Lovely Sunday roast friendly staff even when didn't have preferred options soon rectified will definitely be back such great value for money

We came for a mother's day lunch and weren't disappointed. The roast was delicious and really well priced. The manager was friendly and very attentive given how busy it was! There's a play area outside that looks really good however it wasn't the weather for it today so will have to come back! We were a little put off due to negative reviews however it has recently been taken over and seems to be thriving! It's really family friendly including dogs which is lovely. Will definitely return, thank you

Visited on the off chance as a walking in on a Sunday lunchtime. We were lucky as we were early as it’s obviously popular with lots of tables already booked for later in the day. We all had the standard roast dinners (one gammon, two chicken, and a lamb). They were excellent and fantastic value in their two for £22 offer! The food quality was excellent and the portion size was huge!! Plus they don’t scrimp on the gravy. It was one of those Sunday lunches that for the rest of the week we kept mentioning because it was so good. Staff were really friendly too. Would definitely recommend!!

All had two three drinks which was find had food everyone was fine other then a mix grill ask for medium came out blue sent it back can out Rare sent back came out medium well and the server on the bar served locals first even know there was a couple people at the till

Could not fault food or service, had festive meal, started with pate, Turkey and apple pie and custard, exceptional value

Went for my sons birthday… 2 of us had the gammon which was tough and Luke warm . The pineapple was cold and in my opinion it was taken from the tin and put on the plate , warm soggy chips . The deserts are advertised as home made , this is debatable…. The custard was sent back to be reheated , 2 of us left there hungry. Overall a very disappointing meal .

Went for a birthday meal we booked for 15 we all sat together staff lovely food more or less come at the same time i had chicken with noodles bit disappointed when it arrived tasty but looked like it been thrown together wish i had the fish and chips toilets spotless but smelt of a dirty mop as floor just been done

First time visiting this pub for lunch with my Mum (it’s actually not in Birkenhead, but near to Moreton, Wirral).Had a really tasty lunch of fish & chips and mushy peas; the batter being crispy and light and the fish being a large, fresh piece. Also had Hunters Chicken from the Specials Menu, which was succulent and tasted lovely with chunky chips.The desserts of caramelised apple pie and an apple crumble where also extremely nice, and appeared home-made. Plenty of fruit too.The staff where attentive and we where served in a reasonable time. The atmosphere was friendly and we enjoyed the ambience. Thank you.We didn’t go outside, but on a warmer day the large garden at the back looks very inviting and there appears to be lots of equipment for children.We will definitely be visiting again, probably on a Wednesday or Sunday when I see you have a carvery!

Waited ages for our meals. Ordered a mushroom stroganoff. Sent it back with a hair/piece of thread in it - the waiter was quite stroppy about it. Second one came and it had an inch long piece of wood in it…like the end of the wooden stirrer you get at a coffee shop. Apparently, it wasn’t a piece of wood but the stem of the mushroom that the chef forgot to cut off…? Well if the stem of a mushroom is like a rigid wooden stirrer, they need to be more careful! Nobody was overly bothered by the fact that my meals were unacceptable. Not really any apology nor discount and most definitely wouldn’t be eating there again!

I've been here a few times recently with the family and can never fault the food. There's a lovey atmosphere and great for the family especially with the outdoor tv showing the euros.However on most occasions recently the service from staff has been poor. Understandably it is mega busy on a Sunday, but we got shown in and told to " wait here a second" but the same server then walked off, seated another table and ignored us. We had to ask what was going on with our table as we presumed he was coming back. He then completely denied all knowledge of us and forgot he'd told us to stand and waitThankfully one of the regular staff sorted us out, turned out we were waiting for another group to move off our table.We were then sat for 50 mins before we then grabbed staff walking past to ask to order drinks and food.Another 40 mins later we were waiting to be told we could go up to get our carvery. We had to ask again, to be told we have to wait. Although the serving area had been dead for 20 mins.Knives and forks? Had to askMore drinks? AskDessert? Ask. Oh but don't expect any cream or ice cream you're meant to get with it. Don't expect to be asked how your meal was. Ordered drinks. They were sat on bar for ages on end. I asked if i could just take them. No - not allowed, covid. You'll have to wait for someone to bring them over. Fair enough but could we get to drink them in the next hour. It was basically pin down any staff member who was busy looking busy but not actually doing much to get served.If they had dedicated servers for set areas it would have been much more organised but, it just seemed to be alot of young staff not knowing what to do. And 2 more experienced staff trying to keep the place running by doing everything themselves It's a mega shame because its a lovely pub, but lately the staffing has been shocking

I've been visiting the Saughall pub for many years with quite a few different owners. Apart from one short period it's always been a great pub to visit. However the food from the present chef is really good and so reasonably priced. They also have a great extended out door area too.

It's nice to go somewhere that is not a "chain". The garden is lovely, so are the staff. Nothing is too much trouble. Always go back there. Dog friendly too.

My fathers wake was held in the garden of the Saughall pub for family and friends the staff were very friendly food and service excellent the Manager Jude what ever we needed she sorted it nothing was to much trouble for her she went the extra mile yesterday as she did when we were booking so ten out of ten to Jude and her staff a big thank you

Excellent food, friendly staff but the last twice there has been a wait of almost an hour for food. The first time was waiting for a kids nuggets and chips before the adults went up for carvery (pre covid)and then yesterday waited an hour again. This was because they were restocking the carvery, but an hour?! Chef very apologetic and gave our (by now very hangry) 6 year old an extra Yorkshire pudding to make up for it! We had ordered our puddings at the same time as our main carvery. When it got to time for pudding we were told they didnt have the apple pie! Surely they knew how many covers they had and how many portions of apple pie left?! We asked for the bill and our daughter's dessert to take away. We were then given an alternative toffee apple pie to take away. No reduction on price was offered and the attitude seemed to be well that's just the way it is.Really disappointing as the food is OUTSTANDING but definitely not ideal when taking a child. We would go back but probably book for early afternoon in the hopes of eating by tea time.

Had a family meal for my Husbands birthday, Absolutely faultless, The chef takes a pride in his/her cooking and presentation. Serve was very efficient and friendly.It was so good we have been back for carvery. Totally brilliant, I will not have to cook a roast again.Just make sure you book.

Great service, full plate of food from the carvery chef, Ray.Lots of car parking, children’s play area outside.There was no available room in dining area today but I was offered a place in the bar area.I Ordered potato and leak soup and a carvery with a large coke for £12.00Soup arrived piping hot and was lovely. Could have done with a knife to spread the butter but made so with the spoon.Carvery included pork, beef and gammon for me. I did hear the carver offer a customer chicken breast since they had no turkey. There was a lot of veg to choose from but I preferred just potatoes and gravy. I think the roasties are covered with rosemary and thyme, which was really nice.Vegetarian or meat gravy was available too.The food was very good and the atmosphere in the pub area was lovely. Lots of customers knew the staff well which was nice to see. An elderly couple also had a well-behaved dog on a lead in the bar too. Overall this was a great pub for food and thoroughly enjoyed my time here.Things to improve (but don’t diminish the experience):1. WiFi if there’s a few people in the group2. Bring out cutlery for the meals in the bar area

We were a party of 8. Staff extremely Helpful and attentive. Food was nicely served. Three of us ordered fish & chips, unfortunately the batter was soggy. The fish was very tasty though.

Lots of choice on the menu. Staff very pleasant and food arrived piping hot and in good time. Food was nice with good portion size. Prices were very reasonable.

Fabulous food,chilli bowl starter was yummy. The cavery was delicious, good choice of meat and veg and the homemade gravy was so tasty. Grest value for money. Would definitely recommend.

After several recommendations we went for dinner. Excellent choice on the menu and some great offers. Food was well cooked, tasted great and was quick to arrive. Will definitely be recommending and going back very soon. Staff are great and service was really good.

We had a starter and main both lovely. There is a little play frame outside. Nice pub. We all had a great time.

38 of us spent last night here. Family reunion staff were amazing. Food was delicious. Jude the manager set up a reserved spot in restaurant. The family all enjoyed the food and would recommend anyone who wants to have a good meal and a nice cosy pub to enjoy to visit. Thank you we will be returning might be more then 38 next time. But we were no trouble .

Came in today with my family. Thoroughly enjoyed the food. There was plenty of choice. Food was hot and delicious.. I've been here a few times all the staff are very friendly and great to chat to must say I did miss the regular sunday chef hes always smiling and good for a laugh.. would reccomend this pub to anyone and will continue to visit in the future.

We visited here for our tea and we weren’t disappointed! The most delicious lasagne I’ve tasted. Fresh salad and amazing chips. Not to mention the sticky toffee pudding I had. And all for £6.15. Don’t let the price out you off, should be charging more for the tea we had. We will be visiting a lot more. Thank you Saughall and your team

Well. Got here at 7:55pm. No staff to be found. Found them. Asked if they were still serving food. Lady went to ask the chef who was already shaking his head as he walked away. “Sorry we don’t serve after 8pm.” It was before 8 when we walked in. Would be better if they had said “to be honest we can’t be bothered”

I have just visited the Saughall for a family carvery and I have to say it was amazing value for the money. Great choice of both meat (which was soooo tender) and veg and also catered for food allergies ie gluten free. The staff were extremely polite and helpful including the chef who was serving the carvery -( I think his name was Ben) who was very patient and chatty with our 3 year old. Would definately recommend and will be back very soon.

Gorgeous food, everything was nice and hot! Ben was serving the carvery and he was a pleasent chatty guy, service was good from the waitresses too! Will be going back very soon!

Went back after previously visiting in the summer and discovered it was carvery Wednesday. Food was excellent and the meat melted in the mouth. Plenty of choice of fresh cooked vegetables and the staff could not be moe attentive. Had no room for pudding so staff put the tea and coffee we had had as part of the meal deal, a nice gesture. Will return soon to work our way through the menu as it looks great value for money.

Not a clean or friendly environment. The food was cold and chewy. Poor service, no smiles or greetings. Poor overall management.

Should have realised when we saw the prices on the menu that this place wouldn’t be up to much, we were not wrong. Vegetables all mushy flavourless and looked like they’d been boiled a not a mush yesterday. Meat and fish wasn’t much better. The attitude of the staff and service were even poorer. One to avoid I’m afraid.

Delicious meal and fantastic service, we will definitely visit again. Only let down was that it was a bit cold in the pub and the wood floor was sticky.

Terrible food. Not very hot. Slow service. Miserable staff. Called in as we were passing but wouldn't recommend. There are nicer pubs a few miles away.

This pub thinks it’s acceptable to have a firework display right next to livestock on a farm! The live footage of the poor horses terrified is so upsetting! This place has no respect what so ever and is only bothered about profit! Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 it is illegal to set off fireworks next to livestock so they have broken the law! They have done nothing to apologise and a cleaner that works there has been laughing at all the footage of terrified animals! I will make sure all my friends and family never step foot in this pub ever again!

I visited in the summer for lunch with friends. Food not great but cheap so what can you expect. Service very friendly, however I will never visit or recommend this pub after their total lack of compassion by going ahead with their bonfire night loud fireworks display even though they are situated next door to a large stable yard. Not only a fire hazard but no regard for the distress they caused to the animals. Yard owners tried to reason with them but no joy. Shame on you!

Went again this sunday for breakfast there was ten of us Once again the staff did themselves very proud there service and politness was 100percent The Pub was spotless.As for the breakfast Ray was serving the food He is so amazing runs around making sure every bit of food is fresh piping hot.The Breakfast was delocious The price was far too cheap for the lovely food we ate Well done to all the staff expcially Ray Thankyou so very much will be returning for our tea tomorrow the Dempseys

A groupd of 8 of us went for a Sunday carvery. The food was excellent and Ray the chef was very friendly and entertaining. Good beer as well!

Went here with 5 ex work colleagues for lunch. We all enjoyed our lunch and waitresses looked after us well. For myself being a diabetic, I had to drink water with my meal as I get tired of being offered diet coke which I detest! There are so many sugar free drinks available so why dont these restaurants stock them? If I took my young children to a restaurant I would ask for them on their behalf. Sprite, 7 Up, Orangina and diet lemonade are but a few! I will continue to lower the stars for reviews of restaurants that we visit who cannot offer me any sugar free drinks other than diet coke.

Food good for the price and extremely friendly staff. There is also a dog friendly area to sit in within the restaurant. Will return.

We booked a table for 5pm on a Sunday afternoon. It was extremely busy as soon as we arrived (understandably with it being a carvery pub). We were sat near the carvery hot plate and were the ONLY table situated in the area, so we had hungry customers peering over our shoulders at our dinners and eavesdropping in the conversation. One point an elderly lady asked what number our table was, to make sure she didn't book that table for next time because of where we were sat! We ordered our food, 3 were vegetarian meals (or so we thought). The menu deal is great, 2 courses for 8.95 or 3 courses for 11.95, however they offered 2 vegetarian options and 1 of which was a veggie lasagne. When the meals arrived we digged in, much to our horror to taste meat in the lasagne! What's strange was there was only 1 lasagne choice on the menu which was the Mediterranean Veggie Lasagne! Due to the lack of staff, the chef at the hot plate noticed our faces of disgust and he took it away and a refund was given. We explained to the waitress about the fact that a veggie lasagne is the ONLY lasagne on the menu and didn't understand why we were given meat lasagne when it's not actually on the menu. She gave us a passive confused look, took our plates and walked off. They also forgot we had ordered desserts and after waiting 45minutes, we decided to ask. Overall, nice enough food for the price but the amount of staff was poor and lack of customer service really let it down. Also the menu clearly needs updating with the emphasis on either a meat or vegetarian lasagne!!!

Have been to the shippons in irby heard this was run by same owner as nearer i booked a table and again did not dissapoint ....we had the braised steak done to perfection and ice cream to follow .lovely staff we arrived early but shown to our table .and enjoyed are time ...will call by again soon ..believe us well worth the visit and prices are great ..thanks ..

Been going here for years now and this pub mever fails to impress me. Always welcoming and the staff are very attentive.l love the fact that it is dog friendly because i can bring my dog with me so she is not alone. Overall The pub has a very nice and comfortable atmosphere and i will continue to go and enjoy myself with my family and friends!

Absolutely disgusted to say the least!! Our experience here started off great, we had a nice meal and our 2 year old little boy loved the garden, especially the bouncy castle.

First time here best carvery have had staff amazing price really cheap under £15 for 3 course meal and drink good for people on a budget defiantly recommend defiantly go again

I was first introduced to this pub by a friend and I have been here several times since and every time it has been amazing the staff are so friendly from booking on the telephone to arriving and shown to the table

Since Jude took over and hired fabulous chefs I can honestly say this is a real value for money pub. £5.95 for 2 courses is unbelievable. It's home cooked ( not a ding in sight!) The soups are really nice. The Sunday carvery is sooo good. How they maintain the standard for the ££££ is beyond me. Btw, the apple crumble is to die for. No complaints at all and I'm a fussy so and so.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon to celebrate my daughters 12th birthday! Nothing was too much trouble for the management and staff who accommodated a table of 10, with children's mains available at the same time as adult starters due to a very hungry baby! Similarly the staff kept a close eye and offered children's puddings during adult meals.... Made a difference as it was all very seamless and resulted in less stress for me and children were well fed and happy!

Very friendly, food was very good, Ian the supervisor was very friendly and kind. Would highly recommend.

Visited twice this weekend as stayed in holiday cottages around the corner. Such a lovely pub, excellent value for money, yummy piping hot food from a very good menu and the most friendliest staff! 8 of us and we all enjoyed! Massive well done 👍👍

Meal really good value for money but just waited far too long, I think they forgot about us as I had reserved the table for the 4 of us, we gave are orders and after waiting for almost an hour we got our meal and that was only after I asked how long it would be? there seemed enough staff and wasn't particularly busy for a Friday lunch time. Would go again as it was really nice food, I had the fish and chips but if we have to wait an hour again I'm afraid it would be the last time, which would be a shame

Never again food was totally dreadful. The service was fantastic tho but what do you expect for the price, will never visit again.

We visited here for a Sunday lunch after looking at Trip Advisor for good reviews of local pubs that offer roast dinners. So glad we did. It was a lovely meal at a really good price and table service. I honestly couldn’t have made a nicer roast dinner at home! It was a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff. It was busy which of course is a good sign. We telephoned and booked in advance. Parking is good and there’s a small outside play area for children.

Went at suggestion of aged parent. My expectations plummeted when I saw the menu comprised entirely of 2 courses for £5.95. I was inclined to leave then, but the staff were good and the Wainwright well kept.

We come here every week for our Sunday Lunch and love it. Its £8.95 for two courses and the carvery always has lots of choice. The plates and food are always red hot and the regular chef is brilliant, really chatty and friendly...our daughter has become besties with him. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere in the pub is very warm and cosy. Can’t ask for more on a nice chilled out Sunday.

Came here to chat about booking an event and ended up having a carvery. Omg where to start! Between two fussy eaters (me and the Mrs) we have polished our plates! Everything is evidently fresh and homemade and the staff are a delight. Service with a smile! Our starters and desserts were superb as well. Can't fault, perfect establishment, definitely would (and have) recommend!!

We come to the Saughall most Sundays for their carvery we are always impressed with the food and find it good value for money. Staff are lovely and we would recommend to anyone.

We visit the Saughall quite regularly with various grandchildren and always have a great meal. Two courses for £8.95 or three for £10.95 --£4.95 for children and they get the same menu and generous helpings. There's a choice of six starters and six desserts, eight mains and a splendid carvery twice a week . We had the carvery today; I chose the vegetarian nut roast ( and there is a superb veggie gravy option--wish I had that recipe!). There is a choice of three roast meats and both my husband and grandson chose the succulent turkey, although you can mix the meats too. You are served with great roasties (my grandson had six large ones), honey roast parsnips, mash and Yorkshire puddings. Then it's up to you what to add : stuffing, perfectly cooked sprouts, creamed cauliflower, cabbage. carrots and turnips, green beans, mushy peas, roast beetroots--always a huge choice, perfectly prepared. Plates are always hot.

We live in Liverpool but our son lives on the Wirral, he told us that he’d found a real nice carvery. He booked a table for 4 of us and let them know we had a wheelchair user with us. We managed to squeeze in with the wheelchair but it was a bit of a nightmare getting back out, people having to stand up and move their chairs so we could fit past. Couldn’t fault the food, it was nice and plentiful. Will definitely be going again

If I could give it less than a 1 rating I would. After been out all day wanted to pop in to the local ( only just moved into the area) we quickly ordered a starter and a main each for less than £6 which we thought was great!! How we were wrong!!!

Normal pub but really good food at extraordinary value. Buy a sweet or a starter for £9.95 and the main course is free!

Went for Sunday lunch with friends and the carvery was delicious, so much choice too! Highly recommended, but you’ll need to book as it was very busy when we went.

Saughall Massie is a tiny village with a cluster of houses, one with a splendid thatched roof. It is on the way to nowhere, so you would never just pass the Saughall Pub.

The Carvery here is first class. Meat tasty, vegetables cooked and not dried out or watery like some other Carvery restaurants. It was a Sunday lunchtime and was busy but we’d booked a table so if you want to visit, be sure to book first. Only downside was we ordered desserts and waited over 40 minutes for them and had to ask two members of staff to bring them to our table. Then we had to wait a few minutes to pay the bill whilst bar staff were serving drinks. Otherwise excellent. Busy because it’s so good .

was not impressed the time before i dined there,but took a party of 10 for sunday lunch in september after my grand-daughters baptism and found carvery very good value and reasonably priced

Just popped in for a meal and had an amazing carvery... Fresh veg meat that just fell apart when you cut into it... Brilliant staff couldn't do enough for you... Highly recommend will deffo coming back...

Lovely meal had carvery beautiful tender meat cut thick had beef turkey and ham lots of veg creamy mash and roasties. Friendly staff definately come again.

I came here for a birthday meal with some family and I brought my dog along! We came on a Wednesday for the carvery and apart from the dry meat and chunky slices they did really well to cater for us! I can’t stop thinking about the starter potato skins they are absolutely delicious! They allowed us to bring the dog to the laminated area near the fire exit as it was very cold outside and windy. The staff are very polite and the young lady on the bar was very polite definitely deserves a pay rise! I don’t have a bad word to say about this place. With me living 2 Minutes away it’s always nice to pop down and have a bite to eat! Would definitely recommend :)

well I visted this pub with all my family, the food was so good and the staff where amazing, kind and so helpful, and where willing to swap things as my children are fussy, so everyone was happy, looking forward to going again with my family, thank you to all the staff x

I come here often with friends bring our kids. Recently camr on a monday as kids eat free. My one year old going through stage that wont let me feed her. She made a bit of a mess with peas. I repeatedly apologised and even offered to clean it up. The supervisor ignored me every time. As i came to pay bill he rudely shouted over a member of staff pointed saying clean that mess up. Again i apologised and again blanked. I was so upset she a baby. Well to make things worse a friend there that nigjt went back week later with her family. He came over to table and asked hee not to make mess had week before. How rude. She aaked to speak to manager he said she was busy and to email. I contacted them through facebook. Read and still waiting reply. I come here weekly not just mondays and have been made to feel that bad i dont want to come back. He also twice tried to charge her for meals that wernt on her bill. Sad

Food, bearing in mind the low price was probably good but spoiled by poor presentation, almost slung on to plates. Staff were friendly and helpful. The whole place is shabby.

Haven’t been here for years. Food was ok, good prices. Only real down side is the waiting time for food, we did order starters and mains but from ordering at 5:40pm we received our starters at about 6:10pm and then our mains at about 7:35pm. Would probably try again but not of an evening.

Wednesday is the day to go here. You can get a starter and a carvery for a very good price. The carvery is excellent and we have always been looked after very well here.

Went there yesterday staff where to busy gabbing behind the bar to notice we needed serving. Food was nice but was put off by the lady who I presume was the owner or manager swaning about snaking her vape won’t be going back again

Had a brilliant time with friends ... the staff her are lovely and very friendly. The food delicious ... highly recommend the beetroot and feta starter, the wild mushroom pie is stunning as is the crumble for dessert. As it was a Thursday we stayed to take part in the quiz which was a great laugh .... superb evening HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Visited here tonight. The food was tasty and very reasonably priced. Have a starter or a sweet and get your main course free! Someone also told me, whilst I was there,that on a Monday children eat free but I didn't confirm this with any member of staff.

Yet another lovely meal here tonight. 10 of us in for a birthday celebration. Great food, great service and a good selection of beers.

Cannot praise this place enough. Friendly and efficient staff and a roast lamb carvery that far exceeded all expectations. Would highly recommend and will definitely be coming back

We have been regular visitors for a while now. On every visit the food is amazing for the price. The staff are lovely and welcoming they can't do enough for you and what can I say we will continue to eat there

Visited on a Monday early evening, 2 adults & 2 kids. Climbing frame in garden enjoyed by kids, however it is in need of repair. large hole in the matting around the frame that my 3 yr old got his foot stuck in, also a part at the end of the slide where its all ripped up and is a serious trip hazard.

We are a group of friends who like to meet every so often when it is a birthday or just to keep in touch. We have been to the Saughall Pub for the last three times and we all think it's really great. Tonight was no exception as we all enjoyed our meals, agreeing that the value was really good, portions very ample and desserts delicious. As it was warm today I opted for the sorbet which was perfect.
