Didn't stay but had dinner. Lovely chatty hosts. There was plenty of space, not too crowded. Special combo for burger and beer was a good deal. Handy to the shops and cathedral, parking just behind. Recommended by locals too, which is always a good sign.

Overnight stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary, brother and sister wedding anniversaries. Apart from having to wait approximately 20 minutes for a free space in the short stay carpark behind the Royal Standard, the stay was great. The staff were excellent and friendly. The dinner and breakfast were outstanding and catered very well for gluten free allergy. Definitely recommend a visit to the Royal Standard.

Stayed there with the family on Sunday night. From arrival to leaving everything was perfect. They have the right combination, staff efficient and friendly, room was clean and comfy. Has always been overpriced for what is a very average pub. Paid an eye-watering £7 for a pint of lager. I have never seen a pint start with the number 7 in any establishment in the entire country. Bit of a joke really.

Enjoyable 1 night stay for a party in Ely. Room lovely and clean. Very low bed but extremely comfortable. Old metal framed windows as I believe its a conservation building bit it let's all of the faintest of noises in. Breakfast was delicious although we had a half hour wait and appart from my husband and self there was only 1 other family of 4. Staff were helpful when needed. The rooms are not accessible friendly as there are only stairs.

Pub was lovely. Bar staff were lovely. Snack wise, the loaded fries were the most unimaginative, boring fries I've ever eaten. Dont just throw some grated cheese and a few jalapeños on some chips, at least melt the cheese! Such a shame

Clearly the Royal Standard has been a traditional pub, and the front end of the bar can possibly still claim this label. As you move further into the pub however you discover a design that is either very innovative or just plain mad. I thought that the electric green bar and green cocktail bar style seats were a bit risqué then discovered the black spotted animal print covers further on. Even the toilets have very arty and rather attractive radiators. Personally it’s not all to my style (old fashioned git) but I applaud something different that will appeal to a younger clientele and add a bit of fun. Back on planet earth in the traditional part of the pub, and sitting on good old fashioned chairs by the window, our lagers were excellent, as was the service. We enjoyed our visit.

My sister and i went to the royal standard as we have just moved to Ely and what a disappointment!! Ordered a sandwich with chips and a drink each with come to £30 which we didn’t mind paying, until we got the sandwiches. My bread was soggy and the chicken and bacon filler was shocking, i could have gotten better from a Tesco pre made sandwich filler. My sisters bread was rock solid which turned to a soggy mess as her sandwich was sat in what looked like water. We then put salt onto our food in which the girl that service us criticised loudly as she walked into the kitchen among saying other things. We did not appreciate that. Overall I think is it overpriced and we will not be returning, the staff need to also be retrained if they think it is acceptable to talk about customs so rudely and loudly

£30 for two sandwiches and two drinks is diabolical. The sandwich itself was soggy, bland and the fries tasted of old dirty oil and as a paying customer I don’t expect to badly spoken about by a waitress to the kitchen staff about putting salt on my sandwich as ‘the bacon is already salty enough’ that’s embarrassing and staff shouldn’t be talking about customers behind their back. Myself and my sister are very disappointed especially as I’ve just moved to Ely and this was my first experience in this pub and most definitely my last.

They're also open for walk-ins so they have the longest breakfast availability times of anywhere I've stayed (7:00- noon). Inside it is much bigger than it appears from outside and there is a small garden to the rear. There is a large council park behind the pub and you can gain access from there via a back door. Inside it appears to have been recently refurbished, there is a comfortable bar area at the front and a fairly large well furnished restaurant area towards the back. We chose the bar because it was busier - it was about 2:30 on a Friday afternoon so most diners had left. We only had sandwiches but they were high quality - lovely fresh bread, home cooked bacon and good salad. To drink I had well kept Timothy Taylor. I'd recommend to anyone visiting Ely cathedral because there's not many pubs in the centre of the city.

Welcoming atmosphere - met friends for lunch and it was clear that it was a popular place with the locals, which is a pretty good indicator that you are going to have a good time. The food was wonderful - I don't normally have fish n chips outside of a chip shop but this was exceptional. Huge piece of cod, massive (too large if anything) chips and peas and homemade tartar sauce. Couldn't fault it. For a drink I had the Blue Moon White belgian beer - WOW!! It was so smooth and tasty I had to stop myself from drinking it too quickly. A thoroughly enjoyable lunch.

A good sized pub, very popular at the weekend so there is a good buzz about the place. I ordered the beef shin ragu gnocchi, which unfortunately was SO greasy. The gnocchi itself and the beef was nice, but it was sitting in a bowl full of liquid fat rather than a sauce like I was hoping. I understand when slow cooking this cut off beef you get a lot of fat, but I would expect it to be strained off somewhat. My mouth felt coated with grease for some time after, which was unpleasant. My friend ordered the chicken burger, which was a few pieces of very thin fried chicken, again very very greasy. A thicker piece of chicken with lighter batter would be much better. Also - a suggestion to the management. The booth seating is tall so your feet can not reach the floor, and there is nowhere for your feet to rest on under the table. It is uncomfortable to have your legs dangle with no support, so I would strongly recommend the management looks to put footrests/bar or something under the booth tables to make them more comfortable.

Friendly staff serving a good range of drinks at reasonable prices. Food isn't your normal foodservice offering from a random supplier, behind the scenes there must be a talented chef. Daily specials available like burger chips and a pint £15 and the quality is very good.

Nothing particularly wrong with the service or ambience but the drink prices are just ridiculous. A pint of Neck Oil is £7.40! The bar staff blamed it on the brewery when we challenged them on it, but this popular pint is well under £7 in any other Cambridge pub that I’ve drunk it in. Other drinks equally expensive. Just no need for it and we now won’t be going back. Ely has plenty of other decent pubs where you get much better value for money.

The tastiest full English breakfast I have ever eaten in my life! I stayed at The Royal Standard on Saturday night with 2 friends for our visit to the Luxmuralis show at the Catherdral and my only regret is that we didn’t eat our evening meal here as well as breakfast. It’s a beautiful character filled building and the rooms are tastefully decorated with modern facilities. Super comfy mattress, lovely squidgy pillows and a lovely rainfall shower. This was our second visit to the Royal Standard in Ely and, once again, it didn't disappoint. We had a small double room as the one we had before wasn't available but this was equally as comfortable. The staff offer a warm welcome and we accessed our room immediately despite arriving before the requested check in time. On both occasions we've found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful, either with local knowledge or assisting with luggage. We ate in the bar on the first night and were offered a wide selection of food and drink. Wednesday night was burger and a pint for £15 which my husband enjoyed. Breakfasts can be taken between 7 and 12 so no rush for those wanting to enjoy a lie in. We had a day in Cambridge as the journey is only about 11 minutes so perfect for a trip out. Decided to stay at this place due to its location which is close to Ely cathedral. There is a large free car park at the rear of the premises and it only takes a minute or so to get to pub. We were greeted with a very warm welcome from the female members of staff and very quickly shown to our room for the night. It looks like the rooms have been recently upgraded and are in an excellent condition. We were at the top of the building with windows both to the front and rear. Although the windows are wooden there was barely any road noise overnight. Bed was comfortable and I felt at home. We decided to eat at the pub for our evening meal. Wow! The portions were by far the biggest I have ever had in similar locations and my eyes were way bigger than my belly and sadly I left a lot of food, though I must stress had nothing to do with the cooking as everything tasted so good. Breakfast was a similar tale. Clearly everything was freshly cooked as breakfast took around 30 minutes to arrive which was fine as we were continually asked if we wanted more tea. I wouldn’t hesitate to return given the opportunity. Lovely location, lovely staff and lovely food.

Baby portion of scrambled egg on toast was well cooked and creamy. My eggs Florentine was perfectly cooked with runny yolks, and simply the best Hollandaise sauce I have ever had. Due to illness I was only disappointed that I could not finish the generous portion. The all day breakfast, and bacon with pancakes and maple syrup were equally well presented and reported as excellent. Went for a Sunday lunch . Service poor . Nutroast dinner average . Forgot our olives and bread but they did deducted from the bill . Pricey for the food offered. No going back though 😕.

Passing through on a date, thought we’d pop in for old times sake. Drinks good, quite dear but not silly, friendly staff. Clientele…. Disappointing. First sip of wine and someone barges past my chair shouting to a group about how they’d “Just twatted some geezer...

We recently stayed at this Hotel and could not fault the rooms or bathrooms. Check in was fast and the late check out was a bonus. Cons: Central location. Excellent room and bathroom décor with an extra large bed. The bed was really comfortable with...

My wife, daughter and I ate here after a day's sight seeing in Ely. It is situated next to a large public car park (free) and has access via the beer garden overlooking the car park. It is pleasantly furnished and the staff are friendly...

Friendly welcome, lovely interior with artwork by local artists on the walls to purchase, or just admire. Good choice of drinks. Very good meal.

Outrageously expensive….this plate was £48, no wonder there is no photos of the portion sizes anywhere in the pub. The fillet stake £30 was supposedly with a salad that’s the few leaves of greens. Ribs £15 and a bowl of garlic butter £3 Won’t ever...

Good location in town centre. It doesn't have its own car park but there is plenty of car parking at the rear of the hotel. My husband and I stayed in the suite on the second floor. Very comfortable room with seating area. We didn't...

We booked to stay here for one night in a junior suite en-suite (Room 5) - the room was very nice and well laid out - there were a number of stairs to climb to get to the room but I think it was worth...

Had Sunday lunch here. The food was okay but you don't get much for your money. However, £6 for a small diet Coke was outrageous. Perhaps the drinks' menu should be available for customers to see alongside the main menu. I would not recommend and...

Good, central location ideal for the cathedral. The rooms are quite compact (depending on your room you may be at risk of banging your head on the sloping ceiling) but the beds are comfortable. Decent showers too - if anything the water is too hot....

Our favorite pub in Ely. We have a lot of reasons to say this, number 1 is that it is the location of our first date. They are always kind, and caring. The service is great and the pub does offer our favorite cider, Aspall!

Really disappointing experience. We came for the Sunday lunch and the food was undercooked- the chef seemed to be coming out and telling people that it was the quickest service of his life- seems strange to me to admit that you rushed everyone’s food and then make them pay the same prices. The gravy was watery, the carrots and parsnips were raw and the potatoes were oily. I understand having bad days but it is unacceptable to charge the same prices when you are aware the quality is bad. There are far better places In Cambridgeshire to go for a roast- especially considering this one cost £20 for a single plate of food!!
