St Nicholas Arms in Carlisle

Had a couple of afternoon drinks here yesterday then returned for dinner at night lovely clean pub good food and friendly and attentive staff. Was allowed to use pub carpark while staying in the b&b next door. Would definitely return.

Unhelpful, unresponsive and rude staff. I got two parking tickets after being parked in their car park, just because I wanted to eat in their pub. Warning all- don’t fall for the scam. ⚠️⚠️⚠️

I can't comment on food as we walked out before ordering. Small about 5 foot skinny man brown short spikey hair foreign accent no idea maybe italian who knows not English who works behind the bar his attitude is appalling. Shouldn't be in the job he must surely be the owner otherwise why on earth is a man like this even working in a front line job with the public. When we went in he was having a fight with an older couple waiting at the bar it was day time there was noone else there except us. They were arguing with each other think it was because he short changed the man and was having none of it when man challenged him. Then to serve us. I had lost an item the night before as had been drinking in the hotel and spent alot of money with friends behind the bar. I asked him nicely if it had been handed in he replied very cheekily it is not my job to check for lost items. I only asked him to check if it had been handed in. Its not his job to check lost property what exactly is his job to serve and be nice to customers who are coming in to spend money on food and drinks. But all he can reply is its not my job to check lost property. I said I'm only asking you nicely if an item had been found to which he replied if you not happy please get out. We got over that sat down at a table with the menu we picked up from the bar. Sat for about 15 minutes and noone came near us to take our order or advise how the system worked. This man is appalling to be front of house. I can only assume he must own it if not the owners need to get rid of him as he is loosing you custom. In the very short time we were in he was arguing with both sets of customers at the bar. I've never came across a man as rude in my life as he was in his job role. Therefore would not recommend this establishment purely on him. Menu looked great too and we were in for 3 courses and drinks. It wasn't busy but clearly he didn't want the custom for food we must've been an inconvenience.

This pub now seems to have combined with Alex pizza place - I had pizza and hubby had rigatoni amatriciana- we both thought they were good and a great price at 11 Euro each.

A smart, clean, friendly gastro pub, serving good quality, freshly prepared food. Not fantastic on the veggie option front, but we managed. The dishes we chose seemed a bit heavy on the cream, but very tasty. The prices were reasonable, and with wine we spent about £35 each. Lovely helpful staff too.

The food was absolutely delicious and the service was amazing. The lady who served us was so attentive and polite. We really enjoyed our meal there.

Such a warm and pleasant atmosphere - much welcomed after a long hike. Food is pub, comfortable food. Our server two days in a row, Mika, was awesome - very sweet.

Tried to go to toilet before buying drink and was chucked out by unpleasant man, absolutely no need to behave like that. Will not return or recommend.

The food was absolutely amazing. The bar is run by two brothers who are absolutely fantastic really nice guys make you feel so welcome. Would highly recommend. They need to charge more for their food because it really is amazing!!

Good service, pub food but overpriced.

I dont often write reviews but in couldnt not in this case. A group of us came here tonight for my nieces birthday and the food was delicious. We all throughly enjoyed every last mouthful, worth every penny! The man on the bar and the chef were very friendly and welcoming. They even played and sang happy birthday and brought a cheesecake over with a candle in for my niece. Would definitely recommend a visit here and I can't wait to visit again. Thank you all.

Came here with my fiance and daughter on a saturday for lunch. Greeted immediately on entering the pub and we were taken to our table. The menu was great plenty to choose from I had the prawn starter and my partner the calamari it was so fresh full of flavour, our mains I had sea bass with new potatoes with capers and bacon the fish melted in your mouth absolutely fantastic, my partner had the seafood pizza he said was one best pizzas he's had in a while. My little girl went for sausage mash and peas. The service was excellent couldn't do enough for you , was our first time here won't be the last. Quality restaurant food in a pub relaxed atmosphere 👌 Was great value for money we shared a bottle of pinot and then had another round of drinks afterwards and my daughter had ice cream was around £89

The food here is amazing and so reasonably priced. Highly recommend especially if you like Italian.

Had our 3rd meal there last night since the New Year. Fantastic, friendly staff and just amazing food at great value, love this place.

Popped in here on New Year's Day with my better half for a bar meal ... never been before but WOW .. we will be back. We had 2 absolutely delicious meals. Beautifully cooked, great portions, great prices Absolutely recommended 😋.

Family of 14 came for Christmas dinner.it has only been under new management a few months and they did absolutely brilliant.our dinner was all fresh and piping hot.service was amazing.we will definitely be back to try some different meals.and hopefully get booked for next Christmas for a table of 24.well done and thank you.good luck for the future x

Had xmas day dinner, the food was delicious and hot & good portion sizes ,it was very busy but the service was fantastic the waiter couldn't of been more helpful, will definitely be back.

Food is banging 10/10 the guys that work there and own it are so friendly make you feel at home and are always happy to help. The cheff the main man is top man and the best cheff about highly recommend this place

Went here in the summer - No real ale, even though it was advertised, toilets stank, and few of the customers outside were very dodgy and acting aggressively. Food was apparently fine but expensive for what it was (one of my friends ate there while I was there). We moved on after one drink and didn't return even though we were staying nearby. Advice - give the place a miss.

We stopped at Carlisle on way home from family wedding looking for something to eat spotted the St Nicholas arms we were received by a fine young man who escorted us to a table we ordered our food I had the steak pie my wife had chicken parmo and my son the rump steak they were all superb my compliments to the chef!! The service was quick maybe because they werent busy but still served with a smile GREAT !If we ever make it back this way I'll certainly pay another visit ..

Alex's Pasta Bar has moved out of the Town center, Menu slightly reduced, but the quality is still the same.

Beautiful place to sit and read a book with a coffee/coke and have a meal out with people. Amazing place, amazing food and amazing service! Would recommend to anyone and everyone.

The salmon I had was delicious and the staff is very nice . They make you feel very welcome! ... I've been there twice and I'll be back!

It was like someone put a group of schoolchildren in charge of a pub. Absolutely appalling at every turn— every employee we interacted with was incompetent in a new and 'fun' way. Felt like we had to coach them through providing a basic dinner service, and even then the food was disappointing at best. Seems like they're actively trying to go out of business.

A group of us meets up every Tuesday at different pubs, this is one of our favourites. We've eaten here once, and the food was lovely.

After walking out of another establishment in the town centre, for lack of any service, we decided to walk down and try here for food. From the moment we stepped inside we were treated like old friends. Great crack, brilliant service and the food was amazing. We will definitely be returning, hopefully becoming regulars.

We stayed Carlisle for three nights as we began our Hadrian's Wall journey. Because of our ages (combined age of nearly 300 for four of us), we didn't have the energy to go exploring too far from home, so we enjoyed two meals at this fine pub. The food was terrific and the service was exceptional. Had we not enjoyed it, we would have found somewhere else!

Sunday traditional lunch was so good I'll be going back next time I'm in Carlisle.

A lovely pub with nice customers

Really good bar meal, very well kept pint, very clean and great service. We had a 90 year old in our party and the bar staff kindly turned the music down so she could hear the conversation. Can highly recommend this pub.

we had lunch here today and the food was delicious, josh made the experience even better , great attention to customer service, we will be back varied menu and fresh food , try the pizza its a wow , i had gammon and it wasnt a problem to swap the chips for new potatoes , real gem thank you

Went for lunch and it was totally unexpected for a 'pub'. We had graat food, and the staff were very attentive. We will highly recommend it 👌

We went here for a meal while in Carlisle. The food was good, the halloumi sticks were the best that I have had! The staff were nice and friendly, and they even had vegan wine (Three Mills). The only criticism would be that there weren't a lot of veggie options on the menu, although as it was a small menu it is not surprising. Overall, we had a nice experience.

Nice pub. Good food selection and nice beers. Good service. Outdoor space out the front but it's next to a busy road. Parking available. No baby changing space but they let us use an upstairs room to change the little one. Good pub.

The food was truly scrumptious, it ain't scran, it's better then that!. It filled and satisfied by hunger and I'm left wanting more. The cook is amazing and after a few words it's clear he's happy here, happy chef is brilliant food.. Come test for yourself.

Living near to this pub/ restaurant I have been a number of times. Generally their service is great and they are always accommodating. However, since they have introduced a new chef I have found the food has gone downhill. Last time I visited their menu was in the midst of changing but we did not realise this meant our food would appear different to its descriptions. When our complaint was brought up the staff honestly just tried to quash our issues by saying that the chef was very sought after and “people would queue out the door for him”. I’m glad they think highly of their kitchen staff but unfortunately you’re establishment is a pub and not a Michelin star restaurant. You need to evaluate your choice to please the larger market around you in Carlisle. This isn’t London. I miss your old chef and if the kitchen staff changes I will be back in a heartbeat for the beautiful fresh fish and chips you used to serve.

I'm too old for student pubs, but I felt very very old after calling here for something to eat on Saturday afternoon. Food is really excellent. Chef is doing a huge amount of work, on his own, and producing good food. If I was opening a restaurant in Carlisle I would definitely be interested in acquiring his expertise, he is underrated here. Bar girls and student patrons are pretty much interchangeable from what I saw, lots of cocktails, flashing of money and competing to see who could swear the most. If you are a rich student I'm sure you would fit right in here, and you might find a 'partner' for the evening too. Not for me I'm afraid. Don't take your wife or GF unless she is a student. Oh, and although they advertise real ales.....I saw none.

Stayed in the B&B next door to the pub with work and ate in the pub every night during our stay. Friendly family run which serves beautiful fresh home made food. Would highly recommend.

What a find ,just around the corner from a lovely Guest house on a short break. Friendly, Hard working staff ,Great banter and Great service .Food absolutely lovely ,Hot,tasty,lots of and presented well and delicious in taste. So took my parents for dinner here my Dad really wanted Cumberland sausage they did do it but with mash and greens be he wanted chips it was not a problem for them to do it and the portion size was more than enough for 2. I had the steak with the peppercorn sauce and the sauce is probably the best peppercorn sauce I have ever had. Would recommend to anybody who is looking for good food at a reasonable price. If I did have 1 recommendation I would ask if they could do smaller portions for the elderly.

Friends belated birthday party venue. Buffet food was out of this world - hot and cold food, stupendous cake and beautiful birthday cake. Staff were fabulous and very helpful and welcoming. Highly recommended
