The Hereward in East Cambridgeshire

A Quick lunch for my hungry lad after his orthodontic appointment. Easy to order at the Bar & lots of empty tables as to be expected on a Monday. Food was as anticipated & fairly swift to arrive much to my sons delight. Its a place I wouldn't go often, think it could do with upgrading the decor & making it lighter.

This place has seriously gone down hill. Dirty, bad service, an hour for food and the clientele have changed for the worse. Long wait on food due to all the chefs quitting apparently. Manager unavailable. Joke!!!

Went for Sunday lunch and was told no kitchen service for an hour, but still doing takeaway 🙃 🤔

Dj Saturday night was totally rubbish and unprofessional, nowhere near as good as its been over the years previously, playing her own preference of music, also not prepared to play any requests, no music mix of the years just all rap rubbish, been coming here for years but definitely will give it swerve in future

Seems to have gone downhill lately,music played to loud ,not a pub anymore to have a quiet meal and drink ,was always my go to in Ely but not Any more ,but worst is my partner is gluten free ,the staff used to help and advise but not interested anymore ,so In future will be the lamb as gluten free menu and much more knowledgeable staff ,pity as really used to like the hereward and had my best Christmas meal in there .not sure what has happened to it but seems to wan to be a sport/youngsters pub …

The staff are amazing. Particularly mention to Darrshin, who we think was quite new but did amazingly with our order. The food was okay. Ordered burgers, which were missing the onion/gherkin (resolved on our query). Chips were not very fresh, felt like they had been sitting under their hot lamp for a while. Annoying beer-fly problem. They were everywhere whilst trying to eat/drink. Please sort this! Staff brilliant, maybe a bit of attention elsewhere would help this pub.

Unfortunately was told they couldn't offer me any food because I'd asked what was gluten free on the menu. Coeliacs be warned we are not welcome .

To be fair haven't been there for a few years and will not be returning staff friendly quick service food mediocre on the day I visited a lot of food was off the menu so I had to try some thing different which might have made me ill. seems very popular so perhaps I was unlucky.

5 of us went to lunch after 1.5 hours they brought out one starter asked where other 4 were finally got them 20 mins later all served on same plate .Then got so fed up waiting for 2nd course asked for a refund and left shocking

If you want plenty of choice and value for money in an informal atmosphere without having to book or dress up, then this is the place to go.

Nice food in clean and nice environment. Ideal if you want a decent meal in Ely. It's pub food at a decent price. Will use again

Absolutely appalled with the bar staff on how they spoke to this young lady at the bar who wanted to order a drink. The food is great but the bar staff are rude and unwelcoming, I wont be coming here again and neither should anyone else! It is unbelievable how horrible some people can be.

Went for lunch with the family, lovely place with plenty of tvs to watch sports on, darts and pool table. Lovely and warm inside which was a big bonus and food came quick, was hot and lovely. Staff all friendly and good customer service!

I visited this restaurant a couple of occasions for breakfast and lunch with my 7 year old while visiting my Nan, lovely place, decent prices, great food especially value and amazing friendly staff, would 100% recommend

All the staff are super helpful and the service has been amazing and their food is amazing too I would like to shout out to one particular person which is Suzi she works really hard and does her best all the staff are super helpful and I would recommend this fine establishment very happy all round

The atmosphere is relaxing here, food was served quickly and the quality was great. Great selection of gins and my server Sam was very helpful and friendly, would recommend :)

Came down for one of the new Open Mic Thursdays recently and the music was great! Some very good local performers on display! We absolutely need more of these events in Ely!

Went with a friend for breakfast, I had the vegetarian which was delicious, good portion size and fresh, my friend had the traditional and said the same. Staff really friendly, lovely place ,would recommend.

We popped in for a quick lunch , we had burgers and fish&chips and we weren’t disappointed. Decent prices and service was fantastic. Will go again

Had a really nice experience here the staff are friendly and Chris goes out of his way to help. Was really busy as it was new years but still made to feel welcome. Will be back

I came in on a Sunday, it was a pleasant environment. I ordered the biscoff sundae and a young Indian gentleman brought it out, it was amazing they even put a smile made out of marshmallows.

Came in today for a breakfast, great atmosphere and food was lovely. Stevie our server was amazing absolutely lovely. Very smiley and helped us with everything we needed. Thanks Stevie

Great Sunday roast. Brilliant value for money and so tasty. All home cooked and very tasty. Friendly staff all very helpful.

Visited today with my friend and her baby. Extremely friendly staff. We were served by Dee and Stevie who went above and beyond. Will definitely recommend this place to others.

Worse meal I've ever had there. After repeating my order to the bar person several times. The order eventually came out and was the wrong one. I ordered 2 southern fried chicken melt sub. Fish was presented to us. The person serving took the order back. Eventually the correct order arrived, one at a time. The chips on my order were cold and soggy whereas the other chips were over cooked and hard. The filling in the sub was lacking. When collecting our plates the person asked if it was OK, we complained that it wasn't but the waitress wasn't really interested in what the complaint was and said 'I'll tell the kitchen'. Not impressed at all with the service or quality of the food.

I was in Ely with my sister for the Ouse Washes Dance Event. Looking at a few other establishments in town we settled on this pub. From the interior it felt like a Weatherspoons which we like. The pub was busy and several people were eating. We looked around for a free table which was quite hard as there were not many. We decided on one near the window which although vacant hand not been cleared. On going to the bar to order our food I asked if the table could be cleared and cleaned. The barmaid said she would ask someone to come and clear it for us. After waiting roughly a half an hour I decided to visit the toilet. On returning to our table it was still occupied by smelly plates and had still not been cleared. I went to the bar to ask again, thinking that our food would soon arrive. But all the bar staff were occupied. So, I took a spray cleaner and sponge from the end of the bar and cleaned the table myself. Something I have never needed to do before in a bar or restaurant. This left the table a bit wet, I returned to the bar to ask for some kitchen roll to dry the table. The response from one of the bar staff was, I’ll try and get some for you in a bit. I explained that I had asked for the table to be cleared and cleaned. At this point I noticed some napkins on the bar and took a few of those to dry the table. The plates containing the previous peoples food I put on the nearby windowsill as there was nowhere else to put them. A short while later, obviously prompted by this bar staff member, a lady turned up to clean and clear the table. She was not happy that I had put the dirty plates on the windowsill. And then she started to spray cleaner onto the table surface. I told her to stop, and that she was too late because I had already cleaned it. She took the dirty plates away offering nothing by way of an apology. Shortly our meal of Scampi, Chips and Peas arrived. I couldn’t believe my eyes, there were roughly the standard amount of pieces of Scampi. But a measly tablespoon of peas and very few chips. We checked the menu again to see if we had ordered a child’s portion by mistake. But no, this wasn’t the case. The food was fine, the Scampi very nice, but the portions of chips and peas criminal. On talking to the landlord before our departure I voiced my unhappiness with the service and food quantity. There was very little by way of an apology, only that they were short staffed. He did offer us coffees by way of making things right. I declined his offer. What I wanted was a clean table to eat at, and a meal equivalent in value to what I paid for. Neither were in evidence at this establishment . In a nutshell, terrible service, poor value for money. Avoid at all costs.

Good atmosphere, the lovely lady behind the bar was always smiling and cheerful. She was polite and accomplished in doing her job

Family friendly with happy helpful staff. We went for a family meal. A range of dishes to suit all ages and tastes. My husband enjoyed the cask ale choices!!! With a good range of cocktails, especially for drivers 😁! Chris was great with our booking and accommodated all our varying needs. See you next time we visit!!!

Hereward ely is a lovely place to eat . The service was excellent.

Coffe machine not working. They can offer a instant coffe for the same price. What is a bad joke. I would get a nespreso machine for £35 and could make a similar quality cappucino and latte for the same price untill the coffe machine is not working. Price of the coffee machine would be back in a week. Could be better to keep one in storage in case if the coffee machine is out of order.

Great location to watch sport. friendly staff, and overall good atmosphere to chill with friends and family.

Went out for dinner with my partner ordered our food the food had come out and messed my order up so complained and they took it away brought it back but had still messed the order up my partners food was disgusting as well filled the drinks up to the top so was spilling out all over the place no point in going out for a meal with my partner when we can't even eat together when it was brought up to the person behind the bar she just wanted to blame the kitchen staff ended up getting a refund for one of the meals and ended up going somewhere else to get something to eat as was bloody starving

Booked on website for bottomless brunch. Turned up and were told they don't do bottomless brunch. They claim had rang me but no messages. So far they have still got my £10 deposit. Do not recommend.

Popped in for lunch with kids. Nice looking sports pub and we found seating easily. Bar staff friendly but waiting staff member looked miserable and just grunted at us. Couldn’t order using app as this didn’t work. Food came- burgers were nice enough but turkey pie was stone cold inside. Sent back, no immediate apology. When it arrived back it was hot but chips were cold. Kids mash was rock solid. We were starving so just got on with it, but poor overall and wouldn’t bother coming back.

Been to many stonegate pubs and this is not one I would recommend. New land lady doesn't seem to approachable from what I have seen

Food is nice but the service is less desirable. I bought meals for my family with kids meal and coffee. After paying they moved on to another costumer without telling me anything so I went back to my table. The coffee was served when i was supposed to get it from the bar, which I am grateful. But when I asked for my child’s drink they told me I should have waited and get it from the bar. But how can I when they were already serving another customer. It was frustrating that we had to wait then being told like that, making me feel I was in the wrong. We were not served well!!

Didn't eat so I can't comment, however the real ale was good and cheaper than most places. I had broadside which was good. Bit noisy on Sunday night with the singer, but other than that I visited about three times in the week I was there. Previously I wouldn't drink there when I lived in Ely. But I've changed my opinion

Had a lovely meal at the Hereward today. Fantastic value for money and one of the best burgers I have tasted for a long time. The pub was very busy but the service and staff were excellent. We were quick to be served and tables were cleared away promptly and cleaned. Would certainly recommend and return when next in Ely.

Went for lunch today. Absolutely packed. Have to hold my hands up to Suzie. Not enough staff!! Suzie was fun off her feet but as always she was as friendly as ever. However seemed a bit unfair that she was on her own. Thank you Suzie

Great place. Friendly staff. Only popped in for a couple of pints. Staff difused the fight between 2 older men a tad drunk but sent on there separate ways. Added to the entertainment that I know all too well about the bar industry. :)

The staff and the service were great but the food is dreadful. I know it's cheap but used to be a lot better.

I had to wait for my Kebab to be cooked up the road so we stopped and had a beer. It was in really good condition (Butcombe Haka) and as it was warmer outside, we sat on the seats outside and watched Ely go by. A great selection of real ale as well.

Went in for bite to eat and catch football. Had really good service Ashley (I think her name was). Very friendly and more than happy to help with recommendations on the food. Nice seating in the booth to catch Arsenal game with food and drink.

Disappointing - as website states Sunday Roasts! however, The Hereward does not do Sunday Lunch anymore and head office need to change the website. Majority of groups meals ok, as expected. However, a couple were lacking of which we complained. though we would have preferred all meals to be as expected. The Staff were outstanding on trying to rectify everything and could not have been more apologetic. Which not all establishments would be. So, for that, I am very grateful and thank the front service staff, as they could not have done more.

Food was terrible, dry, cold and bland. Will not return. When I enquired about the dry chicken I was told it comes in pre cooked and is just warmed up. Give this place a miss

It was nice and quiet and the food was great and a good price for burger and a drink!

We only popped in for a quick drink but was impressed with the quick and friendly service. The round was a fiver less than the previous pub we had called in which in this day and age was a big plus point. It was good to see how busy it was here and people seems to be enjoying their food.

Great food however service for drinks was disappointing. Ordered on app and waited 30mins for drinks. Got food and ate before drinks. I did tell the waitress 3 times. The bar staff were slow and looked understaffed.

We sat down and after a couple of minutes a woman who appeared to be the manageress told us that they were not serving any more meals because they were short staffed. She was extremely curt to the point of rudeness - no apology was offered. We have been there with the same friends last year and had received excellent service and good food. Very disappointing.

After many years of avoiding the Harewood after some poor experiences we decided to give it another go and what a pleasant surprise under the new landlady very nice atmosphere and busy pub. We only had the small plates but they were very good and good size portions. I wish the new management good luck and keep up the good work we will definitely be back.many thanks

Love this pub. Serves good pub grub for a reasonable price, good choice of drinks, air con (life saver when camping in summer) and they allow dogs! Which is great for our little dog.

Popped in yesterday with a friend. The food was ok for the price, good portions and a good deal with the drink included. My only criticism would be that the chips were a little underdone. Unfortunately what ruined the experience was that the toilets were pretty grim (unclean, one cubicle didn't lock, one had no paper) and the poor attitude of the lady behind the bar. We ordered via the app, our food came out and we asked our server for our drinks. She had a very poor attitude towards us when finding out we'd ordered on the app, apparently the orders weren't coming through to her - not really our fault! She was super snippy and then proceeded to further take her frustration out on her colleague who seemed like he was new. I appreciate working in hospitality is hard work but no need to speak to customers and colleagues with such disdain!

Terrible. Yet another change in management and sadly not for the better. The food was average quality but well cooked, and the service was poor, as a check back wasn't performed. The atmosphere was depressing, with thankfully quiet yet dreadful music. Which only highlighted the rest of the room noise. Any louder and I think I would've ordered a noose and a private room. Ironically I wouldn't hang about in this hole. The bar staff and chef are however lacking in compliments as they are clearly holding this place together. Unsung heroes to the service industry. Making up for what is lost under the new holding manager - who will surely follow suit with the rest of the jokers who have tried to run this place when they can hardly walk.

Steak was so tuff we couldn't cut it, sent back and replaced with another one we couldn't cut, so chewy, won't bother with this place again, wasted over £45!!!!!!

Service was great. Disappointed no steak available and no plain burger but what we did have was nice.

The food isn't good, I've given it a few chances too, ordering different things on different days. Staff are friendly.

Ordered a simple bacon roll and came out with no butter on dry bread. Also the bread had clearly been sat out under hot lamp as was dry to touch and the bacon somehow was stone cold. Cooked on a chargrill tasted only of burnt. Very disappointing used to love the breakfast wrap here but they now only serve about 6 breakfast items and I wouldn’t go back

I came in for brunch on Monday feeling hot and bothered from the heat and despite the my short tempered manner I want to praise the staff for their professionalism and customer focus. I would particularly like to thank Suzi, please forgive me if the spelling is wrong, her friendly manner and attitude towards making my visit the best it could be meant the bar was literally an oasis for me. Visiting family for a while in Ely, decided to try out the local pub. Food was good but the best part was the service & atmosphere of the Hereward. Chatted to one of the staff - Felix - he was very friendly and told me he’d be off to university in London (my home!) to become a video game artist. I wish him well.

Excellent food! Hot and tasty. Mmmm… Service and dashing looks from Felix and Bradley was absolutely amazing!!! Would highly recommend!! Incredibly handsome staff… 🤩🤩🥰

They are very lucky to have such a good team like Suzi, Steve and chef Chris. They are always smiling and and can't do enough for you. Love their breakfasts.

Very similar to a Wetherspoons really but not as extensive a menu but ample, little more expensive though.
