Met a friend for dinner in this lovely pub. One area is for afternoon tea and the other laid for dinner. We were shown to our table and ordered drinks , which came quickly. We both chose the carvery. The choice of meat was turkey, beef or pork with stuffing and sausages, which were served. We helped ourselves to roast potatoes, roast parsnips, braised red cabbage, huge homemade Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, carrots, broccoli and cabbage, stuffing balls and gravy. A range of sauces completed the meal. Cranberry goes so well with turkey! Everything was cooked beautifully and really tasty and hot. Excellent value at £16.95. This is available every day too! The restaurant has a lovely relaxed feel to it, with comfy seating. Staff were welcoming and friendly. There is a good menu too but we came for the carvery as my friend had been before so didn’t really look at it! Definitely coming back😏

Food non existence service worst I've ever had and trying to pay bill was a complete joke. Half the food on the menu was out of stock I mean a beautiful location in the heart of ely at lunch time and run out of food it's not even they had a full house including our party of 8 there was 6 more at other end on restaurant. The service well it took 3 hours to order eat and pay and we only had a main. Come to payment that took a good 50 mins because they said the till was broken er we was paying by card so we didn't need a till and then when I complained they said sorry we'll give you 20 % discount well how about offering us a free coffee for keeping us waiting anyway stay clear it's got crap service crap food stock it was a complete washout

Worst restaurant I've had the experience of. First of all items on line are not available in house secondly no cod and chips even though they said they had it then comes the news no pies no scampi plus some others then that took an hour to come. Service so slow it took us three hours to have a main course only then when it come to pay for it the waitress said her till was broken and was unable to take our money but 20 mins later her brain kicked in and realised we were paying with card and you don't need a till for that. Because of the lack of service they offered us 20% discount but within minutes changed her mind to give us a free coffee. I really thought we were on candid camera.....never will go again do stay clear unless you want a bad experience 😡

We stayed over here last weekend. Was excited as on the website looked lovely. We booked a deluxe room. Sadly small double bed but initially was ok until we opened the bathroom door. We were greeted with a terrible drainage smell. When using the sink the water did not drain for at least 15 minutes. The pipes were gurgling. The toilet did not flush every time. The cistern needed ages to fill. Meanwhile the drainage smell continued throughout the night. It was awful. There were bundles of clean linen for the rooms at the bottom of the stairs leading to the rooms. There was no real reception. The cost at £122 was very high considering it did not include breakfast. We did not have breakfast as the smell in the room was evident in the restaurant. Very disappointed. I would not recommend this for a stay

Had a family get together yesterday 17th Oct. Very unusual for all of us to be disappointed. This is far from a "Gastro" pub!!! Liver and Bacon was mostly watery gravy around an island of 'smash', with small pieces of liver to "fish" for, and topped with 3 tiny peices of fried streaky bacon. The pastry of the meat pie was inedible as uncooked!!!! Several of the desserts were camouflaged with a mountain of spray cream and syrup. And a Raspberry gin, was just plain gin. We will not be returning anytime soon.

Came here on a whim as they had a separate vegan menu which was very exciting for a vegan visiting a pub . However I regret that decision. Came on a Monday and most of the vegan dishes weren’t available . Ordered a cocktail and it tasted like it had no alcohol . The server apologised and said they would took it off the bill which was nice . Food : Had the vegan wellington from the carvery . They did have vegan gravy however all the timings from the carving had no flavour and the same with the gravy . The wellington itself was bland . My mum had the vegan chicken burger which said it would come with sweet potato fries but did not. Was a sad looking burger and ridiculous for £17, could have had a nicer one at Burger King. The lettuce was very limp and there was one little slice of tomato. Then the burger patty. That’s it . We were told once we had placed our order that the buns for the burgers on the vegan menu were not actually vegan so we had to order the one limited option that was available on the vegan menu . Then a different waiter came over to us to apologise and say they in fact did have vegan buns. Much miscommunication and they seemed unsure of the food situation, which is concerning with dietary requirements present . You would think they would have better knowledge considering they have a fully vegan menu . Overall would not recommend this place , came to £50 for two people and all we had was a main and a drink each and one drink was a coffee!! The coffee was tasty at least . But don’t go here , hate to put down a business but did not enjoy the food and the prices are very silly for the blandness. The decor is kind of cute but all a bit random. The blue fairy lights look tacky not cute, try some yellow warm lights it would be a much nicer atmosphere . Overall would sadly not recommend , confused why it has a 4 star average .

I booked a table for my partner and I as we’d been disappointed the night before with our food at Five Miles From Anywhere. The booking wasn’t needed but the place wasn’t empty. The menu contains a good range of dishes and all at reasonable prices (in my opinion). What we ordered was very good. We started with their Caramel Chicken to share and the chicken was lovely and tender with the sauce making a nice change to honey which we’ve tried in other places. He then had a Royal burger while I had a Spaghetti Carbonara which both went down very well before we ordered a Brownie Sundae to share. The atmosphere was only let down slightly by a dog which kept barking at another one nearby (I’m not against dogs by any means but this one was particularly noisy). The waitress who served us was very pleasant and attentive, and we will definitely be going back again!

The food and service wasn't great for the price paid. Waited almost 40 minutes for our mains. Steak was well done despite asking for medium rare. The chicken was too dry. I heard other people complain and hand the chicken back. We would have done the same but were very hungry by that point. Didn't want a further wait. Waitresses seemed rushed and disinterested. Certainly won't be returning again.

This place looks ok from the outside and also when you enter but that was as good as it got. Waited to be seated and we were shown to a completely inappropriate pair of small round tables for six people and two dogs. The waitress didn’t know where to put us despite the place being empty. I made a suggestion that we all sat at a corner table outside. We were then given the Sunday menus despite it being a Monday. Explained it was because it was a bank holiday. This meant that the choice of meals was halved and not shown on their website. Despite the reduced menu we had problems getting the food we ordered. After ordering we were told that they had no fish. Three of us chose the carvery after being told they had beef, turkey and gammon on the carving deck. We waited five minutes at the deck before someone turned up only to be told there was no turkey. The menu also states that you can help yourself to veg, yorkies, stuffing balls and sausages. No sausages, one pathetic flat Yorkie, one small rock hard stuffing ball and tasteless overcooked veg. I thought that the carvery I had from the “Stonehouse” chain was the worst I would ever have but this pathetic effort trumped it. The other three meals weren’t much better. Tough steak in the pie, tiny portion of Hunters Chicken and mediocre “Tennessee Combo”. The guy accepted my criticism and agreed with me. He said that the company and management needed to know. He offered me a reduction if I returned and even free breakfast but I have absolutely no intention of returning. He said that he had no authority to give me any refund and apologised again and shook my hand. When I asked the waitress what lager was on tap she even gave me Guinness as an option. Then the waiter couldn’t tell us which one was the Pepsi’s Max and which one was regular when delivering them to our table. Then we noticed that both the disabled and ladies toilets were flooded with none of the few members of staff aware or either they were not bothered This place is doomed, hopefully.

The drinks were absolutely lovely (we had cocktails) and the waitresses were very lovely and attentive. I ordered my meal and my partner ordered his and we waited for about 10 mins and it arrived. My meal started off absolutely lovely but then I cut into my half chicken and saw blood, I kept cutting and it was completely raw inside. This put me off my meal entirely and we informed a waitress very politely that I would not continue to eat, she was very apologetic (it wasn’t her fault!) and took it back to the kitchen. I was informed this had happened recently which was quite unfortunate. They offered me a free drink and dessert and took the meal off the bill which was great but I am now quite put off by chicken and probably won’t return to the establishment for food again. I do have photographs of the chicken but I chose not to post them as they make me feel sick again. I would like to give another shout out to the waitresses and bar staff they were outstanding honestly.

Visited here last week for our anniversary. This was an evening booking for 6pm, but for the first hour or so we were the only ones in there which felt a bit lonely. The decor and layout was very nice and modern looking. The lady with long dark hair who took our drinks, who I believe to be the manager or supervisor as she wasn't in uniform, was professional but not particularly friendly or welcoming. Once she had took our food order she didn't say anything and just walked off which was a bit unusual. I ordered the bbq chicken melt and my partner had the 1/2 chicken. The meals were really good quality, very tasty and piping hot. Pretty good portion size too. Really great flavours, and the coleslaw was especially nice. However, when it came to ordering desserts this is where it was a real let down and service became quite bad.... On the menu there is a toffee apple crumble, chocolate brownie, toffee apple crumble sundae and chocolate brownie sundae. A different girl came over to take this order, who we had previously interacted with when she brought over our meals and she was friendly. My partner opted to have the chocolate brownie sundae and I opted for the toffee apple crumble sundae. A few minutes after these were ordered, she came back and said that they don't have either dessert and did we want to pick something else. I clarified with her that I'm guessing that would also mean the chocolate brownie and toffee apple crumble wasn't available either; as these are the main ingredients in each of the sudaes I figured they must be out of brownie and toffee apple crumble all together. She said yes that was correct, so 4 desserts on the menu unavailable. Not ideal but we thought fair enough, and told her we didn't want anything else and asked for the bill. A few minutes passed and then a chef brought over a chocolate brownie sundae to our table. We were really confused by this and said we didn't order that. He seemed very disbelieving of this which was rude! We explained to him that we were told that there was no toffee apple crumble or brownie, which meant these desserts were unavailable, along with the toffee apple crumble sundae and brownie sundae. He then proceeded to say that was incorrect, and that they DO have chocolate brownie, so the chocolate brownie and chocolate brownie sundae WAS available. We firmly said this is not what we were told and eventually he accepted that we were accidently told wrong. He then quite grumpily asked if we wanted to keep the brownie sundae, to which we said no. Then when the bill came, we were shocked to see there was a 10% optional service charge added on! Could not see this stipulated anywhere on the menu or the website (I have also since rechecked the menus on the website and can't see it) but even if we had seen this before hand and knew of it in advance, I would still not have agreed to pay it as I don't believe it is right to try and pressure customers to pay extra. I know it is optional, but businesses do this as a way to make customers feel awkward about asking for it to removed, so most customers feel pressured to pay it even if they don't want to. This doesn't feel fair, even if the service and food is brilliant, I personally think tipping should be personal choice. Therefore, I asked for the service charge to be removed, which was done, but we were asked if this was due to the issue with desserts. It was in part, but not just that, like I said I don't think service charges are a good way to run a business and it can discourage customers from returning. I would like to stipulate that my issue isn't with the girl who got it wrong about the desserts; she just made a mistake and it's easily done, she was actually the only friendly staff member we encountered to be honest! The biggest let down was the way the chef spoke to us and the the service charge. After the issues with the desserts and service charge, we went up the road to Wildwood pizza & pasta bar and had some really nice desserts in there instead where the staff and service was a lot better.

We booked the high flyer for a wake at fairly short notice. Sienna who took the initial call was very compassionate and understanding and extremely helpful. She explained very clearly and concisely what they could offer and showed me the room that they could use to lay out the food and for us to have us private use. The High flyer is very central to Ely so was very convenient and there is free car parking to the rear of the premises This room also had access to a terrace which was incredibly useful for people to go and sit outside as the weather was good and we did have some smokers. The rooms was set out sympathetically to give enough space for people to stand and the tables and chairs will put to the side so people could sit also. The food was really excellent. Plentiful. Well presented and care was taken over its preparation. Everybody commented on how good the spread was. Lots fresh salad, sandwiches, savouries hot chips, veggie options and cakes. There was plenty for everybody and we were even allowed a few takeaway boxes for people to bring stuff home so it didn't go to waste. Again special thanks to Sienna and Elle on the day who were very polite and considerate and continued to maintain levels of tea and milk. Nothing seems to be too much problem for them. They were really excellent and exceeded my expectations. Thank you high flyer and all the team that helped us with a highly emotional day. You delivered a really great result for us, thank you.

Not equipped for summer heat. We came to stay during a very warm period of the year, I’ll admit, but the room was incredibly warm during the day and did not cool off at night. It was maybe 16C outside and felt like 25C in the room. There was a fan but it was loud and didn’t move much air around. Using the shower made the entire room incredibly humid, the bathroom fan was not great. We tried to ventilate the room ourselves by keeping the window open and keeping the door to the corridor open which didn’t work. Neither of us got good sleep during our stay. At check out, we were asked how our stay had been and we shared our feedback: the room got way too hot, there was no way to cool it down, effective measures like blackout blinds and a better fan would be helpful, neither of us got good sleep and it was not a pleasant space to be in. The staff member we were speaking to apologised for the experience, this would have been the perfect time to offer us a partial refund and we were not offered any kind of compensation. It wasn’t great customer service. The room itself was fine (that’s why we’ve given 3*), but they really need to sort out how to keep the rooms cool during summer.

Having ordered simply an orange and lemonade and some fish cakes. I can hand on heart say the only thing that met the standard of bang in the middle of the road average was the orange and lemonade. We were in and seated before the lunchtime rush. The service was inattentive and definitely not warming or welcoming. God help you if you have an allergy, a staff member who didn’t know what to do and then an elusive staff member who took far too long to return with an answer. Paying the gratuity rolled into the bill felt like an absolute piss take given the 4 sentences of interaction had with the staff. Onto the food. For those old enough to remember flash backs of late 90’s school meals is a close description. Just with a 40min wait time and no monkey bars to play on. Let’s break the meal down properly though. Considering Iv had the joys of playing loo tennis after this frankly appalling meal. The fish cakes, were clearly frozen and part cooked before serving and then thrown into a fryer before making its way to the plate. They lacked taste in general and had a large water content not to be confused with fish being moist and properly cooked this was not that. Buttery mash potatoes. Well when you add butter to mash potatoes it takes on a lovely yellow tone and has a certain richness to it. What was on the plate was soft white goop. Blander than the fish cakes which takes which takes some doing. Cutting corners and adding milk and water as opposed to butter some what of a let down given the menu described. The parsley sauce was splitting by the time it was served. Occasionally you got a hit of parsley but more concerning was the random and very over powering hits of lemon that at least added some degree of flavour to the experience. However the absolute star of the show for ineptitude in the kitchen was the vegetable medley. With elements being so over cooked it crumbled off the fork like a well cooked lamb shank….which I doubt would be found at this institute and other elements could only have been more under cooked had I dug them from a farmers field and tucked in there and then. Another impressive feat as the vegetables on the plate looked incredibly similar to the bags of mixed frozen veg available from your local Iceland. Waste of time and money. I hope someone sees this and takes a serious look at what’s going on in that kitchen because honestly I could have made the same meal for less in the same time frame and at least dodged the wildly upset stomach that now plagues me.

However we didn’t want to continue eating it, and asked for our original order. For 22 pounds for what we received was outrageous, we got a couple wings, greasy chorizo, mushroom sauce that were tasteless with only 3 mushrooms, and caramel chicken which was gross. why would anyone want caramel sauce on their salad? The onion rings were sad and not even battered, just like eating raw onions. We also ordered garlic bread, which was £5 just for 3 slices on tesco own 80p garlic bread. The prices are ridiculous. We left feeling ill. They didn’t ask if we had a booking but we weren’t surprised because why would anyone want to come here. Went here 3 years ago for the reopening after COVID and had great food served by engaged staff. It wasn't perfect but they tried. I took the family back today and a fun, good restaurant has turned somewhat sad. It starts with the smell of sewer when you walk in, which is quickly forgotten by the somewhat kitschy decor which consists mostly of fake plastic plants everywhere. The weight staff is dressed in white shirts, black pants and ties, which is a promising sign for food to come. Unfortunately, the food that once was so good has become standard pub food. The chicken was dry (I mean really really dry), as was the lamb liver. The salmon was good but the side salad was literally just leaves, no dressing at all and it looked a day or two old. The burger was fine and looked home made, but nothing to brag about. Finally, the bathrooms reek... Overall, 2 stars. We won't go back.

Can only give a 1 star, looks a nice pub and all but nearly 10 quid for a non alcoholic beer and half a Madri is ludicrous, London prices and some, did query but was told correct. Would not go again.

The pub wasn't very busy, which we'd expected as it was a Thursday - market day in Ely. It's beautifully styled but quite dark in places and had no real atmosphere. The food was fantastic; we had generous portions for both starter and mains with fresh ingredients. It's a shame that they only have Carvery on Sundays, and people came in for that, saw it wasn't available, and left. It's understandable that with the Carvery, there's a lot of wasted food if they're not busy, so they should change the outdoor signage to reflect this. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful and our waitress was especially so. For the price, the meals were amazing value, so I'd recommend going here for a good quality meal. The picture is of the caesar salad, which is the most generous and tastiest I've ever had anywhere.

We came here because we had heard this place had improved. The food was ok and the staff were very good. The one thing I would like to point out is the lack of choice for people with one or more food allergies. Our waitress on the day did her best to get something our friend could eat. I would like to say thanks for that. Hope you can look at this going forward thanks

Hi, I don't usually write negative reviews because don't like the idea of a company suffering but I have emailed the hotel twice now to get a refund to deal with my stay but I have had no response. I stayed two weeks ago and the room I stayed in had been cleaned but to a very poor standard: there was still 'bits' all over the carpet; there were white stains on the display cushions; large clump of hair on the clean folded towels; the toilet had been bleached but not cleaned and there was still poo in the toilet; there was also dust all over the tea and coffee area. The manager was very apologetic and moved me into another room which he had cleaned again whilst I waited. This room was much better but still had dust all over the tea and coffee area and a broken TV display. The rooms need to have some TLC & a serious deep clean before guests stay.

We enjoyed a family meal here, very cosy atmosphere with lovely different seating areas. The service from the staff here was brilliant and met all our needs. Food was excellent and served in a timely manner with lots and lots of choice of menu items whatever you fancy. Even the drinks menu here was extensive with lots of selection. We had a lovely time here thank you!

I stayed for a few nights. It’s in a great location- so close to the Cathedral! The service from manager Jan was excellent- he is very helpful professional and also friendly! he answered all my questions and made my stay great. The young waiter and waitress was great too. The food choice was really good. Try the smashed avocado with lime chilli and poached eggs for breakfast! A nice hotel/bistro with food and bar always available. The rooms … pleasant but no black out blinds, just short curtains which let the light in, but with such a comfortable bed all is forgiven. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone

We rarely eat out over Bank Holidays or Mothers day etc. But my husband thought the menu looked nice for Easter Sunday. I had pre ordered a dish because I use a walking stick and struggle with a carvery. My small bottle of prosecco was plonked on the table without the server bothering to ask if I'd like it opened or poured. Server started to take our plates away while I was still eating. My main dish - as stated on the menu- was meant to come served with saute potatoes and buttered carrots, the server came to our table telling us to go up for our carvery, I said I'd ordered a different meal, only to be told it was waiting at the carvery end and to get my own veg . This was not what was advertised on the Easter Menu! My husbands beef was awful, he couldn't cut it, let alone chew it. My choice was mediocre and barely warm. Appreciate it was a very busy day but not a pleasant experience. It felt like we were on a conveyor belt.

Really disappointed AGAIN, only 2other tables dining in the restaurant so not busy, drinks took a long time to come so my dad had to go to the bar himself where the barman was chatting on the phone, my creamy garlic mushrooms was just fried mushrooms in oil, my husband’s steak was half warm half cold, I ordered steak pie and was served chicken pie, which was replaced and a fee desert was offered, the hunters chicken was awful very small and chewy and no bacon. I live local and used the flyer regularly but under the new management it’s really gone down hill. On the upside the waitress was very nice. Not worth £130. ☹️

Well what can we say...we sat and heard the cooks swear loudly, discussing how long things take in the microwave , speakly dreadfully at the polite waitress, clearly with no respect for her or their customers. When this was addressed by me as I could not sit and listen anymore, the cook responded "don't sit near the kitchen then" really .... rude man. Needs to learn manners. I have complained to the restaurant. Let's wait and see ....

I went here for my birthday celebration surprise. It is a lovely cosy friendly restaurant. We were greeted by a lady called Elizabeth who had clearly taken the time to read through our booking. On arrival she wished me a happy birthday, and show us to our 'cosy'seat, only to find my family there as a surprise. Elizabeth said she loved the look on my face, as i became emotional and handed us a menu. Another colleague took our drink order. The food was amazing, hot, nicely presented and delicious, very enjoyable. A little after our meal Elizabeth raised her voice and with cake in hand, asked everyone to join in with singing happy birthday. This was not expected, more emotions! I had a truly memorable day made even better with my family and Elizabeth's friendliness and attention to detail to make my day so special. Thank you so much Elizabeth, I can assure you we will return.

This pub is run by friendly people. We had a very nice lunch here. My son ordered 3 small plates for his lunch and couldn't believe how big the portions were. We had to help him out and he's an adult! I had a tasty wrap with which I was able to have salad instead of chips but I had some of my husband's chips and they were lovely. Our lunch was very reasonably priced and included a drink. Not fine dining by any means, just a decent, friendly pub with reasonably priced food.

Really disappointing experience. We came for the Sunday lunch and the food was undercooked- the chef seemed to be coming out and telling people that it was the quickest service of his life- seems strange to me to admit that you rushed everyone’s food and then make them pay the same prices. The gravy was watery, the carrots and parsnips were raw and the potatoes were oily. I understand having bad days but it is unacceptable to charge the same prices when you are aware the quality is bad. There are far better places In Cambridgeshire to go for a roast- especially considering this one cost £20 for a single plate of food!!

Has always been overpriced for what is a very average pub. Paid an eye-watering £7 for a pint of lager. I have never seen a pint start with the number 7 in any establishment in the entire country. Bit of a joke really.
