Have always enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere when coming here for drinks previously, but today was the first day I'd visited for a roast. The staff were so amazing and understanding when I turned up with a reservation for the wrong pub! My partner and I were seated at a table and made to feel like it wasn't a problem at all, and continued to receive really attentive and friendly service throughout our delicious meal! Can highly recommend the roast beef (and obviously cauliflower cheese added on!). I will definitely be back in the future, and will be sure to reserve a table in the correct pub next time!

Came here for the steak night. Service was friendly and they took our order promptly and efficiently - but we waited AGES for the food. The steak was beautifully cooked. The place has a very pleasant interior - although there was a bit of a whiff coming from the loos. Edit: had the dish and chips on another evening visit recently. It was excellent. However, the place was so loud it was practically unbearable. I was with pals and basically had to watch their mouths moving.

Id really give this a 4.5 overall, Had a Sunday roast here which overall was solid, the potatoes were not great however but a good amount of gravy and the meat (pork and lamb) and veg were tasty. The cauli cheese promised alot but lacked a bit of flavour. Service was spot on, our server for the food was attentive and gave us honest recommendations. For the first time coming here thought the pub itself was really lovely and well thought out.

First visit here on Sunday, was booked in for Sunday lunch but ended up arriving an hour early. The staff were really accommodating and didn’t make us feel like we were an inconvenience for turning up so early. We sat at the bar and had some drinks and tried to do the crossword that they had copies of. Terrible at crosswords, but really liked they’d thought of putting something like that out. Anyway fast forward to the roast dinner, I had pork and my partner had lamb. The meat was so tasty and so well cooked. A really decent amount of gravy which is something I always need with a roast. The roast potatoes were some of the better I have had with a pub roast. Overall the food was a solid 7.5/10 The staff were all really lovely and gave us recommendations when it came to the food which I always appreciate. The pub itself is just the right size with the right amount of atmosphere and goings on so will definitely be returning - especially for ribs & wings night!!!

Went on a thursday evening with a friend. I ordered the special: Gammon, egg and chips last night. Disappointed. The chips were very overcooked as was the one fried egg....really?? It should have come with 2 eggs especially for the price. Also ordered the arancini starter...like the chips the 2 rice balls were left in the fryer for far too long. My friend had the steak which looked fine but her chips were overcooked as well. The staff in the kitchen needs to pay more attention to the preparation of food....especially charging Redland prices. Still, a nice atmosphere and our waitress was lovely - great customer service.

All I can say is WOW! Don’t ever write reviews but I feel like I need to with this gaff! Had the three meat roast dinner and even though I was shocked at the price it was worth it for the amount they actually give you. I love how everything had flavour on the plate from the meat to the carrots. The cauliflower cheese is UNREAL. Travelled across Bristol to try the roast dinner here, an Easter Sunday roast that did not disappoint at all! I had the braised pork belly, and my partner had lamb. Both were delicious. The crackling, roast potatoes, and cauliflower cheese were a highlight. Best roast we have had in Bristol by far. The staff were super friendly, and got us a table quickly as we were earlier than our booking. Charlotte was our waitress, super smiley and friendly. Look forward to visiting again for sure!

Fish and chips was outstanding. Fish was fresh, mushy peas and tartare sauce were yummy. Service was quick and staff were very friendly. Having been a local of the Shakespeare three years ago (living across the road!) when Rhianne was managing, I was excited to bring my family out for a NY lunch. It was the BEST local pub and filled with wonderful memories. The pub still has the fab local warmth that it always did but afraid to say the staff and service do not… We arrived prompt for our booking at 2pm, and having place our order by 2.20pm we started to feel rather hungry and wondering where our food was by 3pm. My partner raised this with the on duty manager who assured us it was on the hot plate and on its way, yet still no food. Anyway, 5mins passed and our food arrived. It was good and tasty but no apologies given for the long wait. Having elderly relatives with us, we were on a time limit to get them home so rushed our food, and then half our party left to take our relatives home for meds, leaving the remaining party to finish what should have been a leisurely lunch. We then raised this again with the manager - who quite frankly needs a lesson in customer service, humility and general good manners! Accordingly to said manager 30mins plus is acceptable and It was on us to flag if we needed the food to arrive sooner. Okay… sure. In a nutshell… great pub, good food. Bad service, bad attitude - and was it worth £100+++ absolutely not. At least it’s not my local anymore.

Eleven people from a Social Group attended a pre booked lunch at this very pleasant and ‘proper Pub.’ Great atmosphere and sensible decor with a warm welcome from a hard working staff. Food was very well cooked, sensible portions and extremely good value. The menu is quite extensive with Vegetarian and Vegan customers well catered for. My Fish and chips was followed by a delicious sticky toffee pudding. Everyone was well satisfied with the food and the lunch venue was voted a success. Must mention the Staff, they really gave good service.

Just thought I'd entitle this review with a quote by the Bard himself as it seems appropriate on many levels. My friend and I decided on the Shakespeare for lunch having perused the menu on the noticeboard outside the pub. We were not expecting cordon bleu cooking but did expect decent pub grub at pub prices. Well, the prices were not exactly cheap - fish and chips £14.50, beef and ale pie £15.50 which we expectantly interpreted as an indication of the quality of the dishes. We ordered and paid (prior to the meal) at the bar. First red light flashed up. I was charged £33.50. "Why £33.50?" we enquired. "Service charge" came the reply. (We had received no service at this point.) "Where does it say there's a service charge?" we asked. "It doesn't, we've just recently started to add it." The landlord seemed happy with this explanation. We were not. There was now a choice to make - argue the toss or let it go. We let it go but decided to write a review which otherwise we probably would not have done. So the meals now cost us 11.67% more than it stated on the menu. Why 11.67%? Or was it £1.75 per person, or was it just made up on the spot? We looked at the landlord, he turned away. The food arrived about 20 minutes later. My fish and chips were accompanied by a small (tablespoonful) pot of bright pea green gloop. This must be, I deduced, the "crushed peas". The colour suggested peas but "annihilated" would have been a more accurate adjective than crushed. They had been, to put it mildly, over- heated in a microwave. The "beer battered haddock" - was it haddock?, I couldn't tell - was, I calculated, 70% batter and who knows what per cent beer. Had the fish - apparently haddock - been un-battered then I reckon it would have been two or three mouthfuls at best. My friend's "beef and ale pot pie" arrived looking like a freshly baked white loaf which had mushroomed out of its white pot. The accompanying mash had probably not been in potato form for many weeks as it looked as if it had been moulded like plaster of Paris. Every other example of this dish which was being served to other customers looked identical. As my friend put it: "Ready assembled frozen food straight from the factory." He punctured the summit of the flaky pastry only to find a good two inches of fresh air between the pie crust and the beef. There is pub food and there is pub food. This had little to do with the Shakespeare pub and more with some factory assembly line. Hardly recommendable. Overall very disappointing. I could have written "less than mediocre overpriced food" as my review and left it at that, but perhaps it was the influence of the pub's name that encouraged me to produced this essay. Did we get our 11.67% of service. Who knows? Just as well that they added it though because there wouldn't have been a tip - which is probably why they did. As our expectations on entering the Shakespeare were not that high, neither, thankfully, was our resultant heartache. We won't be returning.

Came here for a Sunday roast and on the whole was good. The food was nice and the pub had a particularly nice atmosphere. Only real problems were that service was rather slow, caused in the most part by the fact that we were kind of forgotten about once we had been seated, and the fact that the knives are very blunt making it a real challenge to cut food. Other than that, a nice place to eat.

We visited on the recommendation of our son who has recently moved to the area and discovered the place on a wander. From the outside the pub is a traditional looking, Victorian pub. Inside it’s been beautifully renovated and has a modern feel while retaining original features and feel. The menu isn’t extensive but has a good range and there is something to cater for everyone. There were 5 of us having a meal and we all agreed that our food was excellent - no heated microwave stuff here. I had the harissa chicken with tabbouleh and it was just perfect! The pudding portions were very generous and rounded the meal off perfectly. The atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon was lively and welcoming. We will definitely be returning.

Very good Yorkshire puds & well cooked veg accompaniments. Also added some cauliflower cheese based on recommendations & it didn’t disappoint - service was excellent. Only reason could not award 5 out of 5 was due to the food not being hot enough. A simple heating of plates would have really made the difference in keeping the food warm while completing the meal, unfortunately my last few mouthfuls of food were cold. One of the best roast dinners I've had in a long time!!! Cauliflower cheese is definitely worth getting as an extra. Lamb was delicious. Only points to improve on were: red cabbage was a bit too strong on the star anise/clove flavours, and the roast potatoes could've been crispier (but I understand that's hard to do when cooking a large amount). Sticky toffee pudding for dessert was also lovely! Already want to come back!

We booked the Pump House for a private function for our wedding reception. We had the lovely mezzanine floor upstairs and it was gorgeous. From the initial planning right up to the last minute it of the day itself, I cannot fault the experience. Kerry was so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. I’m so grateful for her recommendation of booking a ferry to take us all from our ceremony at the registry office to the pub as it was delightful and was the best way to arrive in style. The room was beautiful, the team who served us were attentive and lovely. All our guests commented on the quality of the food and drink. It felt like such a warm, relaxed atmosphere and exactly what we wanted. They made our day simply PERFECT.

Love this pub- the food’s great, the wait staff are lovely and it’s very family-friendly, with a nice outdoor play area and beer garden. It can get a little noisy inside when busy but well worth it for their Sunday roasts and their excellent puddings!

Lovely place. Very cosy bar area and quick service. The food was tasty and hot. Pub quiz was good fun and the place was pretty busy. Would definitely recommend and come back.
