We went there for our Christmas Do as we work for the British Heart Foundation ❤️. We all had a fab night the food was yummy and the Cherry Bakewell cocktail was amazing. James and Sophie were fab and nothing was too much for them. Thank you so much Sam

Great food great atmosphere and i am in a wheelchair and the manager and mis wife and bar staff treat me well and welcome me it’s the best pub i have been in where i am welcome i recommend it to all my friends and family i would give them more than a five star. Great service too

Called in for few drinks last week, service was fantastic from Ben, he was very knowledgeable about the drink selection and even persuaded me to try the “house beer” flint eye deffo my new favourite tipple

Popped in for a few drinks with the lads and we was pleasantly surprised by this little gem of a pub, the ginger fella (I assume is the landlord) was a fantastic host with plenty of banter. The bar had a pool table which was reasonably priced to use and well maintained, they had a large selection of drinks which is always a plus.

Lovely little pub, nice open fire place and pool table, which is rare in Oxford. Worth a vist!

Called in for a quick lunch, burger deal was amazing value finished off with a very well kept real ale. Massive thanks to the manager (James I believe) he was very attentive

The service was super friendly and attentive! Try the Level Head IPA and have a great feed here. Fantastic beer garden too! Friendly staff and locals. We have been travelling England for 2 weeks and this is the best pub we have been to. The open fire topped the night off. Cheers!

Stopped off here yesterday for food following a hospital appointment at the Headington for my grandson as this was literally just around the corner. Kids menu - chicken nuggets cremated over cooked and hard with chips and beans - asked for ketchup they did not have any - ordered ice cream for 99p got charged £1.75 with no explanation why. Adult meals wanted to order 1 chicken and bacon sandwich, got told it came with chips but was then charged for the chips on top of £6.50 for the sandwich. wanted to order a cheese toastie too but was told that there was no more bread, i therefore ordered a side of chips for £3.75 which had a max of 10 chips in the bowl. No fruit shoots for kids so was charged £3.40 for a J2O I also ordered a latte which came and was cold. paid a bill of £28.95 which was day light robbery for what we had raised concerns with the bar man who did not care or do anything to assist us as he was more concerned on texting on his phone !!!

What a great little pub, the garden area is lovely and the pub generally is great, have been here a few times, but each time we have an amazing visit! Look forward to going back!

The steak and ale pie was extraordinarily bad. It was just a pie crust filled with gravy and three sad pieces of gristle floating inside. Gravy and ale pie would have been a better description, do not order.

Booked for Sunday pre-Christmas lunch. Very quiet when we arrived, ordered two turkey dinners having been assured they were still (12.30!) available. Twenty minutes later we were presented with two beef dinners; there were no turkey dinners available. Sent them back, and after another twenty minutes we received two chicken dinners, which looked as if they were yesterday's leftovers. No apologies. The waiter mumbled something about having our drinks and dessert at no charge, but I'd paid on ordering. Not impressed.

Had a great experience in the royal standard last night. Their pies are fantastic! We look forward to returning soon.

We are staying in Headington for a few nights and wanted a pub meal within walking distance. We weren't disappointed at all. The pie and chips were lovely . Tasty and hot. We asked for extra gravy which wasn't a problem at all. We were served by 2 lovely staff - Sharon and Tasha. Nothing was too much trouble and they went above and beyond to ensure we had a nice evening. Thank you both.

We had a lovely evening at the Royal Standard with charming & patient host Tasha. Cod goujons, sweet potato fries and tasty sausages (Nedder-something sausages) prepared by Harry, and delicious pints of cask beer, plus excellent wine. Great atmosphere - very friendly and welcoming and 3 minutes walk from our B&B the Pickwick Guest House.

Lovely pub, friendly and helpful staff (especially Tasha and James!) and dog friendly which is always a bonus!

ordered lunch for myself and my 97 year old mother in law, lady at bar was very polite and on the ball , pub was not that busy and was very clean and airy. the lunch arrived in good time and was piping hot both meals were very nice , the desert was lovely which the bar lady recommended, sticky toffee pudding with custard, a great pub in the middle of Headington with views of the famous shark outside

Quiet pub. Not top class but friendly and welcoming. Sharon who served us was helpful,funny and very good at her job. Made the meal special. We had scampi, and mac 'n' cheese followed by sticky toffee pudding. All delicious, hot and good portions.

Good to see both Old Speckled Hen and Abbott on tap last Friday evening, which hadn't always been the case in past recent visits. The Old Speckled Hen was in excellent condition. Would also like to mention the barstaff that evening, Tasha and Sharon, who were hardworking, friendly and helpful. Well done 👍

This pub has had a huge and well overdue refurbishment since I last visited quite a few years ago. Although the layout is very much the same, there is adequate space for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters between tables too. Gone are the grimey tacky furniture and bar surfaces that were once the norm. Customers can enjoy meals and drinks outdoors too, which is adequately lit up at night. There is also a big screen for watching popular sporting events ideally situated in the lower level at the rear of the pub where you'll find a pool table and a further addition of tables and seating. This area leads out to the garden where blankets and throws are provided at the door for your warmth and comfort. I didn't have anything to eat on this visit but did notice the extensive choice displayed on the menu boards. Dog bowls and treats are also available too. The clientele fully represents the residents, workers and senior citizens of the local area. I look forward to visiting again soon! 8/05/2023 The pub was almost empty. The service was OK but the steak and Ale pie was pretty awful as clearly evident from the picture.

The staff were attentive, polite and knowledgeable. We walked in on a whim, Sharon greeted us, described the drinks and the offers. We stayed for a second and then enjoyed selection of the dishes on the menu, the chef provided a taster of the pickled watermelon which was divine. Thanks Tasha and James, and of course Sharon.

Staff always helpful quick service food very nice and waiting not very long overall 9 out of 10

I wanna say thank you to Tasha, who has provided us amazing service and her her customer service was outstanding.

This place is well run, treats it's customers well and fairly if there is trouble, the pool table is a great feature, the green king drinks are good especially level head, the staff are friendly. A poem Spring in a parched land Level head, pool, friendly smiles, live entertainment. Melting pot of the London Road. Jr local, porters, nurses and doctors James, Sophie, sharrow, nick, tash, Ben. Blessed and sent on my way.

Met up with a few friends one evening for a few games of pool. Team was very welcoming and friendly and the pub had a warm atmosphere. The 2 for one deal on beers was a very welcome addition 😀 would definitely go here again

My tennis group and I went to the royal standard after a 5 set match with my thirst pending to be quenched. 3 out of the 4 of us ordered a pint of larger and everything was running smoothly. The bar maid (ashley) came to aggressively demand our friend who didn’t feel like drinking to purchase a drink at which we were all shocked as I don’t believe if we were slightly older looking this would of occurred therefore taking advantage of us being slightly younger then the locals. The bar maid proceeded to tell us this was illegal and that we were not allowed to buy any more drinks and were asked to leave. Overall a terrible experience that I have not come across in any pub ever!

Me and my tennis group had finished a game and come to the royal standard to watch the football, my friends all ordered a drink and I wasn’t feeling like drinking so I had a tap water and we all sat down to watch the football. The bar lady (Ashley) came over five minutes later and demanded that I’d have to order if I was to stay with my friends. We were all very surprised by this as we have been there a lot in the past and ordered I just wasn’t feeling like drinking in this instance. We were all confused and whilst I was thinking of what just happened she had come over five minutes later demanding once again for me to purchase something accept this time I had to get up and leave if I did not order. We questioned why I was forced to order a drink and the bar lady had said because you can’t be in a pub and not drink due to electricity. Which confused us all, to tame the already uncomfortable situation I went up to the bar with her and ordered a pint of lager which was flat and not enjoyable to drink but I felt so uncomfortable with the prior hospitality I couldn’t bring myself to ask for a new pint. I went back to my group and we continued to watch the football. But I didn’t stop there my friend had finished his pint and had gone to bar to order another one, where he was refused service because earlier this instance had occurred. Not only that but he were all asked to leave and we would be able to order another drink even though I had accepted her demand that I order a drink. This experience was honestly unacceptable and not what I expected we were all rather shocked. We headed to the white horse where we ordered drinks and asked if this was normal and we we were greeted with a warning response that this was not normal pub etiquette and was unacceptable we had a lovely time at the white horse and much preferred the experience and the drinks.

A group of healthcare and hospital workers went out to celebrate two colleagues forthcoming birthdays. We had nibbles, snacks, cake and drinks, spending a very enjoyable evening with 10 people in total. The staff at The Royal Standard were very attentive and helpful, bringing our food in a timely manner. We received a 10% NHS discount off our drinks, and 20% off our food order with a Blue Light Card Discount. Having been to the Royal Standard before, I would definitely recommend visiting them again. Whilst staying in Headington for a few days , We came across The Royal Standard. A great pub with nice friendly staff and very good food . It was so good we came back again for another meal the following day . Cheers guys 👍🍺

Visited to meet family and friends for food and to play pool. Lovely staff, extra helpful and polite. Good atmosphere. Good food and great service. Took a dog with us and she was treated exceptionally well with treats and a water bowl. A little gem in Headington.

Went here for a mid week lunch with my hubby. Lovely fire going in the pretty fire place. Served quickly by the delightful Nikki, who is so friendly and smiley, and helped us with the menu. We went for the sharing menu, Nikki was good on helping us choose, answering all our questions. Good pub grub, we will definitely be going again.

Revisiting again with my wife for valentines day. Had a fantastic time and a great meal The team were as freindly as ever. Best pub in headington

Highly recommended as a great place to meet for a chat and pub supper. a lot of good points: Music was playing but unobtrusively, certainly quiet enough to chat without difficulty. Also, TVs for footy were on, but without sound, so again, unobtrusive for talking....

Very welcoming bar staff with very good quality great value pub food, and a selection of interest Green King ales. Music was playing but quiet enough to chat normally. I definitely recommend as a local pub with traditional ambiance as a venue in Headington.

Good food, good Christmas hats and good crackers. Also have been many times outside of Christmas, has student discounts but it is a bit of a lads pub.

Nice place but there isn't anything specific that will make me come again. Food was okay, atmosphere was okay stuff was okay.

Took my wife out for dinner on our Anniversary and enjoyed every minute of our evening there. James and Ben make a fantastic management team and are so engaging with customers. Its great to see.

Great pub with a great atmosphere, I come in most days after work to enjoy a few chilled out drinks with friends. Tasha and James are working most days and definitely have good customer service skills. Would 100% recommend :)

Went for lunch with my mum today and we had the prawns, squid, veggie sliders and hummus. All the food was amazing and our server James was very friendly and looked after us well.
