We arrival at The Shepherds Rest shown to our room by a member of staff, just matter of fact, no conversation, didn’t ask how we were or about our journey or offer to help with bags etc. Bedroom very tired, creaky floor boards and beds, not very clean floor, there was a previous customers used tissue down the side of the bed, the beds had no headboards. The bedding and towels were changed during our stay. Bathroom very tired, plug didn’t fit in the sink and we had problems turning the light on and off. The over bath shower worked well and was hot. The rooms were cold, we asked several times about getting the heating turned on but the radiators didn’t warm up for long, the thermostat is in the bar, why should we have to keep on asking. We did try the food on our first night, we were given dried up chips and lasagna, no flavour, never again it was the worst meal we had anywhere during our week in Northumbria We had breakfast on our first morning, this was ok. We felt as though we were intruders, an inconvenience, there was no interest show in us at all during our stay The Shepherds Rest is a local drinkers pub not welcoming B&B.

Just been here for tea, absolutely shocking, menu very limited, chose homemade lasagne only because it said home made, big mistake, it was clearly made by a novice cook, no tomato, no onions and no flavour, just full fat mince a layer of pasta and cheddar cheese melted on top, vile. Husband chose chicken breast with mash, he had option of blue cheese sauce and peppercorn sauce but not being a sauce fan chose nothing, when it came it looked very dry so asked politely if he could have some gravy, we were sat in an area outside the kitchen and the door was open wide all the time we were there, we heard the waitress ask for gravy and the cook was clearly not happy with this small request. We could see everything going off in the kitchen and I must say they microwave was in full use, worst meal I’ve had in my life to be honest.

Avoid at all costs. Very poor. Food poor quality and not cheap. heated up frozen lasagne with no sauce and therefore dry as dust. Fish with batter not fully cooked, peas cold. Only red wine available very tasteless. Don't really care when complaints are made.

Stayed here for a week while my partner was working in the area. Started off with a tent and then managed to get an upgrade via a friend to a caravan, anyhoo. Nothing is a problem to the staff at the Shep, electric cable hire, Toilet, waste disposal and more than sufficient shower, (bigger than most 3☆hotel bathrooms) food is homemade and delicious, the beer is top notch but most importantly, pub and campsite is dog friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend Jonny, Leah and the boys will be back.

Stayed here recently in a camper van and was absolutely horrified at the state of the toilet block. Disgusting, vile, insanitary - not fit for humans. The pub itself is ok, friendly staff, basic menu but fair. The state of the camping facilities are not acceptable - will never stay here again.

My partner and myself decided to pop down to Alnwick for the afternoon and get a Sunday lunch somewhere, after being knocked back everywhere we tried we decided to head back north , on passing the Shepherds rest I decided to pop in and see if we could get a table , not a problem and the first friendly and welcoming face we’d seen for the past hour . We were given a table in the bar and served with the most delicious Sunday roast ever , and very reasonably priced . Will certainly make this place our number one next time we’re down

We were hoping to stay here next week for 3 nights but unfortunately my wife had to be admitted to hospital on Tuesday when she had to have a serious operation . We got in touch with them to see if we could re book for a later date, and we were told that we hadn't cancelled within 7 days !!!! So we have to pay £144 even though we were 7days away and wanted to re book . What a heartless business you run , I hope you spend our money on something worthwhile and NOT yourselves , like donating it to it your local NHS hospital as the one my wife went into probably saved her life. We have r e booked to come to Alnwick but as sure as he'll we won't be setting foot is this place.

The food was very nice pub grub, our waitress was super friendly, only downside was despite all the signs and sanitisers it felt pretty much like business as usual here, the tables were pretty close and there were some people standing between the tables chatting, not much social distancing going on, didn't see any staff wearing face coverings. Would come back here, but not whilst covid 19 is still an issue.

We visited here for a meal during our recent trip to Alnmouth. On arrival we were stood in the doorway waiting to be seated for quite a while as the staff ran around doing other things. Once seated we got our drinks brought to us and ordered our meal. No problem. After a rather long wait our starters were brought and the staff member said she would return with our cutlery. 10 minutes later still no cutlery snd my husband went to find out what the hold up was. Apparently the staff thought someone else had done it. Our food was fine. No problem there. Then we waited around 45 minutes and still no main course. We asked what had happened and the staff member said she would find out. A different member of staff came out to apologize and told us that our meal had been given to someone else and eaten. She was very apologetic and gave us a free drink . Our meal arrived pretty soon after this. Again, the food was good. Overall it was the service that let this place down. The pub is very nice inside and has a lovely beer garden. It’s also dog friendly, which was one of the reasons we chose it. It’s a shame because I think the staff were run off their feet while we were there.

The Shepherds Rest is the kind of pub that was all over the place before Weatherspoons came along. The food we had was home cooked and was both tasty and good value. What really impressed us was the lady who was running the place single handed, she looked after a fairly full bar and also brought out our food and cleared away once we had finished. The other customers were very friendly and were happy to engage in a conversation.

Things started off so well yesterday. Friendly staff and the room was comfortable and clean. I would have liked to have given this accommodation a high rating but we paid for a breakfast we did not get. We were told it would be ready at 9.00am but when we came down via the external door, the pub was locked and by 9.30am no one turned up so we had to leave, and it made it a very expensive night’s accommodation. I could not recommend Shepherds Rest - very expensive for bed but no breakfast. Be warned.

We stopped here for Sunday lunch after seeing they advertised doing a Sunday carvery, we hadn't booked so thought we'd chance our luck & pop in. I asked the gentleman at the bar if he had a table with a high chair available, he seated us at a little table in the corner by the fire, then went off to get a high chair. He obviously got distracted along the way, so my partner went to retrieve the booster he had found for us after 5 minutes of waiting. The clips were broken, but we made do. The man behind the bar (I think he was called Andy) had said he'd bring some menus over at his first opportunity. After around 10 minutes he came across to take our order- we still hadn't had a menu, but already knew we wanted the carvery we'd seen advertised. He asked us which meat we would like, said it wouldn't be long and disappeared. After a short wait, a polite waitress brought us 2 Sunday Lunches (definitely not a carvery then) The food was nice & there was plenty of it, the veg was fresh & piping hot- but definitely not a carvery. The bill after 1 course & a drink each was around £25. It just seemed that they could have used an extra pair of hands, and we would have quite liked a look at the menu!Overall okay, but the service let it down a bit.

Well ! I have to say I was rather disappointed, I had read old reviews on line and also the new ones, and it seemed that it was all good, checked the times for meals on a Sunday, 12 pm till 5pm, so with the thought of having a Sunday off from cooking, we set off. It is from the outside a thousand times better, in side, the bar is still very dated, which is a shame, as the new owners had obviously started off with great intentions on a revamp, we were given the choice to sit were we wanted so we elected to sit in the Conservatory, we regretted this choice, as it was very cold and it was 3.45 pm and the light was fading and there was no lights turned on, only when a group of other folk came in was the lights turned on, we had asked on arrival in the Sunday Carvery was still available"Yes" was the reply, so we were left seated for twenty minutes before we could go and get our food! not sure why! any way this was were the disappointment really lay... the selection was very and I mean very limited! there was chicken, beef or Lamb! as there was very little left of the last two we had chicken myself my husband and of course our young son, when it came to veg choice it got worse we had some very hard, lightly sprinkled cauliflower cheese! next very soggy cabbage which I chose to skip! then out of season, for this time of year! New potatoes, and some very hard Yorkshire puddings then gravy which was not of great taste! So my son who did not want any of the veg but, loves Yorkshires and Mash ( there was no creamed potatoes ) was standing with a very empty plate, the staff were lovely at all times, and they did take some of the new potatoes and mash them down, but as some one that has cooked meals for a huge family for the past twenty five years I knew that was not going to work well, but they were so nice the staff, I did not want to say that to them! any way we sat down to eat, and I could not cut my chicken, as it had obviously been under the heat from the carvery so long it had become like rubber, as my husband was so hungry he tackled it and won, my young son on the other hand left everything, but did manage to eat some of the chicken and a little of the Yorkshire Pud and some of the potato, we were very hungry on leaving and Yes I ended up cooking something quick for them once home :( . so much for a day off! anyway, what I will say is this they need to give more choice of veg and make sure there is something for everyone! also don't roast new potatoes, this was also a let down, am sure the food at the begging of the service at 12 pm was on top form! but by 4 pm it was looking very sad, and if you advertise that food is on till 5 pm then it should still be looking good and tasty at 4pm! if you see what I mean. the only positive thing to say, is the staff were very nice and am sure there will be plenty of reasons for the slowness of us getting our food ( by the way the place was dead it was just us at that point) and am sure it is, too most tastes, but if like us, you think of a roast with veg, good puds and spuds, then I have to say this will not be up too scratch.. we wont go back due to the quality of the food on that Sunday... sorry guys!.....

We stopped in for dinner on a Sunday evening after a day of sight-seeing in Alnwick. We noticed the sign advertising Sunday Roast on our way into town earlier in the day. The building looked attractive from the street but it did not hold a lot of appeal once we stepped inside. The kitchen had closed by the time we arrived (around 18:00) but the proprietor checked with the cook and they were able to accommodate us and serve us a roast gammon dinner. The food was very good - roast gammon (ham, as we would call it in Canada), Yorkshire pudding with gravy, roast potatoes and steamed broccoli, cauliflower, red cabbage and bolied new potatoes. All was very tasty and the portion size was generous. The meal exceeded my expectations. I understand the property has new owners so I hope they are able to improve the appeal of the interior of the pub. The staff were friendly and went out of their way to accommodate us. Drove onto to our pitch and were horrified to realise we had driven over an old bonfire site. We picked up 5 handfuls of nails, screws, tacks etc. Luckily we didn't have a puncture! The toilet shed was just as despicable with loose tiles on the floor, loose tap and no signs of any cleaning done during our stay. Couldn't faces the shower shed! I and three colleagues visited the Shepheards rest last night. We had pre-booked a table, although this is not essential. The owner greeted us as we entered and after taking our drink order gave us a choice of sitting in the bar area or the conservatory for our meal. We chose the conservatory and were given our menu, offering a special which consisted of two courses for two people for £20. After queries about dishes on the menu the owner spoke to the chef, who took the time to come to our table and discuss the menu (adding a personal touch). Our food was cooked from scratch and was beautiful. At two people for £20 this was very good value for money. After our meal we moved to sit in the bar area, where some customers were having an acoustic music night. Although the music wasn't to our taste it was very pleasant background music and added to the atmosphere. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. The food was lovely and good value for money. Add this to the overall friendly, cosy welcoming atmosphere it is well worth a visit.

We certainly didn't have rock hard Yorkshires! Bob the owner is very friendly so to read overbearing from another review I find quite sad. I wouldn't hesitate to drive up from newcastle for the lovely food and hospitality and have and will keep recommending this to friends.

Sunday lunch....Transported back to the 80's!Service was fast. Maybe because it was very quiet. ..much to owners apparent surprise. Meat was tasty if a little overcooked.Lovely stuffingYorkshire puddings were awful. So hard I was in fear of my teeth!Veg average but poorly presented. Pudding (inc in price) choice of banana split, , cheesecake, gateau or fruit. All good sizes but lacked originality. 2 people 2 drinks and 2 courses.... £26.00... was ok but nothing special. Also do not accept cards...not made clear when we walked in so emergency cash point run required. Not the best but ok.

We visited the pub today for Sunday lunch. Meat tough,Yorkshire puddings that you could play cricket with, roast potatoes that I am sure we're cooked during the week and had been kept warm until Sunday, over boiled veg, and the ultimate, lumpy, slimed gravy. It was awful save your money,it did include a pudding but we could not find it in us to stay and partake.

please do not enter this campsite ,, !! it should carry a health warning !!!!!!! This has to be the worst campsite in the country and ive stayed on a lot ,, we only stayed as it was a last resort looking for somewhere ,, we were charged £20 per night with a minimum stay of 2 nights ,, the toilet was in a shed with dirty loose tiles and a stinking red towel that was wet when we got there on Saturday and was still in it when we left this morning ,, the shower was in another shed with no sink ,, you had to clean your teeth in the sink in the toilet shed ,, there are no dish washing facilities ,, this man who went by the name of bob should be disgusted with himself running such a shambles,, we had to pay him upfront and he only excepts cash with no receipt given ,, straight in the hip pocket ,,, no tax being paid by old bobby boy ,,, I will be contacting the caravan club to see why the hell they let him run it as one of there sites ,,, as for the restaurant there was no way in hell I would have ate or drank in it ,, simon d has described it to a T !!! I can only think ronniesgirl1982 and carl F are related to bob or else his best mates ,,, please people do not go to this site under any circumstance ,, sleep in the car first !

Myself and my Husband visit this place regularly for a their sunday carvery and we've never been disappointed. The owner Bob is very down to earth but don't expect any airs and graces as he is just a top bloke. He offeres a great range of home cooked meats and veg and desserts and for less than a tenner what more can you want? There are also some lovely areas to walk off your huge sunday lunch with some great views.

Me and my wife ate at this "seemingly" lovely country pub at the edge of one of Britains loveliest towns. Upon arrival however, our illusion was shattered, as when we entered, there was a very distinctive smell to the place that can only be familiarised as urine. Usually, this would have provoked me to leave immediately, but being cold and hungry, we decided to stay. Unfortunately our problems were only just beginning, in a nightmare that involved lukewarm, tough food, and an extremely rude and overbearing landlord. needless to say, we will not be visiting again.

We stopped by chance at The Percy Arms for a drink and ended up eating an amazing meal-Wednesday afternoon and very quiet but the food was delicious and the service excellent. The soup was very tasty and the steak cooked to perfection - we will return!

I’m so sad to see this lovely place closed. It had great staff and atmosphere and a fantastically good smoked haddock chowder. I wish its people all the best and I thank them for all the great visits we’ve had here. I really hope that there might be a replacement cafe of such quality. We’ll watch with interest.

Our introduction to this country pub was to a spacious, comfortable, immaculately clean bedroom, with stunning views of the fells. Next dinner and cooking of Michelin quality. A highlight was the scallop with belly pork, a brilliant dish. Next morning breakfast, again flawless in every respect from the service to the produce. Any prospective dining pub owner/chef should come here to see how it's done.

Generous portions of tasty pub food and some excellent local cask beer. The warmest of welcomes for me and Razzie the border terrier and a special shout out to Adele for looking after me so well!
