Always on the search for the elusive stand out Pub Sunday lunch. Think we have just found our new favourite! Just under an hour drive for us in Surrey to The Samuel Palmer but well worth journey. Table of 4 booked for 12.30pm Nice homemade Focaccia and whipped butter for the table to start then we shared some charred, salted padron peppers and amazing crispy Korean fried chicken wings. All ordered Roasts for the mains, 2 Perfectly cooked roasted and sliced beef sirloins and 2 of the Roasted pork chop which all came with Yorkshire puddings, roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables and some really good Cauliflower Cheese! Everything seasoned on point and all served hot with plenty of jugs of the gravy. Deserts were outstanding. I had a Brioche and chocolate chip baked bread and butter pudding and the table also had a chocolate delice and a proper Apple crumble. Service team were attentive and good knowledge of the menu The Kitchen obviously know what they’re doing and producing real tasty food, will definitely be back

We live relatively locally and have been meaning to try the Samuel Palmer since the muddy stilettos review. We were expecting great things but were so disappointed on many levels. Starting on a positive, the setting and decor is lovely but the service was slow and without any warmth, the Sunday roasts were big but so bland and lacking any flavour. Finally the price was £198 for 2 adult and 2 children courses with a glass of wine and a beer! So many better local pubs for half the price

Delightful and attentive service from the Samuel Palmer. My partner and I enjoyed a Sunday roast - delightful presentation and a twist in the Sunday lunch ‘norm’. We’ll definitely be back. Table booking essential!

Delicious food and excellent service. Had a private area for family meal. Really lovely pub to stop for lunch. It was very busy so worth booking.

Today we dined at the Samuel Palmer in Shoreham, after recently looking at the website and seeing the Sunday lunch menu with appealing options, including Kentish Ribeye or Grilled Pork Chop for two. Timings - Having been seated at 1530, we finally paid a bill for 4 (2 adults and two children) two hours later, for 3 roast mains, one children’s burger & chips and 4 desserts (two pre made treacle tart slices with yoghurt ice cream and 2 kids chocolate ice cream scoops). Quality - After the mains finally arrived (75 minutes in), my ‘Pork Chop’ I ordered was actually a cheap cut of rolled pork shoulder, thinly sliced, extremely poor. This was not mentioned at the time of ordering and when we did bring this up, we were informed they did have chops earlier, apologised and mentioned they would do something about the bill - nothing happened. To add insult, seasoning was lacking, potatoes (non existent) bland, cabbage barely enough to register on the plate and a couple of slices of beetroot (ok) and Carrots (only veg with a hint of seasoning) I can only refer to as al dente. The gravy was also sparse and so lacking in any depth of flavour, can only be assumed to have originated from a packet. Price - At £39 for two courses and for this lack of service (not the waiting service fault, inexcusable wait times from the kitchen), lack of quality, this is outrageous. In Summary - The bill came in a few pence short of £180, which is a complete rip off, considering one children’s meal (Burger & Chips @8.50), two lots of kids chocolate ice cream, and 3 roasts. Drinks wise, 2 Lagers, two AF Guinness and a Coke and an Apple Juice The one positive was the Treacle Tart and Yogurt Ice Cream, these were very good.

It was a lovely day for a trip out to a country pub and our daughter fancied the look of this one. I have to say the place has been renoved beautifully, inside and out. Inside was nearly empty - maybe people had already read the online reviews. We didn't really fancy anything on the menu as we only wanted a light lunch like a sandwich and there weren't any listed. The 3 soups didn't sound like they'd be homemade so we all went for the sausage roll with apple sauce. Despite the lack of people, the food took ages to arrive. When it eventually turned up, 2 of the 3 sausage rolls were burnt black. Mine was OK so I started on it. It was very dry and tasteless so I tried the applw sauce but that was thin, sloppy and tasteless. My husband was furious after the long wait and took the food up to the bar to complain saying it was disgusting. The server offered to refund our 3 meals immediately. Avoid this place if you want to eat good food!

Very well appointed. And that was it. We order our food waited half an our with nothing to eat. I went to the bar to ask what was going on, I was told that there would be 5 minutes more to wait. I gave it 15 minutes (45 in total) and went back to the bar only to be told there was trouble with the till, and it wasn't printing orders in the kitchen. I ended up getting mu money back back and left. What a great way to celebrate our anniversary!

Well the portions are extraordinarily small. Wish I'd read previous reviews about the tuna nicoise ... Really bears no relation to a true tuna nicoise and is microscopic, consisting only of rocket (wrong) a few potatoes, couple of olives and cured tuna. Improve it or take it off the menu. The food took just short of an hour to arrive. There are no sandwiches or snacks for lunch. The only positive is the waiting staff are polite. Will not return.

I was recommended the Samuel Palmer by two separate friends who had already visited. I'm so pleased I took their recommendation and visited for Sunday Lunch. Food was top notch, excellently presented and arrived nice and hot. The two courses we had were very tasty and well cooked. The service we received was excellent by all staff members, who were very friendly and happy to help. The main dining room was cosy and comfortable and the facilities were kept clean. I will definitely be coming back to the Samuel Palmer in beautiful Shoreham.

We held our 40th wedding anniversary here and booked the rear garden area and private function room. We had the most fantastic time as I’m sure our friends and family did too. The staff were amazing making sure we had everything we needed and promptly responded to enquiries/requests leading up to the party. They set up our playlist we compiled regularly cleared tables and kept everything flowing. The buffet was exceptional and plenty of it and at the end of the evening they arranged to keep all our gifts in the office for us to collect the next day. Thank you all for making this such a memorable day for us.

We stayed at the Samuel Palmer pub for two nights as hotel guests. The pub had recently been refurbished and so we were the first guests to stay. We were there for a wedding and so 6 of us had the three rooms and it genuinely was perfect. The rooms were so beautifully made with such good attention to detail, it truly felt quite luxurious and the staff were especially helpful and went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable. The food was also magnificent, definitely not pub grub it was high quality restaurant standard food. I would without hesitation recommend staying here and would come back soon if I can! Thank you so much.

Had been recommended by a previous visitor, so we were expecting a nice lunch. However, ordered the tuna nicoise salad, which was pitifully small with a tiny portion of tuna, a couple of new potatoes and cherry tomatoes and no dressing. It would have been pushing it even as a starter, and at £15, it was exorbitant. The 'mushy peas' served with the fish and chips ( which was apparently okay) were inedible. We told the waiter, when asked how the food was, our complaints, in a very polite way, but although he was equally polite, and told us that our comments would be passed on to the chef, there was no further comment or attempt to redress the problem. Certainly won't be returning

Well, big boy, it was - spectacular. That glazed pork starter is (hands slap together) f-ing phenomenal. The roast, as a main, spectacular (throws towel over shoulder) and the service, well, let me just say these guys - have it together.

My belly of pork was really lovely but my brother chose the burger which was rather small and he was still hungry afterwards. He ordered the apple pie for afters but after a 35 min wait for it gave up.

After reading the 5* reviews we thought The Stanhope would be a nice country pub to take my sister to for a birthday lunch. There were some positives…Friendly staff, Drinks were good, log fire was appreciated. But don’t be fooled by the photos on the website, the food was a big disappointment I’m afraid. The Pork belly needed more cooking and was served just about warm but on a hot plate, the Beef cheeks were tough, had no flavour, there was 1x 1/4” slice of undercooked carrot in the middle of the plate served with new potatoes, which were undercooked (mash would have been much better) the gravy was tasteless (like Bisto) We couldn’t eat it so tried to fill ourselves up with stodgy jam sponge and custard. I don’t normally complain but …..🫤

We had a fantastic stay last night. We took our doggy who was welcomed with open arms. We shared the best Chateaubriand we've ever had in the cosy bar by the fire, slept in a very comfy bed with blackout blinds and came down for a hearty brekkie this morn. The Bramley bathroom products and dressing gowns are a lovely touch, staff are super friendly and we were worried Penshurst was totally closed over winter but the cafe and shop were open and we did a lovely walk in the winter sunshine thanks to the wall available on the pub website to download. Thank you, we can't wait to come back soon!

Lovely old pub. Visited after a trip to Hever Castle. Decent menu selection. We have Nacho’s as a starter which were lovely. Followed by fish and chips. No mushy peas unfortunately. Lovely friendly staff and a nice cosy atmosphere.
