Ok, to be clear, there are TWO pubs called The Royal Oak in Bath, this refers to the one on Lower Bristol Road, though I think some reviewers (and photos) are confused. (I do not beleive this pub does food at all.) This pub is a no-nonsense beer pub, with a fine beer selection, some now brewed by themselves, others a fine selection of keg and cask, UK and foreign brewers. If you are in need of a proper pub, look no further.

I've been here a number of times. As a local I would say it is one of the best pubs in Bath. They have a great selection of drinks, especially ales and ciders. It's a nice sociable friendly place to wind down after a crazy/hectic day. It must've been the first time I imbibed for months. Nice warm day for it, too. Interesting, initially confusing layout, but they squeeze in two Bars, an outside partially-covered area, a separate carpark, toilets, and a stage area. They encourage small bands and experimental music, and one of the bands in the night I was there, were from Germany, so it's not just local musicians as you might expect. I'd been thinking of popping in for a while, ever since they made themselves more visible on social media, by posting a mug a day during the lockdown, but it wasn't until a vocalist from one of the bands invited me, that I went. They're only open from late afternoon onwards: That's surprising until you remember all Pubs used to be like that.

I had the most amazing time here! I consider this pub my current favourite now, firstly though-although the front entrance is just off the main road, when sat in the stylish, cosy beer garden I honestly forgot that a busy road was so nearby and genuinely had a complete absence of noticeable road-noise for my whole visit, (that is applicable to all, unless in the rare circumstance I would intentionally notice and pay attention to the road. a skilled job has been done ti make the garden feel enclosed and cosy as an important addition ti the main indoor space of the pub. Through covid I have been very careful, especially as I had major surgery and had mobility confinements- the Royal Oak is - in my opinion - a haven, I love how they are one of the increasingly small pubs in Bath that offer local small-brew/batch ciders and not just thatchers. The bar staff were exceptional at going above and beyond to suit our groups needs, but yet also ensuring that between them they managed the tables already seated. Despite the other positive notes- in all honesty even if the pub was in a ditch I genuinely would have a drink again just purely due to the bar staff alone. Sam and Alex are exceptional at their jobs and I am struggling to find adequate words to praise them if I'm honest. I will DEFINITELY be back, and I will also be telling friends how lovely my experience here was. Too marks, and Sam and Alex- please don't change, you both deserve the highest of commendations😊💚✨🎅🏼❤️

We paid a visit to this pub as it was said that it was now a Gastro pub from the outside it looked hopeful. Sadly parking was an issue but we decided to park and walk . Once inside you find a normal city pub large screens showing SKY sports and a bar with a number of men all facing the back wall of the bar with half empty pints before them . The barman was helpful and friendly, the drinks were cheap . I can imagine that on a match day it would be busy, but other nights very quiet. Sadly the pub had an aromatic smell of stale beer, broken dreams and urine. We didn't try the food, in fact when the drinks were finished we left . The atmosphere was not one that I would want to take in for long . Having seen the gentleman who sat still looking downcast into the last dregs of their pints I could not help but feel that they should do the same and leave. It was sad in the right hands it could have a lot to offer .

Amazing restaurant, awful service. I hate to write a bad review as someone who works in hospitality but this was a particularly bad experience ! Today we headed to the beckfrord bottle shop for some dinner and a glass of wine. We were told that we had the table until 8pm which we expressed was completely fine ! However, the waitress (dark hair, glasses and checked grey overshirt) made us feel totally uncomfortable from the moment we arrived. We were rushed to order drink and then food, she was panicked almost from the moment we sat down. We asked for a minute so we could all discuss what we wanted to order and she was clearly very unimpressed at this. Everything seemed fine again and different members of staff brought us our food and were friendly and accommodating. Then it came to 7.40pm and the rushing and rudeness came back and worse. She asked us to pay the bill and we explained we’d already understood that we had to be done by 8 so could we enjoy our glasses of wine and pay at the end of the meal. She came back 2 minutes later and forced us to pay the bill with 20 minutes to go. This shouldn’t even have been on our mind, as we were trying to enjoy a nice meal. Why did there have to be such a stress on the time limit when being out for dinner ! As I mentioned above, I work in hospitality and I’m very used to annoying customers etc. However, we are a pretty laid back group of people. This was such a shame as the food and wine was amazing, really she ruined what could have been such a lovely evening! I think maybe the waitress needed a break ?

It was my friends birthday and decided we should have tea here. The room was amazing and the live music was superb. The sweet part of the tea was great as was the savoury Welsh rarebit. The sandwiches were OK but not up to the same standard as everything else. The absolute highlight for me was the staff: we were greeted at the door by the amazing James, he is a gracious, kind, accommodating and beautiful human being!! We were also assisted by Eugine and Davide who were super helpful as well as funny and with very good people skills! (Now let’s go back to James)- I told James that I didn’t eat meat so he sorted out a different sandwich for me and also made a recommendation for the tea…he did not let me down, it was the best cup of tea I’ve ever had in my life! I told him it was my friends birthday and they sent over a cute little cup cake as the band played “happy birthday”. A stupendous day was had by all…thank you so much for having us and helping us create memories!
