My wife and I went to this lovely pub with our dog for dinner. We booked a table in the bar area which is a real cosy bar. Everyone in the bar and the bar staff were so friendly. We sat there for a couple of hours having a drink plus dinner. The food was great, especially the home made pie. We will definitely return.

It’s a great setting and We enjoyed sitting outside in the sun but overall disappointed with the service and quality of the food. The burger was dry and tasteless, the chicken laksa was poor and we sent this back. The fish and chips made my husband feel Sick that evening. We had high hopes after reading the blurb on the menu but next time will just go for drinks.

Just met up with family who travelled from Ely…for family birthday. We came from Hitchin. Firstly food was excellent, once it arrived. Three roast dinners and two pies of the day. We noticed a table of 4 who arrived after us had been served and finished their meals while we were still waiting. Then another table of 2, who came in some time after us received their food. After about an hour we twice queried the delay and were told the problem was with the order for pies!!. Please…it doesn’t take over an hour to cook or reheat 2 pies! There had obviously been a mess up with our order and it was left to a very nice, young, waitress to try to explain and apologise on behalf of the management. We were then given the wrong bill. When we finally got the correct bill we found you had already charged us service. We paid half the service as we felt the waitress staff had done their best but let down by the kitchen and management.

Went for dinner at the Royal Oak on Sat, 7th Sept. Moving to Barrington on the 12th Sept so wanted to see what our local had to offer. Menu and food ordered superb (Mussel starter, Beef & Ale Pie with veg and Chicken Laksa). Now I am not normally a pudding person but my wife and I shared a Sticky Toffee pudding and it was amazing; I didn’t drink but my wife had a house white, which was good. Service and ambience all excellent and we went back on the 12th Sept; separate review to follow.

Service is ok but the worst of all was mediocre Food. Chewy and cheap cut roast with multiple times reheated potatoes and vegetables. Amateur chef. No wonder why Cambcuisine offers free Carafe for this site. £1 added to the bill without asking for Cambcuine foundation is a rip-off. Why you don’t take your profit toward your foundation instead of taking money from customers.

We ordered 2 roast belly of pork and cauliflower cheese side orders, and drinks,we were told they had run out of cauliflower cheese sides which was very disappointing. Our drinks were brought to our table and l was shocked that our Roasts came just one minute later not giving us any time to sit and enjoy our drinks. The roast potatoes and all the vegetables were undercooked, the pork portions were tiny and had a thick layer of fat. During eating this meal we noticed cauliflower cheese orders were being served at other tables?? When l heard their over the top advertisement on Star radio l thought we were in for a very special meal, how very disappointing it was, l will in future stick to having meals out at The Chequers in Fowlmere where the food is always fantastic. l was further shocked that our bill included an additional complementry tip and a Homeless charity donation was also included, we will not be returning.

The Royal Oak is part of a group of places that have come together as CambsCuisine. We are visiting them in turn. We have not been disappointed yet. The premises have atmosphere, ample parking, cheerful and helpful staff and good food. It was a day when the sun was shining and the sun through the window suddenly became too hot. We couldn't find how to lower the blind. The waitress, instead of the usual, "we'll get someone to look at it," line, set to, spotted the point at which the cord had jammed and lowered it. That's service!

Good and bad Car meet and pop up food outside which we were not informed about at point of booking therefore there was absolutely no parking available for restaurant paying customers and loud cars racing up the road. Not a vast menu but the starters have a good variety, mains could do with a couple of more choices in my opinion. Waitress did not bring over the water we asked for and by the time we caught the eye of anyone we had finished our meal. Service was friendly but they were not particularly attentive and a couple of wait staff were just standing around. With a 10% service charged added to the bill automatically I would of expected exceptional service. Undecided if we would try again

Original review still left below. We came back here several weeks ago for valentines day, had the valentines set menu and every course was great. We chose the Fillet cut to share, the previous flat iron steak being one of the worst I've had this is most probably the best steak I've ever had. That particular cut gets thicker in places but they'd cooked it a perfect medium throughout the whole piece very fair play... Even my Mrs whos not keen on steak was fighting me for the last slices. Generous helpings of chips and onion rings on the side and a trio of different sauces. I'm hoping they offer this on the menu again at some point will come back for this. ORIGINAL REVIEW; Heard great things about this place so gave it a go yesterday. Lovely pub, fire was on and friendly locals. I think I should of stayed in the bar and had the fish finger sandwich in hindsight as the food wasn't great. Hit and miss. Was £80 for the 2 of us, 2 drinks, 2 starters 2 mains. Quite pricey. Baked camenbert was great but paper thin dry bread could of done with a lot more of it bit tight. Mrs had the pie, was great. She ate the whole thing but the flat iron steak underwhelming.... I don't think they seasoned it AT ALL. Then they cut it through the middle which I really insist you don't do. Ordered it medium but it was basically rare and plate was pooled with blood bit unpleasant. I could count the chips, I had 7. The peppercorn sauce was like water and tasted like cream.. Fish and chips and the burgers went past looked amazing I may come back and just keep it simple with a burger.

My husband had been in hospital for six weeks as he has cancer but had four hours home leave and the one thing he craved was a did juicy burger, we arrived unannounced without booking a table first, on a very busy Sunday lunchtime the manageress didn't seem phased at all and managed to find us a table that was available for only two hours which was plenty of time for us. When we realised the pub wasn't doing a normal menu only a Sunday menu I explained the situation and the staff bent over backwards to make sure that we had what my husband wanted, a big giant juicy cheese and bacon burger with coleslaw and fries, he ate every last bit. I can't imagine many very busy pub kitchens on a Sunday lunchtime would have gone to these lengths to accommodate us. We were astounded. Staff were so lovely, no one was flustered, atmoswas great, table perfectly situated, I was very emotional that we were given such super service and such great food during a precious 4 hours away from the confines if a hospital ward. COULDN'T FAULT A THING. A HUGE THANKYOU TO EVERYONE. THANKYOU

Although the Oak probably does best in Summer when the longest village green in England comes into it's own, even in the cold months you can definitely enjoy this 16th Century pub with separate restaurant. Excellently kept ales, with a good range of wines, we sometimes eat in the main bar where intriguing bar snacks can be nibbvld alongside clasic pub grub like burgers and pies. The venison pie is escpecially worth a menttion, it is delicious - but if you're ravenous, the Oak burger with two large and juicy patties, big onion rings and home-made coleslaw - with a generous slice of gherkin - will definitely satisfy. Comfortable seating and a wood fire safely behind a glass door ensures a cosy feel and local families frequent here so you will always have a lively feel in there - and we've struck up a few conversations just by sitting in. Traditional food in the restaurant is the forte of Cambscuisine, the small chain that owns this venue. A glance at their sister outlets will inform the reader of the standard applied to all their pubs, so while I appreciate the way they maintain the pub and the real ale, you can be sure the food is a notch or two higher than a usual pub dining experience. A great place to spend an hour or two on a Saturday for an informal lunch , but also a proper Sunday Lunch venue - or great to to celebrate a birthday. Young people are welcome, but you might find the restaurant is just a little more formal for the very young - so if they're 'lively', you might want to look elsewhere. I recommend a visit, and you'll be back.

Poor quality food, seriously overpiced. More expensive than five guys with meat quality similar to a burger van. Both kids burgers were burn't. Nobdy around to complain to. Mediocre chicken burger and chips £14!

Ridiculous restaurant. You ring their telephone number with an answerphone saying we cannot accept your call!!! How about that for service!!!!! Never again

Chose the Plough as it was a half-way meeting point between ourselves & our friends. Read positive reviews about Sunday lunch before booking & the reviews proved largely accurate. 3 of us had roasts & 1 had a burger. The roasts were great (even on a later sitting), all seemed fresh, meat was perfectly cooked, lovely big crispy yorkshire puddings & lots of gravy! Burger was good, but not outstanding. The wine list was fantastic & selection by the glass was vast (in comparison with most pubs). Team were really friendly (albeit a little forgetful at times that saw us waiting longer than you might expect for drinks & coffees). There was a nice atmosphere & I would definitely recommend & come back again. Thanks to all the team
