It's a nice little restaurant and staff were lovely. Started out great with haggis bon bons which were delicious however there were several things not on the menu (early on the Saturday evening) and the other things we did have were bland, greasy and really disappointing.

We love this place. Been a few times now and the food does not disappoint. You get plenty in a portion, we ordered 4 plates between 2 of us, we were absolutely stuffed. The cocktails are really nice and although we couldn't fit one in, the puds looked amazing. Throughly recommend a visit here.

Travelled here from Cheshire for a couple of days as we love carlisle, sadly medusa, the awesome Mexican over the way from this has closed down :-( High expectations for shabby! Not met! Seated late, lots of tables free but chose to squeeze us in next to other couples. I told them earlier in the day it was my partners birthday, no mention, nothing on her behalf, very sad. Food, mediocre at best, bang bang cauliflower, smaller pieces cooked well, larger bits raw. Just wasn't a good experience!

Lukewarm service, and felt like we needed to hurry up and leave. The servers seemed bored and indifferent. The food was tasty, well spiced but would benefit from tapas pricing to allow for more variety on the table. £13 for one 'tapas' dish doesn't make for sharing at all and kind of kills the whole 'tapas' thing. Murdered further by the indifferent, bored service. Food should be about passion. Not here.

Me and my friends have lived in carlisle for just over 3 years now and we were desperate for somewhere new that isn't overly priced with tiny portions. I am happy to say that we loved every bit of our visit, we were kindly greeted by two ladys and treated to a lovely 80s type aesthetic. Also the FOOD! Oh my god the food....you can tell the chef uses quality over quantity. We will definetely be visiting here again <3

Where to start? With the positive...service with a smile and now the negatives... cliched decor with touches of offensive sexism, inconsistent presentation and awkward serving dishes, unimaginative menu and since when was falafel a tapas item - I'm being generous when I say falafel, where was the sesame, where was the seasoning? Pea shoots do not equal a salad. Last but not least we were given TWELVE individual single use plastic cups for a dine in experience. Wake up! Ho hum when needs must!

A delightful friendly cafe, with the added bonus of being dog friendly. The food was delicious too! We arrived about 2.30pm and the staff were so friendly and accomodating, asking us if we needed a water bowl for our dog. We had the Shabby burger, goats cheese toastie and the christmas toastie, all the food was hot and delicious. This was then followed by brownies and the best ice cream I have tasted for some time. The cafe is also licensed, I can thoroughly recommend the Shabby Scholar.

No wonder you are always fully booked! Shabby Scholar has to be one of the best places to eat and socialise in Carlisle. My cousin and I brought our second cousin from Italy here and my cousins 1 year old son. From the moment we entered we were greeted with open arms, the staff really couldn’t have been more helpful in seating us and the baby. We were served quickly and our drinks were brought out very promptly. Food was perfect! Thanks for the immaculate service. ❤️

We went to the shabby scholar for some lunch asked for gluten free soup and chips, after a couple of spoons of the soup Which tasted awful thought it wasn’t right so I left it, we left, and after about 20 mins I was poorly so I knew I had been glutened which leaves me very sick and we had a long journey home by train hence our day out on Carlisle was spoilt. However my husband had no complaints he enjoyed his lunch.

Had the halloumi fries, brie balls and tofu sliders. The food was really good and one of the best halloumi fries I have ever had, as I normally will have hard fries as halloumi goes hard very quickly but these came out really soft and with the taste of halloumi which was brilliant. The only down side is the price which I though was a bit overpriced but the food was very good, definitely would recommend if you are vegetarian/vegan as there are lots of options on the menu! Food came out fast and well presented as well.

I recommend coming here with a group of people so you can order a lot of dishes off the amazing tapas menu to try everything. The food is always delicious, and the service is great. They bring the food out hot and when it's ready, so it's great for everyone to dive in between conversation. We tried eight dishes between the four of us and the portions were perfect. The extensive cocktail menu is just as good as the food menu and requires several visits to try everything they offer. The best thing to start with on the menu is the homemade nachos! They change the menu every so often as well which helps keeps the place exciting and always worth coming back to.

Having done research prior to the Shabby Scholar's we knew that they advertised themselves to be dog friendly. When we arrived the waitress told us she would just clear the table for our party which included one very well behaved dog. We waited outside. A few minutes later the waitress came outside and told us we cannot stay for lunch after all. She said it was the policy to ask every other customer if it was OK for a dog to come in. Absolutely ridiculous, never hear anything like it. Completely false advertising as it certainly is not dog friendly.

We booked this restaurant as a large party (choir and friends) so the menu was fixed but there was a massive choice. Unfortunately we were not given a list of choices and how much food was coming before it was put on the table. Excellent, tasty food too but so much that it was impossible to know how to control the intake. Despite the menu being fixed and having booked well in advance we had to wait about 1 hour for the first morsels. That’s not very good service. In the end someone had to go begging for a taster! Not for big parties I think.
