Disgusting customer service tried to get a voucher for my parents and I was told that they were too busy to issue . The restaurant was totally empty and the owner was upstairs . The young lad had to text the staff upstairs and they said they were too busy to issue a £150 voucher for my parents . At this time there were 2 people in the bar and not a single person in the restaurant.

Disappointing lunch. Chose calves liver with mash and bacon. Was served two very small pieces of liver and overdone bacon on a mound of mash potato. Also bar staff took three attempts to get a lager shandy correct after mixing it using soda rather than lemonade. Prices are expensive too.

I arrived at the Running Mare with a group of Ramblers. The leader had booked tables. When we arrived we discovered we had tables in a large shed at the rear of the pub. We arrived at 1.15pm. We were given menus and drinks orders were taken quickly. Drinks appeared quite rapidly but no one took lunch orders. We waited until 1.45pm when one of us went in to ask when we might place lunch orders... This was done by 1.55pm. I went into the pub shortly before 2.30pm to inquire when we might get our food. I made a point of saying there were 12 angry cold and hungry people outside who might not wait much longer. I paid for my beer and made it very clear I wasn't going to wait much longer for my lunch.I was told the kitchen was plating our lunches at that moment....My lunch would have been a tuna melt baguette.I returned to the group and reported that the food was allegedly on its way...By 2.35pm I decided that I'd had enough of waiting in the cold (The heaters were ineffective).By then I'd been outside for 1 hour 20 mins since our arrival. So I left....I hope the rest of the group eventually received some lunch !I certainly won't be returning to the Running Mare anytime soon....

The food is ok here and the staff were friendly enough, however, it all just lacked a certain amount of professionalism and care. We had a table of 7 placed inside the pub but it was in a small area by the back door which was draughty and cold and there was a table behind us that was so close it was a struggle to get up from the table when both sets of seats were occupied. The food took far far too long to arrive, so much so that we had to chase it up, and when it arrived it was just a bit disappointing, especially the lobster, which was a key reason for choosing to go there in the first place. The desserts were all well & good but they had run out of vanilla ice cream, a pretty basic staple for a pub kitchen I would have thought. The staff clearly seem to care about the place & were all very nice, but the service was just lacking on the night.

Caroline and Jimmy were instantly attentive as soon as we arrived, we were shown to our seat and ordered our first drink straight away. Jimmy the head barman was on the case and a drink was placed in front of us so quickly that we thought there had been a mistake! This theme continued, never waiting more than a couple of minutes for service. The food was fresh, wholesome and tasty; well prepared and piping hot. I was so impressed that I found the manager and thanked him personally for the great service and food. On leaving, I realised that I had forgotten to leave the staff a tip and made a special trip the next day to do so. I am a frequent pub-goer and I fully recommend this pub.

We visited on a quiet Tuesday evening in September. We had reserved a table by phone earlier in the day, asking for a quiet table. We were told that it would probably be a quiet evening anyway. We were welcomed to our table and enjoyed the wall photos of British Racing Car Champions since the 1950's. It seems the owner's brother is one of them.To drink, we chose glasses of Rioja, which were delicious. To eat, I selected albondigas meatballs to start, half rack of ribs with coleslaw, and in an effort to eat healthier, swapped the fries for a salad. My companion started with curried cauliflower soup followed by two starter portions of croquetas and figs stuffed with goats cheese. The preparation, presentation and flavours were sublime. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful and I succumbed to the temptation of a fruit crumble dessert served with ice cream.Everything was perfect. A real model of how to do brilliant hospitality, food and drinks. We'll definitely be back!

We met friends for dinner, having not been here before but location was good for us and website and menu looked good. Very busy, lively vibe. Young waiting staff very pleasant but all seemed a little nervous and had no knowledge of the menu or even the drinks menu. No idea what cider they had or if they had a low sugar lemonade, seemed a difficult question. They may have been new which is fine, we all start somewhere. Our food order was taken by a more “senior” waitress without a smile (at any point in the evening) who informed us the other staff are not qualified to take food orders and she would make sure we got what we asked for. Her manner was so off that this sounded more like a threat! We were also an inconvenience to her as we were chatting so much we had to keep asking for more time to order as we hadn’t chosen yet, asking “is it ANOTHER 5 minutes!” and by the time we got to dessert the young waitress was flummoxed by us asking if they do custard! They don’t, even though it is on their website, but again this was a difficult question. As the evening progressed we enjoyed the food, and found the bizarre service quite entertaining. Old fashioned hand written bill gave total for food and one for drinks, no breakdown so no way to check it is correct. Even that seemed to have attitude.Very funny evening which will be quite a talking point with friends but won’t be returning!! Shame as food and venue are great.

Went here with friends for a Sunday Lunch. We asked for an outside table and were told we would be sitting in the Lobster Pot (I think). the weather forecast was pretty bad and we didnt know what to expect as we hadnt been here before. The pub is what I would call an old fashioned traditional pub, I was impressed when we arrived. Nice greeting from the guys behind the bar and we were shown to our table. Very easy to order our food and drinks. Our friends daughter wasnt feeling that well but the staff were very accomodating in finding her something that she wanted to eat, even though it wasnt on the menu. The food arrived and it was all exclent, none of us could fault it. The part of teh afternoon that really impressed us all was the excelent service. It started raining and then thundering and lightning. The staff were drenched coming from the pub to the outdooor area but not one of them moaned and took it in their stride. I would have given a 5 but the are atht let the place down was teh cleanliness of the toilets, it wasnt just me as my wife said the ladies werent that great. there was no soap in the gents and there was quite an unpleasant smell. One of the few pubs that retains a pub like atmosphere, and serves very good fresh food. If you don’t want to be in a pub, the outside tables are also very good. Roasts, beef, chicken, lamb, pork (or mixed!) all very good, and served hot with plenty of fresh veg. All the food is prepared and cooked on site. Service excellent, particularly the young girl whose first day it was on Sunday. Drinks good variety and well priced - as was the food. Roughly a quarter of the price of newcomer Grapelli in Cobham, and food and service both more enjoyable at the Runner.

Called to reserve (no app). "Where'd you want to sit, inside or in the car park?" Er, inside then. Turns out the car park is nicely converted to seating, but no frills on the customer service description. This continued when we arrived. We were seated promptly. Asked if they did Aperol spritz, waiter said 'I don;t even know what Aperol is". OK, so you don;t do it, no need to confess your ignorance of a current drink trend.Starters included calamari which had clearly been deep fried from frozen. It was tasty - but £6 for six identical bright orange rings. Patatas bravas good.Mains were what clouded the day. Partners "Sea Bream special" was frozen fillet cooked in the deep fat frier. No seasoning and it curled at the edges like something in a fish and chip shop. My BBQ half chicken had no see a barbeque - it was not charred nor the skin crisp. It was slightly over-roasted chicken, doused in BBQ sauce so synthetic it might not have been allowed at McDonalds. Had a mouthful of spinach and it was full of grit. I sent it back and shared some of the kids Mac & cheese. Was not offered a replacement nor an apology. I made it clear to the main waitress that I had had to send my main back. Response "OK then...." no apology either. When the bill came it was just handwritten, stating the total for food and drink and adding them up to a grand total. I asked if the chicken was taken off: "No, just the spinach. The chicken was properly described" .I then made it clear that as it was inedible, and I had not eaten it, I would not be paying for it. She went to check with the manager and it was duly remove. Will not be returning, but the 80's timewarp weirdness of this place and its TOWIE style clientele make it worth a visit. Just don't order food or expect an Aperol spritz. The place that the 90s and the 00s passed by!

Hadn’t pre-booked – but no problems for Tuesday service – offered outdoors under umbrellas or under cover open sided seating – choose the latter as weather forecast was for heavy rain showers that duly arrived - service friendly and efficient – we went for sandwiches and baked potato options – my wife went for a prawn sandwich – well filled and satisfying – me I can’t resist chilli when it is on the menu – so mine was a variation with fries rather than baked potato – have waited 15 months since the last time I had it in a pub – came with tasty and tangy salad on the side – accompanied with a Timothy Taylor - excellent combination which would have answered for me all the Great British menu questions apart from is it banquet worthy? – Perhaps not but it made my day – thank you…..

We came here for a Sunday roast after reading the reviews on TA but we were totally let down. We arrived and were ‘greeted’ by a very abrupt waitress, she asked for our name the just turned around and walked off, no acknowledgment or response at all which is very rude. We then waited more than an hour for our roasts, the table next to us who ordered after us received theirs 15 minutes before us so there was clearly an error. When the food came it was average and basic, nothing special at all. Drab and weary atmosphere inside, they should put some music on quietly in the background. What made it worse was the extreme noise from the hand dryers going off every minute. They had left the toilet doors open to make it more hygienic but we were the other side of the loos and could still hear the blasting. It was terrible. Just put out some paper towels...The staff were stuck up, we couldn’t wait to leave.

After a long early day in the county of Kent, it was good to be finished and back in the Elmbridge area by 12.50 pm.Sunny afternoon, so I suggested lunch, at this venue to a colleague - plus, the pub has a superb area at the rear, for dining outside. Plus we could blow the rest of our expenses, for the day.For the uninitiated - this pub lies off the main road - if one drives through Cobham, in the direction of Stoke D’Abernon (or vice versa), and is on the Tilt Green.Plentiful parking in abundance, can be found, to the rear of the pub.I’ve always found this pub to be consistently good, having been a diner here, with family members, over the last 20 years or so.Staff, as always, are decent. Our luncheon was interrupted by a dear lady colleague, from work, asking how the day had gone. She’d said she had read half of a screenplay I had been writing ‘for fun’ - I was beyond thrilled to hear she found it ‘hilarious’, ‘moving’, ‘romantic’ and ‘dramatic’ (all ).....’and racier than 50 Shades of Grey’ (). Being a male, I had never felt motivated to read that drivel, so I took this as a mixed précis, however, she did mention that our beloved Boss had heard about the screenplay and had suggested the title be renamed ‘50 Shaves of Mike....per decade’ (due to my aversion to wet shaving). For once, I was impressed (entirely), by his sense of humour.Nonetheless, I digress. The starters were superb! The prawn cocktail here is a winner....proper homemade, fresh, ingredients.....my colleague’s starter of Salt and Pepper squid salad was apparently excellent. To quote the L’Oreal advert, and as I had said to the colleague over the phone - ‘we were worth eeeet’ - and we had decided to go for the whole lobsters (each) for mains. In no way did I feel I was, in any way, racking up too much money on expenses.....The mains? They were worth eeet, also, and were exceptional. The lobster was truly tremendous!Staff were efficient, polite and fastidious, throughout.Exceptionally good

The table wasn’t ready and we had to wait a few minutes and that’s fine BUT we then saw how the waiter cleaned the table - due to Covid - this is most important as we all know! He cleaned the table quickly but didn’t touch the chairs which all had arms and I had to ask him to do it!! There was inadequate sanitiser and the one in the car park didn’t work. Most restaurants we’ve been to have sanitiser on the tables. This is a management problem and the staff need training in Covid deep cleaning and needs sorting immediately. The food was excellent and the staff very good.

Great atmosphere, great staff too, everyone knows everyone and us outsiders are made to feel like one of the family. A fine selection of ales on tap and more than enough mouth watering dishes to satisfy the hungriest traveller. To be hones even you are hungry after the restaurant has closed the landlord is more than happy to see you won't starve before breakfast. Ideally located for my needs in and around Surrey. Have been dining here, very sporadically, over many many years, and the food has always been consistently superb.Have, additionally, always like the geographic location. After reading a review - below - myself and an Italian guest were looking forward to encountering the ‘rudest Batman’ ever.Who would we be encountering? An erratic Christian Bale, a sullen Ben Affleck, or miserable Michael Keaton? Alas we encountered no-one rude, or any of the above. A disappointment!Service was friendly -Starters of Bubble and Squeak, and Scallops were both excellent.Mains of Fillet Steak and Fish pie were both very good indeed. The fish pie certainly had a great variety and quality of fish and seafood in it.Great meal.

Just enjoyed a Christmas lunch with a few old friends and we couldn’t have chosen a better venue. A warm and cosy atmosphere accompanied by delicious food. I had a fantastic prawn cocktail followed by a succulent rib-eyed steak, both of generous proportions. Accompanied by some very fine claret, the name of which I wish to keep a secret in order that it doesn’t run out before o get to enjoy it again. Friendly, helpful and attentive staff made for a most memorable lunch. I will certainly return in the new year ( if not before). Well done.

We returned after quite a while away and were disappointed to see this pub suffer the lure of becoming a “Gatro-pub”. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a great Gastro pub and we frequent them often but they are everywhere these days and we therefore crave the less frilly fuss of a traditional pub with great grub... which is 100% what The Running Mare used to be.

I can't rate this pub highly enough. I've been a handful of times now and each time has been just as amazing as the last. Great food, Service and drink. I HIGHLY recommend the Sunday roast, the Steak and the Shiraz is TO DIE FOR. Definitely go if you can/are around/looking for an amazing dining experience

Cracking Sunday lunch in this proper Surrey boozer today . Great service and all the food was perfectly cooked. Crispy spuds and Yorkshire’s , greens not soggy, beef nice and rare and lamb spot on. Well done running mare

This pub serves a wide variety of meals in a great setting, and all the better for not being a Gastropub. There are so many pubs in Surrey that purport to be pubs but are trying to be restaurants. This is a pub which has a drinking area, which seems to be a popular place for locals, plus a small room for dining. Seems a good idea to book a table, it’s popular. Service was good. One to return to. Enjoyed our lunch.

Terrible family dinner, the service was seriously slow and one of my boys spent the night with his head in the loo after having the fish. AVOID.

Walked down from my wife's old childhood home in Fairhope Lane (no short distance),and stopped here to have a beer. Menu looked good so we stayed for a late lunch in the nearly filled garden. Food was very good, service prompt. We left happy.

The running mate still remains my favorite restaurant in Cobham. The menu is diverse enough and everything is delicious. Had a rack of lamb yesterday and again well done, well cooked and delicious.

I was really impressed with this pub. It has a good menu of varied dishes, all cooked to order and served by quality staff. Beers are good. The atmosphere is friendly and warm. We sat outside in the very pleasant garden. I would have no hesitation in returning.

The Running Mare has managed to combine a pub atmosphere with a quiet dining facility. The small dining area provides a wonderful peaceful area where you can easily hold a conversation. Back to the food.

I booked the Running Mare for my birthday and it was the only restaurant on the borders of Sussex,Surrey & Kent I could find offering a menu serving lobster, Sunday lunches, steaks, chicken and various other dishes. The tripadvisor comments helped make up my mind! I travelled from my home in South West France for my birthday with my family and I was not disappointed with the excellent menu, customer service or venue. Thank you to all the staff.

I was staying with some friends in Cobham and they introduced me to this great looking pub with a lovely ambience. These are the pubs that only Britain has and the London Pride was on fine form, as it mostly is down south.

Went on a friday night. Very busy and very slow service. It was quicker to leave the table and order at the bar. I asked and stressed to have my liver very rare, lots of blood. It arrived eventually tough as leather. Waited for a while to find someone to complain, gave up and returned plate to the counter.

We went on a wet Monday evening in June - with friends who were visiting from New Zealand. Despite the miserable weather we had a very enjoyable evening. Friendly efficient service; great food (2 of us had fish pie; two of us steak and kidney pudding); and a large car park (good for the torrential rain). Thank you.

I haven’t been to The Running Mare for far too long. Had the chance to go there last night, last minute, with a friend and got the nicest welcome from Caroline and Jimmy, followed by utterly delicious food as always! Love this pub a lot - always excellent food, terrific atmosphere too. Just need to go there MORE OFTEN!

Waited 1.5 hours for our main course to arrive, which arrived without even an apology. Fish pie was awful, bland lacking evidence of fish and accompanying veg was tired and very uninspiring.

I selected this Gastro-pub as it was showing the Chelsea v Arsenal match. Booking in advance is recommended as it does get busy. We had the table in front of the TV. Started with a King Prawn cocktail, very fresh lettuce, perfect Rose Marie sauce and paprika but although advertised with the correct slice of brown bread, it was served with big wedges of soft loaf bread. Then had the Angus beef burger, cheese and rashers of bacon with big chips, which was really nice and fully of flavour. My friend had the beef curry - again, really tasty and not over powering. No hesitation in recommending the food in this establishment.

With the English summer finally here what better place to enjoy great food and drinks in a stunning environment. My lobster was perfect, served with plenty of garlic butter and my husband’s fillet steak was perfectly cooked, his triple cooked chips were delicious. He thoroughly enjoyed the real ale and commented on how well it was kept. A good wine list made it hard for us to choose but we ended up with a delicious English white. The smell of the wisteria was simply lovely as was the service, friendly, efficient and attentive. Would definitely recommend and look forward to returning soon.
