You would expect a restaurant with Rick Stein's name attached to have a great fish stock going, but my fish and shellfish soup was appalling, utterly tasteless, just red hot water. I had to send it back. Overpriced and underwhelming with none of Rick's culinary ethos.

Over-priced and over-cooked. Without the name I doubt it would survive. Then the service. We are not locals. Asked them to book a cab for going home the moment we arrived. They should have known then that there would be no cabs as there appear to be no companies operating in the evening. They knew this but did not tell us. Anyway they finally tell us there are no cabs after we are in to our second bottle of over-priced wine, leaving us a three mile cross country walk as we now couldn’t drive. Thanks. We’d already done a 10 mile walk earlier in the day and we’re pretty knackered. Not happy.

A very welcoming and friendly restaurant with a wonderful atmosphere. The food was first class. The subtle attention and warmth of the staff was just as you would wish for. I had the halloumi (again) followed by the Indonesian seafood curry accompanied with the South African Chenin Blanc. I also had out little dog Hattie with me. Very enjoyable and relaxing afternoon lunch.

My wife & I visited Steins as an anniversary celebration. on arrival we were given the choice of taking a drink at the bar, outside (it was a warm dry day) or our table. We chose our table and were shown straight through. A couple of minutes later our pre ordered fizz arrived along with menus to peruse, shortly after our chosen water option was delivered to our table. when our hostess came to take our order she was very helpful clarifying some menu items we were unfamiliar with & my very rusty 50 year old schoolboy French not helping. My first choice starter Moules was not available so joined my wife with scallops, which we both enjoyed. For our mains my wife opted for the Dover sole, I went with the Lobster (a first for me) but with buttered potatoes rather than the thin cut chips & a shared Tenderstem side. Both were beautifully presented and devoured with relish. our desserts followed in a similar vein, my wife went with a lemon semi fredo, mychoice the poached spiced pear & ice cream. We finished evert last bit and with coffes to follow it was a very enjoyable meal, I'd like to give mention to 2 members of staff who left a lovely impression. Liz who when she came to our table took great care to deliver our orders in an unobtrusive way and with care to avoid spillage & cleared between courses with the same care. Also Alice who was happy to clarify menu options, was personable without being overly familiar, observant to notice a mistaken wine delivery which was corrected without fuss. the nicest touch, when she found out we were celebrating our anniversary she brought 2 chocolates on a plate with "Happy Anniversary" piped onto the plate in chocolate sauce.

Had set price lunch £28.50 ,which seems to have gone up significantly recently, which for the price wasn't really as good as I expected. Small portions, 4 potatoes as a side, a glass of wine £10 and fairly average food. If I had paid 60 percent of the bill I would have thought it reasonable.

Came here for a big family celebration and booked a private area with a min spend of £1k. Before I start I must say the waitress who was serving us was amazing and did a great job under poor conditions so she was not to blame. She was the only person serving all the tables upstairs when there was an empty bar downstairs with 2 serners there. So food was OK but not amazing, I think it's bad to send prawns up from the kids menu as a full bodied carcass to be fair when I sent them back they were peeled but it added to an already slow service. We waited on wine for the whole of the first course and into the service of the mains, again they did upgrade the choice but it was slow. I had the watermelon salad which was fine, the crab linguine was good but had some shell in it. It all just felt a bit tired and lacklustre and for the price we expected a bit more. I wouldn't rush back.

First, let me say that Rick Stein is my all time favourite TV chef, so when I was in Marlborough, and saw there was one of his restaurants there, I cancelled my previous booking elsewhere and booked here. I could go on and on about why I was so disappointed, but ultimately, the food here was just ok. We had a halloumi appetizer - very nice and well balanced, followed by mackerel, scallops and watermelon salad as 3 starters. Mackerel was nicely cooked but the whole dish was bland, the scallops were completely tasteless - I mean completely - like nothing, and the watermelon salad was not exactly fresh - withered rocket and watery over ripe watermelon pieces. The fish curry main was very nice, but all in all, when you consider the portions are all smaller and the price is highly inflated (as you would expect), you expect the quality to be much higher. I was entirely disappointed, and would recommend 3 or 4 other restaurants in Marlborough instead. If I didn't love Rick's tv shows so much and enjoy his books, I would have marked it lower.

Pleasure of going on Sunday for lunch. Lovely warm reception. Impeccable quality food, friendly staff. However as a Michelin star restaurants tiny details missed felt a little underwhelming. Side order forgotten, Toffee pudding deserts so tough textured it had to be returned, dining plates served instead of desert plates, desserts took a long time to arrive, then waiting for sugar for coffees afterwards took a while for no reason too. The place wasn’t busy at all… so unsure why the fine detail in a fine dining restaurant was forgone. Silly unnecessary errors that can happen all the time in any restaurant so nothing taken personally. Our server was lovely. But as mentioned, this isn’t just any restaurant, so small things slightly tarnishing that experience. Otherwise lovely x

The set menu at Rick Stein's today was a let down and the restaurant was cold with no heating. Sadly, the two starters consisted of 80% lettuce with a tiny portion of cold cheese and onion tart and about four small pieces of mackerel. The fish cake main course was again served with a large portion of lettuce. I really can't remember ever seeing Rick eat any meal consisting of lettuce and there was no dressing to make it more interesting. Why not add a few fried potatoes and/or leeks in cheese sauce? The walnut tart was dry and not very sweet, not a pudding that I want to remember. The service was slow. Sorry we will not return.

Tasteless undevilled kidneys, totally average and poorly-presented fish and chips, crab linguine with no perceptible crab (except a piece of shell), and the sort of dull, unimaginative puddings that my local pub does better - and all at fairly eye-watering prices. A warm welcome from friendly and attentive staff, followed by an excellent and good value three course set lunch for my birthday. The restaurant was buzzing with happy customers. The only downside was the shambolic car parking situation in Marlborough, with seemingly all but one of the local council's main car park meters being out of service, which was stressful and caused us to be late. Fortunately a call to Rick Stein's central booking facility ensured that our reservation remained intact while my wife and I dealt with the utterly ridiculous parking meter situation. Thank you to the Rick Stein team for an excellent lunch.. But wake up Marlborough Council, because you are probably already costing the local business community customers.

We were a table of 4 and had booked a 1pm Sunday lunch. This is the 4rth time I have been here, the ONLY reason why we returned is because our guests wanted to experience it. We sat down, all was good and lovely. We ordered 2 lobsters and 2 steaks, 3 minutes later the server came back to inform us there was no lobster. Ok not a problem. we replaced them with two specials which were another fish. She returns 3 minutes later to tell us they were also out, and so too were a few other things on the menu including the Hake, so we altered for Sole, with extra sides. Starters arrived, my mussels were very nice, but it took a further 5 minutes after a reminder for a miserly portion of bread to arrive. Then mains. The Sole was nice as were the steaks, but the sides never arrived! I then asked for some bread to have alongside by steak. The server came back 4 minutes later to tell me no, bread is reserved ONLY for the mussels. Ugh, excuse me? Are you serious I said. she said yes. By now, all reason has left me. No Lobster, Hake, Specials, missing sides and now bread! Its SUNDAY LUNCH! But, dear reader, that is not the end of it. We asked for sweetener for our coffee, 'i'm sorry we dont have sweetener'. I said, check again, you have to provide sweetener, since some guests might be diabetic! Oh look they DO have some. So for a lunch that cost £500 we were NOT happy, we had 4 things denied INCLUDING BREAD, missing sides that the server was delighted to tell us had been removed from the bill (AS THEY SHOULD BE), and sweetener unless I hadn't told the server to check again. How does this restaurant keep going - never NEVER again.

Looking to reprise an excellent evening a couple of years ago. We got half way there at least - it’s a lovely destination and the staff were, to a person, superb. However, fish and chips, surely an indicator of competence, may have been good at lunchtime, but to (barely) reheat one example some hours later was a false step. Knackered chips, grim blob of something stone-cold and greenish, and underwhelming fish in tepid batter. Staff dealt with it quickly and happily swapped in an alternative. Give them a raise and shoot the chef? (or maybe the latter is under strict orders, in which case they have my condolences) Overall fine(ish) and let’s hope for better next time.

Maybe all the negative posts recently have spurred the restaurant on to change things as our experience was nothing less 10/10. Greeted at 12 midday on the dot by fab waiting team and shown to our table. Erin who I believe our server was on Saturday 16th was attentive, knowledgeable and warm. Carafe of french sauvignon blanc was selected which was really enjoyable, far less acidic than a NZ and really nice, We chose the chorizo croquetas to share for a light starter, they were delish. Punchy paprika flavour in a crisp crumb. I could have eaten 10 to myself. We both chose hake for mains and opted to have the extra soy & mirin glazed hispi. It was all cooked perfectly, tasted amazing and if that was my last ever meal I'd be happy. Birthday boy wanted a dessert so the passionfruit creme brulee was chosen, and wow again absolutely delicious. Thanks for a fab lunch, we will be back soon.

We waited seated at our table for well over ten minutes before being asked what drinks we would like. When the drinks did arrive one was missing, resulting in another wait. One of our party wanted mussels but told they didn't have any. Very surprising considering its a seafood restaurant. Our waitress was all over the place and distracted for most of the time. When our food arrived it was sub- standard, with one meal only just warm and another persons meal rubbery and almost inedible. We visited on a very wet lunch hour in mid Feb which might have swayed the ratings. I have visited the restaurant before, shortly after its initial opening. Further I have visited others too in the usual places. Given Marlborough is in the most charming of locations I always want it to be good. Further given £££ prices I expect standards to be high. Mostly they were. Given that it was a business lunch, and wanted to share a great experience with a client it was an obvious choice; in what is quite an undercatered area for foodies. Food was good, but not great. Some dishes were not tip top at the point of service. A sign to me of a stretched kitchen. The restaurant as a whole was quiet, hence probably not a full kitchen staff. Note: Good at Rick Stein'd is still great anywhere else. All fish dishes were superb. The curries incredible. But to nit pick: 1 Welsh Rarebit was 'cold' on arrival, that 'yum' moment had passed. :( 2 Chips were not uniform, and one of our group only had scraps (small chips) :( 3 Tabasco Sauce was served with Oysters. The bottle EMPTY. Unforgivable in my opinion. Oysters are a luxury in the UK and to be served with the dregs of a bottle made the dish looks bad. A small but significant ooopsie at a fine dining establishment :( Service was good but not great. Not all staff knew what they were doing, that is ok but after training will improve. This is just a fact, but in a busy restaurant would have been a problem. ( Atmosphere: We made our own, a private party. Point lost as really the restaurant was basically empty meaning others were not enjoying what is one of the gems of Marlborough. Summary. Rock Star treatment ( restaurant pretty much to ourselves) Excellent food, and service, but not quite brilliant. PS If you visit, and I recommend that you do. Park in the long stay for four hours. There is a walkway via Waitrose to the high street. The five minutes walk each way will do you good, and remove car park anxiety which most of our diners had. 2 HR parking is tight for a fine dining experience that is to be enjoyed.

Met friends from Hampshire here yesterday who we hadn't seen for over a year, we also travelled from Herefordshire. My husband and I ordered drinks on arrival (a beer and a red wine), we hadn't set a tab up and paid for these separately as our friends hadn't arrived at this point. The beer was warm and was exchanged for another bottled beer. I ordered a goan vegetable curry which was awful and very small and it came out long before my rice arrived I had about a 10 minute wait. Our friends and my husband's meals got cold waiting and I carried on eating just the curry in the end. We complained to the waitress who we had to go and find. We were then offered an apology from the Manager who said she would give me a complimentary drink for the wait and said it was a bit of an issue getting food upstairs all at once!. When the final bill arrived they charged us for the red wine and beer that I paid for separately on arrival at the restaurant. In the end we asked for the hefty service charge to be taken off. Overall everyone's food in the party was pretty average (not worth the money) and I feel embarrassed for our friends as I suggested we meet here as we used to go to Rick Stein Winchester when we lived in Hampshire and never had a complaint there.

We enjoyed our lunch. Beautiful decor, great service, nice wine & tasty food. Small portions & simple plates, but tasted good. Can keep the cost down by having a set menu if you want.

Visited for lunch at 2pm Friday 12th Jan. Greeted by Bea, who was courteous and helpful. Lovely decor throughout restaurant. I dined on the ground floor. Had the three course charity lunch menu which was wonderful quality and for a good cause (the Jubilee Centre). I especially enjoyed the Clementine Cake. A minor point is lack of dressing for the salad with the main. I couldn’t notice any on my salad but perhaps you had to ask for some. Although my preferred wine (Brunito Rossi Toscana) wasn’t available (it hadn’t been delivered that morning), I had the Spanish red (suggested by Bea) which was very good and a nice accompaniment with my meal. Throughout my meal, I was served by Bea, and her colleague Jana, both of whom are a credit to the restaurant, offering excellent, personable and professional service. What’s also decent, is that there is space between tables so you are not overly near to other diners. Also, that 100% of the 12.5% discretionary tip is shared between staff 👌🏻 Thank you. See you again Sunday 14th Jan 😊

All rather disappointing. Travelled some distance to enjoy their signature dish of lobster and fries to be told on arrival, after having sat down to order, that they didn’t have any that day. Had to remind them about our ‘waiting on arrival’ pre ordered drinks. The food we did have was good standard fish and chips but not anything special. Not planning to hurry back. Better options are available.

First problem, I had booked several weeks in advance for lunch with an old friend who has recently lost her husband. I asked for a corner table if possible just for a little more privacy (downstairs as it has more ambience than upstairs) & discovered they knew nothing about the request at all. Not that they could accommodate the request, just didnt know; why? Anyway, we were then offered a table upstairs but I didn't really want to eat up there so we sat at the table in the middle (for context, we had met up there this spring & had had another disappointing lunch but having tried a truly dreadful pub in Hungerford in the summer we decided to give Rick Steins another go in our autumn get together). We had the set lunch, two courses, and 1/2 litre of a very good house white (at £20). The meal started off well with a delicious bowl of moules marinier each but both were shocked at the meanness of not giving a chunk of bread with it without charging extra. We then had one of the worst curries we've ever had. Not even a self respecting low end Indian restaurant would produce this. In the past (we've been coming for some years for lunch, as Marlborough is halfway between the two of us) we used to get a lovely little fish curry with rice & a bit of naan bread & pickle but this time we got a chick pea curry which looked like dog food on the plate, no presentation at all, and a small bowl of rice. The curry was so bitter my friend sent it back & got a crab linguine for no extra charge & I wish I had done the same. We both left very disappointed indeed & wondering if we'll ever eat there again...well, certainly not a set lunch; is it designed to put you off ordering it? The staff were lovely but seemed overwhelmed & we did mention our disappointment to the young woman who served us & she was very pleasant & said she would tell the chef. Will it make a difference? We may find out if we ever come again...

Disappointing food. The Welsh rarebit was burnt and the smoked salmon and mackerel fillets would have benefitted from being served with sourdough or something similar. The fish and chips was at best average. Our first two choices of white wine were apparently sold out. Our waitress was however lovely. But not the special experience we had expected. Average at best.

Chain restaurants are rarely up much and this is no exception. The premises are pleasant, the staff are smiley, but the food is poor, and expensive for what it is. Most corner cafes could produce something more appetising at half the price. The Welsh rarebit was barely edible, toast burnt, cheese and salad over salted. Salmon fish cakes were not at all nice, had a funny flavour and very hard crust. We would have complained, but we didn't want to upset our friends. Pasta dishes were unremarkable. The huge round table was unsuitable for 4 and made conversation difficult. A 12.5% service charge is added.

We have visited a few times previously, my husband and I were treating ourselves to a night out. My husband ordered deep fried coconut prawns for his starter, they arrived and were tasteless and at £16 for 5 small prawns completely overpriced. His Indonesian sea food curry as his main arrived and was also disappointing, the green bean and grated coconut salad tasted off with a strong pungent smell. The waitress removed it but it wasn’t replaced. On a Sunday evening there is a feeling of young inexperienced staff and wanting to close early. The manageress did come to speak to us and she she did remove the starter from our bill but she was clearly not fussed by what we had to say. We had high expectations but on this occasion it was sadly not met

Absolutely wonderful dining experience. The food was delicious. The staff were amazing. The staff took time of their busy schedules (Monday and restaurant was packed) soto chat a few minutes with customers to make sure all was right and that they were comfortable. The restaurant is built over two floors in a grade listed building which makes it quaint and interesting. So the three rooms are not crowded. The food was excellent well cooked and the staff were very knowledgeable about the dishes they served. The lobster and the chowder were amazing. There is a shop too where you can buy some souvenirs too can’t wait to go there again.

We reserved for a special occasion and we were not disappointed. Impeccable friendly service from start to finish. Fish cooked to perfection. Lovely chilled oysters, plump juicy mussels . The Rick Stein blanc de blanc champagne is delightful. The Rick Stein Spanish red was a right little find. A great way to celebrate our anniversary and a nice gesture from the restaurant to acknowledge our 40 years . Great location and most enjoyable

We have been loyal customers of Rick Stein in Marlborough since they opened in 2016 and, with one exception, we always had a very enjoyable experience on each visit. Our last visit some two months ago, surprisingly, was disappointing and I told them so. The restaurant manager, Ms Kasia Hunter, contacted me apologised and invited us back. We decided to hold an important family wedding anniversary there today. We were welcomed by Ms Hunter, the quality of the food was excellent and Ms Hunter ensured that every aspect of our visit went like clockwork. The service was first class and the servers, near identical sisters (I thought I was seeing double at one point😳!), Maggie and Alice, were very friendly, helpful, efficient and professional. I am delighted to say that based on today’s performance, Rick Stein, Marlborough, is back to its excellent best!

Came here as a birthday surprise dinner, and absolutely loved it. Service was authentic, friendly and unobtrusive. I had oysters to start (separated from the shell but served in the shell) which were plump and juicy. The crab linguine was garlicky, with sweet fresh crab pieces, and the linguine was cooked perfectly. The apple tarte tatin was soft and crispy all at the same time. My partner had sourdough and olives which were delicious, followed by fish and chips with light and airy batter. For dessert, he had the sticky toffee pudding, which was rich and decadent. They also surprised me with a plate of fudge and brownies for my birthday. Overall, a fab dinner

We enjoyed our outing but didn't feel we got the overall wow factor like we've had on our visits to the Seafood restaurant or the Cafe in Padstow. The front of house staff, whilst kind and attentive (when other customers permitted!), weren't necessarily as fully trained as we have become to expect from the Rick Stein brand when they are working on the floor. One of our starters didn't arrive complete, but unfortunately, the kitchen nor the server noticed. Overall, it was a pleasant afternoon, but we were hoping for more.

When we're seated, we were asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. I asked for still (wanting tap water) and a bottle arrived. This costs £4.95, but as 12.5% service charge is added £5.57 just for water. Starters were OK, but cheap tomatoes rather than widely available vine tomatoes came with the burrata. I'd had my starter before all the drinks we ordered on arrival had arrived. The battered mackerel was excellent, I am surprised that more restaurants don't serve this. Service was variable, but one young waitress went out of her way to be helpful.
