Great little hidden gem. Came in for a couple of pints whilst out walking. Nice fire going, staff are always welcoming and friendly and seem to genuinely want to actually be at work. Relaxed atmosphere. However, even some of the staff commented on the music was a little depressing lol. Also have to mention the dog treats on the dog were great … didn’t last long though . We have eaten here in the past, it’s well worth a visit We will be back.

This used to be the place to go around the Buxton area but it seems to have changed from when we last went a few years ago. Not only do the prices seem to have shot up but the food quality isn't what it once was, the lasagne i had was totally bland and chips were soggy and full of cooking fat. We will try again in a few months hoping it was a one off.

Came here with a group of 15, staff were very friendly and accommodating. Very impressed with how the staff were on it, professional and efficient despite it being a very busy Sunday roast service! The food was delicious, beyond expectations! I had the Cajun open sourdough sandwich - highly recommend! Most of the group had lamb roasts and clean plates all round! We sat outside for a drink afterwards in the beer garden in lovely well maintained surroundings, very impressed and will definitely be back! Thank you

After reading the reviews, we were looking forward to a lovely meal during out stay here. Unfortunately, the standard of the food we were given was not great. Both of us had a pie; one veggie and one beef. The butternut squash was almost non existent in the veggie pie, despite it being advertised as a butternut and feta pie. Our chips were possibly among the worst I've had at what seems like it should be a decent gastro pub. It completely put me off even trying a dessert. Service was friendly enough, although they clearly wanted the table back quickly given the speed they served. I don't particularly like feeling rushed to eat my food. All in all, quite a disappointment.

We were recommended this Establishment by the Host of the Accommodation where we staying for a Week's Vacation. Having Booked a Table for 4 we were pleasantly greeted by a Jovial Waitress & shown to our Table. We ordered a selection of Meals from the Menu & was told that the Lambs Liver would be served on the Pink Side. My Sirloin Steak, I requested for it be cooked Medium Rare/more on the Rare Side. The meals arrived & unfortunately my Steak was Medium to well done, my College's Lamb was also well done. We asked the waitress if we could speak to the Owner. He was most apologetic, my Steak was removed my College decided to persevere with the Liver Dish. The owner stated that at the end of the Meal that a Settlement/Refund would be made. Unfortunately by the time my Replacement Steak arrived my other 3 Colleges had finished their Meals. Two of us ordered Desserts that were Scrumptious. On completion of the Meal we was told to go to the Bar were the Bill would be presented. On receipt there was no Refund & asking to see the Owner once again we were told that He was taking His Dog for a Walk. We waited for Him to Return but the Waitress having spoken to Him asked if we would accept the Cost of the 2 Deserts being Deleted from our Bill. We duly accepted but on Hindsight I don't think it reflected our Experience of the Evg. To compound Matters we were all unaware that there were Specials, that were only advertised on a Wall Mounted Black Board adjacent the Bar. I know on my Part I would have had the Lamb Rump in lieu of the Steak & my Wife would have had the Sea Bass in lieu of the Pork Belly.

We’ve been eating at The Royal Oak for many years and have always enjoyed the food, beer and service there and appreciated it’s good value for money. It has recently changed hands but we still felt that the standards built up over many years would be maintained. Unfortunately not! The beer was good, but service was not sharp and they seemed more interested in talking to each other than to we customers. The menu options have been reduced with a number of favourites removed. We ordered the seafood sharing platter which was good, but the bread indifferent. Our mains were both disappointing. My lambs liver was not as good as it usually is, and my wife’ pork 3 ways sounded better on paper than it was i reality! She’d asked for no gravy but that request was not met and intimately she left a lot of the meal. We told a more mature lady, who I assume was in charge, but she basically blamed us and said we should have told them when the meal was presented. No attempt was made to mitigate our complaint by a free coffee or something similar, so no tip was left. We drive out from Buxton especially in the past to go here, but we won’t in future and seeing how quiet it was looks like others are voting with their feet. Real shame that a great good value restaurant has list us as customers

We visited for drinks at 5pm a couple of days after the 12/4 relaxation allowing pubs to serve outside. We had no reservation but were shown to the only available table which we were told we could have for an hour. We were seated in a tented structure with patio heaters which I assume has been constructed specifically for the period until pubs can serve inside again. It was our first pub visit for over 5 months and I was delighted to see 3 real ales on offer, with pump clips displayed to show what they had. Chill out background music added to the early evening buzz and it was a highly enjoyable reminder of what we’d been missing. There were plenty of efficient waiting staff and food served looked good. If I had to select a first post-lockdown pub visit it would look just like this. The pub in Monyash had a sign in the window saying they weren’t opening until 17 May and though I don’t know their circumstances, I guess outdoor table service is just too much hassle for some. Top marks to those businesses prepared to invest and embrace the changed circumstances as best they can. This is one, they should be congratulated and supported.

Ate here twice this month - On both occasions the food and ambience was excellent. The pub itself has several eating areas, which is nice, and adds a 'cosy' feel to it. The service is prompt and friendly, and waiting times are good - even when busy. The menu is extensive, and does seem to change a little week on week from what I saw! My only comment to the owners if you read tis!) is that there did seem to be a lot of melty cheese dishes and also the starters seemed a little limited compared to the main menu; That being said, the food was terrific. The lasagne was ordered both times! We also found the dessert menu to be quite pricey, although looking at the portions, I could probably do 2!I'd recommend this as a decent pub to stop at in the peaks. It also has a camping barn and campsite. The campsite was too wet for us to stop in, but the barn was excellent - fresh clean linen and an 8 bedroom bunk room for just 2 of us, which was nice given the tricky times we are in!

We booked after seeing the good reviews. Unfortunately our experience was not positive. First of all we were placed on a table by an open window and the cold air blowing in was like being in a wind tunnel and two of our party kept their coats on. When asked we were told that they had to keep the window open due to covid but did not suggest we could move, On reflection we should have eaten outside as the sun was shining and it would acutally have been warmer. Secondly the food was poor. We chose the Wagyu beef roast which the menu stated would be served pink. One of our party stated it was like a school dinner, and actually that was not far off, the meat was overcooked, tough and pretty tasteless. vegetables and potatoes were average. Other than being nice to have a meal out in a nice location we felt we would have preferred to have had a drive in the area and returned home to eat. Sorry The Royal Oak but definitely not on our list to return.

Lovely pub with gorgeous food! However, on our visit the gluten free options were limited, which was disappointing! Overall the food was excellent quality and we had a lovely evening!

We have been to the Royal Oak lots of times as a favourite place for really good food. We were so disappointed we only stayed half an hour. The steak and ale pie was very disappointing. The meat was tough, no taste of Stilton and it wasn't hot. It appears that due to past popularity the place has become complacent which is odd given the current circumstances. It is also over priced. Won't be going back.

Called in on a whim on a miserable Monday afternoon. My partner & myself both chose the beef & Stilton pie, when they arrived we were blown away by the portion size, the pie was absolutely packed with chunks of tender meat. Hands down the best pie I’ve ever eaten, would have loved to try a pudding but couldn’t eat another morsel after the pie, chips and vegetables. Lovely country setting, ample parking, friendly staff, an absolute gem, will definitely return on our next visit to the peaks

Parking, cosy atmosphere, friendly staff, we were even an hour late and they still managed to accommodate us without making us feel like we were being rushed. Good food, decent price. Social distancing friendly. Would return!

Came with the family for dinner. Great friendly service and fantastic food. The kids burger went down a treat, the ribs were amazing as was the steak and the beef & stilton pie was outstanding. Would deffinatley recommend and will be back the next time we're in the area.

Could do better with COVID measures. The pub had too many tables in, so waiters had to squeeze past diners. Not a single member of staff had a mask or visor on and the tables were ‘cleaned’ with a scruffy cloth. It’s a shame as the food was nice but they are really behind other venues with their safety measures. We camped and the toilets only appeared to be cleaned once a day, which isn’t enough in the current climate. If they fixed these measures I’d come back as the location is great.

Went for a family day out to Buxton. Lovely pub with a great roast. Very crispy potatoes! Dessert was also very good. Good portion sizes, and great staff and atmosphere. We'll be coming again soon!

Hubby and I camped 3 nights. Campsite good but basic. No overhead cover for washing up, no electrical point for drying hair, can be cold even in summer walking around with wet hair. Communal toilets ran out of soap, with signs almost everywhere advising hand washing, I reported lack of soap and it was instantly replenished. Other than that the campsite was perfect for our needs. Food was outstanding, absolutely fantastic, a little pricey and we noted with the “eat out help out” deal they had increased some menu choices, we checked the prices 3 weeks prior and some had increased ! We would definitely eat at pub again.Showers/toilets in need of updating, basic but functional. One group of campers (all female) did not observe the 10pm no noise policy - 3am we could still hear them talking, banging car doors, Both nights we were staying, no respect at all for others trying to sleep with 5 hour drive home next day !

Fourth visit and standards have slipped. Plates were cold my wife’s chips were cold the sea bass was delicious but the batter was undercooked. Also thought servers had to wear gloves but not sure on that as it was our first meal out since lockdown. My steak and ale pie was very tasty chips were different and fat but hot. Service and staff were five star. Will define go again as this may have been an off day

We always head to the Royal Oak when in the area. Today was at Matlock so booked for lunch Belly pork meal fine, but steak and bq ribs a shocker. Ribs no meat on them how the chef didn’t notice this is incredible and the steak two small pieces over cooked with some appeared to be frozen chips of which are usually lovely . Hope it’s a one off otherwise wouldn’t travel from Sheffield to be disappointed

We didn't book, but the staff were accommodating and friendly in finding us a table. We ate lunch here and the food was amazing! My partner ate the burger and said it was one of the best he'd ever eaten. Which is a massive compliment seeing as he orders a burger nearly everytime we eat out.I had the ploughmans lunch which was really delicious. Would of liked a bit more chutney for the cheese though. For dessert my daughter ate the brownie which she liked and I had the banoffee pie which was delicious, very indulgent. The atmosphere was great and the service excellent. Food was reasonably priced too. We would definitely return when we're next in the area.

The iced coffee and brownie was amazing. The shop is small but has a great atmosphere and products. My friend had a sandwich and it was great!

Never open at the correct times. Visited three times over the same week and waited 30-60 minutes before giving up and climbing nearby Mam Tor as they were not open even though they said they were.
