The Ostrich in Bristol, City of

First time in this area of Bristol and so glad we chose to try this pub. The Ostrich was nice and Christmassy, the Sunday roast was delicious and an affordable price, and service was fantastic - efficient but not rushed, and a great atmosphere.

Simply amazing. Straight forward menu that doesnt overwhelm, but with some more unique add on options. Excellent food and the flat cider was delicious. I didnt think I liked yorkshire pudding and now I’m a believer. Perfect serving size, feel stuffed without feeling wasteful.

Absolutely divine roast, excellent service with a smile and well priced. Will definitely be returning!

The roast chicken dinner was delicious thank you. My only complaint is that it is a little expensive for what you get, but I would come back.

Stopped here for food on the way up to Ashton gate and had a great meal. A fairly busy Friday evening, but we were able to get a table and were served very quickly. I had the Reuben and my dad had the fish and chips, both were fantastic. The beer is obviously very well kept too. A really great atmosphere, with very friendly staff, will certainly be back, maybe next time we’ll try the outdoor area. Was dark when we got there but it looked to be very well maintained out there.

Called here on a Wednesday lunchtime and had a lovely lunch and being after half term in November it was quiet - no need to book a table at a quieter time - used the app to get a discount as part of the Butcombe group - food was delicious and filling and the staff were great and friendly

Great service, good selection of drinks and good food as well.

Nice bar right by river for sitting outside. Beer selection a bit lacking but you’re more there for sitting outside looking at the view than for a solid pint

Good food in a cosy water front pub, far enough from the hussle and bustle of town but close enough to walk if needed.

We held a Dinner in the upper deck for 19 of us after a few dropped out we well looked after by John and the team would highly reccommend the Ostrich for a private function. Great setting, great service.

Booked six days in advance and when we turned up we were told of the nine main meals on the menu only two were available - Autumn Salad and Vegan Burrata due to a failed delivery. While I appreciate that was out of the control of the pub, they could have rung me earlier in the day to make me aware of the situation. I was left trying to find a table elsewhere for four people at 8pm on a Saturday night. Appalling customer service. Having been previously on a number of occasions, I always recommended it to people, but no longer.

I've been coming here for the last 6 years mainly due to my mum being a neighbour and a member. The food used to be amazing; good portions & value for money, sunday roasts were wonderful lots of veggies and the meat was cooked perfectly every time but in the last 7 months or so it's gone a bit downhill food wise. Portions are small and over priced veggie & vegan options always stay the same, some of the burgers haven't changed much. You're paying more but getting less for your money. I work in hospitality and my partner is a chef I do understand the struggles in the business but £18.30 for a small burger and undercooked chips (that cost £2 a bag to buy in) is very much not ok

It's great that this pub has been taken over by the excellent Butcombe guys. In the past it was not a great pub despite the amazing building and location. I'll be going there much more often now. Dog friendly too.

Sunday roast is good but glasses and plates weren’t cleaned well.

We only had desert but that was very good. We stayed the night and it was a nice clean and generous size.

Went here to meet up for drinks, upon spending £17.60 for 2 adult drinks and 1 child's apple juice, thought, nah we aren't going to buy anymore. Very expensive for the product. Butcombe as we all know, does below average beer and paying extortionate prices for cask beer is a bit of a shocker, with it being a plastic cup for outside. Did not try the food but would be open to it. I guess its the location that feeds into the prices.

A lovely little spot by the harbor, severs very attentive and friendly. Served by Ella when we visited, the food was lovely, would definitely come back for a Sunday roast

It’s my third time at the Ostrich and as per usual it was excellent. Attentive service, good food and great aperol spritzes made by Jacob. Overall enjoyable experience, I’ll be sure to return a fourth time.

I had the pleasure of being served by Jacob last night, and he truly made the evening special. His mixology skills are top-notch, and he crafted some of the best cocktails I've ever had. Jacob's knowledge of the drink menu was impressive, and he offered excellent recommendations based on my preferences. Beyond his technical skills, Jacob's personable and engaging demeanor made the experience memorable. He was attentive without being intrusive, and his genuine enthusiasm for his craft was evident. I’ll definitely be returning, and I hope to see Jacob behind the bar again!

The food was tasty but highly overpriced for what it was. Drinks too were the usual Bristol pricey which I've grown to expect but it never fails to disappoint when as a soft drink drinker I am seemingly subsidising the alcohol prices being kept more reasonable when there truly is no reason to charge more than £1.50 for a pint of carbonated syrup. Would definitely visit again if someone else was picking up the tab as its cost versus value is too skewed for me to justify the spend especially when there are other restaurants of equal quality with lower price brackets.

Nice pub with a huge waterside beer garden. Ordering via a webpage to the outside tables makes things pretty easy with reasonably prompt service. Good selection of hot and cold drinks and the menu wasn't too bad.

Hadn't been here in a while. Even with its much appreciated make over, still a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Really enjoyed our few hours there.

Not overly impressed. I felt it was a bit expensive for what it was. I had a burger and chips. It was served on a metal tray which looked as if it had been out in the rain and was covered in blemishes associated with rust and decay. The tray was cold and therefore so was the food. A service charge was automatically included which I hate. I’m not going to rush back.

Nice pub, good service, food not great. Went for burgers on a Saturday evening and it wasn't much better than a kebab shop. The slaw was veg mixed with sickly cheap mayo. Chips were over seasoned. I did mention about the slaw to the staff and they removed it from the bill which good of them. I felt too embarrassed to complain about the rest of the food.

A good pub. It has ;a good selection of ales, a varied and tasty menu, and the staff are always helpful and friendly.

Visited this lovely pub the other weekend whilst visiting a friend and I have to say the service was absolutely outstanding. 2 young girls in particular (Ella and Katie) were so wonderful for service. 11/10.

Meal was a bit overcooked. Service great. We were a group and had reserved beforehand seats and meal. We had a private room upstairs. They managed with my diet gluten free and dairy free but just removed part that had it without making a replacement to not miss out of the roaster experience. Nice area.

We recently hired out the upstairs for our engagement party and it was fantastic! We were allowed to bring our own decorations for the space, the staff offered everything we could need and were happy to allow us to use the space how we'd like. They were incredibly accommodating - shout out to John for putting up with us and happily putting my flowers in water so they'd be fresh when I picked them up the next day🙂 Thanks!

Visiting Bristol for a few days with my partner. We stopped here for food as it was a great atmosphere. We ordered fish and chips, very pricy and the food was overly salty and the fish was dry. Staff offered a fast and pleasant service.

Amazing food we had light but very tasty

This was the perfect place to watch the balloons over Bristol during the fiesta weekend. The service was good considering the number of people and efficient as you could use a QR code. Good choice of beers and cider on tap

Pub is in a very nice position on the docks. When I visited there was only 1 draught beer in the pub on tap! Was drinking outside so pint was dispensed into plastic container. Will not be returning in a hurry, obviously far too dangerous to dispense the beer into a pint glass!

It could be alright but the male manager had the worst customer service attitude possible and even sounded aggressive at one point. The wine should have been good but all tasted like it had been open too long, possibly cheaper than the price suggests, and when I complained they did not offer to taste or replace with an alternative. They won’t let you drink wine out of glasses in the beer garden, and they closed at 9pm. They kicked us out unapologetically even though they had just sold us a drink that very second, which was one from an order of 4 so we were forced to just leave the drink as we couldn’t make our company stand and wait for one person to drink a full beverage. They served two meals on one tray (with no plates) which I thought was very weird. We asked for sauce for our chips and they did not return, instead sent the manager to confiscate the glasses our drink had been served in, and replace them with plastic pint glasses. We were entertaining our new employer and this was just an embarrassment and gave the staff a Gestapo feel, which is apt as there was huge racism riots happening that day. Walking up the road to the pub around the corner that was open to a normal time, we heard a group of people saying how awful the man was compared to the following pubs management (assuming they meant the aggressive manager) this reassured me that it wasn’t my attitude but they are actually alienating every customer, or at least treating adults like drunken students. The burger and chips tasted nice but it’s not worth over 15 pounds I’m afraid. Especially not with the standard of the staff.

Beautiful spots on the water, food is average. Too bad you get wooden cutlery and plastic cups on the terrace.

The service has improved considerably and the quality and presentation of the food was excellent. I’ve avoided in the past due to a bad experience, however credit where deserved the Ostrich has really delivered on quality food and service and has changed my opinion.

Outstanding waterside location, great outdoor seating areas, and efficient staff. Premium prices reflect its popularity.

Popped in for Sunday lunch and a couple of drinks - quality of food is very good - we all had roast beef which was delicious if i had a criticism it would be portion size - could have been larger portions given the pricing (£21.95 ea) . Staff were friendly and it’s set in a great location

Came here for a friend’s birthday drinks and had an amazing experience! John,Gabbie,Charlie,Josh,Katie and Ella were all incredibly nice and accomodating, and they made the most wonderful mocktails ever! 10/10 service and laughs all around!!

Instead I had a beer from the fridge which was cool at best, my guess is that they are trying to keep their electric bills low. They are happy for you to take bottles outside, but will only give you flimsy plastic 'glasses'' to drink from. The pub is actually owned by a brewery, though it appears that they can't even organise a 'drinking session' on their own premises. Awful. I'll be avoiding in future.

Terrible service. Huge queue and the staff showing no effort to speed up, even idling and making small talk. Get to the front to find out nothing on draft available, no apology whatsoever. Incredibly expensive. Super weak and overpriced aperol spritz. Would never return. Didn't eat so can't comment on food.

Great location but shockingly poor service. The staff seemed oblivious of how poor the service was. Can understand poor service if there are staff shortages or a technical issue in the kitchen but no explanation offered.

I visited your pub today Went in to the pub stood waiting to be served to be told if you haven’t booked you would need to go out side for food or a Drink in a rude tone So we went out side Got in a queue at your caravan Pretending to be a bar It took 18 minutes to get served One of the girls served was poring drinks so bad that they had a pint glass Topping up the pints that she was pouring because the head on the drink was half the drink We then ordered food when it turned up we had ordered 4 meals But unfortunately they only turned up on those 2 old metal trays so had to share again 4 of us two sashes of tomato ketchup The chips were over cooked the burgers looked and tasted terrible The whole experience was terrible And for 4 burgers 3 alcohol drinks and one coke it cost £95.00 Bad service rude staff poor food And overpriced Definitely won’t be going there again We went out for father’s day We didn’t even have another drink as the queue would of taken 45 minutes Not what you expect

Amazing location. The food is a joke (see below £13 of food), and they don't seem to have enough staff considering how busy it gets. Would still recommend... just expect a wait and DON'T order any food!

Alex waited on us and was extremely friendly and attentive. He made excellent menu recommendations. He made what would have been an incredible dining experience, even better. The pub has a wonderful vibe and is steeped in history. The location is prime, next to the water and makes for a beautiful after meal stroll. Would recommend 10/10.

What's with the tiny portions? Spent £14 on small plate of salty chips with some meat on top. The salad was 5 lettuce leaves with 3 falafels that were size of lollipops. Yes it was a small salad but still not value for money. Shame because it's a great location. But food portions very poor.

Food portions are a disgrace. I ordered regular fish and chips (not the kids menu version.) What I got was: - Two chicken finger sized bits of fish - approx 8 fries - the distant memory of peas. Me and my friend were in such utter disbelief at how small it was that when it was sat down on our table, we both started laughing. I literally had to go and buy a pasty from tesco afterwards because of how hungry it left me. I probably consumed more calories by brushing my teeth this morning.

We hired the private room for a wedding breakfast. The food was amazing! 10/10 and the staff we soo friendly and so efficient. What an amazing pub/restaurant. Thoroughly recommended. 😊

Smallest portion of fish n chips ever.. I actually thought it was a wind up (or possibly a starter or child’s portion £14 & I literally had about 8 skinny chips & 2 tiny fish pieces…. Very very small & rip off wasn’t even anything special taste wise will not be eating here again. Rip off

Great location and good atmosphere on a sunny day, but when it was busy you had to buy lager at the outside bar and ale inside the pub.... annoying at best, hence 4 stars

Super well decorated place with very good quality food. I was very satisfied with the roast beef I ordered and the cauliflower with cheese as a starter. Brutal. We had a great time The negative point is that the service is very slow. They are a mess and we were waiting 1 hour for the dish. On top of that, they wanted to charge us 10% on the account, which you personally have to tell not to include it.

Love this little pub, service is always great and a lovely view of the water and boats going up and down.

Really poor food, portion control very poor, you get very little for what you actually pay, the roast dinner we had was just pitiful. Cardboard potatoes 1 carrot and a few strands of cabbage. One family walked out during our visit here. Avoid this place to avoid disappointment.

This is a Butcombe pub so it’s a bit limited but the outside space is lovely and the staff are welcoming.

We went to the ostrich on Easter Sunday for a roast it was ok but I’ve had a lot better. The roast potatoes weren’t crispy and there was lack of vegetables our food wasn’t hot either.

A nice welcome at the bar, and lots of places to sit outside on a sunny day. Top notch toilet facilities too.

Had lunch from their seasonal menu: beef shin croquettes and fries, friend had beef fritters. The food was delicious and great value. Also nice tables outside by the water in the sunshine.

Probably the most expensive pints in bristol… £7 a Guinness! A lovely spot to sit but the only thing going for it, won’t be going back as so many better places with more reasonable pints in bristol
