Excellent food and service, my only comment is that it's difficult to find a quiet corner, it's very busy and therefore the noise volume can be difficult to deal with

Food always very tasty here. Good menu with lots of choice and large portions. Our car broke down in the car park and the staff couldn’t do enough to try and help us. Thank you!

The food is really good here. We arrived just before the kitchen closed after a long journey and were fitted in and looked after really well. We came back for the second night of our stay and the food didn't disappoint. Good quality and value. Everything we picked was delicious. We booked the second night. It was very busy on the first night which was a random winter's Tuesday evening. We took it as a good sign that it was popular. We weren't let down.

Visited with friends again excellent service and food staff were friendly and helpful nothing to much trouble,Food came within a few minutes after ordering. Only problem a table full of loud noisy people and a baby,noticed two ladies left a table near us due to noise. Apart from that excellent food,will visit again.

Parking is generally an issue and the parking area is tight but once parked the restaurant area and service is well managed. Generally busy so booking recommended essential at weekends. Friendly staff and good varied food with daily specials. Great roasts on Sunday. Would recommend for family or friends eating.

We've been here a few times in the past, but it's not as good as now. It was a cooler day, windows closed, but so many flies around us indoors, landing on our food all the time, horrible. Don't normally get that problem inside. The steak apparently had a lot of gristle. The vegetarian pie was very dry and unappetising. The whole meal wasn't great, no one was enthusing about their food. No one asked if everything was ok. Not cheap these days, won't be back

We experienced a very pleasant time at lunch here today . Good welcome , friendly service and plenty to choose from …good pub menu . We all had different main courses which were generous, tasty and nicely presented . We stayed for a long time to chat and there was no feeling of time to leave !

Lovely pub no far from Stowmarket, one of the quaintest i have ever been. We had a table booked, as its a busy place. Food is simple pub fare but really tasty, portions are quite big. All the staff was really friendly.

Had a great meal, 2 gluten free and one not. They had a great menu both for gluten free and non. A fair price for a good meal and we were so pleased to be given some many gluten free options. Also good and friendly service.

First impression was odd as the phone was answered but he had to get the diary. I held for 5 mins but he didn't return. I called again and booked table!! On arrival we had a table and were served drinks, ordered food which was absolutely gorgeous from 1st to 3rd course. Then, out of the blue, my husbands dessert came out from kitchen with a candle and the whole pub singing happy birthday. This was the perfect end to this lovely evening. If I could give 10 stars I would, atmosphere lovely, staff lovely, food amazing what more can I say

The cheesy garlic bread was delicious, as was the house red wine. However, the Barnsley lamb chop was supposed to have been served with a ‘mint jus’ instead it was served with a thick gloopy gravy. Not good.

We were served by friendly helpful staff. Our party all cose different main courses. The meals were served piping hot and the portions were generous. I felt that my food could have had a little less salt, but the others in our party all enjoyed their meals.

Four of us have just returned from a 3 course meal here this evening. I felt I had to write a review as the whole evening was great. The staff are attentive, friendly and welcoming, nothings too much trouble. The food was very very tasty, all 3 courses were bought out in good time and everything was faultless. We went to the Shepherd and Dog recently with friends and we’re highly impressed, the food was amazing and the staff extremely jolly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble, I would highly recommend booking beforehand and we will definitely be going back.

I had been to this place once before and had a great meal. This time it was for a 91st Birthday meal for a Profoundly Deaf Aunt..Staff could not have been more helpful (especially Maddy XX.) Food great again , will defo visit again..again..again John

My wife and I made our first visit to The Shepherd and Dog when we were looking for a light lunch on a Sunday whilst travelling in Suffolk. I checked the menu on their website and was pleased that light snacks were available. The pub has a good car park, a garden with kids play equipment plus a large decking area at the front with benches and parasols & a dedicated smoking area with a couple of benches to one side. We were given warm welcomes by a number of the staff. I ordered a couple of drinks plus two baguettes - one with prawns; the other with chicken, bacon and mayonnaise. At the time of ordering, I was given 2 paper bag packet each with a "Thank You, The Shepherd & Dog" label plus a basket of condiments. When I got back to our table I found that the bag contained cutlery, a napkin plus a fresh wipe for each person. Very impressive. The baguettes arrived within 10 minutes; were about 10 inches long cut in two and were well filled. They were accompanied by a small handful of potato crisps, a small bowl of coleslaw and some salad garnish. All very nicely presented. All of the food was excellent!A number of the other customers ordered Sunday roasts. They looked sizeable portions and from a couple of comments we overheard, they were of excellent quality too.Before leaving, i needed to use the Gents toilets. The facilities were very clean and tidy and a really good touch was the provision of a changing table.The pub was busy, clearly very popular and we could see why.

Hd a fantastic meal on Friday evening, staff where excellent and attentive, i would advise anyone who uses this establishment too pre book, especially at weekends.

Enjoyed another delicious lunch yesterday at this friendly pub. We went on the off chance and sat outside, albeit a little chilly, but the excellent service and food was well worth it. Always generous portions and nicely presented . Definitely the best local pub restaurant - luckily we live close by!

Had a lovely meal to celebrate our Nursery End of Term. The staff were lovely, with all covid restrictions and rules in place, felt very safe. We all had different meals and they were all really delicious, portions were very generous and all homemade. We all left very stuffed....thank you everyone.

Had wanted to try this place so we popped in for a light lunch midweek & wow !!! The menu was so enticing we opted for the fish & chips as it all looked so good & we wasn’t disappointed. The ladies covering our table couldn’t do enough to ensure we had all we needed & I got to admit their friendly nature actually encouraged us to spend more than we would of normally for a quick lunch !! So well done to everyone at the pub & we shall be back !!

A warm welcome to the pub, great service. Clean surroundings and safety first amid Covid. We had starters, mains and desserts because we are greedy! All were beautiful, good portion size and bill was reasonable too.

We have lived a stones throw from this pub for the past 4 years but have rarely visited due to the previous experiences when visiting of us and kids being This visit we hit the jackpot. The staff where great above and beyond the normal front of house and waitress experience. I think the landlady and a colleague where on a night off and sitting amongst us but still made the kids feel welcome. We only had access to the front garden which is well thought out. The staff brought us a giant chalk board and even drew and played hopscotch on the floor. We ordered a ham egg and chips (amazing ham off the bone and thick cut) Buttermilk chicken burger with sweet potato friesAnd a kids cod goujons and chips (came with a drink and ice cream) The whole Covid situation was managed well and we felt super safe. Locals where lovely and the staff and food perfect just what you want from pub grub and it’s frequenters. The back garden will be open soon and is enclosed and has plenty of kids fun like a sunken trampoline a kids swingball set and some other natural play ideas. This pub is very picturesque and inviting, so has curb appeal. It has an outside space at the front which was popular as it was lovely day, parking and a children's play area (closed due to COVID for now) We were seated in side which does have very pleasant surroundings. However, this is the 2nd time I have visited this pub in the past year and disappointedly the service remains very slow and inside it is very noisy, although in fairness it hard to understand why it is so noisy as nobody was talking loudly etc. but noisy it was. The wait to order and for the food to come was long even if some things may be cooked from scratch ..Food wise, a bit of a mixed bag. Starters were enjoyed by all, ( Pate, Mussels, Chicken coujons, stilton mushrooms, Brie wedges) mains enjoyed by some, (Veg Lasagne, Burger, Hunters chicken, Mushroom Risotto, Baked Potato and Duck) but unfortunately the mixed grill and the gammon were not on top form, for the money the mixed grill was very poor, however a new plate was offered but declined and discount made to the bill. Staff were apologetic and overall very friendly.Because this is the 2nd visit where I feel the speed of service has not improved and some of the food was below par I can sadly only give 3 stars.

We came upon this pub by chance and saw there were tables outside so decided to have lunch there. Covid distancing etc was observed and the staff were friendly. I had scampi, chips and peas - the portion was large and they were cooked beautifully. It was a very enjoyable meal. We were told there were only two waitresses there that day and considering this they did quite well.

We booked for Sunday lunch on the bank holiday weekend. Pub was very busy but the staff were excellent. They seem like a very well-organised team. Beers served at table and the food was very good. Very large portion of beef and chicken with nice roasties and gravy. It’s not local for us but for anyone passing I’d recommend.

Maybe slightly higher priced than some pubs but it's FRESH!!!I take my Sister here once a week when I am in the UK and the food is excellent, nice rural setting and the staff are always spot on. Friendly , polite and my Sister (who is disabled) loves coming here. I do as well (especially when my Sister says it's her turn to pay !)Try it, I can't see how anyone will be disappointedthank you - especially in these crazy times

We have used the restaurant on many occasions but were disappointed on our last visit owing to the restrictions now in place. The service was very sow and the crowd in the bar war certainly now adhering to the distancing rules. We will not be returning until I hear that these matters have been sorted out

Three of us ate here today for the first time since lockdown. Fully COVID compliant - we felt very safe. Good variety of choice and well presented. The belly pork dish - a special - was particularly good. Not a wow factor so not five but overall very good

My wife and I usually avoid ‘chain’ pubs, this one being Greene King. We get in the car and just drive out somewhere. We stumbled across this pub by accident. I’m very glad we did. The pub is lovely, the staff were genuinely welcoming and attentive and the food was amazing - just make sure you are hungry!!!!!All COVID 19 measures are in place but you didn’t feel like they were intrusive. Big car park. Very rural surroundings. Thank you ladies for a lovely lunch. We will be back.

We ate here twice during a recent visit to Suffolk. The first time was for Sunday lunch which we booked in advance. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and fussed over our little dog. All Covid-19 safety measures were in place and we felt very secure eating there. It was the most ‘normal’ I had felt in months. The food was hot, plentiful and delicious. My husband said that next to his mum’s, it was the best Sunday roast he’d ever had - high praise indeed!The second meal was on the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme. Luckily, they managed to squeeze us in without a booking. The meal was great.This pub is highly recommended, and we are even planning a special trip back for a Christmas meal!

We arrived at our allotted time to be asked to complete the bookers name and tel number then shown to our table. Menus read and food ordered, didn’t wait long at all and was lush I had a Thai chicken curry, even decided on a pudding Eaton mess was to die for. Was so nice and easy despite restrictions and have booked again for this week .

Lunchtime Saturday 8 August first visit post shielding. We booked a table inside knowing that the temperature was high. Received by lovely staff and explanation of the new COVID-19 safe elements. Our meal was delicious with a nice bottle of wine at a good price. Desert was great and coffee. We are now looking forward to our next visit.

Well done to the team at the Shepherd & Dog last night. Firstly a beautiful night to be sitting outside & enjoying a meal with friends and the Staff have gone out of their way to make sure everything is safe but still a lovely atmosphere. Staff were friendly, cheerful & helpful - especially Ellie who was our waitress for the evening. Our first pub meal out since lockdown & didn’t disappoint so will be returning.

We visited on Friday 31 July 2020 with 6 of us in the party, 4 adults and 2 children. I was very impressed by the very practicable measures that the pub have taken to manage the Covid-19 outbreak. We sat on the terrace where the tables had been suitably spaced. They have a good system in place when you want to order. You place a wooden spoon in a holder and lo and behold, the server comes to take your order. There were plenty of staff on duty. Cutlery comes in a sealed paper bag complete with napkin and hand wipe. We observed staff thoroughly cleaning the tables when they became vacated.Apart from the organisation, the food was good as always. My Steak and Ale pie had, unlike many other such offerings, chunks of real meat inside. The kids were well catered for from a menu which included an ice cream WITH chocolate buttons (VERY important).Well done Shepherd and Dog. I hope your trade stays as good as it was when we visited.

The management had worked really hard to mark out one way systems, to make outside tables reservable and small touches to keep everyone safe. Recommended if you are cautious about Covid

Went in for a Sunday roast dinner and drinks. This was for 2 adults and a child . Ordered drinks then waitress took food order , she said I need to write your order down as I can't remember 3 orders ??? I thought here we go.. So she went to get a pen as she didn't have one ( she needs training) We drunk our drinks, was left for 30 mins so we asked if we could have another drink . Drinks didn't show up , after 1 hour we asked if the food is coming , the same waitress that took our order said , have you ordered ???? What have you ordered???? She went off came back and said sorry the order didn't go through. She said I can put the order through now , I said how long will that take ? She didn't know . I said leave it and left. Won't be back to that pub , I guess you expect that sort of service from a Greene king pub. The young girl just didn't have a clue and needs a lot of training in customer service. Sorry but can't even blaime it on the whole covid thing . It's just down to common sense.

Easy to find with lots of free parking. Very busy even at 17:30 Saturday evening. Unfortunately this pub suffered from a bug bear of mine - uncontrolled children running around and screaming . Rant overFood is excellent and thankfully menu not too big. Freshly cooked too.

Visited here in February 2020 for a lunch. Only two of us. Ordered a medium sirloin steak, was so overdone. My ploughmans contained a lot of dried bread, ice cube butter, a couple of lumps of cheese. Barmaid didn't even acknowledge us when we said goodbye as we left. Will not be returning.

We popped in for a quick meal on our way home on a Tuesday Evening. We hadn’t booked and despite being busy staff were extremely accommodating. The Food was delicious and very generous portions. Classic Pub Food! Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Will definitely be visiting again soon.

This lovely place never disappoints. The food is simple, fresh, generous and always well done. The staff are friendly, professional and attentive. Great place for a meal but make sure you book because tables fill up fast.

I love giving a good review after good service, but a shame our visit in a group for the Christmas Menu was awful. Two of us had the Pork Tendrloin which we found to be cold, very, very bright pink inside and so tough, therefore we were unable to eat it. The others in the group thought the food was nowhere as good as previous visits. I told the lady about it and said it was far too pink and I felt pork should be cooked through, also as it was tough. She apologised and said she would sort it out. Then came back telling us the Chef said it was checked when cooking to be the correct temperature.. I feel if is to be so undercooked it should say so on the menu and we certainly would not have ordered it.. I would only eat Pork if cooked well so that it was tender as its name implies. When we went to pay, nothing was said about any reductions for inedible main course, so i again mentioned it and after an embarassing conversation was told they would deduct £5 for the two of us.. As the 3 courses cost £25. I would have expected at least half price. Surely they would put the value of the main course at more than £5. Hence we will not be visiting again. Awful Customer Service.

The place itself is lovely, very clean and fresh, taste fully decorated. However the food was an extreme let down on this occasion. The beef from the roast dinner tasted like it had been soaked in washing up liquid for a month and you couldn’t even cut through it despite it being pink in places, unbelievably chewy and fatty, and cut so thick some parts were 1/2 inches thick. The burger was burnt and cooked to an inch of its life so was extremely dry, as were the chips that accompanied it. The gravy was tasty however and the pork was enjoyable, but because 6 of the 8 at the table had beef, it severely dampened the experience. Service is on the whole very accommodating with lovely staff, however one member of staff is very poor at taking criticism and comes across very sarcastic, and rude. Won’t be returning.

Visited yesterday with 7 others.waited one hour for my meal and I had to ask for it. I am diabetic and it was 3oclock before I had food.the meal was ok but the people whom had beef couldn’t eat it as was unedible. Also being disabled there was nothing to help me. Access to the toilet was very hard having to access a foot high step. Also the car park and outside the pub was in a dreadful state .All in all I will not visit this establishment again. A very waste of £145 .

We were looking for a pub that served food midweek, all day and found this place on the internet. The pub is located in the countryside close to Stowmarket and is a real gem. The staff managed to find us a table (6 people) - I would suggest to make a booking to be safe as there not a huge amount of tables available. The main dining area is separate from the bar. The service from the staff was excellent. The menu has plenty of choice all at reasonable prices. There are daily specials offered too. A good choice of Greene King beer was available. Everyone in our family enjoyed their food - Thai green curry, steak and ale pie, Veggie dish and hunters chicken. The kids thoroughly enjoyed their meal, which came with dessert and a drink. This place is highly recommended.

A warm welcome from the staff in this lovely old pub. We ate in the bar area which I think would be quieter than the dining room. A good selection on the menu with several nice vegetarian options. Food is cooked to order so can be quite slow to arrive, but we were warned of this and the meals came out piping hot with lovely crisp pastry. The vegetables were a bit unimaginative and the salad lacked a dressing. Overall a good experience and well worth a visit.

What an absolute gem of a restaurant! It has an ambience that would make them a fortune if it could be bottled.

We called in to the pub on the off-chance of getting a table for lunch. Although it was just after mid-day, the tables were filling up with bookings and walk-ins, but no problem as we were given a table. The popularity signals good things to me.

This was our first visit,we took my partners dad who has advanced dementia for a roast for his birthday. The staff were amazing,couldnt do enough for us and the food was just as amazing. We will definitely be returning

We made the mistake of arriving without booking so took two trips to get a table. A good meal at a fair price. We would have returned if we had been in the area longer.

Not only was the food exceptional but the staff took care of our 10 week old twins so we could eat peacefully. Exceptional service and would advise anyone in the area to stop off. Thank you again for an amazing lunch and making us feel so welcome.

This is my third visit to this pub. As usual the food was good and nothing was too much trouble. The setting is beautiful, the food delicious and the staff outstanding.

Visited at lunchtime with two friends, very pleasant surroundings and quick service. Menu is varied and food was nice and also reasonably priced. Staff friendly and helpful, I noticed there is nice outside area too. Will be returning.

We are here at the weekend and ordered the Jalfrezi curry which was lovely. My daughter ordered a burger which was also very nice. Nice food with good service so we have discovered a little gem around the corner from my mum and dads so will be visiting again!

Enjoyed a gamon steak with chips as well as a pint of beer sitting ourside in the glorious sunshine. A busy place to eat and yes we had to wait a little but that's fine. Made to feel welcome and enjoyed the whole atmosphere as we ran into a number of friends who were also out for lunch.

We popped in for lunch this afternoon as a family of 4 with a dog. We were served a delicious Sunday lunch with homemade Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. Would recommend to anyone around. The staff were also lovely and the service very punctual.

Called in mid-week without a reservation, to find they were almost fully-booked, but the friendly helpful staff moved the tables around and fitted us in. After ordering from the reasonably-varied (and priced) menu, sure enough, the pub began to fill up. Inevitably, it became noisier because the infuriating modern trend of not having soft furnishings (especially curtains) meant that every noise becomes amplified, making conversation increasingly difficult.

We have regularly used this friendly restaurant which has nice staff and a welcoming atmosphere. However on our visit this week the usually amazing mixed grill was frankly poor, chips not crispy, not presented with any care, over cooked dry meet, and the lamb chop was see through as thin as a piece if bacon...... of course you expect small pieces in a Mixed Grill but it has definitely gone down hill.

What more can I say!! We went here with mother and father in law a few years ago and have been coming with them here ever since. Last visit was beginning of May. Local to the in laws and their favourite place to come. I normally have either the lasagna, Scampi or stroganoff and my other half loves the mixed grill. Good pub food!!

Busy as expected but nice table arranged as requested. Parking can be an issue at busy times and the road is adjacent a junction. This pub is well organised our order was taken and the food served in a reasonable time.

When we arrived we were met buy a member of staff shown to our table in the public bar because two of my friends were unable to walk to far,The menu was very interesting with so many dishes to choose from,having ordered our meal it was soon served piping hot very well presented and deIicious with four clean plates on to deserts which were equally as good.A great atmosphere we will be returning again soon.

Popped in for lunch on a Monday and the car park was packed out and only 1 table remaining. Hospitality and Service was excellent and food wonderful and tasty. The Red Thai Curry was the best I have had for a long time and my husband was raving about the Pheasant pie. Very generous portions too. We will definitely go back if in the area. Highly recommended
