food. Large car park outside.

Had just left the Karting at Weston Lodge, there was 9 of us willing to spend good money for food and some juices/drinks. Got there at 13:25 and from the off, you felt very unwelcome. Landlord was rude, unhappy that he was going to be getting a large order for food as he was making it clear that they close at 14:30. The landlord has basically through away a group who would be spending over £200 on food etc but glad we didn’t stay, we left and went to the White Hart at Weston in gordano instead who were more than happy to serve us and far better hosts

Very old school. Don't expect up to the minute decor or an extensive menu. This is not a theme pub, it's not dressed up to be something it's not. It's a good, honest pub where you will get a pint that's as good as you'll get anywhere. Food served lunchtime only. Big car park. Stunning views over the Bristol Channel. Very hospitable landlord. Very reasonable prices. Pay by cash or card. Nowhere better to sit and watch the sun go down over a glass of your favourite tipple.

It was a good pub, very quiet. The food was good. It is a very old fashioned pub, only being active at certain points of the day, food can only really be ordered at lunch time. I had scampi and my family had haddock - it was wonderful.

The elderly gentlemen behind the bar was extremely rude to me when all i asked is if we could sit anywhere. he snapped at me that it was a pub!! Then i asked if the gammon came with pineapple or egg, and he snapped at me again. Many reviewers have missed the point. This is a straightforward local with a landlord who tells it as it is. You want food, choose from the menu board, it's not difficult. Vic is a traditional landlord who serves a great pint of Bass and simple food at a reasonable price. We think he's great.

A pub with character! ❤️ I walked in and met Vic, a true gentleman who’s 80 years old and runs the pub since 1973, when he started building it with his ownhands. We went here on Xmas day for a drink with family. They were open from 11am -1pm. There was a sign on the bar saying they closed at 1pm but it didn’t specify whether it was last orders at 1pm, or everyone out at 1pm. So I very politely asked which it was (whilst being served). His response was that I was stupid and all I had to do was read the sign. I said I had read the sign and didn’t understand which (hence my question). His response again was that he was fed up of being asked stupid questions and that I should ask his wife. So so rude!! Not a stupid question but a very hostile response. I will never go here again.

What a shame the manager/landlord is so miserable and rude as the pub itself is very quirky and has lovely views. All we wanted was a hot drink and were told ‘this is a pub. If you want that you need to go to a restaurant or cafe’. We immediately left after thanking him for his ‘help’. Not sure what world he lives in where pubs don’t serve hot drinks. Stopped by at 14:30pm today, perhaps a minute late. The pub closed at 14:30pm and the lady at bar seemingly happy not to bother serving another customer. Was told that, according to her clock, it was now 14:35pm and proceeded to walk away. Wasn't interested to know that we had made a special journey to the Ship. Plenty of open space and seating but only half-dozen tables in use. Perfect time to enjoy a drink outside in the sun but alas it wasn't to be. You can have too many customers on a late Sunday afternoon even when it's only 14:30pm and the pub is blessed with a large outside seating area. Will we visit again?

I don't know how he has survived without someone punching him. The way he treats his customers is appalling, particularly new ones that aren't aware of his weird behaviour. Standard Costa with fairly friendly employees but it is SO loud! Even when it's not busy it seems like the room is packed because of the noise; I think they could do something with noise insulation from the roof, because from my point of view it's a real turn off. I would choose to go elsewhere, even out of my way, to avoid having to have a shouted conversation. It's also a very mixed clientele - there are quite a lot of families and small children so this might be a factor. There are outdoor seats, but only usable on rare days due to UK weather... If they had some green space it might be nicer!

What a friendly and welcoming pub in every sense. I dropped in on the walk home from an afternoon out with my girlfriend and we had a lovely drink together before continuing on our way. Today I visited alone during a bike ride and was made really welcome by the staff and regulars. They even let me bring my bike in the bar, ( it was a week day lunchtime). I had some well kept Butcombe with a fresh, tasty cheese and onion roll. Good thick cheese filling and sliced onion. Near enough to be a local so I will return. Maybe I will bring the fold up next time. I will need to sample the meals too. Thank you for a pleasant hour or so staff and customers.
