Had a Sunday roast in the bar area as we have dogs. The staff seemed to be a bit young and inexperienced. We waited nearly an hour for our food, even though we told the bar staff what we wanted to order as soon as we arrived. Everyone else got Thier food before we did. It was rather cold in there too. Food was good but nothing exceptional. Would it be so hard to make a vegan Yorkshire pudding?

We stayed here one night and also had dinner and breakfast here. The staff, two young people, were very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. We spent the whole evening here with delicious tap beers, we were even allowed to tap one ourselves. It was fine for the price, the breakfast was excellent and the room was tidy. One point for improvement is that we could have used a little more information about nice walking routes and sights, because the location is quite remote. Until next time, Royal Oak!

I had a Sunday lunch back in the winter which was superb and the location was good as we were upstairs which is a lovely traditional room. On returning this week for lunch we were very disappointed as there was no atmosphere, only a few tables down stairs, the menu was expensive and very limited especially for vegetarians so we actually left and did not stay for food or even a drink

Nice pub and friendly staff. Though I selected the restaurant option, online, where to eat, we were given a small table by the bar. Fish {bit over battered) and chips were good. On paying the bill, we didn't realise till later that a £6 !! service charge was added, which I was not ask about. So I was a bit disappointed all round.

We only had drinks & lunch in the bar so can’t comment on the accommodation or restaurant Food and drinks were ok and the people behind the bar were very friendly. There was one problem - 12.5% added to the bill as a service charge. (I didn’t pay it). I’m happy to pay a service charge in a restaurant but this is a pub bar for goodness sake. I did all the work - ie walked to the bar to order the drinks and I carried them back to the table. It wasn’t table service. It’s a crazy situation with pubs like this. If you pay for drinks / food as you go there is no service charge, as you’d expect. Put it on a tab and they try to charge you an extra 12.5%

Sunday lunch booked for 2:30, which might explain why the vegetables & chicken were overdone to burnt, roast potatoes were dry & almost inedible. One of the beefs was OK but the other one was tough & had a lot of fat & grizzle. I think the pork was OK.

A friend really rates this pub so we stopped in for a weekend lunch. The service was cheerful but I'd rather go to the takeaway van than eat here again. My husband's bangers and mash was served with BISTO gravy. Bisto. In a restaurant. At £15, I was expecting a burger that was well above average but instead received the blandest, driest burger I've ever had the misfortune of attempting to eat. The burger bun itself tasted days old and didn't help the situation, but no gold plated bun could have helped meat as tasteless and dry as that. We didn't bother ordering a dessert as it seemed pointless after two sub par meals.

Slightly weird obsession with vegan food at this pub and couldn't help but think that got in the way of feeding the 99% of the population that isn't vegan. Food was good, don't get me wrong, but it felt like they were trying to corner a market that doesn't really exist in one of the most meat driven corners of South West England. So vegan ends up on your plate one way or another because dairy is forbidden no matter what.

Very disappointed after reading so many positive reviews that the bar man was so unprofessional and the opening hours either in need of updating or not honoured by the staff.

My wife and I have eaten here on several occasions in the past and have never been disappointed , until now. We had Sunday lunch here a few weeks ago ( have been away, hence the lateness of the review ) First thing we noticed was the lack of customers and the atmosphere felt cold and uninviting. We both ordered a roast. My wife had pork,I had lamb. My wife’s meal was ok, mine was inedible. The lamb was cold and very tough, couldn’t cut it ! The veg was cold and the roast potatoes were hard and cold as well. In fairness, I did get an apology and they swapped my lamb for Turkey, which wasnt bad, but not that good either. We had one sweet between us. An overly sweet tart, with what tasted like artificial cream !

A Tuesday lunchtime, four of us for lunch. The place was completely empty when we arrived. Man behind the bar was very welcoming and charming. A limited menu of what was pub food ( but it is a pub after all). My oak smoked burger was dry and the chips awful - over cooked and greasy). My wife’s ham (served with egg and chips) was lovely. Four of us visited yesterday, en route to Westonbirt Arboretum, and enjoyed a fabulous lunch. The surroundings are a little bare and basic, but that is part of its charm. Two of us had fish and chips; one had chicken burger with cheese and bacon and the fourth person had sausage and mash. We couldn't fault the cooking, the food, speed of service and helpfulness of the lady behind the bar, who seemed to double up as waiter as well. We had pre booked for a reasonably large group to meet at lunchtime after a wedding locally. We were disappointed as on arrival at midday we could not even get a coffee as there were no clean cups because there was no one to wash up. We ordered some food which was fine as they could not cope with all of us ordering and then ordered coffee again which never arrived. Had a lovely roast lunch with a big group including a number of youngish children. The food was excellent for both the meat eaters and vegetarians as always, while the service stood out even more than usual. We were in a slightly separate room which eased the concern about disturbing other diners and the waiting staff couldn't be faulted making excellent provisions for the fact we had hungry children. Without prompting they took our orders very quickly and prioritised the children's orders so that they came our before the adults. Having been a couple of times before without problems I thought this would be a good choice for 6 of us after a walk round Westonbirt Arboretum. We had meat pots, fish and chips, mackerel. Beers, G&T;'s. I like the fact that having asked for water we got glasses with ice and lemon and then 2 bottles of water. Everything efficient and welcoming. Happy to go again, especially as there is outside space as the summer warns up, and plenty of car parking. Only reason this doesn't have higher rating is that it's not on the main drag so people don't know it's there but it's 2 mins walk from market.

Just a short walk from the town centre, this CAMRA awarded bar offers a great selection of ales and ciders and the lunch menu has enough choice to please everyone. The food was standard great gastropub/pub food. I chose the burrata and plum as starter and a Caesar salad as my main course. It was rather disappointing to see my burrata with plum seemed to have to been swapped with a stringy mozzarella instead and I had none of the creaminess inside I was looking forward to in a burrata. Waitress was none the wiser and called it a burrata, and as I was with friends I did not pursue the matter.
