Swan Inn in Mid Suffolk

We were staying nearby and we went here to eat and it was fantastic. The service was excellent and the food was even better, I personally had a steak and would go as far to say it was one of the best steaks I have eaten, I would most definitely recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday Carvery, all agreed it was the best roast we had had in years! Being GLUTEN FREE ,it is very hard to find a nice meal out but having pre booked, Matt went WAY above and beyond - yorkshire puddings, proper gravy, GF sausages, cauliflower cheese ! So for the first time ever I didnt miss out on a single thing the others were able to enjoy! AN ABSOLUTE TREAT!!! MASSIVE THANK YOU TO MATT and The Swan! CANT wait to come again and will be recommending it to everyone!!!

Popped in for a Sunday lunch, had an absolutely delicious roast beef carvery. Melt in the mouth. Great service, lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend going there.

I visited this pub with a friend last Saturday. We arrived late, about ten past ten. The publican was jovial, offering a bit of banter with our drinks order. When I went up to the bar at 10.40 for a further round, I was met by the landlady. She said she couldn't serve me, offered the word 'time' and said the bar was closed. I understood the practice of calling 'time' at 10.30 on a Saturday hadn't been a thing since the 90s, notwithstanding the brief period of madness we had during Covid. But I also recall that the calling of 'time' had to be preceded by ' last orders' ad option she most certainly didn't offer. I got the distinct impression we were being turfed out just because she could. It would seem an odd business model to follow, but one this pub adopted. I therefore cannot recommend the place.

Lovely inn located in a lovely town. Terrific food, service and lodgings. A perfect base to explore the countryside.

Met a friend for beer and food. The food was exceptionally good ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, my friend ordered a special from the board and I ordered the burger. It was quiet on the night I visited but the choice of playlist made up for it. The drafts were good so we ended up having a few pints after dinner too. Service was friendly. Recommended 👍

Amazing Food! We have been to the Swan many times and it never fails. The menu has a little of everything and the specials are always worth a look. On this occasion my husband had Crispy Chilli Beef with Noodles and I had a special of Shawarma (probably not spelt right) Chicken on a flat bread, neither meal disappointed they both looked, smelt and tasted great. Desserts, not that we had much room for them but we love the homemade Sticky Toffee Pudding and also the Lemon Roulade. Tried once and you will definitely go back Matt and Sam are always lovely.

We feel really blessed to have The Swan as our local pub. You couldn’t meet more welcoming hosts than Mat & Sam and the environment is wonderfully friendly. We have started to work our way through the menu and the Sunday carvery is excellent. My picture has captured the Crispy Shredded Chilli Beef as well as the Thai Peanut Chicken Satay with Rice & Thai Spiced Crackers. Incredibly tasty dishes and we would highly recommend. Been a customer sporadically and feel like a nuisance. Good food 😋 but as a lone female felt like a nuisance

Best customer service we've ever had whilst eating out. The staff were so welcoming to us and our two young children 2 and 4. The owner even helped my children walk back with their plates of food and sat them down at the table whilst we selected ours. So family friendly and caring. We will definitely be returning. Highly recommend!

Went with a large group and have to say they managed the numbers very well. Nicely cooked meat, plenty to go round, beer good too. What's not to like! Well, I did go back again a week or two later and have to say I found the landlady a bit "off" - I felt like I was a bit of an inconvenience - pitching up asking to be served beer..... How very dare I!

Great Sunday lunch,enjoyed with friends,travelled from Ipswich and Norwich to this venue. Roast pork and beef a delight and very well cooked, vegetables a delight apart from the roasties which were very hard to cut, but tasted nice. Deserts great , sticky toffee and chocolate. Ones all home cooked and delightful. We will return as we all enjoyed the staff, atmosphere and of course the excellent food

My partner and I had Roast Beef Sunday today. It was excellent lovely choice of meats .Lots of lovely fresh vegetables. And nice and hot. Very important hate just warm food. Definitely will be going back. Thankyou excellent

Excellent Sunday lunch - best I've had for a long time - I asked for rare beef and what time to arrive, and that's what I got :-) - only problem was I got tempted by the excellent Suffolk Pork, so had a slice of each. Potatoes were perfect, however, not the pubs fault, but the crown on my tooth came off the previous week, and so had the temp crown, so I had to be careful and did not enjoy them as much as I could of, so i'll have to come back for more. Cauliflower cheese was scrumptious, with really strong quality cheddar cheese. and home made gravy was divine. I don't know what the review saying that the pub looked run down - it's a proper country pub, not one in gentrified London. My only ask is a good local ale, how about some Ampersand, then you'll be 10 stars in my book. Lets not forget the excellent servers you have - much better than most other places.

Fantastic home cooked Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. Roast beef, pork and turkey, with super crispy roasties, Yorkshire puddings and a selection of vegetables served carvery style. Dairy free cauliflower cheese made to accommodate allergies. Friendly staff and reasonable prices for good quality food

Although from the outside the pub does look a little run down, do not be fooled. At the end of the day you visit for the atmosphere and food. The carvery on Sunday was great, Rump Beef, Pork and Turkey to choose from plus a selection of vegetables. Sticky Toffee pudding was delicious. Staff friendly and efficient. Only negative - a very small car park.

The food is always outstanding here. Really welcoming. Mat & Sam are amazing. Great atmosphere. Has dome great beer choices and Mats burgers and fish and chips and a must have.

Do not be fooled by the slightly down-at-heel exterior. This is an excellent pub truly exceptional food. My Mexican burger was the best I have ever tasted. Not just a regular burger with a bit of token chilli on top - quality beef spiced to perfection and cooked perfectly: seared outside, fabulously juicy and flavourful. My wife’s chicken burger was similarly excellent. And both were served one real bread buns - not the usual cotton wool brioches. To cap it all, local ales plus friendly and efficient service. Totally recommended 👌.

Our family all came for this wonderful carvery recently. Three choices of meat and very plentiful. The staff were very conscious of covid rules which we all appreciated. The sticky toffee puddings were top class.

My wife; that is the best burger I have had in years! Sums up the food here - amazing and what a menu choice!!!! Then there's the service and front of house team who just add that finishing touch to make this place special. Go. Eat. Enjoy. Thank you for a special night we weren't expecting.

We were looking for a pub for Sunday lunch. We booked and we had a memorable experience. Mat, chef proprietor prepared a sumptuous feast for us. We were glad we choose this place. Will definitely come back again if we are in this area.

We came for a Sunday carvery after reading the reviews and can honestly say it was amazing, really well organised and all 4 adults were more than happy. I was very hungover and couldn't finish my dinner so they put it in a to go container for me to take home, we also got pudding to go which was amazing. It was so nice to have a proper home cooked Sunday lunch and a really warm welcome, the staff couldn't do enough for you all very friendly and accommodating

We visited here as 4 of us are visiting the area on holiday. We all had the roast beef carvery. It was absolutely delicious. Generous portions and all homemade. We had a lovely warm welcome at the bar and Matt the landlord was friendly and attentive. We wish we we're a local!. Thank you and see you again.

Whilst staying in Fressingfield on holiday my wife and I thought we'd give the Swan a try. Unfortunately due to COVID regulations the pub was closed but they were offering a takeaway service. The food was superb, freshly cooked and generous portions. The schezwan dishes were far better than we've had from Chinese restaurants or takeaways.

This has been our favourite eating place for years because the food is just SO good! Matt & his wife Sam have worked so hard to make this a Covid safe environment and now all they can do is offer a Takeaway Menu. I picked up a takeaway yesterday, which was absolutely fantastic! Thai Peanut Satay Chicken with rice...... large portion in a box, and it was SO good ! My husband had scampi and chips with garden peas, the scampi were large and juicy and there was so much he had a job to get through it. Well done Matt & Sam and thank you for keeping the local community fed !

What a fabulous evening we spent here. Sam and her husband(the landlord and landlady) have so much to offer. Fabulous food, great service and ambience. Please support them during these trying times. We are two "on holiday" visitors from Bedfordshire. Highly recommended.

Really good food, well kept beer

Great takeaway service. Well thought out social distancing. Food was the same great taste. Apparently the salmon and prawn mornay was delicious, my burger was very nice and my daughters cod and chips was completely eaten (which says more than words every can)

In these difficult times that we are now in we wanted to support our local pub. We have just picked up take away from the Swan and wanted to highly recommend their prompt service. We had two dishes from the oriental selection - crispy chilli shredded beef on noodles and szechaun tiger prawns on noodles - both absolutely delicious. Well done *****

Staff are unfriendly and they close at 3pm, but on a positive they accept dogs.

Went for carvery Sunday 1st March 2020 lovely location and warm welcome from the landlord as I went in there was a lovely open fire and I went into the restaurant and sat down at precisely 12pm I waited 20mins and thought this is strange and thort someone will be over to say are you ready for your carvery. Then my food was brought out I was surprised as online it states carvery which to me you go up and get your food I was disappointed as was not enough food on my plate I can't fault the food as I did enjoy it just disappointed with the miss selling of on line advertising carvery when u don't get to go up and get your food.i wont be returning as was expensive for what was on my plate bill came to £14 so frustrated as still hungry. Be better off going to Morrison for a roast cheaper and bigger portions for £6.95.

Excellent food and pub, a must place to visit.

It was my first visit to this pub although my friends have been many times and rave about the food. There were five of us, four enthusiastic meat eaters and me, a strict vegetarian. Let me be clear, if you like meat and particularly steak, this is a good place to eat. If you are a vegetarian the menu is very limited with no healthy eating options and if you are a vegan you will really struggle. I wouldn’t even recommend contacting the chef in advance of visiting the pub because I don’t think there is an understanding of what nutritionally balanced, flavourful non animal cooking is. The dish I chose was Singapore Vegetable Chow Mein Noodles (V). It was served in one bowl with prawn crackers on top. When I commented on this the member of staff said “you didn’t say you were vegetarian”. The meal consisted of mainly egg noodles with some onion, peppers, mushrooms, courgettes and a tiny amount of bean sprouts. The flavouring was very insignificant. This meal cost £11.95. The cost of the ingredients would be under £2 and the chef’s time and attention to produce it, minimal. My friends all had meat or fish dishes and enjoyed them. They would probably give 4 or even 5 stars. The dessert menu has some choice but all seem to be commercially bought-in frozen items. I expect the owner/manager will read this and not be very happy that I have only awarded 2*. However my vegetarian money is as good as the steak eaters money and if you are going to make no effort to serve my dietary preferences it is better that vegetarian and vegans are for warned and stay away so you can continue to be a 4/5* meat eaters delight and not rip off any more vegetarians.

I live locally but visit other pub/restaurants on a regular basis.The Swan is always the best for us.The food is lovely, great choice and always nicely cooked.Everything freshly prepared and Sunday carvery one of the best.Cannot fault it.Nice to have a lovely pub almost on my doorstep.Thanks Sam Matt and staff.

My husband and I popped in for a last minute dinner . He ordered a 16oz steak with chips and salad and I ordered the 8oz steak with chips. Both steaks were juicy and full of flavour. Which makes a real change as I like my steak well done which usually means I end up with a piece of old boot leather! The chips were crispy and fluffy. I also had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Well what can i say! Gorgeous! Honestly, the best sticky toffee pudding I have EVER had. I travel a lot with work so had 10 years of tough old steaks and puddings that don't live up to expectations! Not here, food was absolutely lovely . In fact we are taking our kids and grandchildren back tomorrow night for a meal as we enjoyed it so much. well done chef! Oh and a lovely old fashioned pub inside, great selection of drinks, parking available . Well worth a visit.

Had the most fantastic Xmas dinner yesterday. The food was cooked to perfection as always. Lovely atmosphere, very friendly hard working staff. The chef did a fantastic job as did the girls serving. First time I have had Xmas dinner out and would definitely do it again here. Well done all of you.x

We visited the swan last night for a pre Christmas meal , 10 of us went and we were all very impressed the selection of drinks is superb and the food was excellent - all 3 courses were fresh , home cooked and well presented. Great selection of dishes something for all tastes would highly recommend and will definitely be visiting again

Delicious food and a nice local bitter

We stayed in Fressingfield for a week and ate at The Swan twice during our stay. Both times the food was freshly cooked and my wife and I enjoyed what we had. Local beers were available and the pub is dog friendly. We were made welcome by the staff and locals, so felt comfortable while there.

Decent beer. We sat at an empty table that was booked for two hours later, but still got turned down for food, so you really do need to book

This is a traditional pub with character and welcoming hosts. They serve very good food and beer. Had superb ham and eggs, the Sunday carvery and a lovely homemade burger. The Swan is also dog friendly.

Called in on a Friday night early, ordered drinks and two meals all was nice,well cooked on no delay. Not 5 stars as Landlady was a bit sharp, perhaps she had had a bad day.

My wife and I stumbled across this little gem on a weekend away, food is amazing much better then big brands we are used too. We’ve found a new local shame it 140mile round trip from our home in Essex - however never fear we will be back. P.S. the young lady behind the bar who served us was extremely polite.

Good, well kept local ales. Specials board with interesting choices of food. Very friendly and attentive staff. Equally friendly welcoming locals . We had the chilli beef and chill prawn chow mein off of the specials board. Both were large portions of very tasty and spicy food. Would thoroughly recommend.

I ate in the swan twice in july while on holiday ,Barmaid was very nice made me and my wife very weclome chatting and talking about the weather and just passing the time of day .ham egg and chips was very nice after a day on the beach .cider was also very good as it was very hot 30 deg that day .we went back later in the week with my grand daughter and daughter the made the little one very weclome nothing was to much trouble booster seat etc .my daughter ordered the 16 oz rump i am not sure if she had ever seen a 16oz steak before her face was a picture she tried her best to eat it all but failed .good pub grab and a nice atmosphere .

I've been working at a friends house over the past few days in the village and they took me out to the Swan Inn for a meal on Friday night. A great meal. The burger was one of the best I've had for a while washed down with a few pints of Aspul cider. 10 out of 10. Martin. Lincolnshire.

Without getting boring, this is the umpteenth time my wife and I have been to The Swan for Mat’s Sunday Carvery.

Yet another lovely meal at the Swan. Meat all perfectly cooked as usual. Lovely roast potatoes and real birds eye peas I believe. Will return again for some more of this wonderful food and good service from all of the staff.

Yet another visit to this well known carvery. Everything was clean and tidy as usual and the staff were good. Vegetables were nice as usual except the roast potatoes which were extremely tough to cut but this must have been a one off as they are usually delicious.

We went on a weekday evening and as soon as I walked in I noticed how cold it was. I kept my coat on until the food arrived. I had the steak special - the meat was perfect but I was disappointed with the frozen chips. There was a log burner but I guess as there was hardly anyone there they decided not to bother. Won't return.

Abundance of meat, veg and accompaniments make this the best carvery around. If you go on a normal day then there menu is varied. All meals I have had here have been delicious. The pub itself is a traditional Suffolk pub. Could perhaps do with a bit of a makeover,. But we come for the food not the decor.

We love this local venue for Sunday carvery lunch which is the best we have found, just like home cooking. Also been for their theme nights, Indian and Chinese and amazing!

Stopped for a pint and a light lunch. Choice of Adnams and Green King bitters. Very tasty IPA! Jacket potato with beans fitted the bill nicely. Sunday carvery also looked promising, shame it was Thursday. Service with a smile was excellent. Definitely worth a visit.

Always come here for the Sunday carvery when we stay in Athelington. Great value for money and family friendly staff and atmosphere.

My wife and I had heard good reports of the carvery here and we were not disappointed. We hadn’t booked but chanced our arm and found there was plenty of space when we arrived at 12:50pm. The main bar area was slightly chilly (it was a cold day outside) but the welcome was warm and we were able to get drinks and then go straight through to the carvery.
