The Royal Oak Restaurant in Cheshire West and Chester

Booked a place to stay down the road, stating pub within a mile, yeah but it's CLOSED DOWN

We spent a few days here, it was a very relaxing, great service and friendly staff. It is a nice area for walking and chilling.

Give it a miss, service very poor. Long wait for food and drinks. Bar man friendly, young girls no customer service skills. Witnessed unused cutlery from table being put back in cutlery drawer (after she had picked them up off the floor when she dropped them!!) Manager should get a grip on staff training over this. We won't be back.

The restaurant was empty when we arrived. We ordered drinks. They eventually said they only had one bottle of 0% lager. We were a party of three and we ordered lunch from the menu. We waited ages. The staff stood around chatting. They was much noise from the kitchen. Lots of laughing, chatting and parking about. Very loud and unprofessional. After about 40 minutes our food arrived, after I asked them how long it would be. The fish and chips was good, but the shepherdess pie was not nice at all. All in all it was very disappointing and we won’t be going again.

I visited here with my extended family for a meal. It was very quiet with only a few other tables occupied. We decided on dining here due to the offer they had on which was 30% off on a Thursday. We’ve been before to take advantage of this offer as it’s such great value for money. The evening started off great. We were welcomed by the manager and shown to our table. Our order was taken promptly, again by the manager, and then our drinks arrived followed by our food. Unfortunately, it went downhill from here. I guessed the manager had gone home by this point. The two young girls serving us were so miserable, no smiles, nothing. They spent most of their time hovering at the bar, chatting. We asked one of them for more drinks and nothing happened. Eventually, after a good 10 minute wait, a gentleman arrived at our table to take our order. (He looked like the supervisor or assistant manager?) We then waited a further 20 minutes with still no sign of them. By this point I was getting annoyed so I went to the bar to ask myself. The bar man said he’d bring them asap. His exact words were “My bad, I’ll bring them straight over”! My bad?! What an unprofessional comment to make! Had the bar had been busy then fair enough but, there was hardly anyone in there! The staff seemed more interested in chatting at the bar instead of looking after us. My daughter then asked one of the young girls for a spoon as she didn’t have one. This never arrived so, again I had to go and get one myself from the bar. We also had to ask for napkins, twice! Those two girls were useless. No customer service skills at all. When we asked for the bill, we noticed that the discount hadn’t been taken off. The gentleman came over and said that the offer wasn’t on?! We explained that it was even on their website! He never even asked to see the proof that it was on the website, just said sorry, no discount. We said that we weren’t happy and wanted to speak to the manager. He then disappeared for a good 10-15 minutes. We assumed he was maybe calling the manager but, no. He came back to our table and said that the offer has definitely finished so we can’t have it! He said, if you like, he could call the manager. Why had he not done this in the first instance? No idea what he had been doing for the 10 minutes we were waiting?! In the end, he spoke to the manager and the discount was taken off. It was such an effort and it ruined the whole evening. We will not be returning. Other choices available in the village with much better staff!

The best pizza 🍕 in Cheshire!!! Excellent well mannered staff best to book on weekends would highly recommend a visit here

Had a lovely stay on as travel zoo deal ,absolute bargain , dinner lovely.basic menu on deal , but adequate , breakfast very good , all staff were friendly and helpful, manager/,,owner was very good and very hard working , would definitely stay here again .

Our first visit at The Royal Oak and this place is definitely the best around for miles. The Sunday Roast was amazing especially the gravy. My son loved the chicken fajitas and cleared his plate. Compliments to the chef team and great service too.

Excellent choice of food. One of the best menus from any pub that I have seen for a long while. Food was very tasty, hot and plentiful. Everyone had something different and we all agreed. Service, attentive and friendly. Highly recommended and looking forward to going back soon.

I was spoilt rotten by the Staff. I expect this service from a 5 star Hotel . Nothing was too much bother . I will 100% be back again.

The first thing I ordered they couldnt serve because they didn't have the ingredients. They must have known that when they gave us the menus so I'd expect to be told at that point, but it was about 10 minutes after ordering so I then had to choose something else which arrived a long time after my daughter's meal. The food, when it arrived, was quite good. Steak pie was in nice shortcrust pastry and the kid's fish and chips was tasty. If you're expecting a good pint then look elsewhere. No decent bitters or ales on tap, just John Smith's. And Weetwood best bitter in a bottle. Pretty woeful for a village pub with a good brewery half a mile up the road.

Visited June 21 not 22. Just coming out of covid measures. Had written review and not posted it 🙄 Seated in marquis for Sunday lunch. Service was slow. Not overly busy but a few big tables in. Was not allowed to have the previously advertised three course Sunday lunch special, despite all the options bring available on the menu. Clawing back some lost revenue possibly. However, this soured it a bit for me. It was then a little overpriced. Fairly pleasant in marquis. Slightly chilly. Food was good but not exceptional. Points lost for slow service and cost. However, given the situation at the time, would try it again as no real complaints about food.

We’ve been here for a meal tonight.. The service was brilliant, the staff couldn’t do enough for us. The food was above our expectations and we will definitely return.

Burnt pizza unfortunately went straight in the bin and spoilt our evening meal. I e-mailed the Oak twice but received no response. Clearly poorly run with no quality control or idea of customer service.

We just returned from a Sunday evening dinner at the Royal Oak. I had the halloumi fajitas and my aunt had a Brie appetizer and a pork with crackle main. First of all the restaurant is a lovely space, tables are a nice size and there is lots of space between tables. The menu is extensive and there is a nice selection of wines. The staff are very pleasant, helpful and attentive. We had a true lovely evening - one I will remember until my next visit to the Chester area - and we will make a return visit. Thank You!,

Nice large room with modern bath. Slept well. Restaurant has a great menu with option to have a pizza in the sports bar. Had lunch, nice but expecting hand cut chips and were served frozen chips. Food was served well presented and lots of it. Staff were great. Have a lovely stay.

I have been to the restaurant on numerous occasions as my parents live close by. The decor and environment is lovely and well decorated. I have never had a bad meal it has always been really nice. We stayed in one of the rooms for Christmas 2018 for two nights. Our bedroom and bathroom were absolutely gorgeous. Lovely furniture and comfortable bed. The bathroom was huge with a lovely rain shower. I couldn’t fault it. So much so we are staying over at Christmas again this year. Oh yes and it was all spotless so clean. Can’t wait to stay again at Christmas 2019!!

The menu is quite comprehensive and is complimented by the fact that they have their own pizza oven. Was looking forward to the Cesar salad but decided on the meat feast pizza which was brilliant. Although prices may be a little on the high side, it was worth every penny.

I read some mixed reviews about this restaurant but the attraction of a wood fired oven making fresh pizza was enough to stir my curiosity.

We took our 93 year old mother here for a meal. Five of us, I have to say. The service was very good and we all enjoyed our meals, even the picky one amongst us. This was our second visit to the Royal Oak and I don’t think it will be the last.

This establishment presents itself as a boutique hotel with a dining room and bar. We called in for a drink and dinner. We did not see or use the accommodation.

No muy ocupado, personal agradable pero generalmente desinteresado, titulares - opiniones variadas pero principalmente positivas, platos principales universalmente decepcionantes, desiertos - no se pudo comentar porque la oferta llegó unos 15 minutos demasiado tarde. Nos reunimos con amigos que no habíamos visto por un tiempo, poniéndonos al día, claro que habíamos estado poniéndonos al día con el gusto del personal cuando empezaron a estampar sillas móviles en movimiento y uno vino y dijo que podíamos pagar ahora o en el bar. Y, finalmente, para mi plato (si el gerente comenta sobre esto, dirán que no es cierto) el pescado no estaba fresco, se había descongelado. . .

Ollie the manager was amazing, super attentive and very interactive. The staff where also very welcoming, Chris on the bar is a great guy very interesting and both waiter and waitress where very good. Food was amazing keep up the good work guys

We ordered the Full English Breakfast. Very disappointing, very average under cooked tomato, one saugage one bacon not very good for a 120.00 stay was expecting good quality food !!!

Cuatro de nosotros (dos parejas) fuimos a cenar. Teníamos 2 por 1 en los cupones del plato principal, así que decidimos probar aquí ya que había sido hace un par de años y fue bueno. El menú es muy variado y los entrantes fueron muy buenos. Lamentablemente los platos principales no eran tan buenos. Las costillas estaban secas y no muy carnosas, tres las tenían y yo tenía carne crujiente y fideos. Mi amigo tenía la carne crujiente y los fideos como entrante y fue bueno y una porción muy generosa. Tengo que evitar la harina de trigo, así que tenía la opción crujiente de gluten de carne de res y los fideos de arroz estaban demasiado cocidos y un poco escaso, la salsa y la carne de res eran buenas, así que si no hubiera tenido GF, creo que hubiera sido bueno. El menú era muy variado y las pizzas sonaban bien, así que si volvía, posiblemente las probaría, ya que también hacen las bases de GF.

This was our first visit to The Royal Oak and we all enjoyed our meals. Staff were friendly and we were not kept waiting at all. We would certainly recommend the restaurant and we will be going back again.

This was our second visit to the Royal Oak during February and the previous high standards have been maintained.

The Royal Oak is a lovely place to eat. the staff are great and very helpful. The food was delicious. We will definitely be eating there again. Our waitress Ellie was very helpful and cheerful-thank you!

We went there yesterday for Valentine and had the evening meal and overnight stay. The room was big with a large bed and lovely bathroom. Couldn't fault the evening meal I had the hake and my husband had the chicken. There was cereal, fruit and yoghurt at breakfast, but we just have one course. I had poached eggs and my husband had a full English, which was quite large, I ended up eating his black pudding. The only downside is that the drinks are a bit pricey, but will definitely return.

This place needs to sack the chef! The food is dreadful ! Such a shame as it's a lovely venue. I won't be returning

Wasn't quite the visit I was expecting, original table time pushed back 15 min as there was a large party which took priority and meant we were delayed in our drink and food order. There appeared to be lots of staff around but it was clear the large table were the priority. Drinks eventually arrived after chasing and food was ordered after the large table were seen too. I ordered the chicken roast which was very dry. We declined dessert due to the previous long wait and requested the bill. Overall not what I was expecting after reading all the positive reviews.

Can’t fault this place, so friendly from the moment we checked in, comfortable bed, lovely and clean and to finish really nice food and delicious breakfast. Would certainly recommend this little gem!

They have been giving a voucher for the meal which I showed the waitress and the manager also saw me with it only to find at the end of a so so meal it didn't run in December .They con people.we use to go a lot because the pizzas are great but don't have the lamb shank no taste at all.The fish and chips are of a good portion but again no flavour and greasy.The weetwood ale is very nice

Enjoyed a pleasant evening meal at The Royal Oak recently. Food was fine and the service was good. The venue is beautiful.

Had dinner and stayed over. The food at dinner was very, very good and made up for the disappointment with the stay. Popcorn cockles with drinks were fab ( though olives out of a jar & not marinated in anything). Starters of spicy prawns and deep fried Brie were great. Mains of mussels with sweet potato fries and steak and ale pie were delicious. Malbec disappointing but the Albariño was gorgeous. Again, Holly was doing twice the work of everyone else and was twice as clued up.

What a lovely place really smart and welcoming. The service was great a nice smiley waitress who new the menu when asked questions about it. The food arrived for 8 of us, all at the same time and piping hot. Most of us had the roast beef dinner which was full of flavour and tender with a great selection of different vegetables. A few of us shared puddings as really we were too full. We just needed to check if they were as good as the dinner and all of these got top marks too. Compliments to the chef and staff I think we've found the best Sunday lunch venue in our area.

We were a party of 4 staying in the Royal Oak for 2 nights and chose to eat in the restaurant on both evenings. The food was wonderful with a large menu selection and very generous portion sizes. We have just returned from a weekend stay at the Royal Oak and we ate in the restaurant on both evenings. My husband and I enjoyed an excellent meal on the first night and then we were joined by a group of 11 friends on the 2nd night ,again the food was to the same high standard. As we were a large party we were asked to pre-order which was no problem and ensured that all of the meals reached the table at the same time,hot and perfectly presented. The menu is varied and there is something to suit all tastes. The staff are very attentive and extremely pleasant. We stay at the hotel quite often and have only ever received 1st class service from Andrew and his co-workers and they always make us very welcome.

Acabamos de regresar de una comida familiar en el Royal Oak, tuvimos que preparar nuestra comida, ya que éramos 12, lo que estaba bien, pero luego nos dijeron que no podíamos comer entrantes ya que nuestra comida estaba siendo "cocinada". Entregado hoy para un almuerzo. Extremadamente tranquilo Teníamos dos sándwiches de club aunque no había huevo en uno. No se nos ofreció una opción de bloomer blanco o marrón (según el menú). Llegaron con un huevo en cada uno en pan de rebanadas blanco básico.

Mi última revisión del Royal Oak fue en diciembre de 2016, en la que di una calificación de 5 estrellas. Sin embargo, ayer estuvimos muy decepcionados con nuestras pizzas para llevar. Las 3 pizzas estaban muy pálidas y poco cocidas, carecían de cualquier sabor y también en ingredientes. La base era bonita y delgada, pero aún carecía del sabor esperado de un horno de pizza especializado.

Enjoyed a good lunch here. Good servings and tasty food. Lovely decor and will for sure to pop in again.

Came in for a meal and drinks yesterday afternoon and was served by a young manager with a beard under the name of Ally or Olly? Was really impressed with the high quality of food and the service provided, young manager had a extensive knowledge of all the gins which helped as I'm a big gin fan! Would highly recommend! And will be coming again soon!

Ate here when we stayed for the weekend. Pork Belly and Crispy Beef Salad starters were both excellent, as was the moules frites and fajitas. Extensive gin menu with paired mixers and garnishes.

Turned up for some food on a lovely Sunday with the kids came out of our way as reviews were good and was closed 30 mins after saying it was open

With the good weather we decided to stop off at the Royal Oak and have an evening drink. The staff were very friendly offering advice on cocktails we may want to try. Drinks came swiftly and again although we were sitting in the outside area and the restaurant was busy staff came out regularly to check we were ok and if we needed anymore drinks. The guy who served us was tall with a beard possibly Ollie? Great venue. Good service and good cocktails. I would highly recommend the Royal Oak

Visited again with our 2 children and all had a fabulous meal. Really can’t fault the food and the staff always make us feel very welcome. The new sports bar is a lovely addition. Completely changes the feel of that end of the pub for the better. We live 20 mins drive away but come to eat here often as we have never had a bad meal and love the pub’s atmosphere.

We live in tarpoley and after giving it another go sadly even though they have made a effort to make a seperate bar area the attitude of the staff is still the same .. we walked into the wooden hut bar bit to order some of the draft beers to which they said they don't do in there we needed to walk down to the other bar to order to which we did we were greeted by a miserable staff member with a. Obvious chip on his shoulder .. no hello first words were .. you order drinks over there .. we explaianed we wanted some of the local beers on draft and we're told to come to him he asked what we wanted then no please thanks nothing.. we'll sorry for putting you out for trying to order drinks in a bar!! Stayed for one and left.. they have had a issue with staff and service here before the refurbished bar was put in shame they couldn't of give. Some hospitality training before reopening walk five minuite down the road and go to the Morris dancer friendly professional staff who can't do enough for you a lot more welcoming than this place !

This pub is fairly local to us and does great food for a reasonable price. I would definitely recommend it. One of the few places I have eaten that do beef short rib - which is excellent.

Had planned to go to The Farmers Arms - inexplicably shut ...Morris Dancer crammed full so we returned to the Royal Oak. Surprised at how quiet it was - but the food was excellent. Hot and tasty with generous portions. Had to take back my drink which tasted odd ...waitress apologised, offered a taste of another drink and when I liked it poured a full glass in exchange - very pleased with sensible response. Also pleased to get a voucher for a return visit with 40% discount. Thanks to the team - we will be back!

Stayed at hotel and eat here two nights. Preferred my meal on the first night when I had a double pork chop. Really thick and very tender and tasty. Had whitebait for starters both night which was a very good portion. Had the Sunday roast on second meal. Veg very nice with very good roast potatoes. Was disappointed with the meat which was too well done for my liking and a little on the thin side. Service good and prices for quality fine.

We have been here several times in the past. Over the years though it has slipped each time. After a big gap and a recommendation we decided to give it another go.

We have stayed and ate in this hotel 4 times over past few years. The hotel rooms are very good but the food has gone downhill. Several dishes had to be returned particularly the fish pie - lacking fish just tasted like watery potatoes. To be fair some of the evening meals were okay. The breakfasts used to be good but they had run out of a couple of items which is not acceptable and the tea was so week. It’s a pity because there is always a good atmosphere in the pub restaurant and most of the waiting staff very friendly. Given 3 stars because the hotel rooms are comfortable otherwise it would be two.

A group of 9 of us went to the Royal Oak for lunch on a Tuesday and the food and the service was wonderful! Our main courses were piping hot, tasty and delicious and our puddings were fresh, filling and the perfect way to finish of our meal. I had the Steak & Ale pie, with extra onion rings followed by the Sticky Toffee Apple Pudding and cream - utterly delicious!

Great food great service, great atmosphere, went to celebrate my 70th Birthday with my friends from work, had a lovely time loved that we had a round table as you can see and talk to everyone, and they put us in a room of our own which was a nice touch

The whole ambiance of the place is not good.The food leaves a lot to be desired in quality in fact apart from the steak it is just not good and the smell of the fafitas coming from adjoining tables is horrible.

Really good visit to the Royal Oak yesterday with 10 of us for Christmas lunch. Service was great, very attentive, and all the food was delicious. The vegetarian choice was particularly appreciated for being imaginative and very tasty.

We went there with my wife for 2 days . We had the lunch I had spaghetti seafood the pasta is over cooked I can’t complain cause I not that kind of person and my wife had the bagel it was okay. I gave him another chance and went for dinner starters I choose the Musseles half of them is close and the taste is blend second course I go for the rib-eye and it was disaster the meat was grey and the taste was disaster the Cheff needs to go again to the school couse maybe he don’t know that there is USDA meat & black Angus don’t trust the chefs even my wife pizza is the same like a pitta bread and especially the owner his face always angry he needs to go for a course of hospitality be careful about the food and the biggest thing is no drinks menu charge how much he wants don’t eat there . There is more nice restaurant in that town

My partner and I went our for a few drinks at The Royal Oak. The guns were great with perfect garnishes for each. The brockmans with the berries were delicious! Can’t wait to get childcare again so we can enjoy a nice gin or two!

We arrived without a reservation on a Tuesday assuming it would be quiet- not so - but the friendly staff fitted us in. We chose lamb and duck both were perfectly cooked.

Stayed two nights. Good menu with wide variety of dishes. Helpful staff and excellent food. Good atmosphere and a real effort to please. Thoroughly recommended

had an evening meal in here and it was really nice and very good value. We had 2 courses each and a dessert between us and 2 drinks each and it cost around £70. The service was really good and quick and the setting was very nice and comfortable.

Excellent attentive service and great food. We had ribs and kids meals and ice cream. The roast beef looked good too: pinky red and proper sizes.

Celebrated our Friends 50th last night with a group of 18.The Group preordered food days before to avoid any issues.I shall start on the positives there was plenty of Room and the waiters and service was good and staff friendly.We have reflected on our visit and feel very underwhelmed by the food and so as not to spoil his birthday we thought we would provide some feedback post visit.My girlfriend and I shared some Nachos which were distinctly average they were covered in shop bought Guacamole & Salsa which was not nice.For mains We had fajitas chicken & my GF had Halloumi.One of the party who was sitting next to me asked where the chicken was in my fajitas and I said underneath the peppers swimming in grease- there was literally 4 small pieces of chicken and my girlfriends Halloumi was no better.Bearing in mind the party spent over £600 for two courses and Wine this represented very poor value.We certainly won't be returning or recommending based on this disappointing food.In this village pub If you are going to charge restaurant prices at least serve restaurant standard food.

After an early exit from Oulton Park, I decided on something to eat in the late afternoon. What a good choice of venue for lunch! Pleasant and relaxed service and a superb meal of grilled Hake on a bed of ham and pea Rissoto. Everything was perfection, including a great glass of oak aged Rioja, which is classified as one of their house wines!

We hadn't been here for a while and we were quite surprised how quiet it was, so once we found someone we were quickly seated. Service was quite slow, no real issue, although we did wait ages to get someone so we could pay the bill!Our choice of food was generally OK, although the pork was slightly over cooked.

This is a seriously good restaurant which to be honest came as a bit of a surprise given the location in the wilds of North Wales.The Chef has constructed a menu that offers a select range of inventive dishes.Our starters were mackerel three ways and scallops with belly pork and apple sauce. Mains were vegetable risotto, certainly not as boring as the name, and a celebration of lamb with confit potato. Compressed pineapple with coconut and a pistachio olive cake with homemade ice cream made up the deserts. My poor memory for the proper names of each dish means I have not done them justice.The service in the restaurant was discrete and efficient, something others could learn from!The wine list would cater for most tastes and was reasonably priced.

I love eating at Hungry Horse pubs, the food is always good, promt service and friendly staff. They always have plenty of staff to help you with everything, from advise about your choice of meal to knowledge about things/places to visit in the vicinity.Wish we had one in Heysham........Please
