The Hereward in East Cambridgeshire

This pub is run by friendly people. We had a very nice lunch here. My son ordered 3 small plates for his lunch and couldn't believe how big the portions were. We had to help him out and he's an adult! I had a tasty wrap with which I was able to have salad instead of chips but I had some of my husband's chips and they were lovely. Our lunch was very reasonably priced and included a drink. Not fine dining by any means, just a decent, friendly pub with reasonably priced food.

Thanks to Danica for making this drink for me, the Cranberry juice really compliments the Pinot Blanc well. Suzie has been keeping the tables clean and tidy and Hannah made me a delicious Bailey's latte on entry. Absolutely fantastic service 😁💜🖤

I came into the Hereward today for a drink with friends. We were served by a member of the bar staff called Scott who was extremely friendly and polite. He went out of his way to help us sign up to the mixr app which meant we got a free drink. His manners and attitude towards his work was outstanding and he made us feel very welcome! He definitely deserves a 5 star review! There is no question me and my friends will definitely be coming back again!

Poor overall, popped in for light bite and a drink, trying to use their app is horrible, but not as horrible as the 'green' mash that came out. It was crusty and actually green, obviously this was sent back then sunshine from the kitchen came out and said 'all the mash isn't good' (!) do we want something else. My daughter chose chips instead which were fine and then halfway through our food I had to ask again for our drinks too be served (which were ordered at the same time as our food) and they finally came about 5 minutes later - unfortunately 2 of the glasses were so disgustingly dirty that we elected to drink from the bottles instead of using filthy glassware. Won't be returning.

We had been here previously and had a good experience. The evening started well but sadly declined rapidly. The main course was average at best the vegetables were not fresh. No one asked us if we're happy. No one asked if we would like a pudding. There appeared to be no staff in the vincity. If there were we were ignored. I even had to search for someone to pay our bill. Highly unlikely to return.

Don't leave a bad review about any members of staff as you will be banned from the pub. The place has gone downhill lately in lots of aspects

We had previously good experience here but sadly not this time. The food was average at best. The service started off well but declined rapidly. After the main course received absolutely no service. No one asked if we were happy never offered a pudding. I even had to chase around to pay my bill. Very unlikely to return.

Had a meal which was absolutely amazing. Complements to the chef James who cooks on a Monday evening. We shall certainly return again. The bar tenders Ashly and Danica who were also very welcoming and friendly

We had lunch at Hereward for the first time while visiting Ely. We ordered very tasty small plates. The service was outstanding. It was a lovely afternoon!

Food was ok some of our meals was like warm but and looked like dogs dinner especially with the bowls they were served in didn't say anything as we ordered from the sides menu we ordered some chips chicken wings and prawn tempura we had to wait 40 minutes for this we didn't want to wait any longer. And they had football on which I don't mind but when all 10 TVs are blaring at once really not good couldn't hear ourselves speak and had to take my hearing aid out. But the staff were nice and it looked clean inside and out. Will go back again. Just to see if it was because of the football although wasn't to busy. And we have been there before and didn't have issues with food and time.

Just had one drink each - it was OK.....

The chef Oscar did very well with my custom order of Chicken Goujons, Waffle fries and chocolate sauce. Cooked to perfection and an oddly delicious combo.

Had the spicy chicken burger cooked by Sean and Jake, tasted amazing! Very good food and service.

Shame this place charges there regular customers premium prices to drink on a weekend 🤔

We came to the Hereward on Sunday as a party of 5, the food was lovely, special thanks to Baz and Oscar in the kitchen who catered for our needs and also Ashley behind the bar who recommended a lovely rose that I really enjoyed. Service was very good and everyone was very polite.

Farooque looked after us so well Ladies behind the bar were a good laugh. We recommend and will be back

What a lovely pub in a lovely area! We shared some chicken goujons, they were lovely! The staff were happy and helpful, the Bar maid Stevie advised us on how to get to the cathedral to walk off our lovely lunch! Great visit! And will be back for the football! & hopefully more sight seeing! 5/5!

First time out in Ely and we had a few beers here, watched the football and had some lunch. Nice spacious pub, loads of screens, pool table and darts board. Loads of beers to choose from and the food menu has plenty on it.

We came here because it looked from outside. The staff were very nice, but we had coke zero. Unfortunately, it was zero bubbles, zero taste... not the best start. We waited ages for our meal and it wasn't even busy. When it did eventually arrive, it looked like a child's meal. Certainly not value for money. The rule of ten was evident, around ten chips, ten scampi, ten baked beans, ten seconds in the microwave, for ten quid, .....and then ten extra minutes waiting on the optional onion rings they'd forgotten. Briskly followed by ten apologies. What food there was was very nice, just a shame I am not a child. I gave stars for effort, and the staff may have been short due to the bank holiday. But in the service industry, these are the days you make your money. I hope I caught them on a bad day as this could be a lovely place to stop.

I really liked the restaurant, the food and the ambience. I also really liked that they had television screens everywhere, even on each high table they had a screen for each one. If you want to eat well, at a good price, and watch any sport, this is your place. I recommend it 100%

Visited here for lunch with family and had an awful experience. The lady serving behind the bar was rude and did not listen when we placed our order. This then meant one of our members food didn’t arrive and they were left hungry. There was no apology for this and the waitress was incredibly rude about it making us feel very uncomfortable. The food we did have was okay but the service we received was so rubbish it really left a bad taste. The tables were also not very clean and despite having been “cleaned” were still covered in crumbs and sticky marks. Would not come back here.

For years we have enjoyed having lunch at the Hereward. Service was quick and it was good value. However yesterday after paying over £25 for two cokes, a chicken wrap and scampi & waffle fries and a much longer wait than usual, we were presented with cold & unappetising plates of food. Wish now we had sent the food back (curse British politeness!) but we will try another pub next time. A shame.

It takes about an hour to order a meal.

Good location. Food was good and a selection of beers available. It was a bit noisy with loud music at times.

Friendly place that is good for families, our food took a while but everyone enjoyed what they were served.

My friend and I stopped in for lunch during the week, and we enjoyed a well cooked fish and chips, with a pint of London Pride, served by Suzi. The food and beers were excellent, and so was the service provided by Suzi. She was courteous and attentive, and made our dining experience all the more enjoyable. Thank you Suzi!

I’m absolutely appalled by the service at this place, the waiter was rude and had no interest in the job and not great communication skills, my food did not even come out with the dip so I just had dry prawns not only that I asked for the sauce and was made to feel like an inconvenience, which then we had to ask again and was told ‘sorry I forgot’. The food was rubbish and still took half hour to come out.

The blonde lady was very helpful and attentive to my needs, this is best if they converse with the customer as this make you feel at home. I wish some.of the younger ones.would do the same. She also does a good job cleaning and resetting the tables for use. This person should be recommended for a monthly award.

Bar staff very helpful and very polite

Great classic British pub - often in for tasty beers and good food. Popping in with mates or family, never disappoints. Go back time and again.

Came out for the regular few drinks with the Mrs, and the weather was fairly grim but a lovely young chap by the name of Farouk came to greet us and had a nice chat with him. Really improves the day when staff look motivated and rather than lingering around have a little chat and make the customers feel at home. Also introduced us to the Mixer app so we can get points for drinking.

A lovely pub with a great selection of drinks and food on offer. Friendly staff, Christopher was particularly helpful finding a suitable table for me and my friends. I will be coming back again.

We had to wait a very long time for a breakfast when we received it the only thing warm was the plate food was luke warm

A Quick lunch for my hungry lad after his orthodontic appointment. Easy to order at the Bar & lots of empty tables as to be expected on a Monday. Food was as anticipated & fairly swift to arrive much to my sons delight. Its a place I wouldn't go often, think it could do with upgrading the decor & making it lighter.

This place has seriously gone down hill. Dirty, bad service, an hour for food and the clientele have changed for the worse. Long wait on food due to all the chefs quitting apparently. Manager unavailable. Joke!!!

Dj Saturday night was totally rubbish and unprofessional, nowhere near as good as its been over the years previously, playing her own preference of music, also not prepared to play any requests, no music mix of the years just all rap rubbish, been coming here for years but definitely will give it swerve in future

Seems to have gone downhill lately,music played to loud ,not a pub anymore to have a quiet meal and drink ,was always my go to in Ely but not Any more ,but worst is my partner is gluten free ,the staff used to help and advise but not interested anymore ,so In future will be the lamb as gluten free menu and much more knowledgeable staff ,pity as really used to like the hereward and had my best Christmas meal in there .not sure what has happened to it but seems to wan to be a sport/youngsters pub …

The staff are amazing. Particularly mention to Darrshin, who we think was quite new but did amazingly with our order. The food was okay. Ordered burgers, which were missing the onion/gherkin (resolved on our query). Chips were not very fresh, felt like they had been sitting under their hot lamp for a while. Annoying beer-fly problem. They were everywhere whilst trying to eat/drink. Please sort this! Staff brilliant, maybe a bit of attention elsewhere would help this pub.

Unfortunately was told they couldn't offer me any food because I'd asked what was gluten free on the menu. Coeliacs be warned we are not welcome .

To be fair haven't been there for a few years and will not be returning staff friendly quick service food mediocre on the day I visited a lot of food was off the menu so I had to try some thing different which might have made me ill. seems very popular so perhaps I was unlucky.

5 of us went to lunch after 1.5 hours they brought out one starter asked where other 4 were finally got them 20 mins later all served on same plate .Then got so fed up waiting for 2nd course asked for a refund and left shocking

If you want plenty of choice and value for money in an informal atmosphere without having to book or dress up, then this is the place to go.

Nice food in clean and nice environment. Ideal if you want a decent meal in Ely. It's pub food at a decent price. Will use again

Absolutely appalled with the bar staff on how they spoke to this young lady at the bar who wanted to order a drink. The food is great but the bar staff are rude and unwelcoming, I wont be coming here again and neither should anyone else! It is unbelievable how horrible some people can be.

Went for lunch with the family, lovely place with plenty of tvs to watch sports on, darts and pool table. Lovely and warm inside which was a big bonus and food came quick, was hot and lovely. Staff all friendly and good customer service!

I visited this restaurant a couple of occasions for breakfast and lunch with my 7 year old while visiting my Nan, lovely place, decent prices, great food especially value and amazing friendly staff, would 100% recommend

All the staff are super helpful and the service has been amazing and their food is amazing too I would like to shout out to one particular person which is Suzi she works really hard and does her best all the staff are super helpful and I would recommend this fine establishment very happy all round

Came down for one of the new Open Mic Thursdays recently and the music was great! Some very good local performers on display! We absolutely need more of these events in Ely!

The atmosphere is relaxing here, food was served quickly and the quality was great. Great selection of gins and my server Sam was very helpful and friendly, would recommend :)

Went with a friend for breakfast, I had the vegetarian which was delicious, good portion size and fresh, my friend had the traditional and said the same. Staff really friendly, lovely place ,would recommend.

I came in on a Sunday, it was a pleasant environment. I ordered the biscoff sundae and a young Indian gentleman brought it out, it was amazing they even put a smile made out of marshmallows.

Came in today for a breakfast, great atmosphere and food was lovely. Stevie our server was amazing absolutely lovely. Very smiley and helped us with everything we needed. Thanks Stevie

Worse meal I've ever had there. After repeating my order to the bar person several times. The order eventually came out and was the wrong one. I ordered 2 southern fried chicken melt sub. Fish was presented to us. The person serving took the order back. Eventually the correct order arrived, one at a time. The chips on my order were cold and soggy whereas the other chips were over cooked and hard. The filling in the sub was lacking. When collecting our plates the person asked if it was OK, we complained that it wasn't but the waitress wasn't really interested in what the complaint was and said 'I'll tell the kitchen'. Not impressed at all with the service or quality of the food.

I was in Ely with my sister for the Ouse Washes Dance Event. Looking at a few other establishments in town we settled on this pub. From the interior it felt like a Weatherspoons which we like. The pub was busy and several people were eating. We looked around for a free table which was quite hard as there were not many. We decided on one near the window which although vacant hand not been cleared. On going to the bar to order our food I asked if the table could be cleared and cleaned. The barmaid said she would ask someone to come and clear it for us. After waiting roughly a half an hour I decided to visit the toilet. On returning to our table it was still occupied by smelly plates and had still not been cleared. I went to the bar to ask again, thinking that our food would soon arrive. But all the bar staff were occupied. So, I took a spray cleaner and sponge from the end of the bar and cleaned the table myself. Something I have never needed to do before in a bar or restaurant. This left the table a bit wet, I returned to the bar to ask for some kitchen roll to dry the table. The response from one of the bar staff was, I’ll try and get some for you in a bit. I explained that I had asked for the table to be cleared and cleaned. At this point I noticed some napkins on the bar and took a few of those to dry the table. The plates containing the previous peoples food I put on the nearby windowsill as there was nowhere else to put them. A short while later, obviously prompted by this bar staff member, a lady turned up to clean and clear the table. She was not happy that I had put the dirty plates on the windowsill. And then she started to spray cleaner onto the table surface. I told her to stop, and that she was too late because I had already cleaned it. She took the dirty plates away offering nothing by way of an apology. Shortly our meal of Scampi, Chips and Peas arrived. I couldn’t believe my eyes, there were roughly the standard amount of pieces of Scampi. But a measly tablespoon of peas and very few chips. We checked the menu again to see if we had ordered a child’s portion by mistake. But no, this wasn’t the case. The food was fine, the Scampi very nice, but the portions of chips and peas criminal. On talking to the landlord before our departure I voiced my unhappiness with the service and food quantity. There was very little by way of an apology, only that they were short staffed. He did offer us coffees by way of making things right. I declined his offer. What I wanted was a clean table to eat at, and a meal equivalent in value to what I paid for. Neither were in evidence at this establishment . In a nutshell, terrible service, poor value for money. Avoid at all costs.

Family friendly with happy helpful staff. We went for a family meal. A range of dishes to suit all ages and tastes. My husband enjoyed the cask ale choices!!! With a good range of cocktails, especially for drivers 😁! Chris was great with our booking and accommodated all our varying needs. See you next time we visit!!!

Hereward ely is a lovely place to eat . The service was excellent.

Coffe machine not working. They can offer a instant coffe for the same price. What is a bad joke. I would get a nespreso machine for £35 and could make a similar quality cappucino and latte for the same price untill the coffe machine is not working. Price of the coffee machine would be back in a week. Could be better to keep one in storage in case if the coffee machine is out of order.

Great location to watch sport. friendly staff, and overall good atmosphere to chill with friends and family.

Went out for dinner with my partner ordered our food the food had come out and messed my order up so complained and they took it away brought it back but had still messed the order up my partners food was disgusting as well filled the drinks up to the top so was spilling out all over the place no point in going out for a meal with my partner when we can't even eat together when it was brought up to the person behind the bar she just wanted to blame the kitchen staff ended up getting a refund for one of the meals and ended up going somewhere else to get something to eat as was bloody starving

Booked on website for bottomless brunch. Turned up and were told they don't do bottomless brunch. They claim had rang me but no messages. So far they have still got my £10 deposit. Do not recommend.

Popped in for lunch with kids. Nice looking sports pub and we found seating easily. Bar staff friendly but waiting staff member looked miserable and just grunted at us. Couldn’t order using app as this didn’t work. Food came- burgers were nice enough but turkey pie was stone cold inside. Sent back, no immediate apology. When it arrived back it was hot but chips were cold. Kids mash was rock solid. We were starving so just got on with it, but poor overall and wouldn’t bother coming back.

Been to many stonegate pubs and this is not one I would recommend. New land lady doesn't seem to approachable from what I have seen

Food is nice but the service is less desirable. I bought meals for my family with kids meal and coffee. After paying they moved on to another costumer without telling me anything so I went back to my table. The coffee was served when i was supposed to get it from the bar, which I am grateful. But when I asked for my child’s drink they told me I should have waited and get it from the bar. But how can I when they were already serving another customer. It was frustrating that we had to wait then being told like that, making me feel I was in the wrong. We were not served well!!
