The Sandford in Purbeck

We were booked ( a very large family and friends group. Last year,We booked a variety of lodges, caravans and camping. This would have been for the last weekend of September 24. Today , we all got emails cancelling our bookings. Reason given : a Solitice event!!!! What appalling customer service. Offered vouchers for monies paid. Never will consider visiting a ParkDean resort .

We had a great weekend here. The highlighted for our toddler was the arts and crafts. He loved painting a dinosaur in the pottery painting, as well as fun making a bear with Hayley and Chloe Highly recommended

Excellent find! Sunday evening meal for family. Pub is well presented, clean and welcoming. Food choice was good and service was very good, and goof value for money. Food came to table very quickly and portions were very generous. Good quality food at a good price!!

We used the private function room and garden for Buffet food and drinks following a funeral. We had about 40 there but the room could comfortably take more and lots of outside space. Great venue for families as the children had space to run around outside. Very good food and service, so recommended.

The staff at the sandford pub were friendly and very helpful my wife is a fussy eater and they bent over backwards for her needs and the food was outstanding can’t fault the sandford keep it up guys thank you

We held a private party in the Marquee at The Sandford with exclusive use of the garden. We chose a buffet supper and the food was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble for either the owner/chef nor any of the staff.

Fantastic food.....burgers, steaks, etc and one of the best roasts I've ever had. Would thoroughly recommend

Great food and venue with lovey and efficient staff. Amazing place to go for an evening meal with family or friends, and also cater for larger scale events. Would reccomend.

Overall disappointing. We booked on an evening when online they advertised a carvery, however there was none on arrival, so best to call ahead and check. The menu is very limited 6/7 choices per course. The children's menu is very limited, and in fact when we were there one of the items wasn't available so further limited the choices. Also the children's meals are overpriced. £3 for a starter, £5.50 for a main, £3 for a dessert, drink to be paid for separately so £12.75 for a full child's meal. There were 2 adults and 2 children in our party. Kids had all 3 courses and a lemonade, we had a main course each and soda water each, total £65. Positives, the portion sizes were good, I had a vegetarian pizza which was good. The young ladies serving were helpful and friendly. I wouldn't return.

We had two fantastic meals here while on our holiday. Staff were welcoming food was amazing on both visits and very good value. A great find and lovely atmosphere. Would recommend highly.

The Landlord and staff could not be more welcoming or accommodating. Great pub, great food and lovely accommodation. Live music over the weekend which was also brilliant. Stayed over in one of their pods which was beautiful and very comfortable. Can’t thank them enough for a great weekend.

We found this place by accident but weren’t disappointed at all, fabulous food and staff so lovely!! Lots of choice i.e. carvery at a very reasonable price or regular menu!

There were 25 of us, a struggle to serve I am sure! However, the carvery looked ropey when we arrived and after a 40minute wait, it was cold. The cauliflower cheese, carrots, parsnips and corgettes were undercooked. The cheese sauce watery and the peas raw. The rest of the veggies on the carvery were cooked but cold.

Had a fantastic lunch from the carvery, prices excellent, staff better than excellent and the food WOW. People, you've got to check this place out, really brilliant. The owner/landlord customer service second to none. We live behind Silent Woman Pub and we have to say the Sandford pub is now our local and that's saying something.

The Sandford is a pleasant place for lunch - not busy on a weekday. Good value menu of 2 mains for £15 meant that we could afford a starter and desert. Service was rather slow, but pleasantly relaxing.

Just visited the Sandford for a Christmas Lunch. Very impressed with the quality of food and received excellent service. Haven't been here for a little while, but will definitely be returning soon. The restaurant is clean and tidy and tables well spread out, so not on top of each other. 5 stats from me.

I visited today for a works Christmas lunch. We chose The Sandford as the menu was the best in the area, interesting dishes, lots of choice for dietary needs etc and amazing prices. We didn't expect the excellent quality of food we received all dishes looked and tasted amazing. The waitress that looked after us was very attentive and friendly. The pub has been recently decorated and looked lovely and clean and fresh. If this is the usual quality of food etc then I will definitely return again soon.

We’d visited this pub a number of times pre-COVID and had loved it! The internal decor, whilst possibly a bit old fashioned, was warm and welcoming and the food back then was exceptional, fresh, very tasty and well prepared. Today, November 2021, following a Sunday out with the family we thought we’d visit The Sandford again. Sadly we felt very disappointed. The ‘Refurbishment’ had (in our opinion) left the inside of the pub colourless, characterless and bland, the table we were given was like external garden furniture, the chairs hard and uncomfortable… (we were, on request, re-seated to a more comfortable table). The food when it arrived was, genuinely sorry to say, poor. The roast potatoes were hard and tasted of burnt oil, like they’d been reheated, the cauliflower/broccoli cheese was very watery & bland and the chicken (there was no beef available!?) was somewhat dry and tasteless. The staff were very polite and attentive, but seemed deflated, there was no real friendliness, engagement or energy. Overall, an empty experience. We came, we ate, we left, with nothing memorable to look back on.

Thanks for a great evening, the food was amazing as always and the kids were able to enjoy the garden. Thanks to the wonderful staff who couldn’t do enough for us.

Popped in on the off chance to have a quick bite to eat. Great Burgers and despite other reviews we had great service and good banter with the waitress. The plus for us is that The Sandford is a dog-friendly pub. The pub looks like it's recently been refurbished and there's a lovely enclosed garden. Would definitely return if I were in the area again.

We regularly visit with our family, the staff are friendly and accommodating. Lovely outdoor space benefiting from a small children’s play park. The menu changes often giving a good variety of meals (brilliant selection of gluten free meals too) highly recommend.

Still a great place to eat and drink. Great outdoor space and also good for live music. We often go past here and stop for a bite to eat or a drink on the way home. Great Landlord and Landlady will welcome you with a friendly face. And they don’t forget you!

We had been here before a few years ago, but this time was a disappointment. We were seated at what I can only describe as garden furniture, the seats were so low the child in our party had to sit on a folded coat to be high enough to reach the table, and she is not tiny. The soup starter was very plain, but no complaints. Then the beef lasagne! It was disgusting and could not be eaten. Was it even beef? The burger bun was completely dry and the top half was not eaten. The foot long hot dog had a very nice sausage but that's all. The bread roll was again as dry as can be. That was also left. The table next to us mentioned to the waitress that there food was not nice as well. We did not mention anything because firstly no one bothered to ask if we needed anything or whether the food was OK. Also the place was so very busy we did not want to make a fuss and have people looking at us. So we just adked for the bill and went home for pudding. Not the experience we had a few years ago.

Very disappointed with visit today. Booked for 3pm for 7 of us as our final holiday meal together with family and friends. We were finally shown to table at 3.40pm although meals came out pretty quick as we preordered at bar, food was OK though. Service extremely slow and so paid up and left without pudding or coffee. Not the end to our holiday we had wanted.

Visited on Mon. 11th Oct. during the afternoon. Alarm bells should have rung as nobody was in there. The waitress took our order, my friend asked for no onions with her meal, my husband fried egg to be cooked well. After half an hour the meals appeared. Onions on my friends meal, soft egg on my husband's plate & the Naan Bread I ordered didn't come out for another 10 minutes. When it did come out it was like a piece of cardboard at the ends & a biscuit in the middle! My friend meal.was running in grease! Asked if we wanted any sauces etc waited at least another 10 mins by which time we had eaten what was edible.Another couple had arrived & they too waited a long time for their food and when we left they still hadn't received their condiments.Went to pay the bill & complained to waitress all she could say was sorry. Didn't even give us a discount as a gesture of good will, in fact when we were on our way back to our hotel I looked at the bill & I had been overcharged £2.50 for the Naan Bread! I rang & complained & spoke to the waitress, told her I would be back to get a refund of £2.50. Went back twice on Wednesday 13th it was closed! So never got my refund.Avoid, & go to The Duke of Wellington in Wareham, lovely food & friendly staff.

Visited the Sandford on Sunday for a roast dinner, the best i have had in years. Friendly atmosphere the staff were nice and a lovely warm sunny day.

Visited with my family, service was fairly slow. Meals were very hit and miss. However, concerning when they asked how we’d like the gammon cooked as if it were a steak! The curry was very bland and tasteless along with their mushroom soup which arrived resembling what could have been part of a bush tucker trial. Hot dogs and gammon turned out much nicer and gammon cooked through ;) seemed that staff were young and inexperienced, could be part of the problem!

So a family of 4 adults and two children we were looking for a nice! Place to eat , should have read the reviews as has to be the worst meals we’ve eaten . Cauliflower and broccoli water not cheese! Roast dinner shocking gloopy gravy, stuffing overcooked and not appealing at all. Pie with very little meat all soaked in half a jug of gravy . I am unable to list my complaints however waiting staff(young lady) did apologise. Paid bill in full as just wanted to get out the place . I’d say go elsewhere don’t waste your money . I’d like to know if the chef has any training as could probably do with a refresher.

Good food and very reasonably priced. Service was ok; probably the only let down to be honest. The manager (young woman) very good & helpful. Server was certainly avoiding taking an order or doing more than required.. Wouldn’t rush back, but won’t complain about a good dinner

We had a lovely lunch at The Sandford. The music was a bit loud so we chose to sit right down by the road which was also noisy. The food was absolutely excellent except that I had the lemon desert with the blood orange sorbet which was spoilt by streaks of some really odd tasting red goo. Without that it would have been delicious.

We booked a table for 8 for 8pm and arrived early, the table we were supposed to be having was still occupied by another family. No problem we had some drinks in the bar area and listened to the excellent live band playing. Drinks order taken and then taken to our table, not the original allocated table but another one as the family were still chatting and drinking. We provided our order in advance of sitting at the table and everyone raved at their food, I had the steak and ale pie. The pub was really busy and a little gutted we found this gem on our last night as we would have come back again.

Forgot to bring out two of our meals, had to run after the waitress to find out this information as nobody bothered to tell me. Ended up leaving hungry. Everyone elses food wasn’t great, so didn’t miss much.

We booked a family meal at the Sanford pub. The fish and chips was the worst I’ve had. I’ve never had a battered haddock over cooked so badly. It was terrible. My wife had the steak and genuinely couldn’t cut through it with a steak knife! I’m not exaggerating at all….she couldn’t cut through it with a steak knife!…It was sent back and removed from the bill.Others in the party ordered curry which was described as tasteless and possibly out of a can. Whether it was or wasn’t is insignificant to the fact it was another unsatisfying meal to add to the disgusting fish and inedible steak.The service was good and staff were friendly and understanding but there is no excuse for the standard of food when considering the prices being charged. It is not overly expensive but it is certainly not cheap.I have passed this pub hundreds of times over the years and thought it was time to finally try it out. We had family visiting who were staying close by which made me think it was a good option.It was not a good option, I feel sick and I will never return.

Beautiful food and service the staff were great and very accommodating we thought we would try it out one night on our holiday and I’m glad we did. I live locally and am a regular. The staff are welcoming and the food is always of a high standard, served hot and in good time. It can be busy but the staff cope well and we enjoy our visits. The curry is my favourite and is always fresh. I would welcome a salad option but only because of my waistline!

Had a steak and ale pudding pie… really nice. My parter loved her burger. Really tasty, didn’t wait long, even though they were very busy with a music event in the ample beer garden. Great value for money too. Give the Sandford a go ;)

Lovely place to eat or drink. I do often coming to the pub with my little one and even a dog. Great kids meal, big adult portions, even a bowl of water for the dog. So I DO recommend this place if you want to just "chill out" or to have a lovely Sunday meal with a family..

We booked a table at The Sandford pub for our anniversary and really enjoyed our food. The atmosphere was great & even though the pub was busy the staff were always around checking to see how our meal was and topping up our drinks. Really enjoyed our visit.

Ok food nothing special would probably not go again - more of a one time thing. Staff need to be taught how to be a bit kinder to customers that are paying their wages

I won’t go too far but it is known they serve out of date food to customers (but still laugh about it with certain ‘favourites’ and tell them to just not order it)Poor staff management and poor service, I would just skip this place all together if I were you.Greasy chips, rubbery burger, stale bun and a side of wilted lettuce leaves.

I suspect our visit was the same day as SimonR3578 (July 4th). Our experience was identical and it saves me wrining anything more. Two and a half hours for a two course "meal"!I'm not a serial complainer - this is the first negative review I've written.

I don’t believe in posting a bad review without first making my observations and complaint known directly to the place in question. However, as a result of my disappointment in how they handled my feedback I feel compelled to repeat my review here. Mutton dressed as Lamb. I’ve past the place many times recently and on appearances it’s obvious someone there has great vision in the great developments they’ve been working hard on during lockdown. Shame the food doesn’t meet up to the standards of refurbishment. Having had to cope with crap fast good for a few days I arrived hungry anticipating a good food place as the Sandford appears to be. This was the feedback I gave that the person I spoke to behind the bar seemed to not give a damn about . 1 the worse ever blandest ever chilli con-carne, get better in a hospital. No salt or pepper could fix. 2. They give out those pet hate of mine ketchup sachets that you need to open 6 of to get a decent serving of ketchup that doesn’t taste like ketchup, (why does any catering establishment but those Booker cheep sachets I never know, and finally 3. Staff generally unfriendly and unwelcoming . Could do much much better.

We are a small group of motor cyclists who finish our weekly ride at the Sandford pub with a meal. One Sunday 5 of us meet in the pub car park to begin our ride. Couldn,t believe it out comes man from the pub shouting u park here this is a private car park.We explained 10 of us eat every week in the pub but he just told us to leave. His loss use another pub..

Hate to say it but we went for Sunday lunch and the whole experience was pretty dire. The waiting staff seemed to be working as hard as they could but obviously very thin on the ground. Long wait for ordering, drinks and food. When the food eventually did arrive it was quite frankly one of the worst roasts I have ever had. Rubbery bland pork, raw parsnips, chewy stale Yorkshire pudding, hard potatoes and the attempt at gravy was awful. The cauliflower broccoli cheese which you have to pay extra for was swimming in some kind of milky watery liquid. Unfortunately there wasn't one redeeming feature other than the staff trying their best. God knows what's going on in the kitchen. Driven past this place countless times and thought it looked nice from outside, but now I've experience it I can honestly say we won't be returning. It doesn't give me pleasure to leave negative reviews but had I known from someone else's experience then I would have been spared todays disappointment and waste of time and money.

Amazing place for a meal looks like it has recently been refurbished decor lovely staff so friendly and polite and food was absolutely gorgeous thanks for a great visit will go back if ever in Dorset again

We called in for Sunday lunch as we were passing and were lucky they had space. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. The food was just superb, we all had the Sunday roast and can find nothing negative to say. We will call back for definite. Maybe even try their other food if is just as good we can’t be disappointed. Recommended highly

Visited many times in the past year and the staff are always cheerful and the food is good with very generous portions. Ideal place to stop if you get stuck in the rush home from the beach and want to chill while the traffic settles down.

Visiting holiday camp nearby. We researched this restaurant on line, and it showed an excellent menu. When we arrived we were told that my mixed grilled I had been fantasising for the last week was not available, together with many other items. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, they had a limited menu.Also, the place has just been re-painted, and the smell of paint was over-powering.On the other hand, the cheese burgers we had were cooked to perfection, very good quality, and big side portions( no need to order side dishes).The chef's "tempura style" onion rings were to die for.At last, but not least, the service was the best part of our visit.Amber was a young, but knowledgeable waitress. She also seemed to be training other staff while working. She made our visit very special, and the restaurant is very lucky to have her.If you visit, please tip generously, she deserves every single penny.

Had a takeaway of Roast Pork and Turkey served in out of this world gravy and with superb selection of vegetables including roast potatoes red cabbage carrots etc. Stayed hot and was awesome. Looking forward to sitting in the pub with a proper draught pint very soon. Great job Jamie!

Ordered chicken in crispy seasoning but had a lot of pink in the middle, we complained and we was told it was a vein! They offered us a refund

Had a takeaway roast yesterday and it was amazing!!!! Huge portions and was absolutely delicious. Didnt need to eat for the rest of the day! Also great covid measures in place for collection

Fantastic Valentines offer- food was value for money.The Proseco and meal created the ideal ambience to make up for Valentines under lockdown 21.

We have just had the delights of eating our 3 course meals from Jamie and the team. The food was sublime and cooked to perfection.The menu as a whole looked superb, and with a free bottle of champagne with each order the £40 was great value for money.Would highly recommend to anyone.

Just had Valentine’s Day takeaway, we both had the chicken, absolutely wonderful, I can thoroughly recommend the Sandford Pub for a takeaway, it’s like a meal out under lockdown.

Jamie & the staff at the pub couldn’t have been more helpful in arranging a takeaway Christmas dinner for my elderly relatives. The food was really fantastic and during what has been such a difficult year for everyone brought a smile to my family. Thank you so much for sorting and for giving them a good Christmas in the circumstances. Wanted to take the time to say thank you and wish you all well for 2021 ! Jamie at the Sandford has produced the most amazing roasts to takeaway during lockdown. Full of flavour, perfect veg and lashings of gravy. Looking forward to be able to eat at the pub.

i came along for lunch in Oct to try it out for the first time. The food came out and i tucked in and soon realised it was one of the nicest pub meals ive ever had. During the meal and after, i had a couple of pints and made a point of praising the waitress for the nice food and great work ethic she had. I then ask for one more pint before i go, unfortunately it had a weird taste to it, it turns out the barrel had just been changed. As i had enjoyed my time up until then and i had the 50% off food, i asked to swap my drink and that i would be happy with just a half pint. I sat back down, after a while i realised my drink wasn't coming. I went and found the waitress and asked for the drink, her response was that she had spoken to her boss and all the pints will taste the same, so im not getting a new one. To not swap my dodgy pint from a barrel change is one thing, but to just blank me and expect me to hunt for the waitress and ask for something any sane person would say i was entitled to is a joke. One thing i noticed after moving to the area, bakers arms sometimes your lucky to get a seat. This place the car park is generally quiet, with some cheap second hand vehicles for sale. Treating people like that is a joke, good luck making it through the next year

Ate here on our first night in Dorset, good pub grub, had the baked camembert as the starter which was lovely, then hubby had the sausage and mash which he enjoyed and I had the chilli which was OK. Staff were friendly but the pub was very quiet for a Saturday night.

We visited here for dinner whilst a night away in the area. Being coeliac it’s difficult to find a place that serves gluten free food and staff that understand! I was delighted to find out that this place offers around 80% of their menu gluten free. I was so pleased to find battered fish and chips on the menu as had seen So many people eating this at the chip shop earlier that day!Food was served swiftly even though busy. Their covid restrictions are good and you felt safe! Highly recommend especially if you have allergies or intolerances!

Lovely lunch at the Sandford yesterday. Food was piping hot and very tasty. The young lady behind the bar was very welcoming and very pleasant - a real asset to the pub! Extra bonus was that the pub is running its own EOTHO scheme but make sure you book your table beforehand. Will definitely visit again.

Called up at 2.50 on a Sunday to see if they had any lunch tables left. They managed to fit us in at the last minute and by 3pm we were seated. The service was covid safe and very friendly at the same time. The Sunday roast was generous and yummy and all very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend

My husband and I were away on holiday when we visited here with friends who knew the pub. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. The New Zealand Sav.Blanc was especially good and a great price. We were seated a little close to the next table but faced the other way so felt comfortable. We would certainly recommend it and our friends who live closer will be back. The staff were friendly and efficient.

Wow what a pub, we called last Monday on the off chance we could get a meal. There was no rejection or any complaint that we should book first. Instead we were greeted with a warm welcome, shown to a table and the three of us had a wonderful meal, then to cap it all they applied the “eat out help out” discount even tho it had ended weeks ago. So we booked a Sunday lunchtime meal for my wife and I. Well I have never seen a meal served up as big as this one, except in a carvery. The beef was pink in the middle the huge Yorkshire pud was staggering all the veg was cooked to perfection, the the gravy was so good it made you want to lick your plate clean.Today we were back this time I had gammon my wife and our friend had the salmon, once again the meal was cooked to perfection the girls serving were the usual attentive, friendly selves. So if you want a fantastic hearty meal in friendly surroundings look no further than the Sanford. One of the best pubs on the isle of Purbeck. Oh one more thing to save disappointment it is best to book in advance.

Phoned for table, was told yes at 4pm but needed table back for 6pm, which was perfect.On arrival, the place was empty.Seated, and table is sticky. Not sure if it is what they are washing them with, for Covid.Placed order, first draft beer tasted horrible. Exchanged for another draft, and still tasted wrong and looked flat.Meanwhile an older couple came in for a table. Was told fully booked out.A guy came in and was told can serve meals outside as booked up inside.An older gentleman came in for a table and was told all booked up, can serve outside.Phone rang for a booking. So this caller who hasn't yet made the effort to arrive on site and come inside, has been told if they come in now, they need the table back for 6pm ‍♀️Really?? Three on site customers told no, and One off site potential customer, still to travel to location is told yeah.Sat listening to a constant running water sound from the bathroom. Like a faulty sistern flowing.On a good note! The food was lovely. The presentation looked good, and the staff were pleasant.Can't comment on social distancing per previous comments as no one else there.

Booked restaurant today, food looked great, shown to our table and found that no social distancing in the pub as were to be sat right next to another family about 1 ft away. We complained and we were advised this is how it was going to be. Walked out of this disgraceful pub restaurant and would advise others who value their families health to not go to this restaurant as they do not care a jot

Wasn’t really sure what to expect but we were all very pleasantly surprised by the food served. Every meal we had was lovely - generous portions too. Staff were working really hard but were attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Would recommend if you like decent pub food. (Decor bit tired would be my only criticism!)

West last Wednesday as part of eat out to help out. Booked in advance. Was really busy and plenty of people outside. Very well controlled. I opted for the mixed grill. My wife the burger... Both huge but very very tasty portions. Definitely go back again. They could do with at least another member of staff as the staff were run ragged. But they were still polite and smiley despite the heat, busy period and short staff. Thanks again!

Good food. Very busy due to Eat out to help out scheme so the food was quite a wait. We were sat in the conservatory at the back but staff frequently visited us, took drinks orders and brought everything that we needed.

Best Sunday roast ever! And super service, nothing was too much trouble. Would thoroughly recommend!

Lunch for 5 starting with cabiatta garlic bread which was delicious and for me a chicken breast burger, which was juicy with a lovely flame grilled taste with chips and amazing onion rings. I’m amazed at the variety of reviews on here as I can genuinely say my meal was excellent, if anything it was a struggle to eat it all with such a big portion and the price was very reasonable.Nice large table with social distancing and found the staff to be attentive and polite. I’d certainly look to go back.

Probably one of the worst meals I’ve ever had! The ‘food’ was appalling ......The Nachos were covered in a revolting tomato ragu type spicy sauce NOT salsa as the menu promised. The garlic bread was like 2 pieces of dough with a greasy topping & the garlic was no where to be seen.The 2 mains ......BBQ Chicken - dry tasteless & covered in another revolting sauce Grilled Chicken breast - the piece of chicken was grey looking and difficult to cut, it was hidden under a pile of greasy anaemic onion rings + the on the plate was 1/2 a mushroom & 1/2 a tomato ..... where were the other 1/2’s ?The staff forgot to process our drinks order and we had to chase them on this. We could not face arguing with the polite yet vacant staff so just got up and left. I would not recommend anyone to come here There must be loads of other far better restaurant / pubs to eat in locally !!!???

8 of us visited today. Very accommodating with 2 tables of 4 next to each other. The Food was amazing and so was the service. Definitely worth the 5*

this place serves the most amazing pub food and was super catering towards my mum who is coeliac. Not only do they offer gluten free batter for fish and chips and onion rings, but they also have a dessert menu with only one option not catering to her dietary needs! The baked cheesecake and apple crumble proved impressive as well as the sausage and mash with huge portion sizes at an extremely generous price.Would highly recommend if you are looking for a good pub meal in Dorset

We drove past this pub a couple of tunes and thought we would give it a go. We were not disappointed we had an amazing meal which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Prices were good for food and drink. Would highly recommend

We had a table for 12 which had been decorated beautifully for my 60th Birthday.....there were adults & children, we all had starters & mains, every meal was different, the food was piping hot & totally delicious , plenty of choice as well..... Can thoroughly recommend visiting you will not be disappointed
