Visited yesterday lunchtime with a friend. The pub was quiet but the welcome from the guy behind the bar was warm and friendly. We confirmed that food was available despite being quiet and ordered drinks. We sat next to a window to enjoy the amazing view (and the torrential rain) while we waited for our food to arrive. It came promptly and both meals were excellent. Tasty. Fresh and good portions. Definitely worth a visit and we’ll definitely be back. It’s a gem.

Booked for Sunday teatime to be told @5.30 all food thrown away as they did not have my online booking despite email confirmation and that ovens on self clean so no food. 2 other walkins followed in same. Went previously to be told no rice for curry after it was served with chips and another item was not available after order was taken, so that came after everyone was finished. Used to be a good place but 2 other pubs nearby far more reliable and as good so won't be going back after at least 5 years patronage, even during COVID when we picked up take away.

Been visiting the ship a lot since it’s been taken over and loved it to begin with, quality was great but has just declined more and more over time. I used to claim this was the best Sunday dinner in Gateshead to all my friends, but couldn’t recommend at all it now. Used to be lovely roasties, home made gravy with thick slabs of belly pork with crackling but now it’s more like getting a school dinner. Thin slices of pork with no crackling, fake gravy and soggy potatoes. Really really disappointed as a loyal customer. Really really poor standard for the price now.

We always loved calling in here for food and drinks. Staff are friendly and courteous. On a fine day it’s just lovely to sit outside and enjoy the view. But I felt compelled to knock a star or two off since the introduction of soft plastic cups when drinking outside. I believe there was a bank holiday incident (rowdy drunks breaking glass?), and I can certainly understand the owners feeling a need to prevent recurrence. Perhaps sturdier, recycled plastic cups will be provided in the future. But I, for one, did not enjoy my wine served in a flimsy beaker! I suppose with music turned up loud we could pretend we’re at a festival …

Went on Tuesday 19th March with my wife for the lunchtime special. There was a big party of ex teachers who had descended on the pub with no warning so the young man at the bar was rushed off his feet trying to accommodate everyone ordering drinks and food. No matter he very quickly took our order and it was only a short time before it came. We came last week and I have to say that both meals each time have been very good and excellent value for what you get. Top marks for the meal and also for the young man who was on his own but managed to look after all the customers. No marks to the large party of ex teachers who did not have the curtesy to ring up to let the Ship know of their pending arrival which might have helped the staff. Common sense and arrogance comes to mind when businesses like yourself have to manage staff levels. Well done to the staff on this day☺️👍

2nd visit after a dire experience last year. Decided to give it another go. Garlic mushroom starter was tasty and well presented. Main course was a mixed bag. Roast pork loin was tender and tasty. Yorkshire pudding ok. Frozen roasties and lots of tasteless mash. Veg lacked taste and overcooked. Roast carrots were nice. Gloopy gravy. Service was a bit patchy. Could offer table service for drinks when eating in restaurant. Wasn't asked if everything was ok when we paid. Wouldn't recommend even though lots of customers in. Nicer food in other local establishments.

Unfortunately, during our Sunday lunch, there was a choking incident. Thankfully, another diner helped the guy and dislodged the object that was causing the choke. In my opinion, a staff member on duty should always be trained in case this happens and to help in this situation, instead of just standing there. Standard slow service and ordered a cappuccino and a latte came with a thick milk skin on the top.

Have called at the Ship for Beer on a number of occasions. And now it's been all refurbished we decided to call and have food. But what a disappointment I went for the burger, which was awful. Cheap frozen burgers from Iceland l bet, which had no taste. In fact, l left it as it was that bad. Also, the chips cheap frozen, which were burnt and like gravel. Mrs.meal Pie has basic served with a few peas and packet mashed potato. It looked horrible. Come on, guys, you spent all that money on the interior and have great bar staff. At least pay a chef who will cook decent food.

What a great summer evening we enjoyed here at The Ship! Charming bar-person Millie gave us a warm welcome and was a perfect host throughout our stay. Having savoured our drinks in the lovely beer garden overlooking a marvellous panorama of countryside, we ventured indoors for our meals. These were real treats - my wife describing her Caesar salad as 'the best ever' - and we were delighted to meet Chef Dawn and express our appreciation of her delicious food. There is much to admire about this pretty country pub and a visit is certainly recommended!

Really disappointing visit. I ordereded the vegan option Sunday lunch, the guy at the till confirmed it on the system and when it came out it had a Yorkshire pudding so I knew it wasn't vegan. I asked the girl who served if she can check it's vegan. She came back 2 seconds later with the same dinner without the Yorkshire pudding and said it was. As soon as I tasted the mashed potato you could taste the butter. Really concerning that it could've been for itolerance or allergy reasons. Some of the roasties were raw and the butternut squash pastry had a bit of a spice kick to it, which was weird for a Sunday lunch. The girl who was serving me was lovely about it when I told her and she made sure it was refunded. It was also disappointing to see there was no music on either. We used to love the place and was really looking forward to having a nice Sunday lunch and listening to some music in a place that is dog-friendly. Really hope to see the place return to it's former glory, but based on Sunday's visit I cannot recommend it.

No offer of a refund for over cooked rock hard food . Very disappointing customer service. So poor Mrs b had to wait till we got to our hotel and get something to eat. Needless tonsayb2 girls serving both over 100 heads all over the gardens and 20 inside. Needs sorting and could be a great place with its views and range of food and drink.

Great views and selection of bar meals. Only disappointment was the onion rings. They were swimming in cooking oil when they arrived at the table. You could see the oil dropping off them when you lifted them out of the container. Looking inside the container you could see the oil on the bottom. All you could taste was the cooking oil.

Popped in on Thursday for a few drinks, 3rd time we’ve been since it was taken over. Gin was lovely. Shane it was really quiet , few people sat outside. We were the only ones inside then another table of 2 came in. We had 2 of the small plates to nibble on. The belly pork was tasty but 2 pieces were pure fat no meat on so was a shame . We had the tacos which were lovely but far too much hot sauce on, it nearly choked me and I had to run to the loo as I was nearly sick through coughing. Just unfortunate I think that they put too much sauce on, wouldn’t put me off going back tho. Fancy trying a Sunday lunch there. Barman was friendly .

Good bits staff were lovely table was clean, hubbies gammon huge portion gammon was lovely only let down the chips were really soft. My fajitas looked impressive when they came out but it was mostly onions and peppers what very little chicken there was it was far too over spiced not as in hot but the coating of spices what really spoilt it for me was the salsa and sour cream dip the salsa tasted like tomato ketchup with vintages added and there was lumps in my sour cream. I will try again before I right it off as everyone can have a bad day.

This evening we visited this establishment. Regret doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling we had when we left. A simple order of two lasagnes, pie, and a child’s chicken nuggets somehow managed to take over two hours to reach our table. When the bar staff were asked where this food was, it hadn’t even reached the kitchen. The excuse was that the young girl who served us was new to the restaurant, but no experienced member of staff noticed that we had been sat outside waiting for over two hours for food. Hospitality is lost at this place. Might I add, the children’s play area needs some care. When the food arrived I’d love to say that I enjoyed it however, there was no taste. The lasagne was burnt, the garlic bread was buttered bread, we ordered additional chips thinking That it wasn’t served with chips. It was, and the server chose not to tell us. The pie was all pastry and no filling and to top things off, we weren’t even offered a free drink. A young man did give us £14 back from the meal but for me, I’ll never return. An 8 year old was too tired to eat her food that arrived at 8:15 after being ordered around 6:15, none of the adults enjoyed their meals. It would be an OKAY place to drink for the view, and I say that loosely because who even knows if the drinks would arrive at your table. Overall, go to the Engine Room further along the road. You can’t eat outside but the food is LOVELY.

First time visit to see an old friend who lived close by. The bar was strangely very empty for a Friday lunchtime but ok, strange times we live in. We were immediately advised of a list of things that weren’t available on the (not extensive) menu – again I expect it’s down to the current level of demand. We ordered Cumberland sausages and mash however when it arrived it was uninspiring and tasteless. The mash looked like a thick paste probably prepared from a packet and sausages looked more boiled than grilled or fried. The peas were ok but also had little taste. The one (and only?) member of staff was very pleasant and helpful and did his best under the circumstances. On the plus side there was little issue with social distancing as there were only 6 or so people in the whole pub at any one time. I hope for the new owners sake that the world gets back to normal as soon as possible but in any event they will need to up their game to get clients returning.

We had a beautiful meal here a few years ago and have always said we would return for food, so when deciding where to have lunch for the last day of the EOTHO scheme we thought we would try again. I messaged via Facebook to book our table and was sent across a slightly disappointing limited menu, I would have been put off right then if it wasn’t for the sausage on the kids menu for my fussy child. We arrived just before 12 when they start serving food and there was only a couple more tables in, Barman quite quickly came and offered us drinks and gave a menu but those drinks were the only things that we were getting quickly today. After that everything seemed to take a while. We had ordered cheeseburger, hot dog then kids sausage and chicken nuggets meals. We found the kids meals were a decent size more than enough for our 2 however adult meals not so big, not a problem for me but my partner ended up eating half my burger because his portion was too small. By the time we had finished there was a few more tables full but still quite a few free aswell so not too busy, and 2 more staff in however I sat and waited at least half an hour for someone to come and clear the plates away. By this point I was dying to leave as I don’t like just sitting around with 2 young kids but I stayed as I wanted to let them have their ice creams. So ordered those and a sticky toffee pudding. Ice creams didn’t take long, when the sticky toffee pudding came about 10 mins after the ice creams I asked for the bill and just to pay it straight away as I didn’t wana make the kids sit around any longer. £17.50 on the scheme but I would’ve been very disappointed if I had spent £35 on that food. Also a bit disappointed that the play area was closed for the kids as they said they needed to wait for more restrictions to be lifted however all other parks can open now so not sure what’s being waited for. Also have to add no details were taken for track and trace, didn’t even realise until today or I would’ve mentioned it.

I recently visited as it’s under new management with my daughter and son. Myself and son ordered steak about £30.00 for 2 with peppercorn sauce. We both ordered medium. Steak looked lovely and the trimmings were all good. My son had a couple of chews of his steak as did I and it was really overcooked and unbelievably chewy and more well done. I didn’t want to complain so just left it, manager came over asked how it was and I told him it was overcooked and inedible. His response. No one else had complained, but thanks for your feedback! I’ll pass your comments onto the butcher! I was a bit perplexed! Had the butcher cooked the steak? Anyway he didn’t offer a refund on the meal we got 2 deserts for free. So all in all expensive chips! We won’t be back. No atmosphere at all. Poor food. Strange customer service!

Had our table booked for a family of 4 (2 adults 2 kids) for 6.pm, we arrived on time and was given a table, within minutes we were moved to another table, a table of 4 next to us had an issue with their service and staff and got up and left leaving a full table of untouched drinks. We then got our second table, after being ignored by the staff for 25mins and not being offered drinks or a menu the kids got too hungry and thirsty and we were forced to leave and find food and drinks elsewhere. I've never experienced anything as bad as that. The management/staff are a complete shambles. I'll not be back there again.

We drove past this pub last week and decided to go in. I’ll start by saying the view is gorgeous and will definitely be returning in the summer. When we went into the pub we were greeted by a member of staff who was very polite and gave us some menus. Service was quick and steady which is always good, we didn’t realise how big the portions were and ordered a starters and mains, but never mind we will just know for next time. I did feel a bit sorry for the girl behind the bar as she was by herself, in the middle of serving a few customer and the kitchen staff were ringing the bell over and over for her and eventually came out to tell her, however, she was already busy and couldn’t leave the bar. I thought that this was a bit unprofessional of the back of house staff. The food is gorgeous I couldn’t fault it, my sister got fajitas they looked amazing and I got the cheese and bacon chicken burger. The one thing I would say is that you could tell the chips were frozen chips and I think the burger would have tasted so much better with mozzarella rather than cheddar Cheese but that’s just my opinion. Overall though our experience was really good and I will definitely be returning :)

Wouldn’t mind that quality of food if I was paying a fiver but for £9 you expect more!!

We live locally and love coming to this pub in the summer to sit outside in the sun as the views are beautiful and it’s lovely to have a drink at. The food is very poor though. My husband ordered the veggie burger expecting a spicy bean burger or meat substitute burger like Quorn but what he was presented with was a roasted red pepper in a bun with cheese on. I think the menu should be clearer on that. I ordered a normal beef burger but it was so rare it was practically alive so I couldn’t eat it. If they serve it that rare they should really warn people so they can ask for it well done. The chips was ok and there were plenty of them and the onion rings were nice. Coleslaw was awful. All in all we were both very disappointed. When this was a Thai restaurant the food was amazing but since it’s changed hands (several times since then I think) the food has definitely gone down hill. We will only be having drinks in here from now on.

The Sunday lunch menu reads, "Ask your server for the vegetarian option" so I did. I was told by the snooty waitress that it was the standard lunch without meat but cost the same!!! My son and I had already bought drinks so we made the bad decision to try it. It was not good. Sloppy mash and turnip, Yorkshires and roasties were undercooked in the middle. Not a great choice or amount of other veggies.

We have been frequently to The Ship for food, Sunday lunch was ALWAYS outstanding. we haven't been for a few months - I can only assume it's under new management. I should have realised when we arrived - I've never seen it so quiet. My husband and I (who had a rare Sunday without our little one decided to "treat ourselves") We both ordered two courses. The potato skins arrived, which were lovely, then for the main event - lumpy runny mashed potato, frozen Yorkshire puddings, gelatinous gravy and meat (pork for him beef for me) looked suspiciously like those frozen boil in the bag things - I'm pleased it was so thin as any thicker I wouldn't be able to have chewed it, the vegetables were "ok", husband bearly touched his - I ate about half. Next was apple crumble - a plate of sugar, how can you get a crumble so wrong? That went straight back.

I’ve visited this pub 4 times. All 4 times, regardless of the time, they stop serving food at random hours. They’ve stopped serving food at 13:00, 15:00 and 17:30. And when I queried it with the barmaid she was extremely rude and just told me the chef stops serving food whenever he feels like it. The same barmaid had given me the food menu 2 minutes before she told me they no longer serve food. The manager was also supposed to come speak to me, but never did. Very disappointed because it’s such a nice location.

Came here last Thurs. Have been many times before but that night it wasn't up to its usual at all. I got the burger, asked for it well done, it came pink, onion rings were greasy, fries were nice. Sister got the same and wasn't impressed either. Dad's meal in his words was cold chicken wings in "piri piri" sauce, but tasted more like tomato sauce and tempura prawns in grease laden batter.

I like this pub. Nice beer, nice views, good music but the food is gash. I popped in after work for a pint and a snack. Ordered the piri piri “chicken wings”. I’ve put the chicken wings in inverted commas because they were nothing short of dried up husks of gristle that tasted of nothing nice. I complained (and believe me, it takes a lot) and I was promptly refunded after tearing into a wing with my fingers and revealing the dark, dry mess inside. I am in no doubt that these “wings” came out of a freezer bag from some low cost retailer. Sorry Ship, hopefully you will read this and take it as constructive criticism. You get so many things right apart from the food. Sort this problem out and you will be the jewel in the crown of Eighton Banks.

We had never been to the ship before so we decided to give it a try.I found after checking the menu you could only have a sunday roast with a choice of either beef, pork and chicken which was okay but other places we have visited you had the choice to pick from a alternative menu.As far as the meal was concerned we found it very disappointing we had starters of garlic mushrooms which was fine and our grandsons had a childrens size dinner and we asked for the gravy to come separate as the the kiddies prefer to put it on themselves, unfortunately the gravy was cold so after asking it to be warmed up it came back just barely warm.We were served with our dinners which were okay but we thought that all the meat on our plates were very thinly cut and some of the vegetables were pretty hard (green beans, broccoli,) they had also put the gravy on your dinners instead of in a gravy boat which ended up with my wife,s dinner having far to much on but to make matters worse the gravy was just warm rather than hot but saying that the roast potatoes were gorgeous and went down really well.I have to say we found the staff very pleasant and friendly and the pub itself was fine and served a good pint with wonderful views of the surrounding area but on this occasion a pity about our meals.

Went here for Sunday lunch, stood for a while for to be ignored by someone pretending to be busy on the till, gave our name over/ no record of our booking, when they brought the food it was swimming in gravy, the mash potatoes were stone cold, we even had to ask for our cutlery, and when we asked for salt we were told she didn’t think there was any ! Frozen Yorkshire puddings, we left our food and drinks and walked out, please avoid at all costs

Popped in for the first time today for tea. The pub has a good atmosphere and waiting staff are very nice, friendly and efficient, but I sat through the whole meal in my coat as the radiators weren't on in the dining room. I ordered the rump steak - medium, and the OH ordered the mixed grill. (The steak was marked Gluten Free, but upon enquiry the beer battered onion rings that it comes with are definitely not gluten free and I assume that's why they arrived in a separate bowl) The OH then had a very worried look on his face when the table next to us ordered the mixed grill to be told they had run out of it! (at 5.30pm start of service I was astonished) He had a good right to be worried when it arrived. He clearly got the tail end of what was left. The sausages had been reheated in a microwave, the lamb/beef (He was confused, could have been either) that wasn't fat would have been playing with the horses next door with the assistance of a good vet, and the gammon could have been found labelled extra thick cut bacon. Luckily he was starving and ate what he could whilst pulling faces at me. Mine was medium/well to well in places. It was edible but dry and thankfully there was plenty of Dianne sauce to go with it and the chips were nice. The menu prices are reasonable, but that won't excuse the steak. Sadly the table next to us were still waiting for their starters when we left, so I hope they didn't have to wait too much longer!

Went here today (14th) for my dad's birthday with him and my sister. We don't live far away so it's ideal. A little gem of a place. Been quite a few times and always happy with the place. Didn't need to book. I got the penne carbonara, beautiful, my dad got the mixed grill, he said everything was cooked perfectly, he didn't like the liver, but that's personal preference. My sister got the burger and fries and she said hers was lovely, she originally wanted the lamb which was on a separate menu on the table, but the waitress explained you could only have stuff from that menu if it was pre-booked. My dad got the cheesecake for pudding and we had mentioned it was his birthday and the lovely waitress put a candle in the cake, nice touch. All meals were lovely. With 2 lime and sodas, 3 pints of Coor's and 3 pints of John Smith's everything came to less than £60. Looking forward to our meal there.

Had lunch here on Saturday. Was horrendous. I had the scampi and chips and could not eat it. It tasted like it had re cooked. The chips were either hard and crispy or thick and rubbery. The scampi was extremely over cooked and so so dry. I really like this bar for a drink as the place is lovely and the staff are fantastic. Will not eat hear again.

Absolutely horrified that we discovered fireworks will be let off , even though it's location is in a hugely populated livestock and equestrian area. Their reaction has been for all the people with animals to.." deal with it"! Even though they are breaking the law going ahead with fireworks. Shocking!.most of their customers instead of drinking in their will have to be out till all hours settling their animals.

This pub is in a semi rural area around which a lot of horses, dogs and other animals are housed. They decided to set up a firework display yesterday, November 2nd which in the general opinion of most local animal owners was excessively loud and caused extreme distress to the animals in the local area. When some of the owners of the animals expressed their disappointment via social media this was the reply from the pubs manageress, verbatim;

Arrived at pub just after 12.30 for lunch, pub wasn’t busy about a dozen folk in total in the place, got our drinks and the waitress disappeared around the other side of the bar, we sat and sat no one appeared to take our order so as we had finished our drinks my husband paid and we left. I said to my husband did she not ask why we had not wanted to eat as she had given us menus ? No was his response. Due to what has happened to the Mill House around the corner we would have thought they would have been pleased with our custom, however in this case the waitress was more interested in talking than serving.

The past two times I have been to the ship the waiting time for food has been ridiculous - well over an hour for one course and it wasn't even that busy. Ordered a vegetarian burger with halloumi, pesto and peppers - when it eventually arrived it was a bun with a tiny bit of halloumi in, loads of peppers, no pesto and no veggie burger! Very misleading. Left still hungry as it was basically a pepper sandwich! Waited for what seemed like forever just to pay the bill. Three people complaining that their food hadn't arrived or wasn't as it should be as we left. Such a shame as it could be really good - lovely atmosphere, play area etc, but we won't be back. Engine rooms is so much quicker to serve and the food is much better.

A great, cheap and cheerful, good value breakfast, as a great break from some shopping in the Metro Centre. It is a big pub, so plenty of tables, including lots of booths which give a nice touch. Between us we had different breakfast muffins, including the bacon and egg, and the veggie sausage - both were great. The veggie sausages were really tasty and good quality - as good as the real thing! Using the app makes ordering really easy, and tea and coffee refills are free. So all in all, a great breakfast at a great price, in a nice setting.

Ate here for 4 days whilst on a coach trip. The establishment was clean and the staff were pleasant, but there were a few things that let it down. My main concern was that there were no sneeze guards over any of the food, particularly where the desserts were laid out and everybody had to pass/wait in order to get their main meal. Likewise, in the hot plate area there was no food protection whatsoever, and while this may not be a mandatory requirement, this is the only hotel in years that I haven't seen this in place to protect customers and staff alike, even before covid times. The breakfast is very good although we missed some mushrooms with our full English, and ironically the fresh bread is covered with a tea towel. The dinner portion sizes were a bit hit and miss, as one evening my partner got 1 small fishcake, 3 new potatoes and a bit of veg, not very substantial for an adult, yet my stuffed peppers and vegetables was a good size. We also thought that £37 for a bottle of Errazuriz Chardonnay was very extreme, and while we understand there has to be a mark up, we didn't pay this much in London!
