My first visit here in a little over 30 years and to be honest it was well worth the drive. We recieved a friendly warm welcome from both behind the bar and the locals alike. The Royal Oak being a Free House offered a fine selection of quality beers & ciders that were equally well presented. If we are to retain the traditional British Pub, it's important to support public houses like the Oak, following my visit I don't think you will be disappointed

The menu is mostly standard pub grub: but that's fine - it doesn't claim to be anything else. Prices are very competitive. Okay service was rather quirky and odd, albeit friendly. That'd be okay if our meals were good. But our food was not. Some items were undercooked; some had an unpleasant taint; some over-seasoned

We ate here on a friday evening a few weeks ago and enjoyed our meal We booked a table for 4 and went on sunday for lunch and was most disappointed There was no one else eating when we went in which was a surprise The meal was not hot and we had to ask for a serving spoon We were asked if we was enjoying the meal and told them we were not happy as the food was not hot apart from the cauliflower cheese which was served separately Staff came back after the meal and asked again if we had enjoyed the meal and we said again we were not happy We asked for the bill which we paid in full but was told we had not paid enough and they asked for another 2 pence which was the final insult

Went here Friday night due to the good reviews. Didn't really think much to it as it felt run down and had very bright lighting which made it feel stark and uninviting. It was serving about 3 cask ales and had the wainwright beer. Unfortunately it had not been well looked after was cloudy and tasted awful. In fairness we should have returned it but didn't really like the feel of the place so left. Can't comment on the food as the kitchen was shut for refurbishment.

A real shame this once traditional pub has had the character stripped out & resembles a 70s lounge in council Dwelling. The food is basic, service poor, the Dart board is located right next to the dining tables which are below the TV which incidentally had Darts on for the duration of all our visits, the Landlord seams obsessed with in darts & the bar staff seamed to left to their own devices. Several people with dogs were turned away, however the Landlords Alsatian did happily wander into the bar from the Kitchen during our meals.Parking is limited to a dozen or so spaces with the scrap kitchen equipment taking up a couple of those. The drinks range is limited, atmosphere lunch time or evening no existent so all in all very poor & not recommend.

After being turned away from an eating establishiment down the road at only 8pm on a Sat night, we were luckily advised to try The Royal Oak. As we were only passing through the area on a narrow boat and friends had called to visit us, we did not know the area! Fortunately they were still serving and after a warm welcome, three of us enjoyed the special of either Chinese or an Indian curry - very good value for money! We then decided to have a sweet and at the request of "lots of custard please!", we were presented with a jug of custard which was perfect for our needs! If you are in this area, well worth the short drive out of Brewood to have a meal here! Great food and very friendly, helpful staff!

Downloaded the menu prior to our lvisit - looked great. When we arrived we were given 2 drink stained pieces of A4 paper with badly copied, faded writing on. The barman apologised for the 'menus' stating that they had "only taken over a month ago". I looked at these and pointed out that they bore no resemblance to the menu on their website. He explained that the website belonged to the previous owners and it hadn't been taken down because "they'd only been there a month".The 'new' menu was basic pub grub (which is fine but not what we were expecting) and we were starving so we ordered the gammon and a chicken burger. There were only 2 other people in the pub but the music being played was loud and thumping, we had to shout at each other to be heard. We hoped it was just the one song but the next and the next was as bad so we had to ask to turn the music down which they did. A few minutes later, a different barman came in and turned it up again. I explained that it had just been turned down and his response was "the last people in here asked me to turn it up". I pointed out those people were no longer here! The food came. We'd also ordered 'homemade coleslaw' for £2.50 as a side which came in a pot about a third of the size of a ramekin i.e. tiny! The gammon was ok but the chicken burger (a breast of chicken) was overcooked and dry. Reviews on Tripadvisor had talked about the amazing homemade chips but ours were just frozen. I guess the previous owners did the homemade ones! I wanted to complain about the chicken but my other half just wanted to get out of there. We asked for the bill. I had booked using a Tastecard but when the bill came, the Tastecard discount hadn't been taken off. I sorted that but then couldn't pay by card as the machine wasn't working "because they'd only been there a month". Luckily I had enough cash! Not a great experience. The atmosphere was poor, the food was below average, the service wasn't great and the menu was uninspired. Overall, an unpleasant experience. These issues should have been sorted in the month. Simple things like the state of the menus, just a small issue but easily sorted - first impressions are everything! On this basis the current owners will be lucky if they last another month!A real shame as the place has great potential.

I have eaten here twice in the last few months. Very warm welcome, friendly service, best kept ale in the locality. The quality of the food is very good, the home-made chips are divine and you'd need to be a big eater to manage dessert. My cutlery has been through the dishwasher and not checked before laying out as traces of food debris were visible, but I would rather that small malfunction than a pint of warm lager any day. I took a business colleague just to get a balanced impression and it got the thumbs up. Bottom line - it's well worth a visit, you can eat safely here and the ambience is OK, - don't be put off by the pool table in the bar...this is a small hostelry, but (and only a small but)....it's still a pub, not a restaurant as such...and other than on specials nights, you can expect to pay restaurant prices for a standard, yet high quality meal, which on balance are, in my opinion about 15-20% higher than I felt really comfortable paying.

We visited The Royal Oak at Bishops Wood for the first time at the beginning of January. We had heard that it had been recently taken over (found out it was 14 months ago!) and was now serving very drinkable real ale - so we had to check it out for ourselves. The Landlord was extremely welcoming and YES the real ale was very drinkable - Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild and Bathams Bitter to name two. The food was also of excellent quality with ingredients sourced locally. The menu consists of the usual pub dishes but using the best cuts of meats and the finest of ingredients. The Mushroom Stroganoff being the best I have ever tasted. The restaurant appears to have been recently decorated and modern leather chairs finish off the dining area with a luxurious touch. We returned again last week and experienced the same warm welcome and quality of food and beer. Well worth a visit. N.B. it does not serve food on a Monday evening.

Ten of us went from a friendship group, only a couple of other people there, so no atmosphere. Ordered meals and Drinks, one was even asked if they wanted egg or pineapple with their gammon. The meals were nice and hot but not what we ordered. No eggs, no tomatoes, no peas. Everything was substituted by tomatoless salad, not even an egg and was substituted with the pineapple which had been offered. I asked what real ale have you got. Only Banks Bitter which I had, it tasted like vinegar which they had back and with nothing else to drink. Did not want anything else but was not offered a refund. We were on a recce for our Christmas dinner, but will give this one a miss. NB Not all the meals are listed for me to include in the post
