We had tickets for the show and though we usually go to one of the restaurants nearby we decided to try the Theatre's own restaurant as it is much more convenient. Definitely a good choice. Good service nice though minimal decor. The reason the reviews are mixed is that they refer to both the actual restaurant and also to the snack bar. So read reviews carefully to make sure you are looking at the restaurant ones which are generally very good whilst the snack bar gets the mixed/poor reviews. Food first class , my wife had been a bit anxious about going there but she was very pleased. Starters : Mushroom arancini, ham hock . Excellent Main : Trout , venison haunch. Excellent Dessert : Lemon tart , toffee pudding . Nice end to the meal. Nice bottle of Carmenere red wine Municipal Parking nearby is easy if you go for dinner and it helps when the show is over as you get away quickly. Will go again

Disappointing overall but prices are very reasonable for some items. It would help if there was a sign on arriving saying that it is counter service. We stood to the side for a while expecting to be seated as in the previous cafe. Nice and airy room but rather lacking in atmosphere. They have tried to brighten it up with rather revolting garish artificial flowers on the table which I moved off. Tasty carrot soup but one of us had to ask for it to be reheated. Sausage in a roll very enjoyable. Houlloumi salad was meant to be with lettuce and tomato. No tomato on roll, had to be asked for and presented chopped into pieces in a small bowl, better presentation would have helped. Also the lettuce was disgusting, a thick piece of the outer leaf of the vegetable, very off putting. Overall I am not sure if I would visit again except for just tea/coffee as the cakes looked good and good value. How can such an establishment which is newly opened with a lot of money be this disappointing. The staff could also have been a little more welcoming although the lady with the longer hair in plaits was very pleasant. Come on Malvern, don't let us down. Such a well known and well visited theatre with a lot of money recently put into it, why hasn't a little more been spent on this area. I am disappointed in myself having to write these comments.

As a visitor to Malvern I decided to have lunch at The Scene, I ordered a vegan falafel salad. A few bites into the salad I noticed a caterpillar crawling out from the lettuce. I did not want to cause a fuss so tried to discreetly return the salad to the counter, the waiter apologised and I tried to make light of it. I was offered another salad but feeling quite sick turned it down. He asked if I wanted something else I didn’t. I wasn’t offered a refund which wouldn’t been the first thing I would do in that situation. Despite me making light of it I was upset by this I just wanted to leave as soon as possible. However I was more concerned by the reason that I was given ‘we buy the lettuce leaves in and don’t need to wash them’ Anyone that has been involved in catering knows the importance of washing leaves. It’s concerning that everyone eating here is eating unwashed leaves. I did contact them via a form on the Theatre page but it’s been over a week and no reply.

Called to book a table and told the restaurant was full but the bistro didn’t take bookings so we could just come in and find a table. Arrived at 10 past 1 for a 2.30 performance. No tables and a 96 year old mother having difficulty standing. Managed find her a chair and ordered three salads at 20 past 1. They didn’t arrive. And didn’t arrive. At 2.00 husband checked if we had been forgotten. How long does it take a well staffed kitchen to assemble salad. The food arrived at 13 past 2. We bolted it and got into our seats at 2.32. A thoroughly unpleasant experience all round. Poor Mums Christmas present so shame on you, Malvern Theatre.

we booked a meal (for 2) before the evening theatre 17 January 2023. The main course was fish (rolled in pancetta) and vegetables. whereas the food looked OK, it was bizarre! It must have been prepared some weeks previously, then heated (sort of) before serving, as some bits were hot, others cold! but the sweet was equally bizarre: a chocolate torte with strawberries. the torte had been frozen, and not thawed. It had the consistency of foam rubber. Inedible (and I did try!!) It intrigues how you would cook something so bad!

Visited with a frind for a light lunch. Staff lovely and helpful. We had homemade tomato soup with granary bread. The soup was delicious but the bread was not as fresh as it should be and it came with some horrible butter substitute, not real butter. If it is a vegan option, we were not asked whether we wanted one. The resaurant is light and airey but all the hard surfaces mean there is little to cushion sound and the pop type background musak is completely unnecessary and only makes hearing eachother more difficult. Background music not wanted ot needed!

Firstly I am absolutely not against vegetarianism. I am however a low carbing diabetic that relies on protein meals to keep my blood sugar down and I like to have a choice. Every singe starter on tonight’s menu.. every. single. one.. was vegetarian with huge amounts of carbs in the form of bread, nachos, tortillas and rice. If you’re going to cater for dietary needs please remember those of us that can’t do carb fillers. I remember the pigeon breast starter I had here last year with great fondness, and I used to look forward to coming here for interesting and imaginative meals.

Event catering at its best - they catered for 50 in the circle bar and the Blackwell terrace for our Ruby anniversary. Many of our guests said it was the best event they had ever been to. The venue is lovely, with great views of the park. The food was the best ever ... and the service was just as brilliant. Prices were not over the top (although we haggled for corkage as we do not like the expensive house wine). During the organisation David Wright the catering manager was a fund of useful ideas. Everything was so slick and effortless. It was one of the best days we can remember.

We are members of the theatre but had never eaten in the Bistro before - I booked the Celebration package, which includes a 3 course dinner plus theatre tickets because I was always jealous of those people who ate desert during the interval. The menu was great - we included a determined meat eater, a flexitarian and a fussy teenage vegetarian, so pleasing every one is usually very tough and a source of tension - not at the Bistro. The package included champagne on arrival and wine - both of which were delicious. Staff were friendly, swift, efficient and the best quality - flexible - about the way we shared out the drinks, the orders, and when and where we had each course. The starters, mains and deserts were all really good - eating out is a rare treat but we've decided that we'll make a habit of dining here because it is such a perfect way to expand upon the pleasure of the theatre itself. Congratulations to the staff and particularly the chef on catering for a range of tastes.

I have been enjoying lunch at the theatre but today was very poor. Sorry - just quoting a line from our favourite musical, the reason for our visit to Malvern and an enjoyable meal in the bistro. We booked as part of the theatres "celebration package" which included show tickets and a meal with champagne and wine - excellent value. Some reviewers comment that the bistro resembles a cafe or even factory canteen. I have eaten in a few canteens over the years, but not like this !. The place is bright and airy but decor is good and furnishings certainly not canteen standard.Staff were attentive, quickly bringing our complimentary champagne and taking the food order. Starters arrived really quickly, calamari was good and I could happily have eaten more. Mains followed swiftly - maybe a bit too swiftly - and the lamb was well prepared and melted in the mouth. Other reviewers complain of small portions. True, the portion is not on a par with a McD's "go large" but it is filling, unless you favour obesity. Another reviewer called it "pretentious", presumably since the main is served in a large dish. Now I like to eat fish and chips from the paper, but shoulder of lamb with roast potatoes, braised red cabbage and artichoke purée ?, I'll take the dish.I really should have gone for the Malvern pudding like the Wife, but instead chose the cheeseboard and regretted it. Nothing wrong with it, it just wasn't Malvern pudding, which looked great, as did the lemon shortcake which I did manage to rob a mouthful of.A nice touch is being able to return to your table during the interval for pre-ordered drinks while the assembled hoards queue up at the bar.One minor gripe - not specifically the bistro - would be that the toilets really could do with regular maintenance during the day. Visiting late on what had been a busy Saturday meant evidence of scattered paper and general untidiness. The theatre hadn't created the mess, but ought to clean up after disrespecting idiots leave it behind. The celebration package offers a really special night at the theatre and great value for money. And the bistro isn't a cafe, or canteen. Far from it.

I ended up having a totally bland veggie risotto and my friend ended up having a starter - calamari rings with a few green leaves! - and a sweet which she was also unimpressed with. Decided to try Scene for a pre show meal and were certainly not disappointed. Seated very promptly and ordered drinks, which arrived in a matter of minutes. Menu is a little limited but supported by a 'special' so adequate if not inspiring. We both ordered the fish and have to say both were excellent quality pieces of hake with a very good ragu and dill potatoes. The sweets were absolutely scrummy, the Malvern pudding with a topping of sherry custard with brulee finish really did go down well. Coffees, ordered with the sweet, were served minutes after completing the meal -brilliant timing. The bistro would be excellent were it not for the atmosphere and canteen style layout, all a bit clinical. The staff were excellent throughout, friendly, smiling and totally efficient. We will certainly return for future visits to the theatre.

I was eating mid week before the theatre. The restaurant is within the theatre complex which makes it very convenient for pre theatre dining. The online line reservation system was very simple to use. The menu is not large, but does contain a variety of options, including vegetarian and gluten free alternatives. The food was excellent. The staff were variable, one waiter was very professional, quick not notice diners needs and signals for attention, the two waitresses, while OK, did seem very busy doing something, going back and forth through the restaurant passing the table a number of times without noticing that we wanted to catch their attention (without actually waving a arm about or calling out). This is only a very small point however, and with the excellence of the food and convenience of the location we had an enjoyable experience.

The last time we visited was over 18months ago for a pre theatre dinner and where extremely disappointed as average food and service, however 18months later they have really upped their game. Whilst the menu is limited, around 6 choices of starter and similar number of main courses, there is also a special of the evening. The risotto in breadcrumbs as a starter was really nice, however the special of venison with pasta was also really good. The staff are excellent really friendly and attentive however there aren't enough of them and they struggled to manage a full resturant, and drink re orders only happened when you caught their eye. This isn't their fault the resturant is just under staffed but the staff do the best they can to accomadate the customers, they are a credit to the bistro. It does get booked well in advance so either call or book online well in adavance.

Pre show booking made for 6pm, seated promptly and both ordered £17 Roast Duck daily special + bottle of indifferent Aussie Shiraz. 6.45 food served following complaint - reason for delay apparently popularity of the dish being promoted! In the event the duck proved tough, the mashed creamed potatoes exhibited lumps the size of sugar cubes and the shredded mange touts totally inedible. In fairness, and in acknowledgement of our subsequent complaint, we were accorded a price reduction and free desserts to be served in the interval as the curtain call had by this time been sounded. It appears the kitchen at this venue badly requires additional rehearsal .

We dined here, pre-theatre, twice in August: we like the convenience of eating at the theatre venue. In the past we have had cause for complaint, but The Scene has improved. The service on each of the two recent occasions was faultless: friendly and efficient. The options on offer in August didn't really suit our taste. The only meat on the main menu was belly pork: not our choice. A 'special' of delicious bangers and mash on each occasion pleased my partner. On one occasion I chose the 'marinated and grilled tofu Thai curry'. Although the flavours in the sauce were good, the tofu wasn't! It may have been marinated, but it certainly wasn't grilled. A big mistake in my view. As a result, this choice was disappointing for me. I did mention this to the waitress, who sympathised and kindly passed my message to the chef. The next time I had the red onion (or similar) tart, which was satisfactory. We were happy enough with the deserts. We do appreciate the opportunity to return to our table for coffee in the interval.

Dined there last night with my husband before watching The Pirates of Penzance. We had bought the Celebration Package and it really made for a special, hassle-free evening. The 3 course menu provided good variety. All of our choices were fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. Being able to go back to our table for the interval drinks - dessert if we had liked - was great.

Six of us , three brothers and their wives met up for our annual get together. Where better than the Malvern Winter Gardens which is where my wife and I met!! We had coffee/tea in the Scene bistro. An excellent start to our day and excellent coffee with friendly service. We then had a walk round the gardens and the office where our father worked. All in all splendid.

I really want to give this 3.5 as I feel that 3 is a bit mean but it doesn't justify 4. The food was good and as vegetarians we had a couple of dishes to choose from. The soup was excellent, the main courses were very good (especially the mushroom pithivier) but the pastry on the dessert was slightly chewy but accompanied by excellent ice-cream. The staff were very friendly and it wasn't their fault that it took 40 minutes from ordering for our main course to arrive. We were a little worried by this time that we wouldn't be able to fit in dessert but in the event we did; although we would have been able to postpone the dessert to the interval, had we known. The coffee (which we did have at the interval) wasn't brilliant - not hot enough, and not strong enough. I thought the prices were reasonable for the venue, and it is a lovely place to eat.

My first visit to The Scene Bistro and my impression was as follows:Service was excellent. Friendly professional & attentive.I thought that the menu was a little limited and there were so many ingredients mentioned for each dish. So I went for Moroccan Lamb with creamed mash (was the special) it was really lovely. I had the White chocolate panacota for desert which was also lovely. For our two meals, desert & two small glasses of lemonade and lime came to £44. I think that is a little pricey. It was really nice that we could return to our table for coffee at the interval!I would definately eat here again but Not as often as I'd like did to price. Thank you

Simple, convenient and a relaxing pre performance dinner. The best part is that you can return to your table in the interval for dessert and to finish your wine avoiding the crowds at the bar. It was a limited menu and the food was ok but the service, excellent. I feel it is overpriced but a really convenient way of dinner if you are going to the theatre.

Within the Malvern Theatres complex, a great place to bump into friends and the occasional Star. Useful for pre-theatre eating (although there are many other paces in Malvern). Open and quiet during the day - a good place to take toddlers as there's lots of space to run around in the theatre foyer. Adjacent to the good park with leisure walks and an excellent children's playpark.

We decided spur of the moment to have our dinner here as we were attending the performance in the main theatre. We were accommodated with ease by friendly helpful staff who made us welcome. The menu was interesting and the food delicious. We enjoyed bread and olives with our drinks while waiting for our mains and returned in the interval for our puddings. It really made the evening.

We have eaten at this 'bistro' several times when attending the theatre, with friends, in Malvern, largely because our friends do like the restaurant. However on our most recent visit, although we continue to rate the service highly, we found little choice on the menu and the food was totally uninspiring and overpriced. By the time we reached home we both felt ill and in fact were unwell for most of the following day.We are very unlikely to eat at 'the Scene Bistro' again.

I haven't been here for years, so thought we would make night of it before the ballet. We were very pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste of the food and the very friendly and prompt service from the staff. The menu is just right with enterprising and interesting bistro fare. Highly recommended! It would have been five star review if the carpet hadn't been held together with white carpet tape and a slight lack of atmosphere, as others have said.

I went here last month because it was my wife's birthday and we decided to visit the theatre. We had not booked but thought there may be a space in the theatre restaurant so we gave it a try.As we arrived thee we were informed that the place was full so we though about having a sandwich as an alternative. However, suddenly the manager came out and told us that there was a spare table because a previous booking had not arrived so we could have that one.We did not have time to have a three course meal but all decided to have the beef for mains. When the food arrived it was well presented and was properly cooked. After this we did not have time for desserts but staff told us that if we ordered something we could have it for the interval and it would be sitting at the table when we arrived. We decided to order ice cream and sure enough at the interval there were all there waiting for us.We settled the bill before going into the theatre and will three main courses, three ice creams and three drinks it came to about £60. This might be a little expensive for some but when you come to the theatre you expect to pay that little bit more.In summary, we were pleasantly surprised at the friendliness of the staff and when we visit the theatre again we may well book in advance next time.

We took our Granny for a late Christmas treat. We all had a mixture of starters, mains and puddings. If you like starters the Tacos looked good, all the mains were yummy. We were running late so had our desserts and coffee/teas at the interval. This was a good move. Lemon posset to die for! My daughter has a gluten problem and the menu was good and said if a particular dish was gluten free or vegetarian.Staff all very friendly and helpful. Lovely to be able to eat if you are visiting the theatre or cinema.

Stopped for lunch here and had a leek and potato soup - rather small bowl and the soup wasn't great. Can't say I would come here especially, but might be convenient for the theatre.

I booked a "celebration package" for my wife's birthday, as she wanted to see Christmas Carol, (which I also extended to an overnight stay at The Abbey). This includes a 3-course meal in the bistro, amongst other goodies. There were 4 or 5 choices for each course, and the food was very nice, and freshly cooked. Staff were friendly and efficient, and the bistro is quite spacious and very clean. Perhaps lacking a little ambience, but at least that preserves privacy. I can't comment on the price of the meal, but I felt that the whole package was very good value for money.

Food is great. You must try the lemon posset with shortcake biscuit - out of this world. You can go to the theatre or cinema in this fantastic facility. Bistro will make snack available for intervals, or you can eat before or after performances

We called in for a quick lunch on a quiet week-day and were not disappointed! Service was good, soup and bread were fine and the cost was reasonable. The Theatre is a huge asset to Malvern, and the Scene Bistro makes it a worthwhile visit, even if you are not attending the theatre or the cinema. The Bistro was quiet while we were there; a couple of people having a business meeting, plus some small groups socialising over lunch. The Bistro provides a ready supply of free, fresh water (I know - to be expected in a Spa town!) but it is a nice touch! Overall I feel that the Theatre would benefit from having a more 'community theatre' feel, and perhaps that is already being planned. Will definitely re-visit soon.

Booked a table before watching the full monty. Ordered the sea bass which was lovely, but didn't have sufficient time to order the dessert menu - so make sure you order that along with your main course. Ordered mid show glass of wine and this was found on my table - so really nice to avoid the crowded bar area. Really nice staff - will definitely go again.

We had dinner here one evening in October while staying in the town, while attending a performance of "Before the party" with Tom Conti. The bistro doesn't look much: institutional if anything, and we were both surprised by the quality and taste of the food. The waiting staff are young and enthusiastic, and the atmosphere and ambience unexpectedly pleasant.

Our third visit to The Scene. The staff are very friendly but generally lack professionalism at waiting table. The food is tasty but more pub than bistro with smaller portions. The venue is convenient for the theatre, well presented, fare value but lacks atmosphere. Bad Jews had an excellent cast and was most enjoyable ... overall a good night at Malvern Theatre.

After having a lovely roast at the kings head we sat in their garden having a drink. Really unprofessionally the manager came over from the star inn and asked us to join them because ‘the drinks are cheaper’ Maybe but the live music is awful and your pub is empty - we now know why. So rude. Really unprofessional and an awful attitude to have towards another local business Absolutely no business coming from our large group who would have happily spent money behind the bar.

Came for a family Sunday roast. The beef was to die for, as was the rest! Staff really friendly, all in all a lovely chilled atmosphere and I would absolutely visit again!
