Firstly, I just like to compliment the staff extremely polite, very attentive, but unfortunately the whole experience of the food was extremely underrated, ordered the scallops, devil kidneys to come out as a main the scallops arrived with a large piece of what I thought was paper/ Plastic I called The waitress over and asked what it was bless the girl she had no idea and said she would take it away, proceeded to take the peace of parchment away, however personally the entire dish should have been replaced the manager came across and explained that it was a piece of parchment that was on the dish and not harmful. The scallops were completely bland no flavour to them very disappointed, devil kidneys extremely nice however one of the kidneys had not been cored and inedible as the middle was full of veins. My husband had the fish and chips very nice again however some of the chips were hard and undercooked. When having the bill the manager had taken off the price of the appetiser which I did not expect and I’m extremely grateful for.

I will give facts as opposed to a story, as I feel this removes any emotion and gives the fairest description. Service: staff were flustered and confused at us coming when we arrived, scrambling to find out whether our table was ready. Not a good start from the front desk. Only one waiter would serve us: we were the only ones in the restaurant for the majority of the meal and yet one waiter wouldn’t look at us. We were seated next to the window into the service room and could not catch anyone’s eyes. Our waiter told us that our 20 minute wait for cocktails was due to the bar being very busy and understaffed - we had been at the bar when we arrived (the restaurant was emptying from that point onwards, not getting busier) and there were in fact more staff members than customers. The manager (or so he seemed) was very good when he appeared but left us wishing he was dealing with customers rather than his office. Furthermore, a table around us left 5 minutes into our meal and another 15 minutes in - neither table was cleared over an hour later. Just not very good. Food and drink: very good and highly recommended Rick Stein rosé. Penicillin cocktail very good but the staff had quite literally forgotten to put any cointreau in the margarita - it tasted of watery lime juice. The food was certainly edible but very underwhelming. I had the fish soup which was good but I have had genuinely better both out of French supermarkets and similarly from Michelin-star restaurants. The crab pasta was fine - edible again but so very bland. Not only that, but there was barely any crab in the dish. Very mean portion sizes too overall. Disappointing. Atmosphere: the music… what? A portable speaker playing reggae one song and a cover of Aretha Franklin the next, interspersed with EDM every so often. Just really quite odd. We were also the only people at ~9pm on a Saturday in March. Again, odd. Will most likely not make the 100 minute round trip again.

Food was excellent, apart from the caviar appetiser. The caviar was nice but the blinis were cold, dry, rubbery and tasteless .. like you would buy from Tesco. Cannot believe they weren't made to order, plus the creme fraiche and plain red onion on the side was disappointing. We had pre ordered this and they had not remembered so had to remind them. We ordered the signature cocktails but they took ages to arrive, they came way after the wine we'd chosen for the meal. I also ordered the £50 Turbot and 5 minutes later the waitress told me they'd sold out, something they should definitely be telling the customers when they are handed the menu. Service was slow and I understand they were short staffed which I get, but I felt the staff were undertrained. The mains that were brought to the table next to us came 5 minutes apart !! Everything else we ordered was excellent though, the Hake was incredible. Didn't care too much for the ambience on the first floor, it was too brightly lit and we were far too close to the other tables, there was no privacy whatsoever.

A great visit from start to finish 🤩 I can’t fault our experience yesterday, from the lovely welcoming from front of house, to our server Kate. And of course our food!!! We shared the sizzling prawns. For mains I had the Indonesian curry, my other half had the beef roast. Dessert nearly beat us so we both had an affogato… the best ice cream ! Great beers on offer, I was driving so the 0% beer went down a treat. We are just over an hour away, but will definitely be back.

Travelled across from Cardiff for 2nd visit here and well worth the journey. Arrived early but no problem for Emily at front of house who whilst we were waiting allowed my wife to sample two wines because she was undecided, a welcome surprise. Ate in comfortable surroundings at a window seat that I had requested, served by Scarlett and Connor, two young well mannered individuals with excellent communication skills. All our food was cooked to perfection and timely served although one of our side orders was late arriving and Emily very kindly gave it gratis. Would highly recommend the Hake which my wife says was perfectly cooked and delicious, my GF Cod & chips was fab, both portions were well above average for this type of establishment and worth every penny. It was a pleasure from start to finish including the modern background music, see you again soon.

We gave 4 stats but would have preferred 3.5. This was our third visit. We've noticed that prices have risen and the quality and quantity has diminished. One of us chose the rarebit which was s very small portion and quite disappointing for the price. Though tasty, the fish curry was equally diminished being composed of miniscule portions of rice and green bean salad. The amount of seafood and fish was also less than before. On the ther hand, the roast beef dish was quite tasty and abundant. The deserts were tasty and the house wines were of good quality. The table service began slow but improved over the meal.

Pre-drinks in the cocktail area lovely, and shown to smart table for four, decor and comfort great. Menu short but some nice selections, hake delicious, beef great and Indonesian curry very good - although the hake in particular was tiny, although nicely cooked and beautiful dressing. The menu could be improved by also including some clue as to the vegan and intolerance status of each of the dishes - I have seen this done well, but there was no guidance at all here - after we made our selections the helpful waitress went to check, but surely the main risks could be flagged up first before making selections? To the sides and note again that these are very small, limp. tepid, and very expensive - for instance a single carrot, julienned and with a drizzle of honey (couldn't taste it), flat on a small tea-saucer sized plate £6.95: and same for a tiny portion of cabbage. So £14 quid for a spoon of each side, enough for one person, truly crazy pricing. Desserts and nibbles were poor value - for instance there were 6 olives in the thimble- sized olive appetizer. So four of us dined: no starters, two bread/olive appetizers, four mains (not the turbot, £50!), two sides, 4 desserts, 1 beer, 1 glass Malbec and 1 Virgin Mary, £235 quid, including tip of £25. Poor value indeed.

Lovely staff and drinks, though unfortunately the food was poor - limited menu (due to lack of deliveries), our main course was served incorrectly meaning some had finished their dish before the sides had arrived. We were never asked how our experience was, or food for that matter. When the incorrect dishes were served, no visit from the manager or someone in a position of authority. Furthermore, one of the incorrect dishes served, a seafood curry, was put in front of the person who had a seafood allergy - something the restaurant were made aware of upon our arrival. For a 70th birthday meal costing £400, I am incredibly disappointed, not least because the restaurant have yet to respond to our complaint.

Felt I just had to share this - we had the most wonderful sunday lunch yesterday at Rick Stein's restaurant in Marlborough. We were a table of 4, 3 older people and myself. We were so well looked after. The food was sublime, really excellent (we had fish soup to start with) and mainly the roast beef for mains. Pudding for 2 people was delicious too. Our waiter was attentive and amazing and we stayed for hours and were not rushed out. We were given extra vegetables for the table at no extra cost. It really was the most brilliant experience. The restaurant itself is comfortable with a relaxed atmosphere. I had salt and pepper prawns to start. There were four large perfectly cooked prawns with some salad. My partner chose the devilled kidneys and said they were the best he had ever tasted. I had the Indonesian seafood curry main course which was perfectly cooked with lovely flavours. My partner had roast beef which was a good sized meal with plenty of meat which melted in the mouth. I also had the cheesecake dessert. We chose the Rick Stein Spanish white to drink which was also very good. We'll definitely come here again, probably for my partner's birthday in January!

Very pleasant, comfortable venue; nice overlooking the street and seeing what goes on there. Food was nice, but didn't seem exceptional. Found many dishes either contained flavourings I didn't want/like, or weren't mentioned and were there anyway, so I went for more 'plain' option. Soup, for example, had a touch of chilli I wasn't expecting, plus expected some langustine pieces, which weren't there -- waiter described set lunch soup as smooth, so I presumed main menu one would be more 'meaty'. We all enjoyed our food and drinks, but we weren't 'wowed', which is more expected from celebrity chef venues. Overall, nice, but a bit disappointing.

Online booking easy- for 7.30pm. Lots of warnings on texts about needing to be clearing the table by 9.15pm. Just as well they didn't enforce that as main course didn't arrive until 9.20pm. Starters were fine. Two of us had the Indonesian Fish Curry. Not a good choice. Served in a bowl, thin curry sauce with some nondescript fish and prawns floating and a curious side dish of cold haricots with grated crispy onion. Neither of us ate ours. My other friend's crab linguine apparently fine. Then I fancied the crumble and custard for pud but was firmly told that there was no custard. The chap taking the drinks order was asked by my friend about the wine but said he doesn't drink wine and couldn't help. Restaurant was not busy. I'm not surprised.

At very short notice we booked a quiet lunch for two during several days of Diamond Wedding celebrations. On arrival we found the ground floor restaurant full and really buzzing, so we appreciated the manager's initiative in having allocated us a table in a quieter area upstairs, with a glass of bubbly on the house while we perused the menu. We have eaten at Stein's (Padstow and Marlborough) on several occasions and we recognise some of the more 'constructive' comments expressed in the past by some customers. But judging by the quality and choice of the food we enjoyed today, and the efficient, friendly service delivered by the manager and team, today's 'Stein experience' was our best yet - and well worth the price. We'll be back.

Over-priced and over-cooked. Without the name I doubt it would survive. Then the service. We are not locals. Asked them to book a cab for going home the moment we arrived. They should have known then that there would be no cabs as there appear to be no companies operating in the evening. They knew this but did not tell us. Anyway they finally tell us there are no cabs after we are in to our second bottle of over-priced wine, leaving us a three mile cross country walk as we now couldn’t drive. Thanks. My wife & I visited Steins as an anniversary celebration. on arrival we were given the choice of taking a drink at the bar, outside (it was a warm dry day) or our table. We chose our table and were shown straight through. A couple of minutes later our pre ordered fizz arrived along with menus to peruse, shortly after our chosen water option was delivered to our table. when our hostess came to take our order she was very helpful clarifying some menu items we were unfamiliar with & my very rusty 50 year old schoolboy French not helping. My first choice starter Moules was not available so joined my wife with scallops, which we both enjoyed. For our mains my wife opted for the Dover sole, I went with the Lobster (a first for me) but with buttered potatoes rather than the thin cut chips & a shared Tenderstem side. Both were beautifully presented and devoured with relish. our desserts followed in a similar vein, my wife went with a lemon semi fredo, mychoice the poached spiced pear & ice cream. We finished evert last bit and with coffes to follow it was a very enjoyable meal, I'd like to give mention to 2 members of staff who left a lovely impression. Liz who when she came to our table took great care to deliver our orders in an unobtrusive way and with care to avoid spillage & cleared between courses with the same care. Also Alice who was happy to clarify menu options, was personable without being overly familiar, observant to notice a mistaken wine delivery which was corrected without fuss. the nicest touch, when she found out we were celebrating our anniversary she brought 2 chocolates on a plate with "Happy Anniversary" piped onto the plate in chocolate sauce.

Before I start I must say the waitress who was serving us was amazing and did a great job under poor conditions so she was not to blame. She was the only person serving all the tables upstairs when there was an empty bar downstairs with 2 serners there. So food was OK but not amazing, I think it's bad to send prawns up from the kids menu as a full bodied carcass to be fair when I sent them back they were peeled but it added to an already slow service. We waited on wine for the whole of the first course and into the service of the mains, again they did upgrade the choice but it was slow. I had the watermelon salad which was fine, the crab linguine was good but had some shell in it. It all just felt a bit tired and lacklustre and for the price we expected a bit more. First, let me say that Rick Stein is my all time favourite TV chef, so when I was in Marlborough, and saw there was one of his restaurants there, I cancelled my previous booking elsewhere and booked here. I could go on and on about why I was so disappointed, but ultimately, the food here was just ok. We had a halloumi appetizer - very nice and well balanced, followed by mackerel, scallops and watermelon salad as 3 starters. Mackerel was nicely cooked but the whole dish was bland, the scallops were completely tasteless - I mean completely - like nothing, and the watermelon salad was not exactly fresh - withered rocket and watery over ripe watermelon pieces. The fish curry main was very nice, but all in all, when you consider the portions are all smaller and the price is highly inflated (as you would expect), you expect the quality to be much higher. I was entirely disappointed, and would recommend 3 or 4 other restaurants in Marlborough instead. If I didn't love Rick's tv shows so much and enjoy his books, I would have marked it lower.

Side order forgotten, Toffee pudding deserts so tough textured it had to be returned, dining plates served instead of desert plates, desserts took a long time to arrive, then waiting for sugar for coffees afterwards took a while for no reason too. The place wasn’t busy at all… so unsure why the fine detail in a fine dining restaurant was forgone. Silly unnecessary errors that can happen all the time in any restaurant so nothing taken personally. Our server was lovely. Sadly, the two starters consisted of 80% lettuce with a tiny portion of cold cheese and onion tart and about four small pieces of mackerel. The fish cake main course was again served with a large portion of lettuce. I really can't remember ever seeing Rick eat any meal consisting of lettuce and there was no dressing to make it more interesting. Why not add a few fried potatoes and/or leeks in cheese sauce? The walnut tart was dry and not very sweet, not a pudding that I want to remember. The service was slow. Sorry we will not return.

I’m really sorry not to have asked their names but the lady who served us and the manager were just excellent. Food was delicious! Padstow is a special place for us after celebrating our honeymoon there (covid!) and we visited lots of Rick stein establishments, so didn’t know if this restaurant would be as special but thankfully it was just as perfect! Thank you so much to the team for making my birthday so lovely! 💫🎀

We had a lovely cosy romantic evening meal here, our server was very helpful. She chatted through the menu, there was a new item on and we were the first to order it. Very knowledgeable about the food on offer. She was attentive, yet discreet. The food was lovely, the new item was a mackeral with spice and chilli, steamed in a banana leaf and come highly recommended by me. We finished with coffee and pudding cocktails. Our entire experience was lovely, and made perfect by our server

Come on Rick - get a grip! Have you eaten here lately? Wonderful place, excellent table, lovely staff... But the food ... Tasteless undevilled kidneys, totally average and poorly-presented fish and chips, crab linguine with no perceptible crab (except a piece of shell), and the sort of dull, unimaginative puddings that my local pub does better - and all at fairly eye-watering prices. This could be a great place, but needs a refresh!

Eaten here a few times in the past restaurant out the back had a magnificent view but comes as at premium price for food and drink. This time we popped in for lunch. We only wanted a sandwich but no not possible. We asked for a hot chocolate and biscuits. We got a micro biscuit and the weakest watered down chocolate drink, and how much??? Rick i assume you and your team are reading this, really you can do much better, i cannot believe you would pedal such low standards. I guarantee I can knock something that puts this to shame with nothing but a 300 quid coffee machine and a tin of Cadbury drinking choc. Sort it out.

We have been fans of the whole Rick Stein style of cooking, presentation and have enjoyed Marlborough on many occasions on our own and with friends. On this occasion of our 53rd Wedding Anniversary , we were a little surprised to have to share the occasion with a dog under the table next to us. I did not make a fuss or complain at the time as this was a very special occasion for us. Suffice to say that we will no longer be using this establishment in the future. I find it hard to understand how you can square having animals in a restaurant and maintain Health and safety?

A warm welcome from friendly and attentive staff, followed by an excellent and good value three course set lunch for my birthday. The restaurant was buzzing with happy customers. The only downside was the shambolic car parking situation in Marlborough, with seemingly all but one of the local council's main car park meters being out of service, which was stressful and caused us to be late. Fortunately a call to Rick Stein's central booking facility ensured that our reservation remained intact while my wife and I dealt with the utterly ridiculous parking meter situation. Thank you to the Rick Stein team for an excellent lunch.. But wake up Marlborough Council, because you are probably already costing the local business community customers.

We were a table of 4 and had booked a 1pm Sunday lunch. This is the 4rth time I have been here, the ONLY reason why we returned is because our guests wanted to experience it. We sat down, all was good and lovely. We ordered 2 lobsters and 2 steaks, 3 minutes later the server came back to inform us there was no lobster. Ok not a problem. we replaced them with two specials which were another fish. She returns 3 minutes later to tell us they were also out, and so too were a few other things on the menu including the Hake, so we altered for Sole, with extra sides. Starters arrived, my mussels were very nice, but it took a further 5 minutes after a reminder for a miserly portion of bread to arrive. Then mains. The Sole was nice as were the steaks, but the sides never arrived! I then asked for some bread to have alongside by steak. The server came back 4 minutes later to tell me no, bread is reserved ONLY for the mussels. Ugh, excuse me? Are you serious I said. she said yes. By now, all reason has left me. No Lobster, Hake, Specials, missing sides and now bread! Its SUNDAY LUNCH! But, dear reader, that is not the end of it. We asked for sweetener for our coffee, 'i'm sorry we dont have sweetener'. I said, check again, you have to provide sweetener, since some guests might be diabetic! Oh look they DO have some. So for a lunch that cost £500 we were NOT happy, we had 4 things denied INCLUDING BREAD, missing sides that the server was delighted to tell us had been removed from the bill (AS THEY SHOULD BE), and sweetener unless I hadn't told the server to check again. How does this restaurant keep going - never NEVER again.

Looking to reprise an excellent evening a couple of years ago. We got half way there at least - it’s a lovely destination and the staff were, to a person, superb. However, fish and chips, surely an indicator of competence, may have been good at lunchtime, but to (barely) reheat one example some hours later was a false step. Knackered chips, grim blob of something stone-cold and greenish, and underwhelming fish in tepid batter. Staff dealt with it quickly and happily swapped in an alternative. Give them a raise and shoot the chef? (or maybe the latter is under strict orders, in which case they have my condolences) Overall fine(ish) and let’s hope for better next time.

Service is impeccable, Staff was so attentive and liked how they took our coats and welcomed us warmly! Drinks were great. The only almost negative star was the duck confit seemed overcooked (but still yummy so I still ate it haha) but the sourdough, mussels w escargot butter, glazed honey carrots and crab linguine was delicious. Would come again if I was back in Marlborough, to try other dishes!

We are devotees of Rick Stein’s TV shows so when we decided to make on overnight stop in Marlborough it was inevitable that we would choose his restaurant for dinner. We had previously eaten in his Padstow restaurant many years ago and were looking forward to another great experience. Unfortunately, despite the nice ambience, the food did not live up to our expectations. Shame.

Maybe all the negative posts recently have spurred the restaurant on to change things as our experience was nothing less 10/10. Greeted at 12 midday on the dot by fab waiting team and shown to our table. Erin who I believe our server was on Saturday 16th was attentive, knowledgeable and warm. Carafe of french sauvignon blanc was selected which was really enjoyable, far less acidic than a NZ and really nice, We chose the chorizo croquetas to share for a light starter, they were delish. Punchy paprika flavour in a crisp crumb. I could have eaten 10 to myself. We both chose hake for mains and opted to have the extra soy & mirin glazed hispi. It was all cooked perfectly, tasted amazing and if that was my last ever meal I'd be happy. Birthday boy wanted a dessert so the passionfruit creme brulee was chosen, and wow again absolutely delicious. Thanks for a fab lunch, we will be back soon.

Excellent service and very helpful staff. Devilled Kidney starter is fantastic. I had the fish and chips - mushy peas were a bit too puréed for me but that's just me. My wife had a crab - I think - pasta that was a bit too salty for her liking. Reasonable value for money. All in all a nice experience not to be missed.

Our meal and experience this time was disappointing. On arrival we were told there was no gluten free menu available anymore. We waited seated at our table for well over ten minutes before being asked what drinks we would like. When the drinks did arrive one was missing, resulting in another wait. One of our party wanted mussels but told they didn't have any. Very surprising considering its a seafood restaurant. Our waitress was all over the place and distracted for most of the time. When our food arrived it was sub- standard, with one meal only just warm and another persons meal rubbery and almost inedible. We felt the whole experience a let down especially as we were celebrating a special family occasion.

We visited on a very wet lunch hour in mid Feb which might have swayed the ratings. I have visited the restaurant before, shortly after its initial opening. Further I have visited others too in the usual places. Given Marlborough is in the most charming of locations I always want it to be good. Further given £££ prices I expect standards to be high. Mostly they were. Given that it was a business lunch, and wanted to share a great experience with a client it was an obvious choice; in what is quite an undercatered area for foodies. Food was good, but not great. Some dishes were not tip top at the point of service. A sign to me of a stretched kitchen. The restaurant as a whole was quiet, hence probably not a full kitchen staff. Note: Good at Rick Stein'd is still great anywhere else. All fish dishes were superb. The curries incredible. But to nit pick: 1 Welsh Rarebit was 'cold' on arrival, that 'yum' moment had passed. :( 2 Chips were not uniform, and one of our group only had scraps (small chips) :( 3 Tabasco Sauce was served with Oysters. The bottle EMPTY. Unforgivable in my opinion. Oysters are a luxury in the UK and to be served with the dregs of a bottle made the dish looks bad. A small but significant ooopsie at a fine dining establishment :( Service was good but not great. Not all staff knew what they were doing, that is ok but after training will improve. This is just a fact, but in a busy restaurant would have been a problem. ( Atmosphere: We made our own, a private party. Point lost as really the restaurant was basically empty meaning others were not enjoying what is one of the gems of Marlborough. Summary. Rock Star treatment ( restaurant pretty much to ourselves) Excellent food, and service, but not quite brilliant. PS If you visit, and I recommend that you do. Park in the long stay for four hours. There is a walkway via Waitrose to the high street. The five minutes walk each way will do you good, and remove car park anxiety which most of our diners had. 2 HR parking is tight for a fine dining experience that is to be enjoyed.

We were looked after well and always with a smile, but it took almost 3 hours to have 2 courses and a coffee. The fish was cooked to perfection but everything was swimming in butter - 3 tablespoons left in the little bowl of potatoes. Overall the experience was underwhelming, it felt like both the kitchen and dining room were very understaffed and run ragged. Disappointing after such wonderful meals in other Rick Stein restaurants.

Having a set menu lunch yesterday with a group us that had been booked well in advance our experience was more than disappointing. It took a while for someone to even take our drinks order and then an hour and a half for them to arrive. Still waiting for our starter we were worried about our car parking. Some of us had to move our cars and some had appointments and some starters didn’t even arrive. We eventually got fed after a long long while. We were there over 3and half hours and some left with out having anything !

Met friends from Hampshire here yesterday who we hadn't seen for over a year, we also travelled from Herefordshire. My husband and I ordered drinks on arrival (a beer and a red wine), we hadn't set a tab up and paid for these separately as our friends hadn't arrived at this point. The beer was warm and was exchanged for another bottled beer. I ordered a goan vegetable curry which was awful and very small and it came out long before my rice arrived I had about a 10 minute wait. Our friends and my husband's meals got cold waiting and I carried on eating just the curry in the end. We complained to the waitress who we had to go and find. We were then offered an apology from the Manager who said she would give me a complimentary drink for the wait and said it was a bit of an issue getting food upstairs all at once!. When the final bill arrived they charged us for the red wine and beer that I paid for separately on arrival at the restaurant. In the end we asked for the hefty service charge to be taken off. Overall everyone's food in the party was pretty average (not worth the money) and I feel embarrassed for our friends as I suggested we meet here as we used to go to Rick Stein Winchester when we lived in Hampshire and never had a complaint there.

Went for the set lunch at £17.50 for three courses. Extremely good value for food that was very well cooked and tasty. Only small gripe was that the poached plums with French toast was not hotter than it was, otherwise a very enjoyable meal. Service was friendly and efficient. I do wish that 12.5% service charge was not added to the bill as standard though as I like to make my own mind up according to my experience.
