First time visit to The High Flyer in Ely. Was looking for somewhere unfussy with easy access and good food, and The High Flyer gave us exactly that. From the minute we arrived, we were looked after perfectly. The receptionist spotted that I was walking with crutches and immediately changed our booked table to one closer to the carvery area, and away from any steps/stairs. I thought that was a really rice touch. The food was excellent given that it was quite busy in the restaurant and the carvery was in high demand. We’ve been to carveries before where everything is bland and has no taste - that was definitely not the case here. Every single item was tasty and well cooked (not boiled to death like some places). The red cabbage was particularly enjoyable as was the cauliflower cheese and all the meat choices - we had turkey, beef and gammon. Service was excellent and our waitress was lovely. Anastasiia was very attentive and alert to our needs for drinks and desserts. She responded quickly and politely when we needed her and was worth the extra tip we gave her. We’ll definitely be going back especially as they do the carvery every day of the week, not just Sundays.

Very enjoyable experience today with an elderly family members birthday treat. Lovely food and great staff who seem to be passionate about their jobs and and make a very professional effort to please their customers. I think there's another branch of this pub in hemel Hempstead. If you're looking for somewhere good to eat in Ely don't overlook this place plenty of parking very close by. And lots of room inside the High Flyer

My wife and I took an extra day off work and went for lunch on what we knew would be a quiet day (the first working day after Easter) so, understandably, the atmosphere was not what it would have been over the preceding weekend - but that didn't matter to us, as the food and service were amazing! Fantastic lamb shank, with pies and veg on the carvery (they always do pies on Tuesdays), and great, friendly service from Anastasia, who looked after us well during our visit. We'll definitely be back - next time on a different day of the week so we can try the meat carvery!

Service good as usual, carvery also very good as always, however the Easter Special menu desserts were nowhere near as good as the normal menu desserts, the hot cross bun bread and butter pudding tasted like a hot cross bun that had just been covered in custard. Your normal desserts are excellent, stick with them.

Visited here over Easter so paid a premium for the privilege and was really disappointed with our meal. The service was absolutely appalling and the food was really poor. We were sat down promptly and then left for a good 15 minutes before being asked for our drinks order, followed by a further 15 minutes before we got the drinks served. The rest of the meal didn't go any better. We had to wait until instructed to go up to the carvery, even though there was no queue and the restaurant was mostly empty. The two waitresses on staff seemed completely disinterested in serving us, after we finished our meals our empty plates sat in front of us for a good 30 minutes and then we had to wait even longer after before making our desserts order. The Carvery itself was OK, although the red cabbage was bitter and like mush. The potatoes were somehow too sweet. The meat served was faultless, was a very good cut and portion size. The chef carving was also very nice. The desserts however were terrible. I had an exclusive Easter sundae which was served in a tiny glass with stale brownies inside and a few crumbs of chocolate on top and a measly portion of ice cream. The other members of my family had an Eton mess with no meringue in it and clearly frozen fruits with virtually no cream and the bread and butter pudding which was literally just a hot cross bun with tasteless custard on top. After waiting patiently for 20 minutes to ask for the bill and no servers in sight, i went to find our waitress and she was just sat having a chat with the kitchen staff. Unprofessional and disappointing to say the least. All of this and we paid £27 a head for 6 people. Leaving with a massive big bill for a very sub-par experience. We will not be returning anytime soon. If you want a carvery, go to Toby's. Its better quality for half the price.

I was served today by Anastasiia who was so welcoming and had an infectious smile on her face…she’s a credit to the high flyer and it was very special to see her helping an elderly woman by walking arm in arm with her, not because she had too, but because she cared and wanted to. The carvery came a good second and it was good they had gluten free options. It would be nice if more of the vegetable side dishes were made without wheat flour, but all in all I left pretty stuffed and enjoyed my time at the high flyer today.

Came here for a birthday celebration. Highly recommend booking as the place was very busy. Most of us had sunday carvery with a couple kids menu orders. Carvery was good, and food was fresh with a good selection, the staff kept it replensihed throughout the service. Good price for the food and menu choices. Slightly disappointed on kids menu, as even the fish fingers were in batter and not breadcrumb, so for the toddler age range it was hard to navigate a healthier choice, and on the side you could strictly only choose 1, so couldnt get more vegetables on their plate for variety. Overall would return, and where we were seated as a big group, it was lovely and spacious.

I read the recent poor reviews and wondered if they were regarding the same place my wife and I visited this evening for a meal. They were but bore no relationship to the hospitality, service or the food we received. What restaurant would apologise that 1 item in the carvery was not available but told you can have extra meat "as much as you like" and I did. The Yorkshire puds were out of this world " all 5 of them" ha ha. Bottom line is, I thinks those people who did not get the same experience we got this evening were an exception rather than the rule. Although the pub is a 40 minute drive from where I live, it was well worth it and we will definitely make that journey time and time again.

Walked in, barely welcomed by the waitress, sat at a table right down the bottom end of the restaurant, with then to be told by the waitress she’ll be back to take drinks but only to myself no when all of the party was sat down. Carvery was out, meat looked very dry and had been sat there ages. We then ordered drinks and food. Drinks came to which once was all on the table, waitress said there no ice. 20 mins food came, meals was sparse, barely any chips, burger had no flavour, hunters chicken was not hot with a big blob of bbq sauce on the top, the coleslaw was in a small pot, with a teaspoon of coleslaw- when challenged the chef had not made anymore so we was given what was left. Waitress at the end (we had 3) was very polite though. We sat there for 40 minutes awaiting the bill to arrive, never came so we paid at the top and left. One member of the party was very poorly all night after the meal. Will NOT be coming back, bad service, terrible food and over all not welcoming place it’s made out to be.

Location was ok for a stay in Ely, pretty central but a High Flyer this is not. We stayed in the 'Deluxe' room but what made it deluxe puzzled me, unless it was the giant TV. Bed sheet stained, lamps not working and bar closed at 10pm (Mondays apparently) but not informed of times prior to this. Breakfast only commences at 10am and if you want to speak to anyone between these times good luck, as the place is locked up (reception/bar) and no one around. The only thing open is the door to the street, which is left unlocked permanently including overnight and the keypad door to the rooms corridor was always ajar whenever we came in or out. The stairs up to the rooms had not been hoovered either as debris looked as though it had been there a while. We had other family in another' ordinary' room who said it was not cleaned well, especially around the carpet edges and had a hole at the back of the sink in the dusty bathroom. We didn't eat here but had a couple of drinks one evening when the bar was open to 10.30 only to be asked for last orders at 10pm... All in all this was not a great experience and won't be staying there again. There are better places in Ely to stay.

We used to be regulars, not been for a while and won’t be returning. Sunday lunch was awful. Roast potatoes insipid and only just cooked, cauliflower cheese overcooked mush, leaks the same. The other veg was rock hard and raw. Roast beef was so tough it was impossible to eat. Gravy was like water. We didn’t have a desert as that would have been good money after bad. The pub was bitterly cold and they tried to charge us for a decaffeinated coffee they had run out of. This was mentioned and ignored when we paid, only the missing coffee was removed. Go elsewhere, we will.

So, to give context. I’m a business traveller for the last 35 years. So, The High Flyer… Firstly, food Good “home grub” is it going to win a Michelin star, no, is it good honest food, yes. The room, it’s an old building with a modern makeover, so it’s not a picture perfect “Hilton” built in the last few years, but it’s very comfy, well appointed and just enjoy to little idiosyncratic bits. Booked for Christmas Day lunch 2024 for myself and my husband, having done this in previous years and having had a lovely experience, we were really looking forward to coming again. Unfortunately our visit this time was extremely disappointing, we were seated in the bar area rather than the restaurant, which was cold and not very festive at all. The service was not great and the food was very disappointing, expecially for my husband who has to have gluten free food. Certainly not worth £75 a head and I doubt we will be coming here again. Oh dear Highflyer Ely. From the looks of your reviews you had a terrible December 2024. Overworked staff, staff that had no idea or direction on what they were doing etc. We attend here for a family meal. While the food was ok the service was appalling. No table service, no christmas atmosphere. Then to be told we didn't opt in for a festive menu so we didn't get crackers! It's Christmas, surely that's a given!. Our seating arrangements were completely messed up leaving myself suggesting I have my meal in my lap! Then to be asked if we want dessert and coffees but only have the table for another 20 minutes really rounded things off nicely! NOT! And should we have the nerve to complain after spending a small fortune the manager comes back with nothing but excuses and puts the blame back on the customer! How can ALL the customers in December be wrong!? With responses like that from management it's no wonder people are escalating concerns to head office!!!!

Booked here for four for christmas dinner at 75.00 a head. When we first arrived the table was extremely sticky so I asked for it to be wiped down, the cloth used had hairs all over it. The people next to us arrived after us yet were served their fresh bread and drinks. While we sat there. We then were served our starter. The prawn cocktail was supposed to be king prawn but was small fishy prawns. My daughters French onion soup had a hair in it. So that was not ate of course. The 2nd course the carvery they were a little stingy with the meat. And all of the food looked as though it had been sat out a very long time. The roast potatoes were sat in about 2 inches of grease and were extremely hard and dry. The Yorkshires was overcooked and hard. And not much choice for veggies. The 3rd course was toffee apple crumble and we were served some sort of apples which were raw with raw flour on top.with a lumpy custard. Not crumble at all. AGAIN my daughters had a hair on hers. None of us ate this. We traveled from cambridge which took 25-30 minutes to be served a meal which was a complete let down. After complaining they did give us our drinks for free. But it was a little too late at that point as we didn't come there for the drinks but for our Xmas dinner at again 75.00 a head. Then to top it all off 3/4 guests became extremely ill with food poisoning after the visit. NOT COOL. Thinking of reporting them to the FSA as well as environmental health. Such a shame.

It’s Christmas evening as I write this. We’ve been home for about half an hour and finally I have calmed down. We booked our lunch for 3pm and we were a little early so asked to sit in the bar area and maybe order a drink. The bar staff looked nice and tidy and were polite when they did get to serve us. We were the only people in the queue. We sat at a table which could only be described as sticky and whilst others came in and were seated we seemed to be forgotten. eventually we were seated and after a while served our starters. We all had pate served on a bed of watercress. Quite frankly I do not like to find slimy leaves nestled in my food. They came after a wait to ask how the portion of fillet steak should be cooked and eventually we were told to go to the carvery for the two roast meals. By this time it was past 4. As we stood there I said I hope that is not the steak for our son sitting in the servery. The manager was standing directly in front of it we were waiting over 10 minutes for our meat and as we got that the steak was taken to our son. We dished ourselves veg and somebody unknown to me commented about the gravy slopped round the serving pan. We went back with this food and found of course that the steak was cold and pushed to one side. I don’t know about anybody else but I tend to have been brought up to believe both hot and roast food should be served hot. I will say that a replacement was offered for the steak but by this time nearly an hour and a half had flown by in a restaurant serving Xmas lunch that had no atmosphere at all. A lovely waitress came to our table and when she felt the food on my plate she agreed it was cold. She did seem very sorry about our experience. We didn’t even bother to stay for our dessert. For a restaurant manager the guy was untidy in dress and it follows untidy in management. We thought we were going to repeat the experience of last year. The place was run by a lovely lady. She alone made it feel festive. The food was good and the service seamless. Last year we would have rated the trip five stars and excellent from start to finish. This year I am lying when one star is given. It just does not deserve it.

I am extremely disappointed with my stay at this hotel. The room was far from clean—there was a thick layer of dust along the edges and the bedspread had visible stains. The room was also uncomfortably cold and when we tried to use the electric heater, it began to beep, making it unusable. The bathroom was another issue entirely. My husband had to remove the shower trap as it seemed like the water was about to overflow and what he found underneath was shocking -completely filthy. The kettle was so heavily scaled that it was unusable and the cups and glasses were not properly cleaned. The only redeeming feature was the lady on reception in the evening, who was very helpful. She assisted us in getting connected to the Wi-Fi and clarified some checkout details, which we appreciated. However, despite her efforts, the overall poor cleanliness and maintenance of the hotel made this stay one to forget. I would not recommend this hotel. Food was average and the carvery was tepid. We have been here many times for food so this further added to the disappointment.

I want to start by saying that the staff here are really friendly and very accommodating, but the food (especially as someone who doesn't eat meat) has meant I had to give it a 3 star rating. It's not great for vegetarians, especially at Christmas. If you don't like mushrooms or brie you're going to be out of luck. Also, at the carvery this weekend they were using the same tongs to serve meat as they were using for roast potatoes which is such a basic error to make. I had to point this out to them. There was also no vegetarian gravy available and it had to be requested. However all the sides - potatoes, parsnips, cauliflower cheese etc. - were lovely. Lastly the winter Eton mess was frankly terrible. It should be made with cream that has been whipped but the texture was watery like it had been made with thin yoghurt. Really disappointing. My friends also said that their Christmas pudding tasted like soap.

Wasn’t offered a sweet after a meal but told we had 30 minutes left as the tables were booked after us ! The whole experience was ridiculous!! Met a friend for dinner in this lovely pub. One area is for afternoon tea and the other laid for dinner. We were shown to our table and ordered drinks , which came quickly. We both chose the carvery. The choice of meat was turkey, beef or pork with stuffing and sausages, which were served. We helped ourselves to roast potatoes, roast parsnips, braised red cabbage, huge homemade Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, carrots, broccoli and cabbage, stuffing balls and gravy. A range of sauces completed the meal. Cranberry goes so well with turkey! Everything was cooked beautifully and really tasty and hot. Excellent value at £16.95. This is available every day too! The restaurant has a lovely relaxed feel to it, with comfy seating. Staff were welcoming and friendly. There is a good menu too but we came for the carvery as my friend had been before so didn’t really look at it! Definitely coming back😏

Setting was lovely, staff were great - our waitress, Elle, was so friendly and helpful. Food was lovely - large portions meant we couldn't manage dessert but really enjoyed our evening. Would definitely recommend trying it.

Went for the 7 day carvery but the only meat they had was lamb which i do not like ,so had to find something off the menu . Admittedly it was a monday night but I expected a better range of meats. I choose the pork belly and my wife asked for the lasagne to be told that was unavailable too,as well as a list of things that they didn't have. So she chose to have the half chicken. Food took 30 minutes to arrive but was very nice upon receiving, pork belly cooked to perfection with a generous portion of well seasoned mash and some roasted parsnips and a small pot of gravy (could do with more) The half chicken and chips was tasty too. Would of been 5 stars if they had the original food we wanted

Food non existence service worst I've ever had and trying to pay bill was a complete joke. Half the food on the menu was out of stock I mean a beautiful location in the heart of ely at lunch time and run out of food it's not even they had a full house including our party of 8 there was 6 more at other end on restaurant. The service well it took 3 hours to order eat and pay and we only had a main. Come to payment that took a good 50 mins because they said the till was broken er we was paying by card so we didn't need a till and then when I complained they said sorry we'll give you 20 % discount well how about offering us a free coffee for keeping us waiting anyway stay clear it's got crap service crap food stock it was a complete washout

Worst restaurant I've had the experience of. First of all items on line are not available in house secondly no cod and chips even though they said they had it then comes the news no pies no scampi plus some others then that took an hour to come. Service so slow it took us three hours to have a main course only then when it come to pay for it the waitress said her till was broken and was unable to take our money but 20 mins later her brain kicked in and realised we were paying with card and you don't need a till for that. Because of the lack of service they offered us 20% discount but within minutes changed her mind to give us a free coffee. I really thought we were on candid camera.....never will go again do stay clear unless you want a bad experience 😡

We stayed over here last weekend. Was excited as on the website looked lovely. We booked a deluxe room. Sadly small double bed but initially was ok until we opened the bathroom door. We were greeted with a terrible drainage smell. When using the sink the water did not drain for at least 15 minutes. The pipes were gurgling. The toilet did not flush every time. The cistern needed ages to fill. Meanwhile the drainage smell continued throughout the night. It was awful. There were bundles of clean linen for the rooms at the bottom of the stairs leading to the rooms. There was no real reception. The cost at £122 was very high considering it did not include breakfast. We did not have breakfast as the smell in the room was evident in the restaurant. Very disappointed. I would not recommend this for a stay

Had a family get together yesterday 17th Oct. Very unusual for all of us to be disappointed. This is far from a "Gastro" pub!!! Liver and Bacon was mostly watery gravy around an island of 'smash', with small pieces of liver to "fish" for, and topped with 3 tiny peices of fried streaky bacon. The pastry of the meat pie was inedible as uncooked!!!! Several of the desserts were camouflaged with a mountain of spray cream and syrup. And a Raspberry gin, was just plain gin. We will not be returning anytime soon.

Came here on a whim as they had a separate vegan menu which was very exciting for a vegan visiting a pub . However I regret that decision. Came on a Monday and most of the vegan dishes weren’t available . Ordered a cocktail and it tasted like it had no alcohol . The server apologised and said they would took it off the bill which was nice . Food : Had the vegan wellington from the carvery . They did have vegan gravy however all the timings from the carving had no flavour and the same with the gravy . The wellington itself was bland . My mum had the vegan chicken burger which said it would come with sweet potato fries but did not. Was a sad looking burger and ridiculous for £17, could have had a nicer one at Burger King. The lettuce was very limp and there was one little slice of tomato. Then the burger patty. That’s it . We were told once we had placed our order that the buns for the burgers on the vegan menu were not actually vegan so we had to order the one limited option that was available on the vegan menu . Then a different waiter came over to us to apologise and say they in fact did have vegan buns. Much miscommunication and they seemed unsure of the food situation, which is concerning with dietary requirements present . You would think they would have better knowledge considering they have a fully vegan menu . Overall would not recommend this place , came to £50 for two people and all we had was a main and a drink each and one drink was a coffee!! The coffee was tasty at least . But don’t go here , hate to put down a business but did not enjoy the food and the prices are very silly for the blandness. The decor is kind of cute but all a bit random. The blue fairy lights look tacky not cute, try some yellow warm lights it would be a much nicer atmosphere . Overall would sadly not recommend , confused why it has a 4 star average .

I booked a table for my partner and I as we’d been disappointed the night before with our food at Five Miles From Anywhere. The booking wasn’t needed but the place wasn’t empty. The menu contains a good range of dishes and all at reasonable prices (in my opinion). What we ordered was very good. We started with their Caramel Chicken to share and the chicken was lovely and tender with the sauce making a nice change to honey which we’ve tried in other places. He then had a Royal burger while I had a Spaghetti Carbonara which both went down very well before we ordered a Brownie Sundae to share. The atmosphere was only let down slightly by a dog which kept barking at another one nearby (I’m not against dogs by any means but this one was particularly noisy). The waitress who served us was very pleasant and attentive, and we will definitely be going back again!

The food and service wasn't great for the price paid. Waited almost 40 minutes for our mains. Steak was well done despite asking for medium rare. The chicken was too dry. I heard other people complain and hand the chicken back. We would have done the same but were very hungry by that point. Didn't want a further wait. Waitresses seemed rushed and disinterested. Certainly won't be returning again.

This place looks ok from the outside and also when you enter but that was as good as it got. Waited to be seated and we were shown to a completely inappropriate pair of small round tables for six people and two dogs. The waitress didn’t know where to put us despite the place being empty. I made a suggestion that we all sat at a corner table outside. We were then given the Sunday menus despite it being a Monday. Explained it was because it was a bank holiday. This meant that the choice of meals was halved and not shown on their website. Despite the reduced menu we had problems getting the food we ordered. After ordering we were told that they had no fish. Three of us chose the carvery after being told they had beef, turkey and gammon on the carving deck. We waited five minutes at the deck before someone turned up only to be told there was no turkey. The menu also states that you can help yourself to veg, yorkies, stuffing balls and sausages. No sausages, one pathetic flat Yorkie, one small rock hard stuffing ball and tasteless overcooked veg. I thought that the carvery I had from the “Stonehouse” chain was the worst I would ever have but this pathetic effort trumped it. The other three meals weren’t much better. Tough steak in the pie, tiny portion of Hunters Chicken and mediocre “Tennessee Combo”. The guy accepted my criticism and agreed with me. He said that the company and management needed to know. He offered me a reduction if I returned and even free breakfast but I have absolutely no intention of returning. He said that he had no authority to give me any refund and apologised again and shook my hand. When I asked the waitress what lager was on tap she even gave me Guinness as an option. Then the waiter couldn’t tell us which one was the Pepsi’s Max and which one was regular when delivering them to our table. Then we noticed that both the disabled and ladies toilets were flooded with none of the few members of staff aware or either they were not bothered This place is doomed, hopefully.

The drinks were absolutely lovely (we had cocktails) and the waitresses were very lovely and attentive. I ordered my meal and my partner ordered his and we waited for about 10 mins and it arrived. My meal started off absolutely lovely but then I cut into my half chicken and saw blood, I kept cutting and it was completely raw inside. This put me off my meal entirely and we informed a waitress very politely that I would not continue to eat, she was very apologetic (it wasn’t her fault!) and took it back to the kitchen. I was informed this had happened recently which was quite unfortunate. They offered me a free drink and dessert and took the meal off the bill which was great but I am now quite put off by chicken and probably won’t return to the establishment for food again. I do have photographs of the chicken but I chose not to post them as they make me feel sick again. I would like to give another shout out to the waitresses and bar staff they were outstanding honestly.

Carvery was good with a nice selection of meat and good variety of veg but the desserts were poor. Bread and butter pudding hadn’t been cooked and the hot fudge Sunday was a scoop of vanilla ice cream with very dry off cuts of cold brownie topped with whipped cream. Staff were really accommodating for us with a pram but they did forget about part of our order. Overall quite expensive for the quality.

Something of a modern style traditional pub. Not bad at all. Some very decent real ales which makes the place particularly attractive. You can get some decent stuffing food but it is not bistro style. It was quiet because I visited during the afternoon.

Disappointed ! Pretty poor effort. Ordered our food and drinks and went to sit outside on the large riverside garden area. We were given a bleeper, which would go off when our food was ready. It didn’t ! A member of staff came looking for us, which was good, but i explained the bleeper hadn’t gone off, she was completely disinterested and almost made me think she didn’t actually believe me, or we had caused inconvenience when it wasn’t our fault, surely, I’m sorry about that wouldn’t have been too much. I imagine the food was reheated, so my wife had two very overcooked eggs and the roast meat I had was tasteless and tough. The thing that irked us most was the attitude of a senior member of staff. Sadly won’t be returning.
