The Rubbing House in Epsom and Ewell

We had a wonderful lunch with friends. The food was excellent, as was the service and table position. We were never hurried and the whole experience was relaxed and enjoyable.

Set in a Beautiful setting of Epsom downs, found service to be slow on this occasion. Food was good as expected. Really nice to be back for the views

Arrived on a perfect sunny October day, was greeted by front of house and shown straight to a window table with an amazing view over the racecourse. People were sitting outside and there was a continuous feed of people coming through the door and seated, by about 1:30 all tables in and out were full but the service never slipped. Garlic Cheesy mushrooms were ordered by two of us and were fantastic. Mains consisted of Roast Beef, roast pork and traditional fish and chips. Not huge portions but perfect in size as way too many places are giving a HUGE plate where half is left. Puddings were the caramelised biscuit cheesecake and chocolate ice cream which once again were amazing. I have lived around the area for over 40 years, first visit and will so be going back regularly now.

Avoid. Extremely rude manager, told us as we had a child with us (one well behaved 11 year old) we could only sit in the cold empty room in the back with views of the road, rather than with the rest of the customers overlooking the racecourse. Tried to tell us this was for licensing reasons but then admitted it was just his own rule. Ruined our afternoon to be treated like second class citizens and upset my son too.. Very child and family unfriendly, avoid. Much nicer pubs in the area that welcome families.

For the 2nd time in 4 weeks I have visited this marvelous restaurant with wife and a different couple. Both times all members of party had different meals, and without exception all meals were perfectly cooked and so tasty. Puddings are also excellent. All staff are very friendly, but professional, and I have been lucky to have Gabby as my waitress on both visits. She is very attentive and professional. Highly recommend, because of the quality of the establishment I have no objections to paying slightly more than maybe an average restaurant.

What a wonderful evening we had at the Rubbing House. The service was excellent, the food fantastic lovely and hot. The four of us had a main meal and dessert. Wonderful location, great view. A little bit pricey but well worth it. We will definitely be back.

Great food and service, I always like to reward this with my gratuity, I briefly checked my bill which appeared in order, however on reflection I re checked the menu the following day and noticed in very small print that a 10% charge had been added I therefore ended up paying over £35 tip be aware this charge is already included. If these charges are to be added they should be in bold print, a little underhand I believe.

Food is great and a lot on the menu ! The Rubbing House is at a great location, I like sitting outside if the weather permits! Only negative is that service has been a bit slow on several occasions for me.

Being at the end of the race track. Nice views across the downs. Staff are very friendly, and nothing is too much trouble. Seating inside as well as out. (Dogs not allowed in the eating area outside) Nice choices on the menu. Nicely presented. A wide variety of drinks. If out walking your dogs in the afternoon ,nice place to stop for a coffee.Highly recommend.

A wide and varied selection menu, which was surprising, but more surprising was how tasty and delicious the food was! The service was also very attentive and with a smile. The Venue is also very nice. Will visit again.

We have been here before and enjoyed it during the summer with friends outside. This time we were sat indoors which was incredibly noisy and uncomfortable to even hear the person opposite. Service was a little slow to start with. Food was cooked well. Very generous portion sizes for roast pork.

Outstanding food and service in a great setting. Parking is a challenge for disabled persons as pub allows anyone to use the spaces not a single blue badge in every disabled space. Owner should advocate for all guests and not just protect the bottom lines.

Quick birthday celebration popped in for lunch great meal and service

This restaurant has been consistently excellent since it first opened, I have had some wonderful family meals there.

Usually good but tonight we waited almost an hour for our main course having sat down at 6.40. My moussaka was tasteless and wishy washy. My wife had the tenderloin of pork with apple and cider sauce. The sauce tasted very odd, fatty but acidic. The pork was dry. I'll give this place a miss from now on.

1st time at the Rubbing house.. Eat outside.... Bit windy... But what a nice setting.. Overlooking the racecourse and downs.. Food very nice... Staff was on the ball.. And we will be definitely going back there...

5 of us had lunch table booked for 1.30pm Saturday 24th August. Was greeted by our waiter Mario great friendly helpful guy. All of the courses we had were superb but for my Pork Belly was just superb which I remarked to Mario. A great lunch time made even better by Mario well done from all five of us.

Unfortunately, the calves liver meal wasn't good. It's the 2nd time ,I've tried this dish.

The food of this fine establishment was so extraordinarily delicious, I could have 1,000,000 more chicken burgers. Our waitress was absolutely terrific, serving our drinks, asking how/ what we did in our day, it’s safe to say she deserves a pay rise.

I had a not so slay time at this pub. The drinks and the food was fairly decent. However, the staff were unwelcoming and rude. There was a bartender called Jack. He was the only member of staff there that didn’t make me feel like a total inconvenience. Big up Jackypoo.

Overpriced and relying too much on their location. Not much of a welcome by staff. Seating inside by the bar is uncomfortable and staff need to have better training in customer care. A big disappointment overall. The food was only just ok but not very tasty. I would not come back. I also noticed the management don't reply to any of the reviews on here which I feel is rather arrogant.

Always very good service and food

Visited here for lunch on a sunny August day, large doors open to outdoor seating area, very pleasant. Good selection on the menu & good sized portions of good food. I don't think you'd get anywhere near it on a race day, maybe if you book, you might be lucky. Certainly worth a visit.

We visited while staying at a local hotel, and found the ambience inside the place to be quite good. They serve reasonable portions of food at acceptable prices for the area. Food, although not spectacular, certainly hits the spot after a long day on the road. Waiters were all attentive, amicable and pleasant to deal with, which makes a remarkable change in this day and age. The venue is located in a scenic spot directly adjacent to the Epsom race course. All in all, everything was entirely pleasant, and we would definitely return when next in the area.

I have used the Rubbing House on numerous occasions over the last 10 years. I have especially enjoyed the food, a credit to the kitchen team! However on my last visit on the 19th of July, even though the food lived up to expectations, l was very upset to receive a fine around two weeks later for £60 for a parking infringement that l was completely unaware of. I had no idea that there had been a change in their parking policy, after all it is a pub not a public car park.. I should also add that not one member of staff mentioned this to me. I am an 86 years dyslexic pensioner who has suffered the indignity of this condition since childhood, to receive this fine in the post, made me feel humiliated. Sadly l will not be using this pub again as even after explaining the situation l was told to contact the parking enforcement company.

Arrived at 12.15pm. Only 2 outside tables occupied. We were discussing where we would like to sit when a male (assume he was the manager) came out and said ‘it says wait to be seated’ in a tone that implied we couldn’t read. I had telephoned the previous evening to ask is we needed to book an outside table and was told they didn’t take outside bookings so had assumed that the sign applied to indoor restaurant bookings. He then asked if we had registered our car inside.I hadn’t been for quite a while and wasn’t aware that this was a requirement. I was in a disabled bay displaying a blue badge but snapped it was still necessary or get £100 fine. We were finally taken to a table and were then told we had 1.5hrs and then would have to move. The food was ok - apart from the chewy bits in the pork belly - and waiting staff efficient. We had barely finished eating before we were asked if we wanted anything else or the bill. I did not feel particularly welcome and would suggest that the manager needs to improve his people skills! occupied

Super position overlooking the racecourse and a pleasant gastropub experience.

The food was reasonable for pub grub. Staff were excellent , friendly and helpful. Went for lunch and ended having dinner as well, when we discovered there was an evening meet at Epson, horses pass literally about 10m away good day out

Beware of the parking fine! We entered the car registration into the machine yet still received a £60 fine! We spoke to the manager on several occasions regarding the fine and he said on multiple occasions he had contacted the company to attempt to cancel the fine yet we heard nothing back nor did we receive any confirmation in writing. We ended up having to pay the fine before it increased in value. In the middle of a cost living crisis, this is daylight robbery especially since we actually registered the car! We will not be returning!

This place used to be great. Old manager was such a helpful and nice guy. What's happened!! There are No options for people with Allergies. Parking charge even though typed in my registration. Had to pay the fine. Manger said there was nothing he could do even though they pay the company and he remembered me being there. Loads of reviews on here and trip advisor saying the same in regards to the parking. Am currently in talks with parking ombudsman POPLA about this. If anyone has had issues please message me.

Service and food were good but the lunch totally ruined by ANTS crawling over our table. I squashed two in front of the lovely waitress and several prior to that and was told it was a recognized problem. I told the manageress upon leaving who did not offer anything other than a slightley shocked look. She was also aware of the issue. I only wished I had refused to pay or enlightened the other 70 or so Patrons. Perhaps this would have received a more appropriate response. I shall await a reply !

Very well run establishment actually situated within the race course. Good value food, excellent service, car parking, and a helpful dress code helps maintain decorum - and organisation.

The Rubbing House offers a wonderful dining experience with breathtaking views over Epsom Downs. Every visit here is a delight, thanks to the exceptionally welcoming staff who go above and beyond to ensure a memorable experience. The food is always delicious, with a menu that caters to all tastes and preferences. Special mention must go to Omar, who my mother genuinely looks forward to seeing on each visit. His warm and attentive nature makes her feel incredibly special. Additionally, Zack, the owner, deserves recognition for his outstanding hospitality and for creating such a welcoming atmosphere. The Rubbing House is truly a gem in Epsom, offering not only fantastic views and delectable food but also a caring and attentive service that makes every visit special.

Service was slow and it seemed the staff were pretty much untrained in courtesy. The food was ok not that great. A bit pricey too. The views on a sunny day are pretty great though. Toilet was disgusting.

Popped in for a quick drink on the way home from work, won't do that again. We could only sit a a table that was not set out for food service, so not much choice where to sit, despite it not being busy at all! Sat in a corner only listen to the very loud 'kitchen equipment' blasting away. Quickly had the drink and left, didn't feel welcome at all

Had a great lunch in the Rubbing House today. My wife and I shared the Greek Cypriot Meze for two. Served by the wonderful Kasia. Really tasty food. Will go again.

Firstly had to pay a £50 deposit which seems over the top. Table was in a corner at the back of the restaurant, very stuffy Food okay Struggled in with my disabled Mum - did check the parking board in the car park briefly - despite being met by pub staff and security, nobody mentioned that we had to register our car at reception Received a parking fine of £100 - £60 if you pay within two weeks - that came a week later Very poor

Booked a table for 2 at 3.30pm today 10-6-2024 amazingly cooked food so delicious, brilliant service, lovely wine and beer. Thank you so much for a lovely time cant wait to visit again.

Found the food and the drink very expensive

Brilliant food, good service, lovely views and overall absolutely amazing atmosphere. We initially visited on a trip down for a relatives birthday, and it was so good we came back and brought the family.

I first visited this establishment a year ago following up on a recommendation, and have frequently visited with my family since. We are always received with a warm welcome from Omar and the team, and the vibe has been friendly and relaxed. There is a decent selection to choose from on the menu, and the food has always arrived well presented, and consistently delicious. This is a particularly lovely spot during the warmer months with the seating arrangement overlooking the racecourse.

Went for lunch . Really busy pub with a great atmosphere in Epsom Race Course. Quick service with really good food with quality ingredients . The pricing was reasonable for the quality . One to keep in my favourite place and defo to visit again.

Food good shame about miserable service

Had a meal here last night , food ok, but the service was absolutely shocking. 4 of us ate here last night, food was OK. Starters was chicken pate, calamari (quite chewy) prawn cocktail and meatballs (very salty). Mains were chicken curry( would have been nice not just put on the plate, but the rice and curry in separate bowls, coq ou vin , prawn linguine (very spicy) and minexwas gourmet steak burger, well presented, nice chips , ok coleslaw , and a very bland burger, because badly under seasoned. Price ok, but 10 minutes to order a drink and 20 minutes to receive it, and the same for our meal.over 2 and a half hours to complete the meal, shocking

Unbelievably arrogant manager, I asked him is this actually the Pimms jug he said yes they would not serve you otherwise! If you don’t like it tough - having spent £35 This pint and a half jug is NOT a pimms jugs rip off central and rude staff avoid. Such a shame as it used to be a decent summer stop

Delightful restaurant overlooking the famous Epsom Downs. Lovely staff, delicious food and a lightxand airy ambience. The service was excellent and there wasn't anything not to like. Ample parking, do enter your number plate on arrival inside the pub.

This was our first visit to the Rubbing House and was really impressed. We wanted to go somewhere nice to eat before an afternoon at the races. We received a really warm and friendly greeting on arrival. Waiting staff were delightful and efficient. Food served piping hot and well presented. We will definitely return.

It’s not particularly amazing (food, service, etc) although it is good. But the selling point is the location - it has lots of tables by windows that look out over the Downs and a big outdoor seating area. So it’s worth going for that.

Had several meals here whilst in the area on a training course and would highly recommend eating here. Some of if not the best pub food I've had.

We celebrated a very special occasion, and everything was amazing. Our guests were blown away by the delicious food and the excellent service. The manager and his team could not have been more helpful. We look forward to returning very soon.

We were a family of 4 eating on a Saturday evening over Easter weekend. Called up an hour or so beforehand to reserve a table. Walked across from the nearby holiday inn express where we were staying for the night. Lovely location. Restaurant very nice. Staff friendly and helpful. Great service. Nice drinks and good food. Lovely cottage pie. Would book again if in the area.

Great service, bit pricey for a pub tbh but the food was decent and portion sizes were huge. Lovely location for a walk on the downs after. They’d run out of the chorizo chilli special but the food I did have instead was great.

One of the bar staff was very snappy to my daughter been here few times and first time had member of staff like that we was sitting outside and didn't know our table number so we had to go and find out and he said go and get number as can't serve you but was not a nice way he said this but hopefully next time he won't be working as there is no need to be snappy it wasn't very busy

This place is absolutely amazing. We ate here twice. The food is absolutely amazing. The service and ambient is brilliant. As you are just a throw stone away from the grandstand of the racecourse, the view is brilliant. Maybe you are lucky enough to see horses go by. The food is not cheap, but it is worth every penny!! I recommend this place any time!! Thank you for making us so welcome!!!

Great choice of food and drinks. Good amount of space and outside seating is great in the summer. Only drawback is that food is a bit expensive, and the vegan burger is pretty dry.

A really enjoyable lunch, very speedy service, food tasty and piping hot, nice ambience, really could not fault it. Cheerful staff and a special shout out to our waitress, Ayse, who was friendly, professional and attentive. Can't wait to come back. Thanks to everyone at Rubbing House.

Not the best of welcomes tbh. felt like our arrival was a bit of a bother despite having booked. Table service was excellent & the food was fine. The pub itself & views are the best though!

Absolutely the best roast dinner! 10/10 I never have high expectations of a roast when I dine out cos I’m so damn fussy. But this will take some beating. So tasty, the chicken was tender, gravy, potatoes, Yorkshire pud, veg all delicious. I’m so tempted to go back again as I was so impressed. Thank you for such a pleasant experience in dining. I will be back on a Sunday. X

We have been to the Rubbing House a couple of times over the years to celebrate family birthdays/anniversaries etc. and have always enjoyed the food and the service however we have noticed a change in both recently. We came on 9th March for my father's 80th birthday, the waitress was lovely but the food took ages to come to the table. When it did arrive, the portions were tiny and no better than a microwave meal (I had the vegetable lasagne). My daughter aged 12 had the chicken burger, but only ate half as she said it tasted funny, when we looked it was pink inside. My daughter was up that night vomiting (she totally redecorated the Premier Inn bathroom!!) and 3 days later she is still off school with diarrhoea and severe stomach cramps........she has never been so ill. I wish I had seen the reviews about the off chicken before we ordered her burger! The Rubbing House are obviously not changing their ways regarding food, or simply not reading and learning from the reviews. Unfortunately this will be the last time we go to the Rubbing House as a family, we cannot risk the food poisoning again. ** We know it was the chicken burger that made her ill as she only had toast in the morning before our 2 hour journey to Epsom for the family event.

I have been several times and have never been disappointed.

We went to this restaurant for the first time .When we arrived my friend put his registration on one screen and i put mine on another .I got a fine for failure to register Which i know i did .We were there for 2hrs 20 minutes .eating our meal Why else would i be there .I have proof of that but makes no difference .The meal was quite nice except i am allergic to gravy and they could not make gravy with out it.

Ita always busy, even on Mondays, Large menu, food is high quality, decent portions, But Desserts are small and expensive Drinks are also expensive, Nice polite staff, In Summer it's a perfect spot to sit outside with friends

Certainly not as nice as roast dinners we cook at home. Restaurant was cold and we noticed other customers had coats on. Asked it they could turn heating up. Had taken out our 81 year old mother who was cold throughout. One vegan dessert on the menu described as chocolate and clementine tort which sounded lovely but when it came I was so disappointed that it was covered in a raspberry coulee which had it said this on the menu I would have asked for this to be left off. Not keen to return as quite a pricy average lunch.
