We hadn’t booked a table but decided to try our luck at The Rising Sun. Despite being fully booked, the landlady warmly welcomed us and offered us a spot in the bar area. To our pleasant surprise, just 10 minutes later, a lovely waitress let us know that a table in the restaurant had become available, and she kindly transferred us there. The food came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. We ordered roast beef and chicken, both of which were cooked to perfection. The whole experience was so enjoyable, and we’re already looking forward to going back – but we’ll be sure to book next time! The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, accommodating us even though the restaurant was fully booked. A lovely atmosphere, great service, and top-notch food. Highly recommended! We arrived at 12 noon on a Tuesday for light lunch. My wife stood at the bar for 5 minutes whilst being ignored by 3 ladies behind the bar. Finally she decided to speak up and was told someone would be with her shortly, despite her being one of only 2 customers waiting. The food arrived promptly but the tuna baguettes were poor quality soft rolls with plain filling. We asked where the portion of chips were. The lady was unaware of the order and went to get them. When she returned eventually, the chips were obviously reheated long after being fried.Very sort, oily and inedible. We left the chips and the pub. 3 hours later the baguette is still repeating on my wife. Poor service , terrible food, nice location. I can add we visited on the previous Sunday for a drink and the cokes were flat very unpleasant should have taken the hint.

We stopped at this pub for a drink. After reading the food reviews, we thought that we wouldn't stay for a meal, but fancied a bowl of chips. The chips were a real disappointment. Limp and far too greasy. The oil in which the chips were cooked smelled and tasted rancid. The chips weren't fresh at all and I was wondering if they had been reheated. A very disappointing experience. The beer was great though.

I booked to stay in the flat above the pub for a couple of days before new years eve back in October through air bnb, my last payment was taken on the 13th December from air bnb and i received a pack your bag e-mail on the 21st December. i drove for 5 hours to get to the pub to meet up with friends, i arrived about 1pm and advised the bar staff that i was staying in the flat but couldnt check in till 4 (this is when they should have told us), so we ordered beers and lunch by the time we all had 3 pints and lunch they then decided to tell us that we didnt have anywhere to stay (1.5 hours after we arrived). they took no responsibility for this blaming it solely on the "agent". the management were more than happy to take our money and then make us drive home after drinking 3 pints, they then refused to refund the money spent over the bar which we wouldnt have spent if they had told us as soon as we arrived. they did try and call around to find us somewhere to stay but did all this without telling us first so we could make our own mind up but instead just served us alcohol.

Staying nearby so decided to visit this pub for a late afternoon dinner. Children’s play area outside and little wooded area which the kids enjoyed. Easy to park, but couldn’t find the entrance, think the car park is at the back and has to go up some steps and through a gate to find the front door. Nobody welcomed us so I went and found some menus. We found a table outside and then went back in to order drinks and food. Food came quickly. I had sweet potato and butternut squash curry with chips and rice. Chips were ok, but didn’t taste fresh, nobody else liked them. Curry had a nice taste, but skin was left on the butternut squash, which ruined it. Bacon and Brie baguette was nice. Kids Mac n cheese was good. Scampi was poor quality. Kids meals came with ice cream. No other desserts offered for adults. Disappointing, won’t return.

This used to be our local but we moved away. so we decided to call in for old times’ sake. We had a very disappointing lunch. There was no ham(?!) so we chose fish and chips. Huge portions but the batter on the fish was weirdly yellow and the chips were soggy and oily. Our five year old went for the macaroni cheese off the kids menu. It was very unappealing, with no veg and was very stogy. We sat outside at very tired tables and the whole place looked as though it needed some TLC. We shan’t be going back.

We had a lovely meal here while camping in the area for the weekend. The service was good and the staff friendly. We had the burger which was excellent (and with a pretzel bun which I loved), the butternut squash curry (also excellent). Kids meal portions are pretty big, like small adult size, so young kids like ours would have been fine to share a portion. Atmosphere was really nice too, we were there on a Saturday evening in August and there was live local bands playing a variety of music. They are dog friendly too, our pooch got a fuss made of him and a biscuit. Really couldn't fault the place, top marks would definitely recommend.

Lots of outdoor seating out the front and back. Kids play area and large green. Regular live music with a good crowd of people. Friendly and welcoming staff. There is a huge pond which hosts a variety of wildlife, we often see dragonflies and other interesting bugs. Last time we were there we were treated to a flock of 9 ducklings! As for the food, always top notch. Traditional pub grub on weekdays and a Bangup Sunday roast. Lots of puddings on offer and lots of specials on the board. Wish this was my local but 150 miles is a bit far. Perfect as a Brit stop. Had 4dinners and two lunches a lot of black and tans (no Porters). Partner enjoyed the Shiraz and the other two family members with us just as happy. The choice, price, quality, helpings of food were exceptional. The staff, all of them were the best and the landlords husband and wife team plus other family members were hands on and incredibly friendly. Silver band and a guitar duo earlier on Sunday were very enjoyable. Obviously they run this inn to make a profit but my gut feeling was they wanted to help and serve more. They have been running this pub for 10 years and I hope will continue until I cannot drive there anymore. It will always be my stop off when in the forest of Dean. We decided to try the Rising sun Inn as most of the reviews were good, so we ordered our drinks and sat outside whilst deciding on what to order for dinner, I chose lasagna with garlic bread and hubby ordered Boar sausage and mash so whilst we waited this awful smell from the klargestar was off putting at the least (we sat in the lower garden) when the food arrived... Well I hope my picture of the lasagna will clearly show that it's more of a cottage pie with pasta sheets no layers of white sauce and very sloppy also the garlic bread had a strange taste to it and god knows what happened to the non existent garlic. Hubby's sausages were good but said it was instant Mash., the staff training is something to be desired. Don't recommend based on our visit would be 0 star if I had the option

The homemade food was delicious but unfortunately due to a bit of a mix up with the staff, the soup starter and main meal were both delivered at the same time ! This was quite quickly rectified and I had an apology. Before turning up for a meal I would recommend pre-booking a table as they do get busy. If you just turn up you are quite likely to be disappointed. The surrounding area is very pretty.

No offer to go get them for us or apologies for them not being there! So poor customer service for sure!
