My wife and I arrived a little late for lunch - our son and son-in-law and Billy the dog were already there. For a busy Sunday service our host, Inez, was relaxed and unruffled by the delay. The service and food was superb, we felt welcome and really enjoyed ourselves. The whole team (mainly family) seemed to really enjoy themselves and were so friendly you felt that you had been invited into the family home !

A lovely gentle welcome greeted us as we walked in wet and bedraggled from a walk in the hills above. The pub is airy, clean and spacious and we found a varied menu that would suit all tastes, traditional or other. We chose the Senegambia Yasseh sea bass! Fabulous for a warming meal on a fresh autumn day! We will go again!

I give the Royal Oak in Great Wishford (Wishford Magna) in Wiltshire, my highest possible recommendation as it is quite simply everything that is great and lovely about a traditional English pub and also has two open fires, a large restaurant with an excellent chef and a wonderful landlady, who runs the pub with her daughters. It was the inviting appearance of the pub, in its stunning setting, that made us want to go in, but my rating is is catapulted from Great to EXCELLENT because of the rich, warm welcome we received from the Landlady Inês as we walked in. I felt warmth from this amazing lady before she even spoke, and when she did, her strength of character, warm motherly charm and kindness shone like a star and I resolved there and then to return the next day for a meal with friends. Six of us enjoyed a splendid meal the next evening from the extraordinary “pub grub” menu where every dish has a unique twist to elevate it above normal expectations. We also indulged deeply into the huge selection of gins on offer to make it a real night to remember. It is is not unusual to want to return to a great pub, but it is a rare and wonderful thing to feel such a connection with another human being who you’ve only just met, but I was unable to leave without asking Inêz for a hug. I’ll never forget meeting this incredible woman and will certainly return to the pub when next in Wiltshire. The Royal Oak regularly offer’s live music and Sunday roasts, and we’re told that curries, made by the African chef are served using a recipe that he will not share with anyone.

I booked a table for a family lunch today, to celebrate the Diamond Wedding Anniversary for my husband and I. We were welcomed by the Landlady/owner Inez, a delightful lady with a wonderfully warm and friendly personality. The carvery lunch was impressive with a colourful and well prepared choice of vegetables and excellent meat joints - our beef was succulent and tender. My daughter-in-law enjoyed the Cashew nut roast with cranberry sauce. We didn't have appetite enough for the tempting sounding Sticky toffee pudding or Apple pie, but enjoyed the choice of nicely served ice ice creams to complete our meal. It was lovely to relax with our sons and daughters-in-law over an excellent lunch in a quirky and welcoming village pub.

Having visited the area house hunting we trundled our way along the country lanes nestling between the railway and the river Wylye avoiding the main 'drag' looking for somewhere to eat. The Royal Oak practically leapt out in front of the car with its hands in the air screaming 'here I am'! It worked, we pulled over. Barely through the door and we were being wlecomed like old friends and immediately felt at home. Great service with top food to follow, what's not to like. A real family owned, traditionally run pub, this was a delightful find. And their menu twists & turns like a twisty, turny thing; they do faggots for goodness sake, nobody does faggots, with several African curries thrown in for good measure!

Popped into the Royal Oak on our way back from Devon to grab a snack. There was a large party of people due in, but the positive young lady in the bar said that she would make a couple of sandwiches for us. The sandwiches were half baguettes, but were not overly crusty like some, which can be difficult to eat. These were very tasty too. There was a BLT and a Crayfish sandwich served with chunky chips, which came to £17.90, perhaps a little expensive for some, but the quality was very good. A 250ml Pinot was £7.50, a 175ml Shiraz was £6.15 and a bottle of non alcoholic beer was £4.25. The overall bill was £38.45.

We visited on a quiet Friday. The welcome was warm, the service relaxed and pleasant, the food good quality and value but not cheap. One of the chefs is from The Gambia, so we both chose African main courses. The chicken yasseh was a slightly sour dry curry. There’s a fish variant if you prefer. The African (beef) curry was hot without being overwhelming. Both were delicious and very filling. The menu is quite wide with traditional pub fare as well as other less usual dishes; also sandwiches at least at lunch time. Puds will have to wait for our next visit, which I hope will be soon.

This is really one of the last typical English Pubs and the owner is quite a good chap - always around, it seems and chatting and entertaining his guests.

I wish this was my local! It is friendly from the moment you walk in and you are made to feel welcome. The food is really great and imaginative too. No matter whether you are a carnivore or, like us, vegetarians, there is a good, varied choice. The beer is well kept and a wide choice - you can even ask for tasters to help decide between the various options. I would definitely go back whenever I am in the area.

Driving through Wiltshire we were closing in on Salisbury at lunch time. We didn’t want to make a stop in the city, so we started to look for a pub in the countryside. After a lot of driving around we found the Royal Oak in Great Wishford. It seemed a bit sleepy, but then again so did Great Wishford. You can’t expect liveliness some miles off the main roads. Food was good, service friendly and nice – we got what we came for!

Found this place whilst driving home from a weekend in Bournemouth.. and so glad that we did! The welcome is the friendliest I have had in a long time, everyone is welcomed like old friends. The landlord is every bit the definition of what a landlord should be. Funny, kind and the perfect host.

Dropped in here on the off-chance they’d still be serving food at 3.30pm on a Saturday, and that they were happy for us to bring our dog in. Indeed they were, on both counts, and we were made to feel very welcome, ordered drinks and the server opened a bill for us. Good selection of lagers and ciders. Kids were invited to explore and there were some games for them to play (connect4, trivial pursuit etc) while we waited for our meals which were cooked to order. The menu was tempting and we eventually chose burgers and a curry. The burgers were pretty much the best we’ve had anywhere, they appeared home made, rich meaty and herby and came with a tasty salad and really great Home made chips. The curry came with poppadom and chutney and was equally delicious. This is a lovely country pub where everyone was helpful and welcoming, we would definitely return.

Made to feel very welcome, food was ample, we had the Sunday carvery. Some veg was a little hard for our taste but overall not bad. Just the flies were abundant and annoying, my husband did mention this to the waitress who just laughed. I don't think we will return although we live quite close

We returned for a family lunch after a couple of recent successful visits. The landlord and landlady are very friendly and accommodating. Our Mum who is almost 90 absolutely loves this place as they make a fuss about her and tailor the experience to her requirements. We all had different dishes and everything was superb. My African chicken dish recommended by the landlord was delightful and different. So nice to see the staples done well ( fish and chips for instance ) , traditional local dishes done as specials (my husband loved his faggots and mash which was on offer ) and something different to the norm. The food was so good we all went for puddings despite the generous main course sizes and these lived up to the mains. Again they were accommodating with special requirements. If you want great friendly service with a varied menu and a welcoming atmosphere We can’t recommend this pub highly enough.

The Royal Oak pub is in the beautiful village of Great Wishford, very near to Grovely Wood. We live near Salisbury and fancied a walk (and a little bit of jogging to keep fit!) in the quiet countryside that we are lucky enough to have surrounding our town.

Upon recommendation we went for lunch after viewing their Italian Menu online. 1) Food was substandard and an insult to anyone of Italian heritage that would have tasted the main course we ordered. 2) Main Course was sent back for being overly seasoned and unpalatable ! 3) Although we were the only two Guests dining (I wonder why !! ) we poured our own wine, albeit no great hardship, however, having our waiter walk by on numerous occasions you would think he would have enquired whether we would like our glasses filling? All in all, the whole meal was disgusting and not commensurate of this establishment !

Booked for lunch with friends and 2 dogs. Extremely friendly staff who cannot do enough for you. Our friends wanted scotch eggs to start but they didn't have any ready. After a short discussion the chef made them some fresh. Delicious!! Salt and pepper squid was tender and tasty and the best moules frites we have had in a long time. A long relaxed lunch which was perfect xx

I was looking forward to a well deserved cuppa after including the Rowdey Cow on my circular walk around Devizes. However what I wasn’t expecting was the cost of a small pot of tea for one. £2.60. You might as well call it £3.00 as the change isn’t going to buy you much, if anything at all. The tea wasn’t even graced with a biscuit. I’m getting tired of being ripped off by cafes charging exorbitant prices for hot flavoured water. If you were with, say, a family of four and you just had tea, you’re talking £10.40. Add to that cake and couple of ice creams, then what does it add up to? 30 maybe. I’m not sure how families survive. £30 is probably enough groceries for an individual for what, 5 days? I’m sorry to judge the Rowdey Cow on the price of its tea, but based on that alone, I’m not filled with much confidence when it comes to recommending a visit to anyone in a tight budget. By contrast the Caen Hill Cafe nearby charges £1.90 for its tea.
