From start to finish our afternoon tea experience was simply amazing! My mum and I were impressed with the restaurants beautiful decor and the warm welcome from the attentive staff . The food was delicious and plentiful ( a takeaway box was very much appreciated) The festive muffin and the sausage roll were amongst my personal favourites . An afternoon tea voucher has already made its way to my Xmas list- again ! I look forward to returning in the new year

Arrived on a cold dank day, a Tuesday, with a partie of 10 for breakfast. Our waitress was exceptional. She was so attentive and courteous. I really warmed to her. The food was presented well and tasted better. The ambience warm and comfortable. Please give this place a try. You will be happy you did.

We came for lunch on Monday to celebrate my mother's birthday. I was so impressed by all the staff for the friendly and courteous service - right from the moment I rang up to reserve a table to the time we left. Mum has mobility issues and uses a wheelchair. The restaurant had kept us a table that we could access, with a chair with arms - that mum could get in and out of - and a view onto the marina. The food was delicious - cooked and presented really well. We will definitely be back. Thank you to team Salthouse.

Never as a paying customer have I ever been spoken to in such a manner as Shane the restaurant manager did towards me this evening, on the evening of a birthday dinner for my partner! We called him over to try to be helpful to advise him that our waitress should be advising people if something on the menu changes due to my gluten intolerance. We were told by her that the majority of the menu was already gluten free. Therefore, to receive skinny fries when I specifically ordered the haddock because I wanted chunky chips without any warning prior seemed to me something the manager should be aware of, so that he could raise it with your waiting staff. I can not believe how defensive Shane immediately became and not even an apology! He was not only defensive, but attacked me by stating that he thought I was “rather angry over some chips”! It was his attitude with no apology that got my back up, but then his defensiveness and him then telling me in a condescending manner “to not let it spoil my evening, it’s just chips” was just insulting. He kept going on and on, repeating the same defensive stuff, even though I just kept saying okay, okay several times in the hope he would just go away & eventually had to ask him to go. It was clear he was looking to antagonise me! With any customer complaint, an apology should immediately follow, especially when a mistake has be made by the staff! Rude does not describe how this manager conducted himself! The food: it was ok, not 4 or 5 stars as the haddock was a small portion but tasted very fresh. The chunky chips looked better than they tasted. The desserts were okay but overall the food was not outstanding and we wouldn’t rush back even if you did take Shane out of the equation! I did appreciate the chef providing the white chocolate writing on the plate wishing my partner a HB but it didn’t change the upset caused. We had no drinks so total spent £72. This experience with Shane’s approach and attitude completely spoiled not only our dinner but the entire evening for us! Had we had more time, as we were going to the theatre, I would’ve left there and then. An email to higher management after stating that she was shocked to receive a complaint about Shane, who had been a valued member of their team the past 15 years, and concluded with the following: ‘We always strive to give the best customer service and hope in the future you will return to experience our usual high standards. I would be more than happy to assist with this reservation and include a gesture of goodwill.’ If the gesture of goodwill is on par with what she referred to in her reply as my partner receiving a “birthday dessert”, (which was a plate with white chocolate writing on it and 2 tiny miniature meringues with a single strawberry) then even if they offered dark chocolate on a plate saying ‘Sorry’, I don’t think I will be making a special trip from London to find out.

We had an amazing anniversary dinner here on a Monday evening so our frame of mind hadnt prepared us for such a special evening. Particularly as we decided on the early bird menu but they had such good choices and we pushed the boat out to four courses at £44 including a glass of wine or a cocktail. Probably a case of eyes bigger than our stomachs but the whole experience was extraordinary and we are everything out in front of us. Well presented beautifully cooked food served by discreet but friendly staff. The atmosphere in the restaurant was also surprising, aside from the business residents taking their dinner here there were also several other tables of diners and the dining space behind the bar was absolutely full of older people clearly on an evening out. An amazing buzzing space that just made the whole experience even more special. It’s true to say that is has been ages since we’ve eaten out due to dieting but this was worth doing and I feel no guilt. Well done to everyone, the talented chefs, the lovely staff and even the receptionists who were so welcoming. A big thank you for the surprise dessert plate for our anniversary that was a lovely touch and this chocolate fondant was sublime. We will be back

What an amazing and surprising evening spent at the Salthouse. We dined for the early bird menu and decided, as it was our anniversary, to make the most of it and go for the four course choice. The food was magnificent. Well presented, perfect portion size and very tasty. The wines were excellent, the staff very friendly but unobtrusive and the restaurant atmosphere was good. We used to dine out a lot but as we've both been dieting we have almost forgotten what indulgent food feels like. I would thoroughly recommend the Salthouse in what is otherwise a gastronomic wilderness. There is only a handful of places in ipswich i consider decent enough and this rates for us at the top of the pile. Thank you to everyone who made our evening so enjoyable. Great food is a true aphrodisiac.

For once, somewhere that was worth the money. Im so fed up going to places that charge a lot and end up being a disappointment .... but, picked here last minute for my birthday, hubby was sceptical as Ipswich not exactly salubrious but we loved it ... went with friends and we were all mega impressed. Service perfectly attentive, but not too much to become annoying, staff friendly and helpful but still very professional, food great... basically thank you so much for a great birthday meal. Next time we have an occasion and want a special meal im pretty sure we will pick here.... And, it wasn't a crazy rice for the standard, wine started at a very reasonable price per bottle and went up from there- so catered for all pockets ..considering we had 3 courses and started and ended with cocktails it was worth every penny

My husband & I shared 3 digit small plates & they were all good.. lime soy crevettes (4 large) with salad greens, 3 fried balls of duck with Hoisin & tempura courgette flower. We then had two “starters” for mains & two sides. He had shrimp & lobster cake. Not great. No visible fish, thick panko & very bread-y. My scallops were very nice by comparison. Fat cut truffle Parmesan chips were good & cheesy broccoli with cauliflower gratin also tasty. We were stuffed for £100 for both- that’s with 2 beers + 1 glass of wine. Our server was helpful & cheerful. The music was bad & loud! They need to sort that, as we might’ve had another wine and a dessert but felt chased off by the poor choice of tunes.

My friend had a high tea voucher bought by her daughter so we went there for lunch. Not too busy and the place was lovely and clean. They were flexible in terms of letting us use the high tea voucher for lunch menu so it was great. But the portion wasn’t big so my friend had decided to order a high tea after 2 course meal. The cafeteria coffee was very watery and had no taste at all and we were not given any milk and I asked one of the staff who took the order for the table next to us and he wouldn’t give us the milk and instead pointed to other staff and we had to wait, how terrible! We had some leftover of our high tea and we asked to be taken away, we were given a box to do it ourselves, I work in hospitality and this kind of service is so dated, the couple next to us struggle to close the box and so did we but the staff chose to chat among themselves instead. So when the food was ok but service wasn’t great, don’t think I will choose to rush back anytime soon considering it wasn’t exactly cheap!!

Strongly advise there’s much better value for money on Ipswich waterfront after dining in all the other eateries it has to offer !!

Amazing food and the most polite and helpful waiting staff I've encountered for a long time. Really couldn't fault the quality or standards there. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars not 5 is due to how noisy it was. The design of the restaurant (which aesthetically is stunning) incorporates high ceilings and open brick-work. Therefore when busy you cannot hear yourself think and genuinely struggle to have a conversation across the table. I appreciate this is structural and very little can be done but never the less it did take away from the overall experience which was a shame. Would have definitely given 5/5 otherwise.

I last reviewed this restaurant in 2023 when we had a great lunch. Not so yesterday. I went there specifically for the roast beef but they had “run out” of it by 2.30pm on a Sunday. I had the pork which was very nice but at £24 should be. The cauliflower cheese was extra! The Nosecco (£3 in supermarkets) was £25! Service (which was ok,not terrible and not great) was 12.5%. £143 for 3 people eating one course each plus one pudding. Two glasses of wine. One bottle of Nosecco. I would not come again. Far too expensive. I recommend the Suffolk Food Hall or the Woolpack for Sunday launch in Ipswich.

My wife and I visited the Salthouse before going to the cinema. We found the food to be decent but a bit overpriced and my wife's feather blade was a bit chewy in places. Our server was a bit pushy, trying to get us to buy the more expensive items and having over thirty minutes left to have a dessert we asked for a dessert menu which took ten minutes to arrive and then the server didn't return so we were unable to have one. While the venue itself is nice, overall we didn't find the food and service lived up to the prices we were paying.

Arrived for a ‘date afternoon’ with my wife on a quiet afternoon session Standards of cleanliness / service / decor etc all excellent Food menu a little limited but what was produced was of a very high standard Pricing - a big thumbs down from me. My wife ordered an expensive pork meal (£28) which I would have anticipated some accompanying items - instead you have to ‘build you own meal’ with extra dishes varying from £3-£5 which can soon increase the price. At least vegetables should be supplied with the meal? Overall a very pleasant experience, would go again and remain aware of pricing issues

We had a wonderful evening at the Salthouse with an Early Bird set menu. It was a well presented meal with enough to make you satisfied but not over full to bursting. We chose the same for each course, the duck liver parfait was lovely , the main was a bacon loin with vegetables and a duo of cheese to finish. We also chose a carafe of wine from their specials board as a treat. I thought the bacon loin although very good was salty but fortunately the accompanying potato dish managed to subdue the saltiness. The cheese duo was a perfect size and there were plenty of biscuits. The food was very good, the service excellent and more importantly we were not hurried. As it was my husbands birthday he was given a birthday chocolate ganache dessert which looked amazing. I would have no hesitation is recommending the Salthouse for Service, Atmosphere and most importantly, for very good food, expertly cooked and stylishly presented food. Their chefs do them proud

Upon arrival I was impressed with the surroundings/ decor, Was left a little undecided on the menu options as I felt nothing was particulary appetising so I decided to take the safe route and pick the serlion steak, it was so full of gristle it becomes deflating when leaving half the steak on the plate for the waitres to clear down, some of the chips were consistently raw on both plates and inedable, was a surprise to say the least. The Panna cotta was a delight but only a mouthful size, I found the restaurant tried to over compensate with the garnish to fill the bowl when it should be left simply as a Panna cotta as described If I’m honest I don’t think I’d go back sadly as the prices charged are not balancing with what’s received

When checking in to a hotel in an unfamiliar place, it is tempting to book one's first evening meal in the hotel's restaurant (unless, that is, one has had chance to research the alternatives beforehand). This may seem a safe option, but is often a mistake, as it was in this particular instance! Hotel: fine; restaurant: very disappointing. The food was OK: certainly not fine dining, but reasonably presented, somewhat over-priced, acceptably middle-of the-road fare; the wine list was extensive, albeit extremely over-priced. On the other hand, service - or perhaps I should say service management and training - was unacceptably poor. Only one member of the front-of-house staff demonstrated any semblance of professionalism; almost inevitably, he proved not to be home-grown (Portuguese, actually). I ordered an aperitif, and was asked by the young lady whether I was also ready to order my meal, which I was. First to arrive, very quickly, was my starter, a rather desiccated-looking terrine; I pointed out to this second young lady that I had yet to receive my aperitif, only to be assured that "it'll be coming"; I put the plate to one-side, awaiting the arrival of said aperitif, and waited, and waited....! Eventually a passing waiter - the aforementioned Portuguese gentleman - noticed that my starter was sitting uneaten, and thought to enquire why: he quickly brought my aperitif, and offered to remove my starter and have it "refreshed", which offer I foolishly declined. Aperitif consumed, my starter still remained uneaten until my Portuguese saviour again eventually noticed: this time I explained that I would quite like my £45 bottle of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with my meal rather than afterwards; once again, he quickly produced my wine, and I set to work upon my tired, unappetising-looking terrine which, by this point, had been sitting on my table for 25 minutes: it tasted much as it looked! No complaint about my main course - pork belly with rather dried-up cassoulet, cabbage and chips - but no particular compliment either. An hour into my meal, the subdued lighting suddenly turned up to a level that was uncomfortably bright. I enquired of my Portuguese friend the reason for this, to be told that the lighting system had a mind of its own, causing this to occur from time to time, but that he could offer no other explanation. For dessert, I chose the olive oil cake, which proved to be the highlight of an otherwise disappointing meal. On requesting the bill, my Portuguese friend advised that there would be no charge for the starter: perhaps he was actually higher up the food chain than I had imagined! I had booked the restaurant also for my second evening in Ipswich, but called by the reception desk on my way back to my room to cancel the reservation, on the basis that Ipswich could surely offer something rather better; indeed, this turned out to be the case within a minute's walk along the quayside (see separate review, if interested).

Seriously cannot believe how terrible this meal was. Shocking! Without sounding like a pretentious so-and-so, my girlfriend and I chose this restaurant having read amazing reviews online, for our last date night before I go abroad for two months to conduct business. We had the last sitting and I think this is where the problem lay. The steak, despite costing £30 without sides, was mostly fat, and my dish (the Duck confit) was all salt. We declined desserts and complained, to no avail, and left. It was awful. The staff were pleasant enough but we had to listen to them talk about their ‘problems’ as we were in close proximity to the bar and didn’t feel very welcome at all. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I spend my employment travelling the world and I have eaten everywhere -from Michelin star hotels on mountain tops to street food in Taiwan and I must say the quality of food in this restaurant was amongst the worst I’ve eaten. In fact I never leave reviews ever, period, but felt totally inclined to on this occasion due to the utter disappointment we both shared. Especially as it was our last night together for over nine weeks. Avoid! Instead look up Trip Advisors ten best places to eat in Ipswich and just delete this one. Or ignore at your peril (and wallet). Mr. D. Davey

Difficult to know where to start. This place does everything right. Let me qualify that. We called in at about 6.45pm to see if we could get a table in what looked like a well presented professional setup. Never been before, not really familiar with Ipswich - and the previous evening's meal out was decidedly average. The first point in the venue's favour is the absolutely pleasant and professional way that customers are greeted. No, we hadn't booked - all that was available was a table close to the exit, by the bar - unless we waited until a bit later. We decided to risk the bar area, which can be Siberia in restaurant terms, went away to freshen up, and came back at 7.30 - to be shown to a very nice table in the main body of the restaurant where we spent the evening. What followed was one of the very best experiences that either of us have ever had in a restaurant. Charming and very competent waiting staff (never pushy, just discreetly attentive - and cheerful) brought very fine olives to accompany some sparkling wine - which was not prosecco - followed by two courses that were were, quite simply, sublime. The duck confit embodied one of those rare experiences when you realise that you are eating something very special. It turned out to have been prepared by the sous chef. He will no doubt go far. It was the prefect blend of flavours and texture, generous without being too much to handle, and as the last mouthful disappeared one felt a pang of regret - like saying goodbye to a friend. A carafe of very nice red wine accompanied (I recommend the carafe if you don't want to drink too much!) and water is of course on tap - or in bottle, whichever you prefer. The main course will remain in my memory as one of the happiest dining experiences that I have ever had. (From the cheerful mood in the place, it is obvious that we were not the only folks enjoying ourselves.) Dessert ? A light and refreshing panna cotta with fresh fruit, Full marks for taste, texture, and the attractive way that it was served. The bill when it came was very reasonable, and I can only hope that we will visit this superb place again - it has to be one of the very best.

This is a very interesting restaurant space, full of quirky art set in a beautiful old building. The food & service are exceptional & the set menu if you order before 6:00pm is an amazing deal. Would highly recommend this to anyone who is needing to eat in Ipswich

We booked the early bird meal (book a a table between 5-6pm) we got a cocktail/glass of wine along with a 3 course meal for £29 + 12.5% gratuity. The food was amazing, fresh, local and flavoursome. The service impeccable. If you are staying at the Salthouse Habour Hotel or live in the Ipswich area get along and support a local high quality establishment. The ‘early bird’ is excellent value for money, supported by great service.

We stopped off, after a meal elsewhere, for a drink. We sat on one of the big sofas and relaxed in comfy surroundings. It was a lovely way to end the evening.

We had the Early Bird menu which included a cocktail or wine. The service was excellent. Food was delicious, looked and tasted wonderful. The only negative point is that this was booked for my birthday which was not acknowledged.

Beautiful local food and impeccable service. Been wanting to eat here for a while but due to its higher prices we decided to go with a voucher we received. However I can see why the price on the more expensive end of Ipswich's eateries, everything on the plate went well, nothing was unflavoured or missing and it was a real treat to savour.

What went well The staff were really good about helping get us a taxi to the station after the meal. My starter of tempura gherkins and artichokes and dessert of crumble with peach sorbet were tasy. Had a vegan menu. What didn't go well I enquired a few days before about vegan food and drinks. I got sent a food menu but nothing about vegan drinks, so when I asked on the night it was not a smooth process ordering wine (I think they had to check the labels). Aubergine and olives in tomato sauce was bland and small so took very little time to eat (much less time than mains everyone else had). Overall it was OK, with enthusiastic and accommodating staff but I would probably order starter, side and dessert instead if I find myself eating there again and they have thought about 3 courses for vegans but were not prepared for drinks side.

Staff were professional, friendly and genuine. We needed to amend the booking time due to traffic, which they were happy to do and didn't seem an issue for the restaurant. I had the cod with a salad which was really tasty and fresh/light. There were a few large parties in the restaurant the same time as us, however the service was still good and we weren't waiting. Definitely recommend this restaurant and the cod dish.

Afternoon tea package with unlimited tea/coffee. Other drinks we're extra and fairly expensive. Food was ok although some items very basic. Example pastrami sandwich had 1 slice of cold meat, no salad not even butter! Scones were tasty but rock hard and not the work of a professional. Cake selection was great, well made and tasty. Atmosphere in the restaurant is pleasant, plenty of space, although it gets very noisy when busy. Service was ok, but staff kept disappearing every time we wanted something. It was ok, but no better than average.

We enjoyed a really good sea trout dish. Service was pretty quick, which suited us on this occasion as we had an early dinner before visiting the theatre.

When we walked through the door we were quickly greeted with a warm and welcoming member of staff. All the staff were friendly. I had afternoon tea with my friend as we were celebrating her birthday and she was given a little cake - thank you! I recommend you guys to everyone! Hands down you do the best afternoon tea! The menu you are currently on is the best! I’m a diary fussy eater and apart from the salmon I ate everything! The sausage rolls are amazing! I love that you do classic sandwiches (ham) and scones without the fruit. The chocolate brownie was like heaven. We had tea and mocktails which were lovely & refreshing on a sunny spring day. Fantastic value for money! Thanks again & I will be back very soon ☺️

Amazing service, meal and venue. We had a party booking of 28 for my mums 70th. The staff were outstanding, nothing was a problem, they were so incredibly helpful, amazing with the children who can be difficult when up late but they were so very understanding and at the end when I thanked them for being so great their reply was you have a lovely family and will be welcome here anytime. They made my mum feel very special upgrading her standard room to one with marina views at no extra cost, helping her with taking presents to her room and loading her car the next day. They arranged take away containers for birthday cake. Managed to sort all our individual payments for food and drinks and were just so very accommodating it made our experience so special, I really recommend this venue for a special occasion, infact whenever the opportunity arises it is well worth a visit. The food was incredible too, we had 3 courses and my mum had breakfast too, everyone said it was delicious. Thank you to all the staff at Salthouse, you’re fantastic!

Friends got me afternoon tea for 2 voucher for my 60th. I wanted to treat other friends so used my voucher, plus paid for one more tea and a £40 bottle of sparkling. When it came to paying they said as afternoon tea had gone up since the voucher was purchased I had to pay the difference. I work in business so had already checked the small print, expiry date etc. I explained the voucher states afternoon tea for two. Thinking about it on the way home, they have had the money for the two afternoon teas for 8 months earning interest. Plus I paid £40 for wine. I have had tea there at least three times before, I think it needs a refresh. Great venue though and good service. I don't blame the waitress as she was doing as told. It was supposed to be a treat. Plus I was so shocked I left my leftovers, which I normally take for my husband.

Stayed just the one night, evening meal with our Morgan car club. Hotel is lovely, all areas tastefully decorated. Had a nice festive feel about it. Room beautifully furnished, everything you need and tasteful. Lovely dinner and breakfast served by friendly/professional staff. Could not find fault with anything, will be back.

The pub was having nice crowds and music. They have a special Cherokee, and that is awesome. The best part is they play all jouner of music according to the crowd.
