The Ryder Grill in Birmingham

Second time having the Sunday roast here. The first time was really good that’s why we wanted to return for a special occasion, and it did unfortunately disappoint. Food’s good, as expected, good selection. But the let down is the service. There are way too many tables for the staff to provide an adequate level of quality service. We had to get up and order our coffee and get them to clear our plate, as our mains plates were still on the table when returning back from the dessert run. We were also the first few people in the restaurant but got sat right at the back by a wall. It is quite poor service for the price you pay.

They served sunday lunch, with BOILED chicken, (NOT roasted). Boiled veg way too long, (not steamed), no flavour. Very watery thin tasteless gravy (or maybe was dishwater?). The most bland food ever. The boiled white chicken taste like dry wood. No seasoning at all, no salt, pepper, no butter or oil was used during cooking or provided. The food servers/waiters/whatever did not want to be there. It was way too much effort on a Sunday after a Saturday night out. They were unfriendly, cold, could not be bothered, did not want to serve. Probably ashamed to dish up the food, it was so dire. The staff were cold, stiff and unfriendly. Recommendation: This place is using some past glory to sell overpriced and tasteless food with bad service. Avoid.

I had breakfast and dinner here. So will review these separately: Breakfast: The breakfast here is really expensive for what is essentially a buffet sat around. The coffee is filter in a pot and if you want a latte or something like this then you have to pay £5.35 for the drink on top of the breakfast price. It’s not a large drink either, or a good one. There weren’t any vegan options out, asides from fruit or toast. So I had to ask for a vegan yogurt and some vegan sausages. Otherwise the buffet contained things you’d have in a full English such as bacon sausages eggs etc. The bread was SO bad, I can’t believe they’d serve such cheap sandwich bread. You’re paying about £18.50 for so little. I tried some tinned peach and watermelon, which was fine. I’d rather pay for an a la carte breakfast (even at 18.50 and have nice bread and freshly cooked items). Having everything sat around in containers and pre made with terrible coffee is just a joke for such a ‘nice’ establishment. We had to queue to get in, queue to check out the containers which were full of greasy items sat around. There were no dairy free or vegan pastries, which they thought there might be (but both days there weren’t). A couple of the waitresses were complaining here and there, which was just awkward to listen to as I tried to enjoy my underwhelming over priced breakfast. I would give this place 1/5 stars for breakfast. Dinner: The buffet did not contain vegan options, but they do have a vegan menu! The dishes lack protein, for eg they do a curry with cauliflower - why not use chickpeas? Tofu? Tempeh? But, at least they do have this. If you don’t want the buffet, then you can use the money towards a la carte. On one night we had the buffet, and it was all ok. I guess I went at the wrong time as the food wasn’t topped up, so I had the scraps of a dish that were left but the flavours were nice and the quality - if not a little over done by being sat there heated. The other night we ordered a la carte and waited an HOUR for our food and twenty five minutes for a drink. We then were told we couldn’t pay at our table so queued at the entrance to pay, we stood waiting for about 15 minutes and eventually got to pay. They didn’t care about the service or our experience. The food was 4/5 stars, but let down by the long wait and service. The prices are expensive, so the service needs to be there.

Fantastic offering on buffet. Mia made excellent recommendations. She’s an excellent addition to the Ryder grill team. All the food is super fresh and area nice and clean.

The restaurant was very busy because of the British Masters but staff were always courteous and available to help. Special mention to Jessica who served us for all three days. Was always helpful, professional and courteous. Well done.

Amazing experience from start to finish. Service was second to none and the food was delicious. We Gad the a la Carte on the first night and it was outstanding and well worth the money, specially the prawns and Duck egg starter then the pork belly and lobster mains. Great flavours. Visited for Sunday lunch for my mother-in-law’s 91st birthday. Our initial experience wasn’t positive as a frosty-faced lady told us that we couldn’t sit down as we were early. We asked if we could just go and sit at our table and wait until our booked time and we were told No. We had to go back to the bar and there was no flexibility for an elderly lady who finds it difficult to walk and stand. Someone who’s friendlier and more helpful would be better on the restaurant reception. The food was varied and of good quality. However, the restaurant manager didn’t take our constructive feedback well and just said he would pass it on. The wine is very expensive and it’s ridiculous to add a hefty service charge on to the bill at a buffet restaurant. There are much better restaurants around for Sunday lunch at a lower or similar price point.

Service was great, staff were amazing and helpful. I had the buffet as part of the package, but I was very disappointed with the vegetarian selection. It has been years since I have been to a place that serves just vegetable and nothing else. I was able to eat potatoes and carrots. Very disappointed. In this day and age there is so much choice for vegetarians but it was seriously lacking here.

This is a carvery style restaurant. The starters on offer were a bit unusual, quiche, pasta coleslaw, more like salad bar. Mains were fine, usual carvery standard. Desserts were surprisingly nice, the key lime pie was delicious. Service was great, couldn’t have been better. But what let it down, for a restarting a nice hotel, was the restaurants itself. It had a sort of canteen feel. Disappointing as was hoping for something a bit more special.

We were eating here as part of a stay and play deal where food was included. The menu and buffet looked great, but due to my allergies I had to order from a menu due to cross contamination. I made sure the item I ordered would not be charged extra… but when the bill came, the full price was added. When we queried this issue, the manager stated that it was our fault and that we were told we would be charged in too. This was simply not the case. Service was also slow, drinks took a while to arrive and we felt shoved into a corner. I will only be eating here tomorrow night as I have already paid for it… but I will never come back here again

Went for Sunday Lunch buffet. Lots of nice choices and overall the food was tasty

We booked Sunday lunch as it was my birthday and our wedding anniversary, we were not told that the star Sunday lunch price was higher than usual because it was father,s day. We were not there for Father’s Day and the food was no different than usual. Actually we were very disappointed as we are both allergic to Garlic which I informed them on booking. We were told after sitting down that we could not eat the roast potatoes or gravy as they contained garlic. Why wasn’t this dealt with before arrival? There was very little of the main menu we could eat, so not only was it more expensive but we were left with mains that could fit on a tea plate. We will never go again, £40 each for an ordinary meal that was disappointing and a cheap apology from the belfry. All it said was they were sorry no one told us it was Father’s Day. I was 66 yesterday not 6. A lot of my birthdays have fallen on Father’s Day but why does that matter? June

I give it 2 stars because the food was good (even thought overpriced), however everything else was awful. The service was slow and the lady who took our orders was nothing but rude, an hour after she took the order we had only had some of the starters and no sign of the mains. When we complained she said that they have had many orders come through at the same time ?! After we finished our meals we must have asked for the bill 3 times and they hadn't taken off the £100 deposit we paid to book the table. We raised the issue and the lady said she had taken the deposit off, she checked carefully and only £1 had been taken off the bill. At no point she apologised or tried to offer anything for the slow service or the bill mistake. Will not be coming back here to have ridiculously overpriced food and bad service thanks.

Excellent food and great service from staff. I had one of the vegetarian options which was absolutely delicious. Great to see decent vegetarian choices when visiting a grill style restaurant. Menu is really varied with good options for nibbles/starters and a delicious dessert menu. We also had breakfast here the next day as we were staying in the hotel. Breakfast was great with a choice of hot buffet options including vegetarian choices, cereals, fruit, yoghurt and pastries etc. Not the first time we’ve been here and won’t be the last. We were served by Hannah who was very attentive, thank you!

Wonderful family dining experience at the Ryder Grill this evening. The food was excellent; so much choice for both us adults and children. Phoebe P was just lovely! So attentive, polite, friendly. Thank you so much Phoebe-you made sure that we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening-thank you :)

Had a really enjoyable Birthday meal at the Ryder Grill, went for the A La Carte menu and everything was really good. Many thanks to Larissa who also went out of her way to look after our table and provided a complimentary dessert and glass of Prosecco for my Birthday!

Lovely meal with lots of choice, made even better by our amazing waiter Sam who was very helpful, attentive and charming.

We have just spent a night at the belfry Hotel and used the ryder grill twice whilst here. The buffet dinner was lovely,plenty to chose from and excellent service from our waitress Larisa she was amazing and looked after us so well. We also had breakfast ,I think this is one of the best buffet breakfasts I've ever had. All the food was so fresh ,hot and tasted amazing. Service again was the best nothing too much trouble. Thankyou so much

Great atmosphere, outstanding service and amazing sunday lunch

I am so happy that we chose the Belfry. The Ryder Grill had such a lovely and festive atmosphere and had a great lay out. It was absolutely magical. I chose the tandoori cauliflour and it was delicious ... compliments to the chef. The kids buffet has it's own section of the restaurant and my son who is usually a fussy eater was in awe. Our waiter Alex was well mannered and efficient. When I made him aware I was a vegetarian he made me aware of the vegan menu and brought this out more or less straight away. He was also keen to explain local activities in the area. His communication skills with both my 6 year old son and I were great !! The lady with the cool glasses (didn't catch her name) was also lovely and came over to our table to chat to us and made us feel very welcome. She informed us about activities on site and directed us accordinly. We felt welcomed from start to finish. Thank you to everybody at the Ryder.

I attended a Christmas party here, the service was great. The Christmas dinner was really good in comparison to mothers I have attended this festive season. The size of the portion was adequate. The table service was great, the staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. A rate service. The overall ambience of the venue is great, the lobby bar is really good, and they had a live band playing after the meal, which played into the early hours.

The food was exceptional and the portion sizes were just right. The ambience was lovely, making it a perfect dining spot. It does attract a few famous people as I witnessed today, lucky day for me today

Superb food and service as always.

Fabulous experience overall. Only downside was the level of the background music. So loud that conversation with friends was problematic especially in the lounge/bar.

Came on a B&B and Spa/Buffet package and the first night (sunday 22nd Oct)the buffet was excellent - good choice for starters, mains and desserts. Monday - different ball game - only 2 choices as far as I could tell for mains and the korean beef was dry and needed a sauce. The pear dessert was dry and inedible - service was good and friendly - the starters were mainly salad based so hard to ruin - but would have not been pleased to have made an effort to eat here on the monday unless I was already staying - an anomaly in what was otherwise a good stay - breakfast and setting both good.

I had a fantastic roast meal at The Belfry! The roast was cooked to perfection, with tender meat and flavorful vegetables. The ambiance added to the experience, making it a delightful dining choice. I'll definitely be back for more!

The buffet was delicious- plenty of choice and lots to try. Labelling was really clear, so we knew exactly what we were eating. Ben our waiter was excellent- made great recommendations, was attentive and responsive. We would certainly come back!

Myself and my wife stayed over at the Belfry on a Sunday and decided once again to have dinner in the Ryder Grill due to many previous favourable experiences in this restaurant. Once again both the service and food was excellent and on this occasion we were looked after by the delightful JESS. The restaurant was busy as were all the staff however JESS ensured that everything was perfect and her knowledge of both the food and wine was first rate. JESS is an accomplished member of the team. Her appearance is impeccable and her stance and manner coupled with her attention to detail is nothing short of outstanding. The evening was made extra special as we got to meet DARREN MOORE who is the Ryder Grill Evening Manager. Even though the restaurant was bang in the middle of service he came to our table and spoke with both myself and my wife. DARREN is extremely professional and It's evident that the high caliber of all his staff is primarily due to DARRENS MOORS level of leadership and direction as he's very much hands on and leads from the front. I can honestly say that our evening at the Ryder Grill Restaurant was absolutely fantastic. The staff, food, service, cleanliness and the overall experience was one of the best we have ever had.

Dress code has gone out of the window. Jeans. T shirts. Trainers. Shorts. Shirts outside trousers all now acceptable. Only thing not lowered is the price. Very disappointed.

Lovely breakfast, great selection of continental and full English and plenty of tea and coffee. Samantha and Arek always make us so welcome and the other staff are very attentive and efficient regardless of how busy they are

Sadly, disappointing . We chose a la carte. The fish was dry and over cooked. We sent it back only to be told it was ‘ personal preference’ . Well it is true, my preference is for moist fish. The replacement meal was the stone bass and that was cooked to perfection, but sadly the pasta that came with it was cold. My partners food was cold too and we had to send that back. The replacement was fine, but the attitude of the manager was quite unpleasant. Certainly felt the customer care was lacking. They did adjust the bill once we asked them too but it was done in quite a dismissive way that made us feel uncomfortable.

Came for a lovely couple’s stay at the belfry, we had dinner included in our stay. Dinner was delightful our host carol showed us to our table and our waiter jensen looked after us all night. He was very friendly and polite, they had steak on there buffet which was very tasty. A massive thank you for a lovely experience can’t wait to return. X

Excellent buffet service. Ideal for large groups.

The restaurant design and decor is an unusual mix of styles that doesn’t work that well They couldn’t find our reservation which had been confirmed twice which was a poor start. Front of House was not particularly helpful or polite. You have a choice of buffet or a la carte. We wanted a freshly cooked meal so went for the a la carte We both ordered scallops which were barely warm Main course sea trout and sea bass. Both fish dishes overcooked and again only warm. Very disappointing especially considering the premium prices of the dishes. The serving staff were lovely and with the restaurant being quite busy including some leading golfers we chose not to make a fuss If this has been out golf Club we would have sent the meals back. We had a nice lunch in the Brabazon bar and snacked in Sam’s Bar which was good We will avoid the restaurant on future visits

Excellent service and buffet really good value all of our party enjoyed the evening the service received from Larisa was exemplary attentive, helpful,bubbly and friendly without being obtrusive in any way making the whole experience even more enjoyable. After food wandered into the bar area to chill and listen to live music just rounded off the evening

Good at best average but for the price quality of food is poor. We also had breakfast and restaurant that only offers cheap white bread and brown bread says it all given an average cafe has better options.

Ate from buffet, choice limited. Almost everything had a dressing/sauce on it. Very little choice of vegetables. Breakfast fruit selection limited, great if you eat 4 types of melon. Other fruit in juice or syrup. Cooked breakfast had a better selection.

I had a three course Sunday lunch here with members of my family. The food was amazing! It was self service for all three courses, which meant you could have as much or as little as you wanted. Each course had it's own area and was clean and tidy. There was plenty of choice for each course, and each dish was labelled well. Each item I chose was very tasty. The staff who greeted us were helpful and friendly. A lovely, pleasant and polite server (Jo) came to the table for drinks orders. Drinks were brought to the table within a reasonable time. There were plenty of staff around to clear tables, without us feeling watched or rushed. I also made use of the toilet facilities which were clean and had plenty of hand sanitiser, soap and hand lotion. Overall, I would say the restaurant had a lovely ambience. Lunch was good value for money and I would recommend it.

Sunday lunch at the Ryder Grill is excellent value with plenty of choice for all dietary requirements. The restaurant is invariably full and there is a lively atmosphere. Arek and his team are welcoming and solicitous. We also enjoyed a tasty breakfast with the same attentive service in the Ryder Grill after a recent overnight stay. Sam B. in The Spa deserves recognition for her wonderful manicure and facial treatments. It’s a real treat to go to The Belfry, so much to do and enjoy.

I dined here with my boyfriend on the 17th and 18th of February, we had Josh look after us for the dinner and he was great, we thought the service was brilliant :) food is also very good, we had the buffet and compared to a lot of other buffets where the food can suffer in quality - in here everything I had from the buffet I would have paid for individually in a restaurant. A very disappointing experience. Booked Al a carte and paid a £40 non refundable deposit to eat in the Belfry restaurant. It says the dress code is collar/smart casual. We ended up sharing our expensive meal with 150 Buffett diners on £27 vouchers and dressed from casual to joggers and t shirts! Was like a Sunday at Toby Carvery! We had such a lovely few days at The Belfry , the highlight of which was the food in The Ryder Grill. The waiting staff were really attentive, and would like to mention Amaya, Alex, Hannah and June who all were fabulous at each of our dinners.

The 3 course carvery was very good quality and choice. Service was ok until I asked for a coffee at the end of the meal which seemed an inconvenience to the waitress and was served in a mug with no milk. Atmosphere was ok nothing special. Main issue was the price of the drinks, we had one large glass of wine (£15.80) and one glass of lime n soda (£4.50) which came to £20.30 and they even added a 10% surcharge. I didn't think it was going to be cheap but those prices are ridiculously overpriced.
