Looked on line for a carvery and found some good reviews for the Saxon. It turned out to be a very dissapointing visit. When we entered the car park it looked rather neglected. Entering the pub and things looked slightly better and we were served at the bar quite quickly. The restaurant was empty, the tables whilst clean were completely empty . There was also nothing on the walls so the room felt very stark and empty. The food was on one heated trolley and the meats were pre carved in dishes which wasn't a good sign as I always thought a carvery was where you carved the meat to serve it. We were served fairly promptly but som of the food was not yet on the trolley. On taking the plate I noticed it was very cold, when we got sat down we found the broccole was nearly cold and because the plates were cold, the food soon became cool. The rest of the food was cooked pretty well but nothing to praise up. We won't be visiting again.

My partner and I decided that we would try the Sunday carvery at this venue and I must admit how lovely it was and all of the food was fresh and delicious and hot and we both thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend this pub to visit and enjoy a friendly atmosphere and lovely meal the staff were fantastic and very polite and welcoming and the chef was amazing as well and was there ready and waiting to serve you and explain what the vegetables were and also which meats were on the menu and also homemade Yorkshire puddings as well you could have as much vegetables as you wanted and also had a choice of what meats you could have

wow, where do I start? id never been before but so glad my mate Barry suggested it. I had the best time I've had at a pub for probably 15 years and I don't even drink. everyone enjoyed themselves and I didn't know anyone there apart from my mate Barry before that day. I cant give it enough credit.

The pub was untidy and outside parking was atrocious due to some person who was selling second hand cars and also he looked like a Ruby tramp and also very dirty looking and the owner of the pub or if its the manager was smoking behind the bar. A place I would never go to again

On a family trip home after a week away in Skegness and our car broke down, just around the corner from The Saxon. We just went inside to use the toilets and explained our situation. The landlord and lady were extremely helpful and offered us both a drink and our 2 and 4 year old some squash. After about two hours of waiting for breakdown recovery, they pulled out some children’s games and began playing with them and keeping them happy while I sat on the phone trying to organise a lift. It got to about five pm and still no sign of any tow truck, so they offered our children some chicken nuggets and chips, making sure they were fed and happy as we still had at least an hour journey home. Paul and Mandy were so helpful and accommodating. Next time we are around Thetford, will definitely pop in to try the carvery! Thank you again!

We went to the Saxon for the Wednesday Night Carvery & we were very impressed. Welcoming hosts, lovely atmosphere & great food. In fact the best carvery we have had in a long time & you also get a dessert included (I had the home-made rice pudding which was delicious) Drinks are reasonably priced also. Highly recommend a visit to this lovely village pub.

I have been here in the past and thought it good until this visit. I thought I had found my new local but how mistaken I was. I am disabled and I would like to let you know how I have just been treated. I went to the Saxon and had a drink with friends. One friend left taking my car keys with him by accident. I was unable to get the person back quickly. I did not have my medication with me so I had to arrange for someone to get me home. I told at least two staff members what had happened and I would return later when I had my keys back. I returned a couple of hours later to find my disability car blocked in and a rude note on it. The landlord showed his true colours by stating he would not move his car which was blocking mine in until the following morning. He did move his car to let me out but one thing for certain if you are a disabled person avoid this place as if you have a problem and need help you just get abuse from the landlord who appears to be ignorant in his manner at least in my opinion. I do not expect to be treated so rudely because of a disability. Yes I can be touchy but he should spent a day in my shoes and just maybe he would be nicer.

Arrived at this pub on Friday night in our motorhome and received the friendliest welcome we have ever had at any of our numerous stops.Mandy and Paul greeted us like long lost friends and in next to no time we were made to feel like part of the family. The food is superb. My partner had the Chimichanga wth chicken, rice, beans, chilli and side salad. I had the supposedly ‘quarter of a chicken’ which was definitely a half and a rack of baby ribs with curly fries. All cooked to perfection. Spent a lovely couple of hours after dinner with a few pints and really good conversation before retiring for a really peaceful nights sleep. I asked Mandy what time breakfast was and she informed me that they had stopped doing breakfast to the public a while back but if we wanted to join them for breakfast with her and Paul then we would be most welcome and we were told to make ourselves at home. This is a real hidden gem and I am amazed to find so few reviews of of it on here. Highly recommended for the friendly welcome, food, banter and general all round atmosphere.

We showed up on a Friday evening and they feature Mexican (!) food on Friday and Saturdays. There were also some standard, non-Mexican items. The cook came out and asked us how we wanted our Chimichangas (Tex-Mex, fare of course, but I doubt the Brits make much distinction as between Mex & Tex-Mex) prepared and had them out to us in short order. Not the best Chimichanga I have ever had, but we both enjoyed our food. The owners, Paul and Mandy, were the nicest and most pleasant people we have met thus far in England. It wasn't particularly busy that evening, and Mandy and Paul both spent a lot of time speaking with us, making sure we were well-taken care of, etc. A patron noticed by camera bag and then came by and spent about an hour with me discussing photography, and showing me his work. (He was very talented and going into the R.A.F. as a photographer.) Paul and Mandy sat next to us as they ate their own dinner, and shared many stories with us. Mandy asked me if I would like to go behind the bar and "pull a beer" (under her strict supervision and physical presence) for one of her patrons, and I was glad to comply. It's been 30 years since I tended bar, and I never imagined I would be behind a bar in England. It is an unusually clean establishment for Great Britain. They had a fire in the fireplace, and we had a wonderful and most unexpected evening.

We arrived in two motor homes, so we parked at the back of the pub, where the owners Mandy and Paul warmly welcomed us (a party of four). There was a good choice of beers and ciders and hosts were great company, fielding questions and taking a real interest in where we had come from and where we were going. We had food in the evening which was Mexican, and was delicious. We had three different dishes between us and all were cooked very well and and tasted great. We moved on the next day but would stay again as a really great visit.

I have visited the Saxon several times, and never had a negative experience. The carvery is lovely, homecooked meets pup grub. The staff are the highlight, Mandy and Paul really make you feel welcome, and any locals I have encountered were just as friendly. A lovely place to visit, in a very comfortable setting.

We had heard that The Saxon have a Carvery of a Sunday and also a jam session for musicians. The Carvery was good, well cooked tasty food with a choice of beef, pork and Turkey. Plenty of vegetables and roast and/or boiled potatoes. We were a party of three and we had bread and butter pudding, and apple crumble for dessert. Again, good well cooked and ample portions. The jam musicians consisted of electric as well as bass guitarists, a fiddle player and several singers. Good standard. A very enjoyable afternoon. We were welcomed at the pub, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. We will return.....

This is not the first time i have been to the Saxon, but it was the first since i moved away from the area so when we were visiting friends when they asked where we would like to eat i didnt hesitate THE SAXON @ Weeting. As you walk in through the door you are greeted by Paul and Mandy as if you are a friend (we are now) they create very relaxed atmosphere , the restaurant is half of the pub layout but this doesnt affect the atmoshere only adds to it, there is a great selection on the menu but we went on a Sunday for the carvery( see title) it is buffet style with chef cutting your selection 1 of 4 or should you want to 4 of 4 meats i chose the latter as they all looked very appetising pork, beef, gammon and turkey (im drooling as i write this) then help yourself to great selection of fresh veg, if you still feel like more there is a great selection of sweets, i recommend the dime bar cake mmmmmm. This is my first review as i chose to write it as i couldnt believe that THE SAXON@WEETING has not been mentioned before and it deserves it, if you find youself looking for somewhere to eat i wouldnt hesitate in recommending THE SAXON i guarantee you will not be dissapointed

Met with a friend for lunch. Lovely venue, lovely food (but rather pricey!) When we came to pay,the owner was rather abrupt! Perhaps we overstayed our welcome?! 🙃

Stopped here today after finding this on Tripadvisor. We were warmly welcomed and given the option of sitting in the bar or upstairs (very steep stairs) for waitress service. We chose the Ploughman's Lunch, where you have the options of choosing 2 options from: cheddar, Stilton, brie, prawns, beef or piri piri chicken. The plates were full of colourful & tasty food; the beef was plentiful and tender. It took us ages to get through and unfortunately didn't have room gir a dessert. Another customer couldn't manage her lunch, and she was offered the option of having it packaged up and taking it home. We will be back next time we are in the area to try something else off the menu!
