Great welcome, stayed for 1 night while doing NC500. Stayed in the cottage. Cute little place. Best nights sleep so far. Bathroom floor was freezing, not the fault of hotel but the weather, food was amazing, large portions and very tasty. Shandwick mushrooms 😍 . Breakfast hamper had more than enough to choose from and the rest will see us through the day. No moans, would stay again.

We noticed the pub on the side of the road and called in for dinner. It is surprisingly bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. The staff were very welcoming and helped me discover a new local gin. The menu offered a great choice of meals and service was quick. I ordered the veal casserole, which was served as a very generous portion and was to die for! Although it looks a bit antiquated, I would absolutely recommend this pub to anyone who's after a hearty meal.

Highly disappointed on our latest visit to the Restaurant. The food was overcooked and the french fried chips were so crunchy, I can only describe them as like a bag of chipstick crisps! I was lucky to find about a dozen that were softer and edible. The chips we had last visit were lovely big chips so why the change? The scampi was also on the darker side too. The pizza was so hard and crunchy that it was easier to snap it than cutting it. The dessert, strawberry sundae, was nothing like it used to be to be either. Served in a gin glass and half the amount than usual. And the icing on the cake was….after travelling home, about 12 minutes, I had to run to the toilet with a severe upset tummy, as did my daughter too. I don’t know if the place has had a change of ownership or a new chef, but it’s not the same as it use to be, as it served great tasty food at one point. We will not be visiting here again.

Stayed at the Shandwick for a couple of nights at the start of our trip on NC500 - great pit stop! Room was spacious, comfortable, clean and had a great bathroom - lovely shower and large towels. Breakfast was continental and delivered to room in basket - good selection but would have been nice to have a small table at which to sit to eat. To top it all, the pub downstairs serves beautiful meals and very generous portions. Would happily stay again. Great start to our trip

The last twice we've been here, the steak has been outstanding. This time, however, it was rank rotten. It was poorly cut..... thick at one end and thin at the other, so my medium steak went from medium rare, to fat to shoe leather.

The staff went out of their way to make my husband a Cranachan desert that he had been searching for on our trip, it wasn’t on their menu but should be now after what they served up. Lay of the salt! I have been here once before and the meal and service was great. However today my partner and myself had a roast pork and roast beef. My beef was so salty and I really resented paying £16 quid for it, although that seems to be the going rate nowadays. I did eat most of my meal because I was that hungry and did make staff aware however I just got an apology and was told that it was "probably the gravy". I've honestly had better roasts at home.

As our group was too big to travel in one car, a few of us had to be picked up later, but myself and 3 kids were allowed to wait and play table football. It was already an hour after closing time by then. The table football table definitely need some maintenance though, or needs replaced.

As noted above, the food is great, but the last 3 times we have ordered for collection, they have got the order wrong or missed food. Tonight being no exception. Extra 24 miles, cold food and unhappy kids as a result. I have given 1 star, as they need alerting to the fact this is a problem. "Did you not check the food upon collection" - yes, but as the order was big and it was pitch black outside, we mistook chips for macaroni. Plus, you shouldn't have to check, they should prior to customer collection.

We drove 18 mile and still warm when we got back because its in the tinfoil dishes and filled to the brim .the sauce was creamy and cheesy and plenty of sauce and pasta . We used the collection service for takeaway my partner collected called them was given a time slot for collection got there and great for the antisocial person got it and paid for it all in the reception area great idea so no need to go in to the bar or restaurant itself fantastic we will be back again ohh and price was fair for pub grub especially with portion sizes

Went for a meal at the shandwick for the first time last night, I could not fault the meal at all, the food was really very good, but that's the only good thing I have to say about it. The food came in dribs and drabs, I recieved my meal and It was a good 5 mins before my partner recieved half of his meal, then a few more minutes before the rest of his meal arrived, The decor was seriously lacking and felt almost grubby. But the thing that really let it down was the service, it was beyond shocking. We ended up going up to the bar to order food as not one member of staff had bothered to come into our dining area, or even check on people around us, it might have been self service as not one member of staff was interested, apart from receiving our food , we did not see anyone. The staff did not have a dress code and looked as though they hadn't bothered making any kind of effort, and one even looked like she had come straight from the gym.

Use this restaurant a few times a year and went last night. The service was very average, the cleaning was poor and the decoration really needs a serious upgrade. The menu is too long. My pasta dish was not freshly cooked and I think it was a premade dish reheated in the microwave which is not good for pasta, I couldn't finish it. The wine was very overpriced. A truly awful experience on every level. The welcoming "country pub" exterior offered promise but it all went down hill on the inside. The decor is drab and dated (threadbare carpets, artexed ceilings, painted ancient wallpaper) and the dining areas are split, meaning we only actually saw one small room with 3 empty tables. Service was slow and we'd finished our first drinks before we were asked for our food order - taken by serving staff who looked like school-aged children. The menu appeared varied and tempting but the description and the reality were miles apart. I ordered sharing nachos to start but what came was a bubbling layer of microwaved cheese, covering a single burned "nacho" and what was clearly the dregs of a smashed bag of budget Aldi tortilla chips, each one no more than a few millimeters across. I showed the waitress who agreed it wasn't good and immediately whipped it away saying it would be deducted from the bill. No offer of replacement was given, leaving 3 of us watching the others eat their starters. The mains were equally horrid. My wife ordered Cajun Pasta which was served in a beige coloured sauce (and it tasted how it looked). I had chicken and leek pie which was actually a chicken sauce on a plate with a randomly plonked piece of puff pastry. There were some mixed veg too which had been cooked far too long and so were only of decorative value. The chicken was actually nice though, so at least I ate something. The children had lasagne which looked passable and came in a large portion, but this just meant they left more on their plates. Our other party members had a good go at what was served up but left most of it and an enquiry as to the quality returned a screwed up face. There were still piles of food left when we were asked whether we'd finished and two plates were removed - but the rest were still there after paying the bill and leaving. The whole experience was flat, soulless and the food was horrid, topped off with a bill of nearly £30 a head (and compounded by our later discovery that it had a failed hygiene rating). There are several other places to eat in the area that you should visit instead (a little further afield took us to the Allangrange Arms which is similarly priced but worlds apart!) If they're closed though, go hungry rather than go here. Trust me, it's the best option.

popped in here on Tuesday lunchtime. Only one car in the car park and it kind of put us off. But I insisted we try it. And we were glad we did. Only 4 women in at a table, but lunch was being served until 2.30pm. Hubby ordered the steak pie with chips and veg. and I had the haddock with chips and veg. instead of salad. I asked for breaded haddock instead of beer battered and this was no problem at all! Like previous comments, the portions were huge! I didn't eat it all but hubby did. I had a pot of tea which was served before my meal came, and again no bother to bring a pot of hot water to top up. I apologised for not being able to eat all the good food, and asked did they do half portions. NO PROBLEM AGAIN. They understand some people have smaller appetites but nowhere did it say this on the menu, and the waitress didn't enlighten us either when taking our order. So 4 our of 5 for this. The plates could have been heated which would have kept the veg. hot a bit longer as they got cold quiet quickly. So a few things for the manager to take on board. Otherwise we will be back to try smaller portions and I thought people should be aware of this.

Just a quiet Saturday evening meal in what's known to locals as "Gobie's" and to the outside world as The Shandwick Inn.As usual it was bustling with "locals" -- but as it's right out in the countryside they'd all travelled miles to be there -- and understandably so: excellent food served in very comfortable but completely unpretentious surroundings and at a very reasonable price. On this occasion my fish was served on a large plate -- but it would have needed a truly enormous plate to contain it in its entirety. And it, the together with the sauce tartare and the accompanying salad (buried under the chips in the pic) were delicious as always. My dining companion somehow or other managed to find room for a sticky toffee pudding as well as her fish and the whole meal, including soft drinks came to just over £30 for the two of us.An extra credit to the Shandwick Inn staff on this occasion. I needed a receipt for a meal for 12 we'd had there some six months previously -- as it came to over £100 (and very reasonable at the price) I'd have to enter it for accounting purposes -- and they produced it with no problem or quibble whatsoever. There's obviously back-room capability as well as culinary and front-of-house competence. This is an inn which saw the 19th and 20th centuries and is still going strong in the 21st. It's very obvious from the local accents all around one that the people from the surrounding area appreciate what it offers.

We ate here at the weekend and were deeply disappointed with the service we received. We ordered baguettes from the lunch menu and waited just over an hour for them to arrive. We were left for 45 minutes with no apology from staff or even the slightest acknowledgement that our food was late. We eventually queried it to which the member of staff did not seem impressed that we were dissatisfied and did not once apologise. She shouted over to us that it wouldn't be long and then ignored us for the rest of our time there. After 10 minutes our food had still not arrived so we asked another young girl and she came back with the excuse that the chef was trying to make sure the sausages were cooked properly. In my experience I've never come across a restaurant, no matter how busy it is, that takes 75 minutes to pan fry a couple of sausages! Our food was okay when it eventually arrived but it was not super hot and not really worth the wait. The staff didn't seem bothered at all about how annoyed we were and were making jokes about how when it's busy they have all been told to just 'smile and wave'. There was no apology or even an offer to lower the bill slightly, they asked everyone when leaving how everything was for them but not us. They seemed too happy for us to be leaving. The issue with the Shandwick is that they are usually a busy establishment so they don't actually care when customers are not happy with the food or service. We usually eat here regularly but we will be looking for a new regular spot that actually values every customer and not just the happy ones.

We arrived for a late lunch on a Saturday, and the place was not busy. After ordering we had to ask after 30 mins, when we could expect to be served. Service was also not that friendly. However when the food did eventually come, it was fabulous, good quality, freshly cooked and well presented. Portion sizes were huge. Would recommend so long as you're not in a hurry. If service was improved, it would be 5 stars

This is one of our favourite eating places for an evening meal. It can handle a vastly greater number of covers than might be imagined from the apparent size of the building and in the evening it's crowded with diners from ten miles around. Although it's located only a few metres from the A9 trunk road, it's not within walking distance of any community.

Went for lunch first and only table in. Ordered coffee and the milk given in a jug was off. Took two mouthfuls before realised sour. The inside of the jug had solid line where milk had to be sitting for some time for this to appear. Told waitress she said yeah it's off got me fresh. Felt and was sick during my lunch left food hardly touched. Told waitress and she went on to charge me full price for the lunch and the cheek to charge for the coffee! !! We were the only two in and not once were asked if everything was okay or offered anything else to drink etc. I was in no state to argue over the bill just wanted out of the place. Third bad experience here and will definitely not be back.

Was here over a year ago and food was lovely staff very friendly and we really enjoyed it. Very disappointed when went in December 28th 2018, had the worst menu, and my mum is gluten free the menu was on the back of takeaway lid. I had the fish and chips has to be the grease fish I came across. It really has gone down hill from the last time I was there and what friends have been telling me. The lady that served us had attitude and had us feel uncomfortable.

We stopped off here for lunch after setting off on the NC500 route. Plenty of parking available outside. It was quiet so got seated and orders taken quickly, and food arrived about 20 minutes later. Portions were very large (regretted order an extra side of chips as we couldn't manage all of it) and we both found the food to be tasty.

What's so difficult about providing a word of welcome, some standard pub fare in a pleasant environment? The Shandwick Inn was a disappointment. First of all, the place was cold; we all kept our jackets on. Then we waited ages to be offered drinks and menus. It took 35 minutes for standard food like scampi and chips to arrive and, what's more, there was only one other occupied table and they were about to leave. Why did it take so long?

This place needs shaking up. 1.5 hrs to get food and then it wasn't the best. The chef loves his melted cheese. It's all I could taste in the lasagne. No manager or owner. The off duty manager on her day off had to deal with it. We eat out regularly but this place will not have our custom again. Very disappointed.

Friendly staff. Very attentive. Explained that they were catering for a wedding so food might take a bit longer but we were impressed at how quickly the meal was served. Food was very tasty. Starter of shandwick mushrooms we shared and enjoyed. Big helping for a starter so more than enough to share.. Main course was equally large and tasty.

We really enjoyed our fish and chips. Good portion and friendly efficient service. Some people have said the interior is a bit dark but it is a really old building with small windows so no surprise. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Thanks to all

Having read reviews was not surprised to be seated in a dark and dingy room. The service was haphazard but saved by the food which the four of us thoroughly enjoyed. A downside was that staff called Alan’s Taxis to take us the 1.4 mile trip back to our holiday accommodation. At journeys end the driver, who should have worn a mask, charged £12! No fault of the Inn whatsoever but be aware.

We stopped here on the way home because it looks like a lovely old Inn. It was certainly popular as mid week all the tables were soon filling up by early on. The food was very good and the service was polite and helpful. We were able to pick and choose menu options that suited us (we have a plant based diet) quite easily and there was a good choice of drinks (although the real ale was bottled). The only let down for us was the ambience. The interior is rather plain. It is less pub and more a dining space. Does not detract from the food though which I will state again, was very good.

Went for Lunch and was really quite disappointed. It’s very dark and there is no atmosphere. The waitress who served us was utterly miserable and seemed rather upset that we hadn’t looked at the menus when she came to take our order. We were not told the specials either. Whilst the food was good there was a considerable wait for it. I won’t be in any rush to return.

Although not the first time we have been to this place, it was many years since our last visit. Even though we hadn't booked we were immediately made welcome and shown to a table within minutes. The menu was extensive and all was cooked to perfection, I even noticed several collecting take away meals. The staff were friendly and efficient and the portions more than adequate and reasonably priced.

I eat at the shandwick inn on a regular basis when I am working in Scotland. The menu is very basic but I do not mind. However, my potato crop had grown and died in the time it took for my meal to arrive! The floors are very cold and hard so when I had to use the lavatory it sounded like my feet were hooves going clip clop clip clop across the room. I’ve been meaning to ask where they source their vegetables as it’s hard to get a crop as good as that over in Ireland! It’s a dark establishment - I think that they need to reduce the energy saving lightbulbs and get some proper ones installed. I would also like to see more dishes of the world- a variety, for example the African favourite Jollof rice! I would close my eyes and vision myself dressed in a traditional Kanzu robe on pride rock playing the French horn with coloured beads hanging around my neck. Oh I can just taste it now. The staff are nice. I will be back oh p.s I have attached a picture of the robes as the young male waiter was asking where you get them from.

The Fish and Chip Shop is in our experience is without a doubt the BEST IN CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND! The fish was white and flakes. fried in beautiful crispy batter and the chips were perfect. We have experienced other Chip Shops in Wick,Thurso and Helmsdale, plus Mobile Chip Vans in Lybsterand Dunbeath and this has been the best so far too. We travelled around 30 miles to eat here and would do so again. THANK YOU.
