The Sally in Carlisle

Visited for the first time today for lunch with family Had pate for starters, chicken Sunday lunch for main and espresso crème brûlée for dessert - all amazing quality and very filling. Definitely be back.

The food was fantastic, as were the staff. The beef!!! Wow, talk about melt in your mouth. I can't wait to go back again

Really looking forward to trying The Sally as heard such good reviews. Went today with group of friends for Sunday lunch. Very impressed with decor and received a friendly welcome. Sadly I was rather disappointed with food. Starter and main course were served luke warm, roast potatoes were inedible and were very dark with a hole in the middle and I found my beef very fatty. Must have chosen a bad day as myself and members of our party very unimpressed!!

Food was brilliant, we thought a few times the staff had forgotten we were there waiting for menus and for our orders to be taken.

We had a one night stay at the Sally recently. Absolutely gorgeous room, extremely warm welcome from all staff. Delicious breakfast! Would definitely stay here again, thank you all.

We visited with friends for Sunday Lunch. Welcoming staff, friendly atmosphere & a visit from a knowledgeable chef. We really enjoyed our lovely, tasty food & will definitely be returning.

Great venue, food and overall experience. We live locally and when we want to meet friends for lunch and want a little something extra then this was a good choice. The staff are really attentive and look interested in what they are offering. We'll be back again sometime soon.

Stopped off for lunch. The beef toastie is a fantastic plate of food. Tender cuts of roast beef with melted cheese and caramelised onion in soft bread. Roast spuds, cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Best tenner I’ve spent on food in a long time. Friendly service. Thoroughly recommend.

We stayed here after visiting friends in the village. Lovely comfortable room, nicely appointed, comfortable bed. Good sized bathroom with powerful shower. The cooked breakfast was the best we have had in a while, good quality produce and piping hot. All staff we met were helpful and friendly. A great place to stay.

First time since new owners have taken it on. Unusually noisy due to a function taking over the car park and covered area, also very much a smell of smoking from the function. Food was excellent but everything took time possibly due to the function taking staff away from restaurant, things such as lack of napkins and empty glasses not being cleared added to it being very slow spoiled what had been planned as a special occasion . Food was excellent and perfectly presented.

Went for Sunday lunch. We were welcomed with a warm, friendly smile. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We were shown to our table, and as we were early, they left us to have a drink before ordering, which we really appreciated. Our order was taken by a very friendly waitress called Vicky she was absolutely lovely. The food was delicious and plentiful. We would have lived to have the 3 course meal, but after our starters and mains, we were stuffed and very happy we couldn't have asked for more. We will highly recommend it.

Stayed overnight in Sallys. Friendly, attentive service. Relaxed. Just off the motorway, great midway point for going north or south. We also had dinner here, just as good as breakfast. Only one warning in Sallys if your on a diet, you will give it up. You never leave Sallys hungry. Will stay again.

A short walk off Hadrian's Wall Path. Rooms were comfortable and spacious. Supper was delicious. The cheese soufle starter was exceptional. Would visit again.

Great little find this. Open every day of the week and selling good beers and a wide range of other drinks and snacks. Didn't eat but food menu looks very good. Didn't appear to be open from the front, but on driving into the rear car park found there were lots of people dining in a covered outdoor area, and inside was clean, modern and very spacious. Friendly staff too...well worth a visit and we'll be back!

Whenever you plan your Hadrian's Wall Path walk, or simply find yourself in the area, you should definitely plan to stay and/or eat at The Sally. The staff greeted us with a warm welcome and their friendly service ran throughout our stay. The rooms were impeccable, the beds perfect, the pillows sublime, and the the meals were the best we had over our 10 days in the north of England.

Absolutely beautiful food, 2nd time visiting and couldn't fault anything again, stunning presentation and really friendly staff!

Very pleasant visit to Carlise by air. The owner of The Sally picked us up from the airport and we went for lunch. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great local Pub with excellent food a short distance away from Carlisle Airport. I can say that it was probably the best Lunch I have ever had. Would highly recommend.

Very good food,but bit heavy on the salt on the venison medallion, chocolate ice cream not very exciting other than that starter excellent prawns and the goats cheese salad

Lovely relaxed ambience in the contemporary styled dining room. All staff very friendly and engaged in their service. The menu had plenty choice and both our mains were beautifully cooked and presented. We shared the evening’s ‘Special’ dessert ( blond cheesecake) and it WAS delicious. The bar also had a better than usual selection of beers/ lagers. Would be very happy to return.

Vicky and the team are always welcoming and happy to make your experience truly excellent. Very relaxed atmosphere. This is the third time I have eaten here and it won't be the last. A fantastic meal as always and I like to try something new. The king prawns were huge, succulent and extremely tasty. The steak pie was delicious...so full of tender steak. I can't wait to take my sister and her husband.

Can’t comment on the rooms as we didn’t stay but I can tell you that the food was wonderful. Great service and very reasonably priced… The Sunday lunch menu was great!!! Lovely, thank you so much for accommodating us at the last minute. Highly recommended.

Had lunch here - food was excellent but did need to remind staff that I had ordered tge aurf and turf - not just the steak. Service was very quick.. don't know what the rooms hence the rating

Several people told us The Sally was a great experience, and they were correct. The lamb was delicious (meant to take a photo, but...) and the fish and chips were perfect. Our only suggestion is to grill the mixed veggies to add some carmelization. Staff were friendly and lovely to talk with. They have a nice selection of beers on tap. A short walk off the Hadrians Wall path but worth the stop.

The wait time for taking our order was approximately 30mins which wasn't ideal. However when the food arrived it was delicious. Just a shame that the two of the desserts weren't available and those were the ones we wanted.

Phoned to see if they had any availability and we were told there's a table available in 20min. We drove through to a pleasant village and pulled into the carpark there was plenty of space we went in and was greeted by a lovely lady and shown to our seats. Very clean and light venue we ordered the Sunday dinner I had the corn feed chicken and my lovely wife had the pork and beef we both enjoyed the meal also were pleasant surprised when we asked for mustard and it came in a little pot way better then a packet so we'll done attention to detail. we had dessert the sticky Toffee Pudding and the creme Brulee also a coffee each. Staff were great and well presented and polite 5* all the way. Will return in the future most definitely well done a very happy customer.

Since being taken over the improvement is fantastic. Excellent service, super friendly staff and amazing food. Highly recommended.

Decent food, service was quite slow

Went on Friday 24th may, never been before but I hope to go back when up that neck of the woods, food is fantastic, I got fish n chips with mushy peas, the nicest food I have had for a long time, my son got a child's portion of fish and chips and loved it, my partner got the chicken parmesan and she loved it, the place is immaculate and really nice, the staff are lovely to, Highly Highly recommend coming here you will not be disappointed as it has a good atmosphere and really well priced. Well done

Not a bad place food nice, The only negative was they had a party which went on well past 01.00am a bit inconsiderate for the guests.

Friends and I stayed here overnight as we were attending a party nearby; we also came back in a group for a late Sunday lunch the next day. I have to say that the place is an absolute gem - the accommodation is first rate (rooms are beautifully appointed and furnished, lots of lovely touches (hospitality tray includes a good coffee machine as well as tea making facilities, plus fridge containing fresh milk and good bottled water) and breakfast offered a very good choice indeed; they were able to cater well for my friend who is a coeliac vegetarian. When we came back for late Sunday lunch, we were delighted with the quality of the food and my goodness - the portions! Staff are young, very friendly and extremely professional. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

We booked The Sally to stay overnight to break up a 500 mile trip we had planned based on tripadvisor reviews for the food and rooms. Very friendly welcome on arrival to the pub. We were personally shown to our room by one of the team. The room was very nice and had a great bathroom and plenty of space. Dinner was really great with good service and great food. Prices are very fair for the quality and quantity of food. Breakfast the following morning was superb as well. Highly recommend, and also worth the short drive from the motorway to get great food.

Ate here again on Saturday night. Really can not fault this warm relaxing friendly place. Staff are very helpful as always and the food is amazing. For all you gluten free people out there the choice we have is probably one of the best I’ve been to. And I go out a lot. One other thing is it actual states on the menu what is gf and what they can do gf so it saves all that awful questioning. Thank you guys.

Popped in on Fri night whilst in Cumbria for night. Food was excellent and we both thoroughly enjoyed itI had a Greek sausage starter and pie for mains; my wife had pork souvlaki for mains and mushroom bruscetta for starter. Only two things Id comment on negatively was decor. I wlaked into an old fashioned country pub expecting exactly that and was met with an interior that reminded me of me old univ refectory from the dim n distant past Whilst the service was very good (quick and friendly), it gets on my nerves to be told by the server how wonderful my food looks. I can decide that meself. Other than those two very personal and nit-picky moans, we had a fab meal and would thoroughly recommend

The food was Exceptional, fresh ingredients, cooked well and at a very good price. The table service was prompt, professional and very pleasant. We all agreed it is now our go to place , a Huge improvement compared to the previous owner.

Just had a delicious Sunday lunch at the Sally Met with a warm friendly welcome by Tom and team in a lovely comfortable environment. 4 adults and 2 small children ( high chairs provided) Lovely relaxed atmosphere 😁 will definitely be back.

Good food awful service. Definitely waitress training required. We were there for my mums birthday and left after waiting nearly 30 minutes to order a desert and coffees when the place was as quiet. Wouldn’t go back, really disappointed.

Meal lovely, very tasty and good size portions. We had the double cheeseburger. Good quality and value. Service excellent, friendly and helpful.

Was recommended this pub by a plumber doing work on our house so although its somewhat out of our way we gave it a try. So glad we did as food and service was amazing. Lovely atmosphere. We will be returning soon. If driving their especially the dark it is very easy to drive past without seeing the pub as the neighbours hedges and tree obscure it.

Just had a takeaway lunch from The Sally and it was genuinely 10/10. Great value and the food was utterly fantastic. Been done out really nice inside and we'll be heading up ASAP for a full sit down meal.

We hadn’t been here for a while as the previous owners could be a little unfriendly. So pleased that we gave it another go. The food was delicious and the prices are reasonable. Food was well cooked and the staff were all friendly. Definitely will be back. So pleased to have somewhere like this in the area. The new owners deserve to be successful.

Just had a meal and it’s not The Sally that we’ve always enjoyed. Menu now isn't your traditional kind of food like it was. Had the stuffed mushrooms for the starter but wish i got the Pate, the cheese in the mushrooms was very strong and a lot of pesto. I then had a steak for main and at £26 would have liked a less fatty and gristly cut of meat. Onion rings were very heavy and over fried so just couldn’t manage more than one. Just didn’t enjoy the meal…. Very disappointed

Evening out with my beautiful wife while in Carlisle We found The sally via trip adviser. We came across this Restaurant from reviews.A little hideaway Pub / restaurant very nice decor modern clean and friendly staff.Menu was good value for the food we ordered was fresh and filling well prepared and very tasty. If in the area again we would definitely revisit.

Always great service and very good food- but not dinner this evening! Service was poor, took 45 minutes to deliver after order, compared to usually 20-25 minutes. Food quality was substantially poorer than previous consistent good quality. We hope this is due to temporary problems getting the operation up and running after 5 months of COVID lockdown. We will give them another opportunity in a couple of weeks, but there has to be substantial improvements to get back to the normal standards expected of this venue.

Really clean and comfortable accommodation. Great food at both dinner and breakfast. The duck was huge! Breakfast was delightful and al cooked exactly to our orders. Covid compliant. Well worth a visit.

On holiday so went with a trip advisor recommendation and glad we didGreat food and service was exceptional Our waitress was India who was warm and friendly from the moment we sat down till we left , checking in through dinner , making sure everything ok but not intrusive! Food was fresh and plentiful fish and chips lovely but need more that the Tiny pot of amazing tartare sauce ! Burger and chips got great praise from a picky teen too ! Please make sure you congratulate India for making such an impression she is a real hospitality professional !

We’ve just spent the night at The Sally. What a stunning hotel. So tastefully decorated. Beautiful touches which I suspect would be even better if it wasn’t for Covid. The room was spotlessly clean and the very large bed in Eden was extremely comfortable. All members of staff we came into contact with were very friendly and attentive. Dinner was fantastic. The chilli and garlic prawns were the best thing I’ve ever eaten. Lasagne also very good and hubby loved his duck. Breakfast was also lovely. The whole stay was incredible value for money. We will recommend and will definitely be back.

Went for my birthday, during the day while the kids were at nursery. Enjoyed the meal and the company. The hosts were great and we had a chat and a laugh with them. Just disappointed I was not there at night as a beer would have been good but had to stick to Coke Zero. The waitress was also good. I will return, maybe at night.

My friend and I stopped at this pub for food on our hadrians wall walk. Lovely food, obviously homemade. The gnocchi was excellent. The service was delivered with a smile and happy for a chat even though they were busy. Very well thought through covid 19 safety precautions in place also. I highly recommend this place.

We booked this last minute to break up a long journey and we were pleasantly surprised. The service and attention to detail were outstanding, the food was excellent and a breakfast to die for ! It’s clear the owners have really high standards, the place was so clean you could have done open heart surgery in there. The biggest surprise was the room, the furniture and decor wouldn’t be out of place in a 5 star luxury hotel and the bed....up to now the best bed I’d slept in was at the Sofitel in Montreal, the bed here has knocked it off the number one slot. I didn’t want to get up ! A really great place with friendly helpful staff. We will def be back.

My husband and I booked lunch here 2 weeks ago whilst on holiday in the Lake District. We can honestly say it’s the best meal we had all week ! My husband had the steak pie and he said it was delicious . I had the lasagne and it was as good as my own that I make . Praise indeed from me as I usually can find fault as I was once a Chef myself in a busy kitchen . The food is very well presented , piping hot and plenty of it . My husband had a chocolate dessert and I had a a speciality coffee to finish with . We felt very safe and Covid protocols are very much adhered to . Thank you for a lovely meal , we wish we lived nearer to be able to visit often ,but alas we are in Worcestershire. Hopefully if we are up to the lakes again we will certainly eat with you .Anyone reading this thinking of eating here should go ,it’s excellent and you won’t be disappointed. Well done to you all 5 * thank you .

We stayed for a night at the Sally as part of our walk on Hadrian's Wall. We were struck with the care that had gone into planning for Covid safety and the attention of the staff in making sure that visitors felt welcome as well as safe. The whole pub was extremely clean, the room was comfortable and the food was great. Particular shout out to the two women running service when we arrived on 17 September and in the evening, they were exceptional. Also, very good communication in advance from Shaun at the Sally.

We stayed at The Sally for the night en-route home from holiday, which as an excellent choice. We stayed in the small en-suite room which was ideal for our purpose. Room was spotless and by the looks of it recently decorated with excellent en-suite facilities. £82 for bed and a wonderful cooked breakfast - can't go wrong. I'd also highly recommend staying around for dinner severed in the restaurant - great food. Service was perfect with the staff being very welcoming. If you want to go walking or are taking in the Roman sites then I'd certainly recommend staying at The Sally.

This is a great place to stay, have a casual dinner and meet up with friends for a drink! What a great job the owners have done with this pub!The rooms are immaculate, the super king bed and its linens are very comfortable. The shower is really powerful and the fridge with milk and water together with coffee pods and tea bags and biscuits is very generous. Good sized TV, decent black out and a good quiet overnight stay.The staff in the bar/restaurant are wonderful - as friendly and helpful as you’ll find anywhere including bigger, fancier hotels.Four of us all enjoyed our dinner with plentiful portions of honest, high quality home cooked pub food. Breakfast was also excellent with a wide menu.The adaptations for Covid seemed very thorough including lots of sanitiser, well spaced tables, one way system, masked staff and the *best bit of all* the pager system where you push a button at your table to summon a server or the bill or a jug of iced water. Love it!!You’re not staying at The Ritz, but you will not go wrong staying here. Easy 5 stars.

We stayed overnight at the Sally to break up our journey. We were lucky enough to enjoy the late September sun in the outside area on arrival. The service was absolutely excellent, and India especially was extremely helpful, including calling us before our arrival to check if we wanted to eat in the restaurant, ensuring we got a table. The room was lovely and the food in the evening was fantastic. Would recommend the tuna and half a crispy duck. We would definately stay again. Thank you to the whole team for such a great experience.

We all agreed that this was the best meal out we’d had in ages! Food was sooooo delicious. Every course tasted amazing. Lots of flavours . The staff were really nice too, and we all felt very safe. We will definitely be returning here.

We stayed for 3 nights and ate in every evening. There were 3 of us, including 2 Vegans. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Vegan milk and yoghurt were available and special dishes were prepared to supplement those on the menu. The food was excellent as were our rooms. The highlight though was the helpfulness and thoughtfulness of the staff which made for a really good stay.

A beautiful place with very friendly staff and excellent food . Very safe for Covid 19. Staff wear masks , sanitiser on tables and a pager when you require service.One way system in place. Comfy seating area to relax. Great area outside to eat too. cant wait to go again.,

We came early evening for dinner. Very organised re COVID, friendly and helpful staff. We had twice baked cheese souffle for starter, then one of us fish and chips and the other choux gnocchi with feta and roasted vegetables. All really nice, very nicely cooked and presented, lots of good flavours. Pistachio and cream meringue for dessert. All delicious!

Attended today for lunch, the place is very clean and inviting. Health and safety very much in place hand sanitizer as you go in and on table, tables spaced out etc, one way system in place. Buzzer for the table so you can buzz for serve, bill etc which is also very good. The place wasn’t very busy in fact there were only 3 table being served while we were in. Lady took our drinks order and off she went..... we buzzed for them to take food order she came and took food order and realized we still hadn’t had our drinks...... Starter came...... took some time for the main .....to be informed they had over done the burger and sorry for the delay. The mains came out I got fish and chips and normally fish food be piping hot due to batter but it wasn’t that hot obviously due to waiting for my husbands second burger ........ ordered coffees and ice cream my hot chocolate came, ice cream for my husband arrived ...... no coffee for him had to ask for it as it had been forgotten. All in all considering it wasn’t busy i think the serve needs attention

Excellent- we really can’t fault here at all. The food was the best we have had in a long time and the service was second to none.

Had a great meal here tonight. Service was great. COVID-19 care was done thoughtfully and the area was clear and clean. Food was excellent we had The steak Pie, The grilled Tuna, Lamb Shank and cheese soufflé all delicious and served to the table together. To make things easier they had a device on the table where you could call service or ask for the bill. This meant the evening was very relaxed and we were able to have a great catch up.

After a (very) long first day walking Hadrian’s Wall the Sally was the perfect rest stop. The room was fantastic: large, clean, comfortable, brand new decor. The staff were extremely welcoming and we had a great meal in the restaurant. We’d definitely recommend it without hesitation and would stay there again.

The staff make this place. I have been 3 times in the last few weeks - once for drinks whilst cycling, secondly for an evening meal with a friend and then today for lunch with my Grandparents. The first 2 times we were served by a young girl - well a lot younger than me, long brown hair.... I wish I’d asked her name so I could be more specific - she was brilliant - a huge asset to the restaurant. Today we were served by a man who was rushed off his feet but was so pleasant and attentive to my elderly grandparents - really appreciated, food was great too!

We've been staying nearby in Brampton (me, my hubby and 10m old baby) and wanted somewhere for a nice meal.The online pre booking system was great and very easy to use.The pub is beautifully presented and very spacious. It's clear they are doing everything they can to keep people safe, including the very well organised key ring system for using the toilet. There are markings and signs everywhere and hand gel on every table.The manager welcomed us in and couldn't do enough for us. The small pager type device on the table to request service, bill or water for the table was genius. As soon as we pressed it he was over in a flash.The food was excellent. It was a reduced menu but some very good options. I had the chilli prawns as a main course and they were just beautiful. My husband had the steak pie which he really enjoyed.Granted it was quiet when we went (early evening) but as it got busier service was still excellent.Definitely recommend for anybody visiting this lovely part of the UK.

Stayed one night in a beautiful, modern room. We didn’t eat but had a few drinks in the bar. The restaurant/bar area was lovely and cosy. Staff really welcoming. Would totally recommend.

Visited here with the family today for lunch. Food was excellent and the manager knew all about gluten free so I felt really comfortable ordering. Children were very well catered for and made welcome. Lovely atmosphere and very well aware of COVID procedures. I would highly recommend.

Arrived home after a wonderful much needed break at this fantastic establishment. After making a ‘delivery’ here a while ago, the wife and myself have been eager to return to sample the great food and excellent hospitality from all of the staff.We arrived on Saturday afternoon and immediately felt comfortable with the Covid operation in place, we have eaten in a few restaurant’s and found systems often non existent or confusing and badly planned. However on arrival, the manager and his staff quickly made us feel at home and showed us how to order drinks, food and the clever toilet procedure designed to make distancing very easy.We stayed in the ‘Eden’ suite, very clean, spacious, the bed is huge, and very comfortable.We ate in the restaurant, I had steak, cooked to perfection and Mrs had Tuna, which again was great. Although busy, the tables were set in such a way that distancing was not a problem. The waiting staff worked tremendously hard, the food was served hot and very tasty. A nice touch from the chef, who passed to make sure everybody was ok. The pager operation on each table works really well, so instead of unnecessary trips to the bar, the staff tend to you when you press a button.We had another drink in the bar before we went to bed, there was a great atmosphere in here, very friendly locals.Fantastic night’s sleep.Breakfast the next morning again was exceptional, I had a full English breakfast and Mrs devoured eggs royale. Again the staff while not at all intrusive, always popped over to make sure everything was fine.Everything in Sally is done to a very high standard, the tables, the decoration, the rooms, no expense has been spared and nothing is too much trouble for the managers and their staff.The cost for the room and the food is amazingly reasonable, we left totally refreshed, totally full and totally satisfied, can’t wait to visit again.

The Sally is a small piece of pure luxury that I would heartily recommend anyone visiting this beautiful area to indulge in. When entering this picturesque venue we felt welcomed and spoilt at the same time. The bar staff greeted us like old friends and ensured that we had everything we needed. The room had lots of extra special extras, which added to the experience, and was decorated and presented to an excellent standard. Food was also exceptional with the breakfast being the best we have experienced in any setting. I would like to express my warmest congratulations to the owners of The Sally who clearly love the place and have nurtured and cherished it with no expense spared. This is cleverly passed on to visitors such as myself through the dedication and 'Team Sally' staff who do The Sally proud. I wish them all the best for the 'new normal'and look forward to a return visit soon.
