Stopped off with my wife for lunch after visiting nearby PuzzleWood, my wife called to see if there was a table spare and one had just become available. Had a lovely welcome, it’s a nice cozy pub full of friendly locals, We had a really nice carvery, very tasty and good size portions, will definitely return on our next visit to Forest Of Dean.

We were staying at a local holiday cottage and this was the closest pub, so we decided to walk up for dinner one evening. We are so glad we did - what a great spot! The staff were all very friendly, the food was lovely (you have got to have the Beefy Bore...) and the portions were huge(!), the drinks were good, and the prices were very reasonable. Almost a shame we were only in the area for the weekend.

We have been to this pub before to watch the Severn Bore and always had an excellent time! Nothing better than a breakfast while watching the bore from this pub!! So when my car started shaking on the A38 I knew if I could get it to The Severn Bore I would have a safe place to wait for recovery! I had no idea just how well they would look after us! The staff, management and customers were awesome! We were welcomed in and looked after as if we were family! My eight year old daughter had the best time on the bouncy castles (yes two bouncy castles) and play park in their garden. I was given the wifi password and offered use of their phone and they even fixed my car before the breakdown people arrived (the wheels bolts had come loose on my front tires). Nothing was too much trouble… I’m so grateful for how they looked after us! These have to be the nicest people running a pub anywhere on Earth! We will be back soon for roast and of course to watch the next bore!!

The lady behind the bar was rude to her staff and customers. The place looks sad and dated, it puts you off strait away. It smelt of BO and smoke when you walked through the door even my little boy said mummy it smells. Our food was over cooked and greasy we could barely eat it. Oh my life….. Sunday lunch… never again! Over cooked vegetables, ineptly carved meat with lamb gone by 12 noon! Smelly pub which looked like it hadn’t been painted since the 60’s, seated in what resembled a scouts hut attached to the pub. Confusion between staff. Quickest trip to a pub we’ve ever managed. We called here on the way to a holiday let nearby. We chose to sit outside as one of our party was an elderly wheelchair user. However, we soon discovered that this was a smokers area , with a constant stream of patrons standing beside our table , smoking across us. We should have realized that this was the case, due to the number of fag ends around the table. The doorway nearby was also littered with such debris . After an hour and a half wait, our food eventually arrived . two fish and chips and a sausage basket meal. The sausage meal was passable. Three sausages and a portion of chips served in a plastic basket . Acceptable for £4.95. However the fish and chips were both totally inedible. The chips were anemic. Both portions of fish were very dark brown in colour . The fish was extremely hard , over cooked and greasy. We were unable to cut into the fish , which had been sealed by heat to the skin. Totally inedible . This was probably the worst meal that I have ever encountered . The price, almost thirteen pounds each, was a travesty . My mother in law, aged ninety , had no chance of cutting the fish and she soon gave up , even with my help! The cremated offering was also minuscule, probably due to being cooked within a nuclear reactor or similar device. I pointed out our concerns out to the waitress , who shrugged them off . No apology or replacements offered . Total spend was almost forty five pounds, including soft drinks . It would be better if I did not mention the state of the toilets . All three of our party suffered stomach upsets the next day . Avoid at all costs .

Dropped in to this pub whilst looking for somewhere to have a drink and a Saturday afternoon meal. Entering the bar, we immediately noted the cold, unwelcoming atmosphere and this got worse when we placed our drinks order with the lady behind the bar who showed very little interest in welcoming new visitors to this establishment. We took a quick look at the very basic menu, having already decided this was not the place for us and took our drinks (which by the way were served in a real miss-mash of unsuitable glasses) to the garden which was at least warmer than inside the bar. We drank up and promptly left, just wondering if we had visited on an 'off-day' considering some earlier reviews, but somehow, I don't think so!

Went there early to see the Severn Bore on a Saturday morning. We had made a booking for Sunday lunch.First impression upon walking in was that the place would benefit from a bit of a spruce up. The carpets were dirty and the decor quite tired. The breakfast wasn't ready to be served so we ordered tea and coffee in the meantime. This was delivered in polystyrene cups with the teabag still in. The only milk on offer was UHT. This meant that the drinks were disgusting and we ended up tipping them out. So far £4 wasted. When breakfast was announced we decided to wait until the queue dissipated. A good call as people around us were already complaining about the food. It was served from some trays, which appeared to be unheated, on a couple of tables near the door to the garden. There were only paper plates and the 'self service' toast came with Tesco value margarine or nothing. This was at the princely price of over £8 a throw. We decided to give it a miss. Also the smell. I can't say what it was but there was a weird smell about the place. Perhaps it was the odour of the fried food but it wasn't conducive to the appetite. We watched the bore cancelled our lunch booking, made our excuses and left.

OK it is what it is, great view of the Severn Bore, breakfast was a heafty £9 inc. coffee, fairly ordinary stuff, cheap sausges, rubbish hash browns, good bacon, mushrooms and toast, but let's put it in perspective, they are catering for many Bore watchers and it was good, albeit unhealthy, stuff. It filled the gap for an early morning watch. Can't comment on dinner etc, probably would not try it, but I am sure it would be "filling".

I certainly agree with the other persons review of breakfast before the bore. We had phoned to check breakfast was being served and told it was between 9 and 10. On arrival exactly at nine our money was taken and we were presented with a paper cup of cheap coffe powder and given a paper plate. The buffet breakfast had run out and we were given rude replies by the lady who was apparently cooking breakfast. After queuing for 30 minutes eventually some bacon arrived and we then served ourselves to the remaining watery scrambled egg and mushrooms had run out. As for toast well that was cheap white bread that you toasted yourself. Why o why were we not told at the beginning that the kitchen could not cope with such a crowd and there was going to be a wait. One lady even asked for money back after waiting for twenty minutes and was given such a rude reply. This pub needs to get its act together and charging 8.95 for breakfast with cheap coffe and cold paper cups and plates what a rip off. This could be an excellent pub in the perfect location but after today's experience I would not wish to return

I visited this pub yesterday the 30th March. It was me my brother in law and his toddler. We were attracted by the £6 steak deal advertised outside on a board. The barman was a young stocky lad and he was friendly and helpful (he readily heated up some toddler food we had brought with us). We ordered our food and it wasn't long before it came out. 6 Oz rump cooked to our order with peas chips mushrooms tomatoes and onion rings. I have to say the food was delicious and piping hot. I passed compliments to the lady who seemed to be running the kitchen. She confirmed this deal is a long running one they always offer. Now about the pub itself...I would agree that the interior is somewhat dated and tired looking (personally this doesn't bother me - it's how real pubs were back in the day before all these posh overpriced eateries became all the rage!). Does the interior matter? Not if the food and company is good! The pub is clean and welcoming. That's good enough for me. I also noted the sign above the bar: "Enter as strangers leave as friends" or something very similar. I would say this summed up our visit nicely. For those of you looking for a trendy eating experience I suggest you stay in the city - this pub is miles from nowhere and you wouldn't fit in. For down to earth people like me give it a go. A steak meal costs £6 so you don't have much to lose! There isn't easy access to the river from the pub. We will definitely be going back in the very near future!

All served up on a paper plate, issued once you'd paid. The tables were dirty, toilets cold, and mouldy, fixtures shabby. My partner and I visited after seeing lovely pics of the food on the website. The inside of the pub is tired and in need of a facelift but we decided to ignore it and hope the food was good. I had steak and he had a burger. The food was average, cooked ok with decent portions. The dessert of homemade chocolate brownie well, not sure where to start. The brownie was heated in the microwave with chocolate sauce to such an extent the sauce was like rubbery chewing gum. The brownie itself was hard, dry and we couldnt eat it- not even sure if it was homemade or frozen. If it was homemade then I am wondering WHEN it was made to be tasteless and very much like cardbord. Very disappointed, we just left the dessert and left and will not be going back. They need to improve a lot on their standards to be able to comete with the other pubs serving food within ten minutes in either direction of them. Also not sure if their chillers were not working, I never have ice in my coke and it was not cold.

First things first, although I have only given this restaurant a 3* rating, the potential is there for is to be so much more. Sadly, first impressions are everything and when visiting this pub we were unsure wether or not to eat. The views in the garden are beautiful, and with a little sprucing up the place could be brilliant. The food is actually really good, the camembert is to die for and as a result of that being so tasty, me and my other half decided to stay for an entire meal. The wait for the food was quite long considering we were the only people present. My rump steak was cooked to perfection. My boyfriend ordered a 'Belly Buster burger' - what can only be described as a mountain of meat. He did not enjoy his meal as much, but he did eat it all with little complaint. We would probably return, if only for the gorgeous Camembert.

So we deliberately arrived early, around 11 am, only to find the inn not yet open. It was still not open an hour & a half later when we left. Given the name of the establishment & the considerable number of people who came to watch at this location, I was very surprised that we were not welcomed in.

I'm a little torn on this one as I'm quite sure our less positive experience was our own fault for visiting on a Sunday evening. I know this pub is renowned for its Sunday roasts and, having previously worked in a similar establishment (i.e. hundreds of weekend covers due to location), should have remembered the poor, exhausted chef gets to go home of a Sunday evening. Also I knew before leaving the house that the pub shuts at 8pm on Sundays, so really should've saved our visit for another time. The place was empty apart from staff when we arrived, who were very welcoming and friendly - particularly Ben (I think?) who is easily our new fave barman ever. Unfortunately the credit card machine wasn't working so the chaps had to get back in the car and tootle off to find a cashpoint in the middle of nowhere, which delayed ordering and therefore meant they had to stay open beyond 8pm to accommodate us.Yes, the decor is tired and the pub is proper old-school, but new landlords will surely add a lick of paint and in a country full of gastropubs I don't necessarily feel old-school is a bad thing. We ordered nachos and baked camembert to share, which were both delicious, particularly the nachos (can't go far wrong with baked cheese) but after that things started to go downhill. Three of us ordered burgers, as they're supposed to be excellent, so I was surprised we weren't asked how we'd like them cooked. The fourth ordered fish and chips. Burgers were very bland with a tiny bit of soggy lettuce in the bun and sauces in sachets, which is just lazy. Fish was tiny. All were served with weird paprika/cajun(?) chips which were really not pleasant and on ridiculous long wooden boards, so the peas with the fish kept rolling about the place and why were there fresh peas anyway, not mushy? Dips served in sachets. We went outside to check out the river. I understand that for Bore occurances they need lighting but the floodlights did appear rather clumsily rigged up - I'm sure they could do more to make a feature of this, given that the pub is named after it, but perhaps they plan to.We'll try again in a couple of months once the new landlords have found their feet and report back.

Lots of potential here as it is in an amazing location but did seem in need of repair and refurb. Friendly staff and great atmosphere watching the bore. They weren't serving food in the pub but there was a barbecue outside which was basic ( burger or hot dog) but quite tasty.

Came here on a Sunday for the carvery with a couple of friends and we didn't expect too much. However I must say I was highly impressed with the succulent roast beef and huge tasty spuds. I would recommend for a fantastic roast

On reading reviews from others seems several of us have the same thoughts , yes the staff are friendly but the Sunday roast was really disappointing , I agree the place needs an interior facelift . To be truthful both my Daughter and myself couldn't wait to get out of there and , we ate the food, ( which wasn't exciting ) because we were starving and haven't been there since !

Called in for Sunday Lunch. They serve a carvery on Sunday, and I had the roast beef, which was very tender and tasty, the yorkshires were delicious as were the roast potatoes, parsnips and gravy. All in all a very good meal and good value for money. The service and atmosphere was also very good. Would definitely call in here again when passing.

Decided to visit as the Inn was high up on tripadvisor but was really disappointed with the place, We had a quick drink and left. The place was very musty and all the decor very tatty. It was a lovely summer Friday evening and not one person was eating at the Inn, which says a lot. The menu was much smaller than dispalyed on line, and the place desperately needs doing up, cleaning and decorating etc. We went to sit in the garden and it was very messy and unpleasant..

My family and I (nine in all) have had the most lovely Carvery Sunday lunch at The Severn Bore Inn today. From the moment we arrived nothing was too much trouble. The quantity and quality of the food was outstanding. The choice of beautifully cooked beef, pork and gammon (or some of each)! and the most fabulous home made Yorkshire puds, cauliflower, leeks in cream, baby whole carrots, red cabbage and roast potatoes was excellent. The prices for both food and drinks very competitive and the Eton Mess that my grandson and I had to round the meal off was nothing short of spectacular!!Please do not be put off by the slightly shabby exterior as it really is irrelevant to the overall experience. With such beautiful weather, we sat in the garden prior to, and after, our meal, looking out over the River Severn where we saw buzzards and kingfishers - bliss! We will definitely be returning!

Was on the look for a pub lunch whilst cycling around Forest of Dean area. This pub was just what we were looking for, river side beer garden, which although could do with a bit of attention was perfect to sit in. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the beer was well kept and the food was excellent! Huge portions and all very tasty

Stopped here about 4 months ago for a Sunday dinner. And am I glad I did. The staff is friendly and welcoming, everything is homemade and perfectly cooked. The meat is out of this world and if you are a meat eater, you will love this place. They cut it that thick, you could use it as a door stop. The trimmings are delicious as well and it is needless to say that this place is now our favourite for a Sunday lunch. Compliments to the chef! Don't take our word for it, try it!

My wife and I occasionally visit this Inn as we continually receive excellent service and the food belies the level often to be had in 'pubs'.A cheery welcome (as always) was followed by prompt serving of our lunch. This was once more excellently prepared, beautifully presented. If you are in the area may I suggest this inn for a stop.A proper inn with proper service. All are welcome, we arrived on a motorcycle and a genuinely interested conversation followed :-)5 out of 5!!

Friendly welcome and food was lovely! Could tell it was all freshly cooked, and the Eton mess for dessert was delicious. We were a bit sceptical when entering as it was very quiet and the pub itself a little tired, but don't let that put you off. Had a lovely evening and the lady that served us was brilliant too, so thank you.

Don't be put off by the broken sign or the outside appearance 'The S*vern Bore Inn' does a GREAT Sunday roast! Don't be put off by the tired and dated interior, either. The Chef here really knows how to cook a Sunday Lunch. We had roast beef and roast pork and both were melt in the mouth perfect. The scrubbed skin roast potatoes were slightly seasoned and cooked faultlessly. I had red cabbage with just the right amount of sweetening added, the cauliflower cheese was delicious and the leeks in a french mustard and cream sauce were to die for. What a find!! I don't dish out praise easily or often, but will I go back? - you bet I will. In fact, this review has reminded me so well, I might go back tonight for seconds........

We'd heard friends had been here and had strongly recommended it,so we thought we'd give it a try- we were not disappointed. We came for a Sunday Roast and it was absolutely delicious. It's a Carvery, and there was a choice of 3 types of meat - & they certainly do not scrimp on the portions! There was an excellent choice of vegetables & roast potatoes etc- & unlike a lot of places if you want more vegetables/ potatoes you can go back and help yourself. The puddings were to die for, I recommend the crumble sundae, absolutely delicious & my husband had the raspberry pastie with custard. The landlady was serving at the carvery counter and was extremely pleasant & easy to talk to.Note for old old fogies like us- they do a over 60's/ pensioner discounted price which makes it even better value for money! We go out often for Sunday lunch around Gloucester area and have to say it was one of the best Sunday lunch I have ever had- & will certainly return here soon.As its a very popular place so you will need to call & make a reservation.

Stopped in here to eat one evening but decided not to. Unfortunately the inside of the pub was quite grubby and either needs a good clean or a complete refurbish! The glasses our drinks were in were so dirty I didn't want risk eating here. The beer garden has lovely views of the river but again was very unkept. Such a shame as from other reviews I had high hopes.

We visited the Severn Bore as part of a birthday celebration. I had the best Hunters Chicken that I have ever had - both the quality and quantity were memorable. It made me realise quite how poor some "household names" have became when I compare their pathetic offerings with this little gem of a pub!

Came for Sunday lunch having read the Tripadvisor reviews and couldn't understand what other travellers had seen in this place. It's cheap and somewhat cheerful but that's really not enough. The toilets weren't that clean, and neither were the plates. The place was extremely shabby, the wine undrinkable etc. Food was OK.

Stopped by to view the Bore in the morning but they were all booked up. Returned at lunch and was glad we did. Food took some time to arrive but we were in no hurry and happy to soak up the heat from the fire and enjoy our drinks. Staff were friendly and helpful. My lunch was very good and I enjoyed every bit of it. Only wish we could be in the area during the summer. I can only imagine how great it would be to sit outside and watch the river float by while enjoying a drink and a bit to eat.

We had an amazing breakfast here last week. The unlimited breakfast is awesome. The sausages are delicious, the bacon very lean and the black pudding was the best I have ever had. The staff were lovely and friendly, even though it was seven o'clock in the morning. My seven year old was pleased to find a play area in the beer garden. It saved him (and us) from two hours of "I'm bored" in the cold, whilst waiting for the Severn bore to arrive. We got excellent seats on the decking and I have to admit that I was a little scared when I saw the wave approaching us. After the bore, we stayed for another couple of hours and watched the water level rise almost to the top of the decking. Most of the spectators left immediately after the wave, but it's worth staying to see what comes down the river afterwards. We saw a huge dredger, two lifeboats, a dog on a canoe, a gas canister and a fridge along with several trees. We will definitely visit again.

Called in for a bar snack in passing on a Tuesday lunchtime and so pleased they were dog friendly. Felt sorry for the Lady behind the bar who was running both bar and kitchen as the only member of staff on duty. A lot of things were off the menu but could be obtained in five minutes from local butcher. My wife settled for a chicken salad whilst I stuck with a bacon bap, as they were also out of baguettes. The salad was large, freshly made by the Lady, but a little plain. Nice view of River Severn from a rather untidy garden but enjoyed by the dog. Got talking to friendly locals enjoying their lunch, four ladies ordered their meal and then the bar Lady phoned the butcher for the meat, never seen this before! Prices very competitive and worth a visit even to see the bore.

Have been to the Bore a couple of times and both times have found the service and staff to be great. The first time was for a Sunday lunch and I was amazed at the amount of meat (all locally sourced and cooked perfectly) that was put on my plate, and to be able to go back for more too ... Although I was totally unable to due to the amount already on the plate. The second time was for breakfast when a 5* Bore was going to be happening. Busy was not the word for the amount of people going into the pub, but the breakfast was very good, with quality sausages and bacon and all the trimmings of a great breakfast. Again able to put as much as you like on the plate ... And again probably put too much on as was very full afterwards. And to top it all off, my fiancé is a vegetarian and they provided veggie options for her too. Would recommend everyone to try the food here.
