City centre restaurant quality food in a country pub. Loved it. Trout sashimi, best sirloin steak I've had for years, maybe ever, and a chocolate delice washed down with a couple of pints of locally brewed bitter. If you can make a trip here, do it.

We live locally, and on the spur of the moment, decided we'd drop in for dinner. So glad we did! The pub has been transformed into a gastro venue, with an interior both classy and contemporary. With a varied menu, There's an excellent range of choices and from the bar nibbles to the desserts, the food was superb. Beautifully presented, the textures and flavours surpassed expectations and truly, the chef must never leave!! The staff were attentive without being intrusive and front of house, exceptional. The owners have created a wonderful ambience, so much so, we went back this afternoon! Love that it's on our doorstep; if I could rate every aspect separately, it would be tens across the board!

Party of 8 for Sunday lunch. Sadly disappointed. We were seated above the cafe, 'Duchess lounge'. We weren't greeted at all when we arrived, and waited for several minutes before we were told where our table was. Took at least 15 minutes to actually order a drink, and another 10 minutes for it to arrive. Service was terrible throughout the meal. One major issue was that one of our party has dietary requirements, and we emailed beforehand to make them aware of this. However, when the food actually arrived, the waitresses knew nothing about this, and simply said that the chicken dish, 'was all the same'. Really. Food itself was OK. It was ferried from the main building, up the stairs and brought to us. Seems very strange, but it was very busy being mothers day. However, the service was the worst part of our visit. All but one of the staff seem disinterested in providing any form of service, and we felt like an inconvenience. Not once did they smile. Such a shame. Getting parked was also an issue, with such a small car park. All in all, such a let down. It has any of us off visiting again. For a group who eat out regularly, we were all left disappointed.

Identity crisis.. Initial impressions were good, charming owner and lovely interior and decor, with some real thought put into it, however there were a number of points of note. We went early at 6pm on a Saturday evening and there was a large table of us. My wife and I skipped the starter and went straight to main, my Wife had the duck and I had the pie of the day. My Wife said her Duck was ok. My pie of the day was shepherds pie, I was expecting this to be a twist on the classic with some gorgeous buttery pastry filled with the traditional shepherd's pie. It came piping hot, but there was nothing exceptional about it and certainly didn't warrant the price for what is in essence, lamb mince, veg and potatoes. I got with it a small pot of gravy which you could tell had good stock as the backbone to it and some slightly limp tenderstem broccoli. We looked at the desserts and the whole table was unanimous that all the desserts had a theme that they appeared quite overpowering in taste and there were no classics/winter warmers on there for a more subtle palate. We had with us 2 X toddlers and a baby. The restaurant had a kids menu so we were under the impression that it would be kid friendly. Around 90 mins in of being well behaved the toddlers were starting to get a little bored and started to get out of their seats and giggle amongst themselves but never interfered with any guests and were not loud. However the charming owner let himself down a little by asking them to be quiet because they were disturbing the guests, however these guests were some distance away from us in the bar area and they in the restaurant and the children were not loud. We were just in the process of leaving and it was an unnecessary statement. The table collectively spent a lot of money, so the comment about keeping the children down seemed uncouth and disproportionate. If you run a kids menu, expect kids to eat it and kids to be kids, although ill add again ours were not more unruly than any other toddlers. If you are to run a kids menu perhaps don't do so on a Friday and Saturday evening The menu was a little conflicted with a range of caviar being offered next to shepherds pie and burgers In summary, the place had a lovely ambience to it and we want to support our local businesses but it needs to work out whether it's a fine dining restaurant or a family friendly one and the quality of food needs to be better reflected in the pricing.

Had a poor experience from the start. Shown to our table bit after over 15 minutes had to find someone to take a drinks order. Food was mostly OK ( Sunday lunch) although the beef was a little tough. No one came to ask if everything was OK at all during the visit. Our plates were left on the table whilst others were cleared and reset. Had to ask for dessert menu, only to be told we were welcome to have dessert but a large party were coming in, and it might get a bit noisy! That put us off having a pudding. Having said that, the offerings were very pretentious and not in keeping with a Sunday lunch. What's wrong with a twist on apple crumble? I understand that the owners are going for a more upmarket crowd, but we felt that a traditional Sunday lunch should be just that! And expensive to boot!!

We booked a meal at the Duke for a late valentines meal. The restaurant is on the 55 bus route meaning it is easy to get transport from our local town without the hassle of taxis and having one person not drinking. We arrived early for our meal so that we could have a cocktail in the bar. We had the Matcha highball and an old fashioned - both were well crafted and a perfect start to the evening. For the food we decided to go all out with every course. Starting with the warm house bread and charcuterie board. This made a perfect sharing plate. For starters we had the katsu chicken Kiev and crab bao buns. The crab was fresh and the cavier made it extra special, the chicken was crispy with a tasty sauce which compliments the miso garlic butter. For main we had katsu pork and lamb shoulder. Both meats were high quality and the lamb especially was like butter. Finally desert was the peanut mochi (a personal favourite I have every time!) and the pistachio and matcha tiramisu- this was a stunning desert with flavours that compliments each other. The evening was topped off with a final drink in the bar whilst we waited for the bus home. This restaurant is stunning. The level of service and care is wonderful, we kept on saying it was like being in a London restaurant. I also personally love this place due to the gluten free choices. Each course above was gluten free (apart from the bao buns) and to have this range of choice and quality is very rare.

Was a lovely Pub feel but with food of the highest restaurant quality. Me and all my fellow diners were in agreement that it was one of the most delicious roasts i have ever consumed. Delicious! I personally opted for the turkey roast and it was lovely. A twist on a british classic, turkey wrapped in bacon with a beautiful stuffing within, and dont even get me started on those stupendous spuds! Crispy, golden, with a fluffy interior which could be likened to the centre of a cloud. If that cloud were covered in a stunning herb mix of course. If i were to speak of the whole meal i would need a few days to write all the positives but all in all an amazing location with friendly staff and great food.

We visited our "Local" for a Birthday lunch for my very significant Other! We enjoyed one of the best meals we have had in over 30 years together. It was seriously great food, served professionally but with great charm and friendliness and would have been difficult to improve upon. Brandon, with assistance from Will, sorted Front of House impeccably and Matteo's food was to die for from Ann's Caviar Tasting Selection to my scrumptious desert and onwards. I struggle to believe that we are lucky enough to have Brandon and Matteo choose our local, nearly defunct it seemed, Pub from which to "perform". Bao buns and duck, pork and mushroom dumplings in a kombu and porcine broth, bavette steak...all very good. The menu has an Italian and Japanese influence..very refreshing to see something new to the area. I had the house cured salmon for starters which was delectable and my husband had the pork and mushroom tortellini which he said was incredible! We both had the haddock and fries for mains which was also delicious and for dessert (even though we were stuffed) we went for the chocolate tart and the Creme brulee..we was in heaven....the service was attentive and knowledgeable..nothing was too much. We will definitely be returning.

We visited the Duke for the first time this week and we were really impressed. Menu was original with some really interesting looking dishes, which made it a tough decision to pick so we’ll definitely need to go back! The asian influences thought through to ensure a well balanced dishes. Highly recommend the Kimchi Arancinetti and the Pork and Mushroom tortellini starters - very were both fantastic! We’ve already booked to go back for Sunday lunch in a few weeks after recommendations by friends (pictures look incredible!)

Good to see The Duke opened again as a proper venue for food and drink. The Japanese influences across the menu and drinks are interesting and welcome, the proprietors need to ensure that all tastes are catered for however and a wider range of vegetables for example could be considered. The dishes we had were excellent, with tremendous attention to detail especially the sauces. The Mochi for dessert were lovely and a good idea to let the customer decide how much they want. Looking forward to seeing how the menu evolves through the seasons.

Went to The Duke at Hilmarton for a Friday evening dinner with family since it’s changed hands and reopened and can safely say they’ve done an amazing job so far! The food was delicious and varied and I think everyone in our party (there was 6 of us) enjoyed our meals. I particularly enjoyed the Asian twist on a lot of the meals so it had a bit more of a unique feel compared to a lot of the other pubs around the area. We had a very unique starter which was something like a crispy seaweed crisp - it looked odd but was honestly so delicious! I would say the portions sizes are quite small so if you’re a big eater be prepared to spend quite a bit of money or not be totally satisfied, but for someone with a slightly smaller appetite like myself, it was perfect. The owner is lovely and extremely friendly and was quite happy to answer my questions about his new venture in Hilmarton and what he plans on doing with the pub. It’ll be great to see it when the main dining area has been spruced up a bit more to suit the fanciness of the menu but I appreciate that takes time and money. Can’t wait to come back in the future and try the delicious bread again (that was certainly my favourite) and the matcha crème brûlée :) Good luck guys, I really hope you do well at the Duke and we’ll certainly be back!

Restaurant reopened with new captains at the controls, nice light decor, warm friendly welcome, light pleasant atmosphere. Food selection is reasonable as are the prices, the quality and quantity are excellent staff are attentive and friendly. The food is cooked to order so if you want instant food go to McDonalds, if you want a good quality meal, pleasant staff and surroundings, you won't go far wrong with the Duke. Nice garden at the back and your well behaved dogs are welcome with plenty of treats for them too Wheelchair access is available and garden dining overlooking the countryside is an option. The hotel is very good too, I use it as an overflow when I have lots of visitors staying over Update: been returning here regularly since reopening for a Friday evening drink and snack or Sunday afternoon dinner. The menu and quality has matured like a good wine and especially in the colder weather, the roaring wood fire and delicious food is wonderfully welcoming and well worth the effort. We'll keep returning while it's open (closed over Christmas) Returned here many times more with friends and family and the food is still as good today had to grab a box for my desert as it was too tasty to leave today

Hi, I have to tell everyone about my stay at the The Duke Hotel it was a fantastic experience, we booked a 3 night stay with our motorhome. The pitch/field was basic but with a water tap (fresh drinking water) and electric hook up for each pitch and a elan waste point as well all for £20 a night, so 2 adults 2 dogs and a awning really unbelievably vaule. The 2nd night we cooked our own food ( it needed to be used ) I wish now I had put it in the waste bin and gone back to the pub... the food is brilliant, if you want Michelin star food go elsewhere but if you want great food at a very good price this is the place to go triple cooked chips crispy on the outside light and fully on the inside perfectly prepared 6 options to go with them burgers sausages nuggets scampi ect all in a basket and you could struggle to eat it all. Now Sunday lunch I don't have the words to give it justice but ring ahead book a table and give it ago Thank you Frankie for a great time Richard and Nikkie, ella and zabs

We visited the pub for Sunday lunch. The reception when we arrived was very unfriendly from both the barman and the waitress, even though we had booked a table well in advance. There was a big mistake made with our order but we accepted this and did not kick up a fuss, we understand that mistakes can be made. The food was a good standard when it arrived but we never received any further service from the waitress. We were not offered any further drinks, even though other tables around us were being asked. Sadly, the treatment we received made us feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable when it was supposed to be a special occasion. We are locals and will not return, nor will we recommend again. Such a shame as we have been before and enjoyed it previously.

Visited with family for Sunday lunch. The team working were welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food was great value for money and big delicious portions. We had a mix of different roasts and can highly recommend the pork. We will definitely be returning and can recommend it to others wanting somewhere to go for Sunday traditional roast dinners.

My wife and I stayed overnight, spending an evening with friends for a birthday party in the beer garden. They catered for c.40 of us with a spectacular buffet of burgers, chicken, salads, hot dogs, pasta etc. All of the food was tasty, fresh and the chips were incredible. We stayed overnight in one of the lovely rooms in a superking confortable bed, and decided to stay for sunday lunch the next day. The lunch was one of the best roasts I've had. The pork and beef, loads of crackling and sides was soooo tasty. Thank you Neil & Franke. We will be coming to some of your evening events im sure. I would recommend The Duke as a really authentic, fun and well run place and you can see the effort they have put in since taking iver 3 years ago. See you soon Brian & Stace x

While using our local bus service rather than the car we saw flyers on the bus shelter wall that offered Fish and Chips for £8 on Friday 24th June. My wife and I invited our daughter to join us. The Duke is a 5 minutes drive from our home with plenty of parking space. On arrival the car park had more cars than normal, we met the (to us) new owner and staff and found a table. Our drinks order arrived quickly and we, all three, ordered the Fish and Chips. The food and the plates were hot; we all enjoyed our meals. During the course of the meal Neil and Frankie introduced themselves to us. Frankie turned out to be an exuberant lady with a huge smile and a big infectious laugh. We warmed to her immediately. My wife and daughter left before me to shop, I stayed in the bar to chat to a friend I recognised. I soon realised that I knew a couple more of the lads present and was introduced to a few more of them. Unusually for me I accepted a second Guinness; chatted and laughed in good company. Frankie, Neil and other staff members joined in on the conversation that provided the best evening of Craic that I have enjoyed in a long time. Now that we know the people who run The Duke and who have improved it beyond measure we will return for meals and drinks and perhaps return to the idea of The Duke being our local again after the cold hand of two years of Covid that impacted on all of our social lives. Our thanks to Neil, Frankie and the staff for a great evening out.

We have been back here now many times, as a couple, with extended family, with friends and with our three dogs; each and every time we have felt welcome, it has been warm friendly and cheerful. The menu has evolved (particularly the deserts) and we have all enjoyed working our way through the Sunday roast menu - even the fussy pre-teens loved it which is high praise indeed! We use the hotel as spare bedrooms when the grandchildren visit, either for ourselves or the children and the rooms are spacious, pleasant, clean well maintained, warm, welcome and reasonably priced. I would happily recommend the Duke to people of all ages and backgrounds

We all had something different, the silverside beef was tender and well cooked, the pork belly was soft and the crackling crispy, amazing roast potatoes and great Yorkshire puddings. All the be desserts were home made and really luxurious and the service was spot on. We will definitely visit again and can't recommend enough.

Normally chippy was closed so tried this place and I will never go back. Two small cod a large battery sausage and a large chips £24.60 so that was shock but when I got home no large sausage but two small but my God they were rock hard couldn't even get a fork In them had clearly been hanging around for hours so couldn't eat them. One of the bits of fish was undercooked and the chips for so called being large was barely enough for one person. I would have taken it back but live to far away and they would have closed before we got there. Compared to are normal chippy on frome road this place is a joke

Some classic British dishes on the menu, helpful service, and the bar (which is associated with the hotel) has plenty of beers, lagers and wine. Lots of room between the 4 to 5 tables in the main dining area, although I suspect you could eat at tables by the bar. Meanwhile, you’re in a very old stylist building within the Salisbury city centre.

Best fish and chips shop in town. Mostly cooked to order, chips are crispy, fish is always perfectly cooked. Haddock and chips at £9.60 is two quid cheaper than a doner kebab and chips just around the corner. I know what I'd rather have.
