Disgraceful. Couldn't understand the man in the 'reception', looked like a poor quality Indian restaurant. Graffiti on the door on 1st floor. Utterly ghastly so we left without unpacking and forfeited our money as we couldn't face staying in such a dump, and they have the nerve to charge £££ for breakfast.

Arrived in Alnmouth at 3pm today. Had a good look round, decided a couple of pre dinners drinks and spotted board outside The Schooner Hotel advertising Indian and English menu, takeaway. Perfect. We will have a couple of drinks and pick up some Indian takeaway starters to enjoy at our lovely cottage. Man at reception advised no chef, no Indian food, only option fish n chips or scampi n chips to sit in. Can someone ask them to remove the menus from the windows ( Indian and English) and board from the street then no-one will be fooled into thinking they can have an Indian meal. It is not rocket science.

On arrival the hotel was well presented, room was clean and tidy, bed was comfortable, breakfast was OK but pricey, had an evening meal on the Saturday night, it wasn't very good at all ,at 8pm in the evening they had "run out "of a lot of things on the menu, and the meal tasted as if it had been reheated in a microwave, would definitely not recommend this establishment to anyone especially as my partner had strong stomach pain a few hours after eating here

A large hotel on the main street of popular Alnmouth. In need of some TLC, the decor a little tired, some effort has been made but it looks to be a long project. The manager was friendly and welcoming. Our room was quite small, but at least clean and comfortable. We were only there for the one night so it was adequate.

The Indian food here is absolutely delicious! I've been lucky enough to travel around India and lived along the Curry Mile in Rusholme and I can say with confidence that this is the best curry I've ever had. The spicing is perfect and the chicken sizzler dish was divine. Highly recommend!

To be honest, all the reviews gave us a bit of a fright. But when we checked into the schooner hotel, it seemed really lovely, historical, beautiful and full of character. We got room no 31, which had a beautiful seafacing view. The food tasted amazing. The people in charge, Sam and Martin, were really hospitable. They welcomed us very warmly and honestly the Indian food there was one of the best I've ever had in England. English breakfast too in the morning was really nice and fulfilling. I think guests need to bear in mind that the place is almost half a century old, 453 years old to be precise. Which is amazing. So it's important to not expect 5 star stuff and understand that many aspects of the building like electrical work etc cannot be changed without compromising the historic integrity of the building. It's so great that Northern England's sailing legacy is still being preserved by people like Sam and Martin. Will definitely visit again when we're at Alnmouth. It's now become our favorite vacation spot.

***WARNING PLEASE TAKE NOTICE*** Stayed with friend in this dirty ,pitted ,smelly, mouldy, dank ,damp, dangerous, many health and safety issues, depressing hell hole of a hotel...Having stayed 2 nights yes 2 nights in this absolute dump could not wait to leave and get home to sanitize myself and clothes, DO NOT UNPACK unless you wish to have smelly clothes of which lack of clean places to hang or put in drawers as they are unclean ,also by not unpacking you have a quick getaway have to be insane to stay in this place,(we did try to get somewhere else but all places booked up as busy bank holiday). Sockets off the walls, mould and damp everywhere, not safe to stay, extensions and wires all over the place in bedrooms, electric wall sockets not screwed into wall, my bathroom had electric socket of the wall exposing wires, fan not working cracked and broken tiles ,I did not use the shower in my stay as its so bad and dangerous. I made a schoolboy error by not checking reviews prior to booking, please read reviews and make your own judgement on this establishment. Please DO NOT eat here, you will find out why when you read the rest of my review. Once I returned home the next day I have contacted Trading Standards, Fire & Safety, Public Protection & Health & Safety. I have read online that the owner was prosecuted due to Breach of Fire Regulations, heavily fined and on 2 year suspended prison sentence, he obviously not adhered to this as he has fire doors wedged with tables and lumps of wood!!! He has a zero rating for Food Hygiene, another court case kitchen closed down due to rat infestation in kitchen...You do not need to look far to find this on social media. They get you to sign a declaration NOT to take photo's and post on social media without permission...Red Flag!!! I am giving people the 'heads up' on this place...AVOID...If you going on a spooky time you will be disappointed as the spirits would of disappeared many many years ago and never to be seen again in this hell hole!!!

The Indian restaurant, we came here expecting a nice night in and a nice Indian take away. At first the service was nice but slow. Once we received the food we returned to our house, the food was tasteless and tasted more like the floors of New Delhi rather than the cuisine I would NOT recommend and highly advise looking for somewhere else if you want appetising food to eat. Additionally, when we went to complain about the food the host at the front was rude confrontational and very unhelpful, I advise for your own enjoyment and sanity to go someplace else

I struggle to give this place one star. It is discusting. The smell of damp and muste is what hits you first apart from the very rude staff. We had booked a room with ensuite, carpet was discusting and so much thick dust everywhere our ensuite was in the corridor and tea and coffee facilities were also down the corridor a kettle on an old kitchen unit. We had a curtain rail but no curtains, TV didn't work and bare wires hanging in the corridor. We tried all through the village for alternative accommodation, but everyone was fully booked due to the puffin festival. We had been travelling for six hours and had no choice but to stay ,although I wish we had slept in the car. We ordered a G & T no offer of ice or lemon and 2 packets of crisps (£3) which were out of date. We couldn't stomache breakfast just got up and left. Had a beautiful breakfast at a little tea room across the road. I will find it hard to trust Booking. Com again. This hotel for health and safety reasons should be closed down.

Update Dec 2023: This place is still open and with a zero star health and hygiene rating! Walked past today and almost vomited at the stale pint of water full dead flies featured in the window. When are they going to get shut down? When someone dies because of their lack of cleanliness and care? Disgusting place - avoid. Orginal post, May 2023: Went here for a Sunday evening meal. The experience was dreadful - the place was filthy. One of our starters (veg samosa) was cold and still frozen in the middle. We raised this with the staff who stuck their finger in the middle of the samosa to check if they were actually frozen. The main dishes were clearly recycled from Sunday lunch - roast potato, broccoli and cauli in a sauce. The other dish, lamb. As a gesture of goodwill the staff knocked the cost of the samosa, plus £2, off the bill. We googled the food hygiene rating for the place before we left, only to find it was rated zero. Someone will get serious food poisoning if they don't urgently make improvements in basic health and hygiene.

Well to start with, nobody answers the phones, there are no staff about when you go in.You are left standing at the bar for ages. Customer service is atrocious. The atmosphere is horrendous. It is dirty and mould on walls and ceilings. There is water dripping from a hole in the ceiling also. The chairs and settees smell and the worst thing ever is the rat poisoning and rat traps behind the chairs. Please DO NOT enter this building. Lunchtime Indian seemed a good idea after a good walk in the morning, rather tired surroundings but decided to give it a go since you cannot always judge the quality of the food by the surroundings, however I was quite wrong. The vegetarian platter was 2 x samosa’s and a load of onion bhajis, technically a mix but far below what you would typically expect. The salad accompanying it was obviously in mourning for the summer having passed and seemed about as depressed by the decor than we were. The mains came with all the flair of a wet flannel. Soggy rice masquerading as pilau, mains ok but tasted as if the gravy came out of a bottle. Wife liked her vegetables so some consolation. The naan seemed more like a paratha and certainly had never seen the inside of a tandoor. If you love Indian food, steer well clear, it does not taste like the chef does!

Table was booked for 6pm, we arrived at 545pm and the doors were locked, we then came back around 6pm and still locked, with no sign, tried calling and could hear phone ringing but no answer. We are relieved this was shut after seeing the other reviews, but absolutely shocking. However a lovely restaurant nearby managed to squeeze us in, and it was perfect, so would recommend Hope and Anchor!

I would say the only positive of this place is the location. The reception was dark and dingy and the smell coming from the kitchens was purely fat. We were then sent to our rooms, inside was a very basic room that was utterly vile. There was bits on the floor from god knows who long ago. The towels were still wet and did NOT smell clean, even the toilet roll was damp and had only a few squares of paper left. The lamp had traces of mould on it, we immediately left and were shown to one of the supposedly nicer rooms but that was just as bad. We left and have asked several times for a refund but the manager says the room was OK. It certainly was not.

Hotel has went downhill since we stayed a few years ago. We stayed for a night and decided to try the restaurant…. Food- the hotel has an Indian restaurant so I had a curry, no complaints and I enjoyed it, my wife chose sirloin steak….ABSOLUTELY AWFUL and she left half of it. Absolutely no idea how to cook the steak and it wasn’t a cut of sirloin, and when we questioned where the mushrooms and tomatoes were they returned 5mins red later with these…covered in batter and deep fried!! AVOID THE ENGLISH MENU AT ALL COSTS!!!…..but if you enjoy Indian food I’d give it a go. We returned just after 9pm for a nightcap to discover the bar closed and they were just about to close the front door. The room- in need of an update. Paint flaking and curtains need to be thicker to stop light coming in. No phone to reception ( mind you as there was no one there that wouldn’t have mattered!) Breakfast- Again, AWFUL!!….in fact it’s worse than that, it’s disgusting!…..the full English consisted of one sausage that certainly wasn’t freshly cooked-one bite was all I managed. Bacon, you get one slice covered in grease. Egg…mine was burst and the yolk hard, beans…cold. Coffee…Luke warm. All in all sorely disappointed in this hotel and won’t be returning. We spent £123 on the room for the night, £74 on dinner and another £35 on breakfast. Save yourself a fortune and a terrible night and stay somewhere else!

Arrived at this place soaking wet after a walk on a rainy beach. First place we came to. Refused hot drinks despite an empty bar. No help with finding another suitable place. Left Alnmouth without a coffee.

I wish I’d read the reviews beforehand. My husband and I were looking for a place for tea and everywhere else had queues (HMMM - I should have spotted the clue). We went in because the outside decked courtyard is attractive, with a nice view and cycle racks for our bikes. No one came to serve us (2ND CLUE!) I went inside to search out some service. Guy was deep in a conversation in the phone. He did put the phone down when I asked for two teas and filled two mugs with bags and hotish water, placing them on a tray with long life milk. I asked nicely for some fresh milk and was told rather rudely (3RD CLUE) that they didn’t have any. I said I was surprised as they are a hotel and surely serve jugs of milk at breakfast. I was told I couldn’t have any. I asked if they had any cake, there were packaged muffins and shortbread in offer. We were famished so bought one...total £6! I told the guy that I wasn’t impressed and we would leave a poor review, he wasn’t bothered and went back to his phone call. My husband and I looked at each other, it was laughable. I’ve now read some other reviews and would definitely say. DON’T BOTHER! It’s terrible.

This is a terrible place. We were struggling to get a table anywhere and then found this place, I now know why they had plenty of tables. The drinks were so so, although no real ales on tap. I fancied a curry, and there was supposed to be an Indian restaurant as part of the facility. The prices were very steep, but I was on holiday so I decided to treat myself. £15 for a chicken madras with rice. When it came, I swear it was exactly the same as a Tesco’s ready meal that I often keep stashed in my freezer. Not only that, but I don’t think they’d thawed it out or got it properly piping hot, cause it made me need the toilet within half an hour of finishing it. Disgraceful and shameless place. Walk on and queue elsewhere if you have to.

This is what came after waiting ages and paying £23.40 for these plus a pint and a half of coke. The cold tortilla wrap contained one luke warm sliced sausage (nothing else). The whitebait had a small pot of mayonaise based sauce with it. That's it. Make your own mind up if that is fair value. The couple sitting on the next table with drinks only, who stay in Alnmouth regularly said they never eat there, "just look at the reviews"I just wish we had read them beforehand because they do not lie. Shockingly poor food and service.

We only came here as it was the only place open for a coffee in Alnmouth. The approach through the arch isn't great with junk and broken remote controls strewn around. It has the look of grand plans for renovations not fully realised and therefore looking the worst for it.Their only appeared to be two staff on and one didn't speak much English. The hotel was dirty and every single table was full of empty glasses and finished meals. Some tables looked liked they'd not been cleaned in days. There was only the barest nod to Covid-19. It looked like it should be a good place, but unfortunately it wasn't.

Having read previous reviews we suspected this was a place to avoid if eating. However, we only wanted coffee and the outside area had nice views so we ventured in. Went to bar to order 2 cappuccinos only to be told the machine wasn't working so there was only ordinary coffee. The bar area stank of body odour and was very dark and dingy.Coffee came to £7!!!. Took it outside, had one mouthful and nearly choked!!! The taste was vile. Took it back into the bar area, and told the man what I thought of his coffee and the price being charged for it, he just shrugged his shoulders and took the cups away.NEVER AGAIN.

We often have lunch in Alnmouth but as our usual place was closed we decided to give The Schooner a try. Unfortunately it was really quite dirty, the food was bad (the smoked salmon with brown bread came with some white sliced and rather questionable egg salad). The drinks were vastly expensive as well - we had 4 soft drinks and 1/2 a pint of cider and it cost about £20 which I thought was pretty steep. There are some great places to go in Alnmouth but sadly this is not one of them.

Called in for a drink. Very expensive . Poor standards with staff. Poor hygiene of staff and didn’t wash hands after using toilets. We sat outside with lovely view on a very pleasant evening. On the floor was some glass in a pile near our seat and a lot of rubbish on floor. Ladies toilet smelt of urine . Would not go again. It did look appealing from outside, however !

Ate here last year and everything was ok, bit pricey !!Came back this year, we sat outside empty glasses on tables, wasps buzzing around !!!My friend went in ordered drinks came back with menu, I went in to order the food, there was 2 guys working the bar and taking orders, younger guy fine, older guy got a bit of a attitude, he took my order but never gave or told me to take any cultery, he came out to clear the table at which point we were changing tables because of the Wasps, he saw us moving he took some empty plates but not the empty glasses or the 1/2 full bottle of orange which was obviously attracting the Wasps, Wen he brought the food out he was very rude because we,d moved tables but he knew this but had obviously forgot, he was twisting away saying the food would go straight back to the kitchen !! He didn't bring any cutlery with him and neither had anyone else, by this point my friend had just gone to the bar to get more drinks which meant I then had to leave the food and go and get some cutlery, Wen I started to eat my food it was only warm so I had to take it back and ask for it to go in the microwave, my friend had the lasagna which was very small and came with abt 6 Chucky chips and a very poor salad, which again was only warm, it's not the cheapest of places to eat but has a nice area outside to sit, before I left I used the toilets which absolutely stunk from the outside and inside there was a bin next to the toilet which obviously hadn't been emptied all day, these things are important at this present time with the corona virus !!! I wnt be going back again after today, service was bad, food was rubbish and not worth the money, drinks over priced and the toilets needed a good clean !!!Will definitely go to the sun Inn next time as it has excellent reviews

Having read previous reviews find it difficult to see what people are complaining about. Yes the hotel rooms could do with updating, apart from that the hotel had a one way system for Corvid. Hand sanitiser dotted around the hotel. The Indian food was absolutely delicious and staff very friendly and helpful Martin and Shamim(Sam). Would definitely stay at this hotel again. Thanks guys

We've just left this terrible pub having been ripped off with £3.50 terrible coffee. After ordering and being told the price we were gobsmacked and after querying the guy said "well it's proper coffee"!! It was like instant coffee fizzed up, made round the back in a few seconds. They made zero effort to prevent Covid and we really regret going. Avoid and don't support these con men!

We were two couples visiting at lunchtime while on holiday in the area. We sat in the pleasant outside space. The tables were dirty. Nobody came to attend to us so we went inside. After a very long time a man appeared, took an order for drinks and sandwiches, said he'd prefer to be paid in cash, and gave us a wine bottle holding a wooden spoon to put on our table. No masks, no cloths, no wiping of anything. The horrible sandwiches were dry, with almost rancid mayonnaise in them, It was all quite disgusting and I would not recommend it to anyone.

I should’ve known better. Went in for a cappuccino after a bike ride and was served a milky coffee without any froth. But I still went back in the evening for an Indian meal. On entering, I couldn’t detect the usual aroma of Indian spices. That should’ve rung the alarm bells! I asked if they served genuine Indian food. “The chef has been cooking Indian food for the last 30 years! And Bangladeshi!”I swallowed the bull and kept an open mind. I ordered a couple of popadoms, a Chicken Korai and a pint of Moretti. £23!!!The popadoms were nice and crispy. The Korai sauce was more like a tomato soup with a few slices of onion and two slices of green pepper. The spice rack must’ve left the kitchen. Absolutely tasteless!!! A supermarket-bought meal would’ve been a million times better and cheaper. What an absolute waste of a meal!!!!

We came for a quick lunch and ordered a sandwich and a salad. After paying for this we were told there was no forks for the salad and there was nothing they could do. If we had know this we wouldn’t have ordered. The staff were very dismissive of the problem, offering no help or solution. Shocking from the manager on shift

This was a total disastererous lunch at Rosemarys. There is no sign to tell you to order at counter and pay, the staff just look at you!!!. I ordered 2 fruit scones 1 plain scone and a tomato soup. Cappuccino and Latte and decaf Cappucino. Paid £29.00 very expensive, as I actually never got one of the fruit scones. The two girls serving seem very disinterested in serving the customers and I couldnt see who was doing the cooking in the cupboard!. I received one of the coffees and it was stone cold, asked for it to be heated & think they just microwaved it as came back in same cup!!. Soup was served without my fruit scone, it was actually ok, but I will not be returning any time soon. And to top it all they do not have customer toilets!!!!! what kind of a cafe is this!!!!! 😡😡😡

We was celebrating a birthday in a group of 7 women. The place was beautiful, clean, spacious and well cared for. We had an amazing party in the massive kitchen. The living room is huge and stunning. The bedrooms are spacious, spotlessly clean, with comfy beds. We also went to the pub below, the locals was so friendly and the bar staff was outstanding.
