Some classic British dishes on the menu, helpful service, and the bar (which is associated with the hotel) has plenty of beers, lagers and wine. Lots of room between the 4 to 5 tables in the main dining area, although I suspect you could eat at tables by the bar. Meanwhile, you’re in a very old stylist building within the Salisbury city centre.

Service was awful. Waited over 45 minutes for a desert that they had checked on twice and had said was on its way to eventually be told they didn’t have any! Several couples left restaurant after waiting 2 minutes without even being spoke too, ironically there was loads of staff and a manager floating about all seemingly happy to do nothing

We visited here for Sunday Lunch, but did not stay at the hotel. We were struggling to find somewhere for Sunday Lunch because we needed somewhere wheelchair accessible. The staff at White Hart were very helpful and accommodating. They have large revolving doors that can be flattened to allow wheelchair access. The dining room was nice and large with plenty of room the manoeuvre a wheelchair. The Sunday Lunch was a carvery style roast with a selection of meats and vegetables. It was all cooked well. Staff were very helpful helping me to get my Mums lunch and take it over to her because she couldn't do it herself. Thank you for making Sunday Lunch a nice relaxed affair.

We have been lunching in the restaurant for many years only to be told that except for two days a week it would closed and lunches served the lounge and bar areas. Not only that but the set lunch had been dropped altogether. We ended up squatting at a coffee table eating our lunch which was less comfortable than an average pub. As always the staff were helpful although it took a very long time to get served. We understand the change was made as the dining room was running at a loss. Sadly we will not be visiting the White Hart again for lunch unless they revert back to what has been the status quo for many years. GS

Serving an excellent breakfast, including a cooked to order full English breakfast together with fruit, cheese, meats continental cold breakfast. Meals served in bar areas all day. Lunch and evening meals are highly traditional and were excellent. The set menu was excellent value although it would benefit from some additional choices for guests staying longer than a few days. The Ala Carte menu offers a wide range of tasty meals which all fall in the mid price bracket. Reasonably good wine menu also offered to accompany meals. Pleasant and attentive waiter service in a semi formal traditional style restaurant that is a notch or two above regular restaurants commonly found in hotels these days.

Loved the food and the service. Friendly and efficient. Used the gourmet society card for the first time and there was not problems and just applied to the bill. Only downside was that the main dining room was being used for a function so we were in the breakfast room so lacked atmosphere, but the quality of the food totally made up for that. well done would eat there again any time. Desserts were wonderful.

I ate at the Squires Restaurant while staying at the White Hart Inn. It was actually in a different room than normal because of a conference, so few people were there. However, the service was excellent. The first course of pan seared scallops was delicious; the main course of sea bream less so. While the fish was good, it was on a pile of some unidentifiable vegetables. The other couple in the room commented on the same thing. For dessert I had the fruit cup, which was unremarkable. Normally it would have had Chantilly cream on top but I asked them to omit that. The wine list is extensive and good.

I'm glad I didn't read any reviews beforehand as I probably wouldn't have gone. The service was nothing short of excellent. We arrived at 8.30pm on a Friday evening and were looked after very well. I don't recognise the pictures in the photos above so it has clearly been refurbished. All three courses were gorgeous and we were very glad the restaurant we'd intended to go to was full. I'll definitely go again next time we visit Salisbury.

We have occasionally popped into the White Hart for lunch as its a calm environment from the mayhem and noise of Salisbury, always had the most excellent lunch. However on Thursday 17th October, and after a fairly awful procedure at the Odstock Hospital, my husband decided to take me into the White Hart to sit calmly and have lunch. We ordered the triple decker sandwiches and a side order of onion rings (not on the menu as previously but the lovely waitress asked especially for us). The whole lot was cold on arrival at our table and rather than make a fuss as I was feeling quite delicate, we decided to soldier on and eat what we could, pay and leave. But, the sandwiches are not inexpensive and over that weekend I telephoned to discuss this. Nobody available but was told somebody would phone me back. Nobody phoned. I was reminded about this when we had to go into Salisbury again a week later to the same hospital and we decided not to go into the White Hart. I phoned again and was told if the Food manager did not phone me back this time within two or three days to email him. He has not and I am certainly not going to waste my time. There are going to be numerous visits to salisbury and if the Mercure White Hart Hotel are lucky enough to be so busy in this market they can let £40 or so per week go adrift I am certainly not going to chase him up. The cost of the sandwiches are I believe over £10 so a fairly hefty price and we have never been disappointed before but are not going to visit again and the young lady I advised of this fact was totally indifferent.

We wouldn't normally go to a hotel restaurant but we'd been given a gift voucher and this was the only place in Salisbury where we could use it. A large, fairly bland and beige dining room which had the local radio playing in the background! The waiter was attentive but he wasn't supported as well by his kitchen. A couple of vegetarian options although the starter I wanted turned out to have run out. I had the goats cheese terrine which was very light in texture but lacking the nice strong taste that I associate with goats cheese. The menu had said 'baby beets' and celery but what it meant was tiny pieces of beet and two slivers of celery. My partner had a decent sized slab of chicken liver pate which he enjoyed but it came with two strange thin slices of 'bread' which didn't really do the job. I had requested spinach and ricotta tortelloni without a gazpacho dressing (I don't like it) but the chef pretty much insisted in coming up with a watery alternative even though I'd said I was happy without a sauce/dressing. If I were a betting person I'd put money on the tortelloni coming out of a packet - it was chewy with minimal tasteless stuffing (I can buy better in Lidl) and the 'sauce didn't help. The roasted pork belly was apparently good. The desserts were 'interesting'. I had bread and butter pudding (one of our favourites) but it was a disappointment - dense and soggy with an unnecessary caramel (or toffee) sauce and ice cream. The trifle came with small doughnuts on the side, while consisting largely of cream with a small portion of the fruity bit at the bottom. Presentation was curious almost like being in the dimple in the base of an upturned glass. We were the last of a small number of dining guests and for some reason the waiting staff seemed more intent on getting the room ready for breakfast than seeing if needed anything - like the bill.If you're trapped in this hotel on business and it's raining then they do food but if you can get out then do, there's a lot better available outside.PS when I mentioned the radio it was changed to music from a CD straightaway.

Returned after almost two years for a Sunday carvery, as a last minute treat, and we were not disappointed. Although when I telephoned in the morning to be told no further reservations were being taken, we walked in on the off chance and were given a table in a fairly full restaurant. Beef was brilliant, pork slightly dry, vegetables very good and plentiful sauces. Staff served with a smile and were efficient even though quite busy. Puddings were straightforward and good. Overall presentation excellent. With coffee and drinks, (wine and orange) under £20 a head represented very good value. I will not wait another two years before returning!

I was in Salisbury, England, from Salisbury, Maryland, in the States, for the Mayor Making Ceremony. At 1900, I went down to Squires Restaurant, in the hotel. They had a Prix Fix menu of £18 for a three course dinner. I started with a Chicken Liver Parfait with toasted brioche, mixed salad greens and a red onion chutney, which was excellent. I moved on to Grilled fillet of Plaice, with capers, crushed new potatoes, and vegetables cooked the way I like them: hot and crisp. I had two 250ml glasses of Drostdy-Hof Chenin Blanc, Western Cape South Africa (£8@). I finished with a Bakewell Tart with Clotted Cream. The bill, for which I had to wait, was £34. There was no place on the bill to add the gratuity. When I questioned it, I was told, by the restaurant manager, that a tip added to the bill will be absorbed by the hotel and will not reach the server. Therefore, I handed £10 to the server.

Went today as a Salisbury local for afternoon tea. 5.15 Sunday afternoon. As per usual we were ignored by the staff. Young guys and girls oblivious of our presence - not even rushed, just do not put customers first. After 15 minutes I complained to the receptionist, we waited a further five minutes and then left. It has happened before as well.Just not good enough. Also horrible modern art on wall. We went to Red Lion in the end and ended up happy.

Quite a formal yet relaxed atmosphere here, service was friendly and efficient and our particular waitress had a wicked sense of humour too (she needed it to be able to deal with the aloof and rude American guests she had to deal with)Though a very limited a la carte menu the food was of a very high quality and very well presented, and surprisingly not overly expensive. With Salisbury having very few culinary delights on offer Squires certainly made for a pleasant change from all the rest.

Went for a celebration meal at Squires. The place had a strange feeling, not much atmosphere and all the patrons seemed to be competing to see who could be the quietest. The food was, on the whole, OK but the soup starter was far far too salty, to the extent that it was inedible. I did mention this to the waiter, and heard another lady mention the same, however it was not deducted from the bill (and I didn't have the kahunas to ask for it to be, having already moaned about it once!). Disappointed that the chef seems unable to taste his/her food before serving.

My parents love Squires and go regularly. Back in March they took me and my husband along for lunch. Having grown up in Salisbury I always thought that the White Hart was the poshest hotel in the city and so I had always assumed the restaurant would be pricey. I was wrong - four of us ate starter and main course in elegant surroundings with courteous staff for less than £70 total. You can easily spend that for a second-rate meal in a pub. There's a sizeable carvery which everyone else had whilst I - the non-meat eater - had a mushroom risotto delivered to the table. I would have felt a bit left out of the carvery vegetables if my dish hadn't been so good.Despite being quite posh the waiting staff put no pressure on us to buy lots of drinks and offered a jug of water even before we ordered wine and other drinks. My mother was on crutches after a hip operation and a young waiter guided her round the carvery holding her plate so she could balance on her crutches. It's more popular with older diners and does good deals for OAPs and regulars tend to get discount vouchers.

A no-nonsense carvery served in pleasant surroundings, obliging service with a smile.Excellent complimentary breads, average starters, excellent meats, a choice of two and large portions if wanted. Desserts average to very good. We visited this restaurant for my parent's ruby wedding anniversary as we'd seen good write-ups on here and could use our taste card. The evening wasn't quite what we hoped due to incompetencies in the kitchen, but luckily we saw the funny side of the situation and it was handled with panache by Ernst, who served us.The evening began well as there's a great selection on the menu and wine list. We had a lovely bottle of NZ Sauv/Blanc and awaited our starters. 3 out of the 4 of us had crab cakes to start - these arrived containing around 1% crab and 99% potato with an outside so leathery you could probably have used them for batting practice. They were swiftly returned to the kitchen and we all chose the beetroot & goats cheese starter to replace them, which was lovely. Our main course was the other way around, everyone who'd had the crab cakes had lovely mains (duck, lamb, steak) but the person with a nice starter now had a poor main - a smoked cheddar & goats cheese tartlet with no cheese in it yet, strangely, a lot of peas. This was also returned, and we joked that the chef must have misheard when asked to put a lot of cheese in it and put a lot of peas in it instead!! A replacement burger was delivered, sadly this wasn't too special but said diner was by now quite full and didn't return this.Dessert, and we're down to 2 of the 4 diners ordering. One goes for a recommended pistachio brulee which is declared magnificent. I go for the rhubarb & ginger tarte tatin which arrives stone cold. On being sent back to be heated it is put into a microwave and the result is horribly soggy pastry. After tasting the brulee, I decide to replace my sorry tatin with the glorious brulee - which is accompanied by lovely shortbread.Coffee is a resounding success, even including a well floated Irish! On reaching the end of our culinary experience (and a half!) Ernst tells us the entire evening won't be charged, due to the events which have occurred. A lovely gesture as, once replaced, we did have enjoyable meals. At least we got to see the vast majority of the dishes on the extensive menu, just not in the way we might have hoped!Top marks to Ernst for his handling of the entire situation - a lesser experienced member of staff would certainly have struggled. Investigation by management of failings by the chefs on duty is suggested.

We've found restaurants in Salisbury disappointing - alot of chains, with fairly uninspiring food, variable service, and not good value for money. This one is different tho. Despite being part of the Mercure chain (!), the food was fantastic - sensible portion sizes, beautifully presented, lovely tastes and textures. Wines were good and fair value (given usual restaurant markups). The service was super - young lady (who'd run her own establishment before, I think) was very attentive, very friendly and genuine, and helped make the whole experience very enjoyable. This is not the first time either, as we came with my sister and husband in Mar, and it was just as good.

Maybe it was because it was midweek, or maybe it was because it was only 7pm, but my wife, daughter and I were the only ones in the restaurant which meant we got the undivided attention of the waiter. From the outside The White Hart Hotel looks impressive and once inside Squires looks expensive. It wasn’t until our attentive and friendly waiter brought over the menus and I had the courage to look at the prices that I started to relax and fully enjoy the evening and the delicious food.My wife is a very fussy diner and my daughter is a very picky vegetarian, but we all agreed that all our choices were excellent (although my sticky toffee pudding could have been a bit stickier). I stayed here last week with 3 colleagues. Staff pleasant but slow, not helped by coach party on 2 nights. A warning would have been nice & we could have eaten earlier. After waiting some time for our main courses the waitress told us we would be served after the coach party. Food okay & reasonably priced. Fresh fish was nice but battered cod looked like it had been frozen. Quality of steak was variable though cooked as requested. Puddings very sweet, impression was that the cook isn't a pudding person. Starter of sweet chilli pawns on flat bread was a pitta bread with bottled sweet chilli sauce spread on top & small chilled pre-cooked prawns on top of that with a handful of rocket to finish- not my idea of restaurant standard cooking. Collegue recommended the ham egg & chips, but as another pointed out this was home standard cooking.

The roasts were ok but the puddings were so disappointing that I don’t think we’ll be back. The server over-sold the ‘special’ which was a white chocolate bread and butter pudding. It was awful - cold (you’d have thought she might have mentioned that), a watery berry compote and no crème anglaise as promised. The second, a cheesecake was only average. The chef obviously has skills but why try to mess about with the puddings (deconstructing cheesecake and serving solid cold B&B pud) The second Butcombe pub in a row that has been a disappointment so probably best not to try another.
