The Plough Coton in South Cambridgeshire

Lovely old pub/restaurant in a beautiful setting. Visited this eatery recently with a group of friends, the lunch was very good, waiting staff friendly and courteous. We arrived on time, the venue was busy we were advised our table wasn’t ready yet, we were quite happy to wait the estimated 10 minutes which increased to 35, still no problem for us, no apology from the front of house and their abrupt attitude has prohibited our return.

Amazing meal and service throughout. I had up earlier in the week to make a special request for beef wellington, which to my delight was on the specials board for the evening! Not only was the food delicious, the staff were extremely accomodating and made sure i was looked after throughout the course of my visit. I would recommend the Plough to anyone wanting a pleasurable dining experience and without will be coming again!

This is more a restaurant than it is a pub. However, the staff were extremely helpful and we sat on the pub chairs next to the fireplace. The Plough is a lovely place and the staff are very attentive. The food is expensive but this is not standard pub food. I had the fish and chip and paid more than elsewhere. I do have to say it was impressively fast service. To the extent I thought they had brought it to the wrong table. Also it was just perfect. The food was just superb. Yes I would go again but not call in as a pub. This is more a restaurant and in that sense I would call back. Wonderful

Gabby and the team were incredibly helpful and the service was excellent. We had just held a memorial service for our late son and we used the private dinning area. The food was excellent, well cooked and presented and very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend and will be returning again soon

We booked a table for Sunday lunch and arrived a few minutes early, as we invariably do to any restaurant where we have booked a table but we immediately felt unwelcome and a nuisance. The maitre d, who appeared to be very stressed, had to quickly instruct a waitress to prepare a table for us as one had clearly not been reserved for us. The restaurant was heaving even though it had only been open for about half an hour. We ordered two roast meals and one fish and chips and waited and waited for the food to arrive. Over half an hour later we enquired where it was having seen streams of food coming from the kitchen to another part of the restaurant. We were then told by the maitre d that they were very busy but he did not apologise for our wait at all. Within a few minutes our meals then arrived but the roasts were just about warm so had obviously been standing around for a long time. The meals themselves would have been excellent had they been hot as they should have been. It was overall not a very pleasant experience, particularly due to the passive aggression we received from the man in charge. So will not be recommending this establishment nor returning.

RUBBISH! was seated at a small table behind a pillar in the middle of the restaurant, I waited 15 mins to be served and asked if I would like a drink, but then had my food order taken at the same time, I had the roast beef which wasn't very hot, and the beef was more gristle and fat than meat and the Yorkshire pudding was looking a deflated and depressed, my wife had the fish and chip that was under cooked, white fish is a white meat and not a pink/brown meat, for us to arrive at the restaurant be seated, have a drink, eat and leave in less than an hour tells me that the food was rushed and a big chance of it being undercooked. I have waited longer in fish and chip shop for my fish than I did in this restaurant

The Plough on a weekday lunchtime, prices have crept up a bit, perhaps too few items that are gluten free, but a buzzy restaurant with attentive service. The dish I had, and cheaper, turned out to be unusual and full of flavour – a large piece of cooked tuna with an interesting salad. A pleasant experience.

Had booked, but was running late on a Sunday evening and they still accommodated me for dinner, much appreciated as I had been driving for about 4.5 hours that day. Staff were lovely, just the right balance of attentive without being pushy, friendly without being intrusive. Pleasant, happy and kind. Food was lovely, especially the roast porchetta, and a huge serving at a reasonable price. Only slight downside for me, was one table with children, letting them watch videos on the phone with the volume up... And a "dad" at another table chuntering on about a set menu, when there was clearly no set menu. Don't get me wrong, if something isn't right, I'll complain, but this fella forgot to put on his big boy pants and needed to calm down. TBF None of which was the pubs fault! So all in all, a definite recommendation from me! And did I mention that the staff were fab!

During a Sunday night dinner outing, I encountered several issues at the restaurant. Two of the main dishes listed on the already limited set menu were unavailable, leaving us with limited options. Despite politely inquiring about alternative choices, the manager was unapologetic and displayed rudeness. Additionally, I had to request water multiple times before it was finally brought to our table. To add to the unpleasant experience, I was publicly shouted at by a staff member while settling the bill, with all the restaurant staff watching. I will not be returning to this establishment.

Lovely pub, and equally lovely food. It was Mother’s Day and the place was very busy, but we were served promptly and staff were attentive and welcoming. There was a wide choice on the menu in addition to the more traditional Sunday roasts.

I visited this beautiful pub yesterday and was absolutely blown away by the incredible experience. The staff were all wonderful and so helpful, going above and beyond to ensure we had a fantastic visit. Despite running late, the staff were incredibly accommodating and made us feel welcome. The food and drinks were exceptional, and the atmosphere was simply amazing. I highly recommend this pub to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. I will definitely be returning in the future.

Possibly the worst rendition of a pizza I’ve had for the £13 they charged. Heard many good things about this place but was a massive let down

Very nice country pub close to Cambridge that was reasonably central and easy to get to for a gathering of former work colleagues/friends. Good choice on the menu with added specials. Service was friendly and professional/efficient. All in our party were pleased with the choice and will certainly call again.

Everyone was very attentive, the food and drink was delicious 😋 👌

Went for a Sunday roast with a friend. Overall it was great and good value. It gets super busy on a Sunday so I would recommend booking in advance. The carrot cake was 10/10

We booked a table in the private room for our daughters 21st for a special family Sunday lunch and all we can say is a big thank you to Pasky and all the team at The Plough. The food and service were 10/10, the room was lovely, service was spot on as always and very attentive. The Sunday lunch itself as ever was delicious and we all really enjoyed it. We will be back again very soon.

Was very rushed. 5mins after finishing our main meal the bill was on the table and had a rude waitress asking if we wanted to pay by card. Very disappointing.

Excellent food in a lovely environment. Very helpful in accommodating my dairy intolerance too.

10.01.2024 Came for lunch. 3 adults, 3 children. Was slightly late due to traffic. Before ordering maitre d told us he'd already booked our table out after us. Basically saying for us to eat quickly and leave. Food took a while to come due to it being busy. Roast chicken was nice but too big for the plate and needed a sharpr knife to cut it with Roast lamb was nice but fiddly. Children's portions were generous. Restaurant was noisy, service was slow. Maitre d put a damper on the meal from the start. Would not recommend or return.

The nicest roast in Cambridge by far!! Staff were lovely, the most tender roast beef ever and properly poured pints of Guinness! Couldn't ask for better, will absolutely be back!

The new menu at the Plough is excellent. Several attractive items to choose from: it is our second visit this week, and we will come again soon. :::::::::: Another visit, and I fear - another disappointment. The atmosphere in the pub is brilliant, it's a really pleasant place to be. But the menu had very few things attractive; we tried "Asian salad with soft crab", and the very basic salad was old, far from fresh (as if it was cut yesterday). What's going on in their kitchen? ------- I am forced to write an update: we visited yesterday and found they changed the menu (as is appropriate from time to time). The new menu was quite disappointing though: the excellent dishes are gone, the pork belly has little flavour, the plaice as well (plus the rubbery gnocchi wasn't a good add), several other dishes were quite/below ordinary. Hope the next change of menu comes soon. ........... This is not my first review of The Plough in Coton, but I felt compelled to write again. The atmosphere is as good as ever, the staff are happy and not stressed, enjoying themselves (mostly). It's important to have this good energy, it passed over to the floor. But my main point was the food. They changed the menu last Thursday, and there are at least four main dishes we would have to come back for to taste... Today we had octopus, and whoever is in their kitchen - they have my respect: it is not easy to cook octopus that tender, and the whole dish works very well together. Again, you can only cook that well if you have good energy, and I wish it continues at The Plough

Came for Christmas Eve with my family and had a really nice time with lovely food and service

Lovely Boxing Day Lunch, no problem in moving tables as my father is hard of hearing with a lot of background noise. Attentive staff and would love to visit again.

We stopped here on the way through to the Euro Tunnel in our Motorhome. We were made to feel so welcome and the staff were very professional and friendly. The food was exceptional. Overall, a fantastic pub, which is dog friendly. Thank you

We turned up in Boxing Day and fully expected we would be turned away as the pub was clearly busy. Instead we were settled with cushions and blankets on a table outside and served an excellent lunch. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming.

Had Xmas dinner with family on 17th of Dec. Food was very mediocre. Vegetables were burnt and turkey was very dry. They all seemed in a rush not really paying attention wouldn’t eat there again for Xmas. It may be different other times but no indication of that.

Lush soup and cheese board, turkey dinner was ok but had no stuffing??? we was a table of 15 all food correct via pre order, would go back nice side room called grain store , clean toilets, car park needs improved lighting and gravel at the back

One of my favourite places to eat, incredible food, wonderful atmosphere and in a secluded and beautiful location.

This is a gem of a find. I promise you, you will eat the best roast beef of your life here! The staff are amazing of course but the roast beef is so good, I order a takeaway of it to have the next day.

We have been to the Plough many times and while not perfect always pleasant and efficient service and good food and wine. This trip was absolutely terrible from virtually no service from a waitress who did not give a damn to overcooked(and expensive) monkfish we had to call for service and then when it came it was slow. Probably won’t bother as when you can overcook monkfish to the extent that it is like fish fingers then not sure I want to waste my Money

Lovely country pub with very good food. They even managed to uphold standards for a mass catering event! If the weather is nice, eat outside.

I went there for the first time on a Sunday evening with friends. We were warmly welcomed by all the staff. It’s not easy finding some where that serves late on a Sunday around Newmarket. It was worth the drive to find The Plough. The Sunday roast was great, in fact two of our party couldn’t finish their meals as there was plenty of food on our plates. I will definitely be returning and also recommending this venue to friends. Five star service.

Nice big portions. Quick service... Service charge added in the bill with no mention of it though. Just listed in the totals. A bit naughty that.

Went for a school reunion lunch. Large booking which a lot of restaurants struggle with. Here the service and food was excellent. Highly recommended and will be back soon

Can’t help but be disappointed when you pay £29 for a monkfish dish advertised as coming with a prawn and garlic mousse when it comes without one. To compound matters I ordered a chocolate and ginger tiramisu only to find that chocolate also doesn’t exist…..

The Pub was nice and the staff were very friendly, but unfortunately the food was not great. We had the Sunday roast, the beef was ok (a bit fatty) but the veg was cold and the roast potatoes were very cold and Inedible. For the price I expected it to be a lot better than it was.

Lots of old people. Not a lot of diversity in the customers. Felt weird. But absolutely great food and service. Not great selection of beer. More of a fancy-wanna-be restaurant than a pub. Good place overall but it wouldn’t be my first choice to have a drink with a friend.

Fantastic gastropub with really friendly service. Really enjoyed our visit here and will definitely be back next time I’m in the area. Always nervous ordering rack of lamb as the bone to meat ratio often not great. However my lamb was cooked to perfection 😋

Moderated expectations as booked only a few hours before lunch on a Sunday. Blown away by the host, exceptional skills and clearly well versed at managing a busy restaurant. Visible owners working as hard as staff. Wait staff are delightful, knowledgeable and efficient. The food….well,...

Obviously a very popular place but like other comments the Sunday roast wasn’t warm enough. £13.90 for a large glass of wine is most we’ve ever spent. Unfortunately before we’d even eaten the waitress managed to knock my husbands pint flying, all over me. They wiped the table down, redressed the table but only gave him a half a pint back. The roasts was disappointing, for the price. We don’t mind what the food costs as long as it’s worth it but 3 roast potatoes, a Yorkshire, with I have to say yummy parsley in, 1 slice of beef, a few carrots and the mundane red cabbage wasn’t worth the price. Couldn’t fault the dessert but not happy with the service charge that was added. Considering I got very wet they could have at least waived the SC.

Food was quite mediocre and overpriced for the quality and the amount. The ambiance is nice, but nothing special. Not sure how this can be defined a famous “gastropub” as I read online. I mean, not bad at all, but really nothing special either.

Just getting better and better. Top notch lunch. Great service. Bit spendy but great value options at lunchtime ( pizza and sandwiches). They always have lovely staff and happy to see some that have been there for a while.

It was lovely but rather expensive. So I can't comment on the food. The menu looked lovely.

3.30pm table for a Sunday lunch, table ready on time, despite being obviously busy. We had some olives and went straight for roasts as we were hungry, and our mains arrived in less than 10 minutes. Unfortunately, it was downhill from there. The vegetables were just about warm enough not to send back the whole plate, which also wasn't very warm. The porchetta was nice, but not a lot of it, similarly the gravy. When checked by FoH, we said the vegetables weren't hot but didn't want to send the meals back, so maybe could we just have some hot veg sent out. Extra veg and gravy was delivered quickly, but again, not hot. Parsnips were not topped or cored, and therefore hard and woody. The carrot also not topped, but otherwise nicely cooked. Cabbage underseasoned on the plate. The roast potatoes were poor, not even coloured on the outside, let alone crispy. Definitely not roasted for more than a cursory few minutes. We also ordered sides of hispi cabbage with smoked bacon and cauliflower cheese. The cabbage was clearly not hispi, likely savoy, and the bacon not really cooked. Cauliflower cheese was nicely cooked, not very cheesy, more a flour-based white sauce, and for £5 a very small dish. Nevertheless, this did reach the table hot, so was enjoyable. All in all, we got fed and watered, but won't be going back. The welcome and service was basic, and for olives, 4 drinks, 2 mains, and 2 sides £75 would have been fine if the food had been good. Unfortunately it was was not. Nobody senior attempted to discuss our complaints or dissatisfaction at any stage so we paid, having declined to pay the automatically added service charge, and slipped away as quietly as possible.

Excellent food. I had roast duck, plenty of food, very nice dessert and starter. Couldn't fault it. Efficient and friendly service. People were also prepared to sit outside. So must be popular especially now weather has got a bit cooler. Plenty of parking as well.

Mediocre roast chicken dinner with 40 minutes wait after ordering. Although I had reserved, the table wasn't ready so i also had to wait. There was very little veg with the roast and 2 tiny potato pieces. Therefore, not great value for money. Friendly staff.

3rd time I have eaten here and none have been favourable, 1)fish& chips badly over cooked 2) Burger very cold 3)white bait & Horisha strips - just don’t order them, when issue raised staff disappeared

I had my special retirement Sunday lunch here with my family. The food was amazing as were the staff for such a busy restaurant!! I'd also like to congratulate Pasky on his success, having known him from some years ago when I worked in a city centre barber shop. Well done Pasky!!! Love from Donna

We are regulars at the Plough so would not normally think to write a review. However dinner at the Plough last night was superb and deserves a mention. We had the fillet steak which was so tasty and tender and cooked just how we like it. The courgette side was truly delicious. Excellent wines by the glass and a warm and hospitable welcome from Pasky and Max. Well done team. X

Reliable but pricey. The staff sometimes could do a better job of making you feel welcome (in a genuine way).

Saturday afternoon visit with friends, we all enjoyed our food and the biscoff cheesecake was amazing!! There is a lovely play area outside for children too and the staff were nice and friendly! Would definitely recommend.

Great location. Felt spacious inside, and loads of seating outside. Great food, and good service. Kid-friendly, with the playground, the general vibe, and that they could accomodate a lot of dishes for kids (with big kids portions!). Would come back for an occasion - thanks!

Great food in a nice cosy village gastropub. Chilled pea soup and monkfish followed by Cambridge burnt cream (cremè brûlée) and a glass of Sancerre. Delicious

Visited this pub today for a birthday lunch. Fantastic food, great attentive service and a lovely local pub atmosphere. This is a Gastro Pub and of high quality and the prices reflect that, but they compare well to other similar establishments. As a wheelchair user, the pub is accessible, with good clean wheelchair accessible toilet facilities. The staff were willing to help me get around when I needed a little bit of extra help. Well worth a visit and I will be going back again soon.

We had an evening meal without a prior booking and were really fortunate to get a table. Our waitress was attentive but not 100% familiar with the menu and specials. Our wine was excellent and not too expensive. The food was very good, far exceeding standard pub fare and our expectations. The noise levels were high which made general conversation at the table a strain. I guess this shows its a buzzing place. I'd be very happy to visit again.

We booked to go to the plough for a birthday meal decided to sit outside because of the lovely weather order different meals. The super salad was very bland and watery, the chicken was very dry and broccoli very hard and for the price I expected a little more attention. I spoke to the man collecting the glasses and said could I give you some feed back regarding the meal he looked at me I spoke to him and he just shrugged his shoulders no one came out to check the food was adequate at any time and the waitress were standing by the outside door a lot of the time so for the money I would expect better attention and better food

We went here because of its many awards and were shocked at the quality of the food. We ordered four pizzas, two of them came out missing key ingredients (one missing sliced mozzarella and rocket and another missing Parma ham). Desserts were also poor, including a gritty and unpleasant tasting plant based panna cotta and a cheeseboard again missing half its advertised ingredients (grapes, quince, and chutney). None of the missing ingredients were reflected in the bill. Definitely do not recommend!

Dropped in for lunch on our way home. We’ll worth the short detour. Welcoming, good menu choices, reasonably priced and tasty food. Would recommend.

Went for Sunday lunch. Had a fantastic meal, the food was delicious. Everyone was friendly and helpful, quick without making us feel rushed. We then cycled into Cambridge, a short, off road ride away, before returning for a couple of evening drinks.

Tasteless burgers - no garnish - look was unappetising - very rude barmaid - rickety uncomfortable outside chairs. Broken play equipment. We were expecting so much more from this venue. Some of the waitresses were helpful and doing their best.

We had lunch with the family here recently and found the service to be exceptional from arrival. The food tasted fantastic and there was a range of decent seating areas. Very impressed, will definintely be returning to the Plough soon.

Scallops for a starter 1 that I would say was a normal size and 2 1/2 sized "pieces" at £16 expecting a wow!! NO!!! Then I had lemon sole with cockles, there where 9 cockles on my plate 4 of which had not opened!! Surely...

I must admit I was a little disappointed. Food was nice, but there was no 'wow' and for the prices, I had high expectations. Sticky Toffee pudding was served barely warm (not hot) and as no-one came to check on it, we weren't able to ask to have it re-heated. However, we mentioned this to a waitress when the dishes were taken, and she was very apologetic. She admitted that as they had not checked on the desserts, we were not given the opportunity to ask for them to be heated, so they kindly deducted the cost of these from our bill. Service was just a bit lacking - my friend asked for no tomato with her burger, and a huge slice of tomato came. She had to ask twice for mayo with her burger and more than half of her meal had been eaten before the mayo arrived. Drinks took ages to arrive too. So, pleasant, but a little disappointing. The staff were lovely, however.

Excellent wine list! The food is just acceptable, some of it is not good some just OK. Stay away from the harissa straws they are tasteless. The fried whitebait is good. The pakoras lack salt but are otherwise pleasant. Burgers ok, undercooked chips vile, pale onion rings just ok, fish and chips bog standard and quite bland, smoked aubergine would be ok if it weren’t for a huge amount of onion that’s been lathered on it. Who in all the world would want to spoil a delicious aubergine this way?

Came for lunch yesterday and the food was fantastic! Well worth the price, would happily pay more! Harriet was a real gem, made our dining experience so much better with fantastic service, would return just for her!

A lovely pub in the countryside with close access to Cambridge. Great menu and plenty of outdoor seating plus they have a big kids play area.

Food really disappointing to the point my wife didn’t eat it, we did not complain as we had older relatives with us. Overcooked & overpriced! Wine good with good service! Great setting so shame. Not sure about service charge either but seems to be the norm these days.

Had to send my beef back was so tough could not chew it but to be fair end of joint but new beef was wonderful. So tasty would go back again. Lovely fine.

Got there at 10pm for a late beer there website and Google says it's open until 11pm, the barman said "we are shut, staff only".
