We booked here as a Birthday Meal and pre warned when booking that in the party we had a Gluten Free Allergy requirement. When booking in at the Restaurant we asked for a Gluten Free Menu. Our order was taken and within the 5 for £20 starters requested 2 lots of GF Garlic Bread. When the starters came out all were on one platter and not separated and after a couple of minutes waiting requested plates to be able to eat/share the food and at this point was told 'by the way the Garlic Bread is not Gluten Free, we didn't have any'. Thankfully my son had not started to eat!!! We then asked for the Food to be taken away and was brought back 10 minutes later as 2 no Gluten Free Buns toasted with Garlic Butter. The main meal of a Burger and Chips came out with the same bun, which was not eaten as already had enough...... Safe to say the 10% added service fee we took off. Very disappointed.

Stopped by for a meal and a drink while walking the dogs. Nice outside garden area but besides that it was very disappointing. Ordered a roast pork which arrived on a bed of shredded cabbage, undercooked parsnips and NO roast potatoes or crackling. Called the waiter over who scuttled off and returned with 4 roast potatoes about 10 minutes later. And no crackling. £19.50 for a seriously pathetic attempt at a Sunday roast. The young lady serving drinks at the bar definitely got out of the wrong side of the bed and needs a crash course on front of house do’s and don’t s . The shouting and swearing ftt rt I’m the kitchen was similar to a Gordon Ramsay TV show, except the service and quality was lacking. As a regular customer to The Royal Oak it is with huge disappointment that l write this review and won’t be returning in a hurry.

We came for a nice evening meal but were very disappointed with the food. My mum's risotto seemed to have been microwaved, the mushrooms were slimy and did not seem very fresh at all. My double cheese burger was a joke, I have never paid so much money for such low quality food. The basic presentation was terrible, the meat was so over cooked it was dry as anything, the bun was like the super cheap ones you get 10 for 1£ in Aldi, the "relish" consisted of one piece of rancid onion. Honestly can't put into words how poor quality the food was. I had to go to McDonalds on the way home, even their junk food was A LOT better quality than the Royal Oak. There is really no excuse for such poor quality as we were the pretty much the only customers. There is no way that food was prepared by a 'chef', well not one with any self respect anyway. Such as shame as it could be a great pub. I wouldn't mind if it was cheap and poor but expensive and poor is not acceptable.

What a fabulous pub. We met as a family. The Sunday lunch was perfect, we all had something different and everything was so tasty and well cooked. Best of all, we were not hurried off our table and had time to relax and chat. The little village is lovely to walk round too. Perfect

Our large party of thirteen was exceptionally served and catered for recently at The Royal Oak. The service was friendly and timely, and the food was just brilliant. There is a lot of choice on the menu, and the pub also has a large choice of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. This was not the first time we visited, and we will certainly be going back again and again.

This is the first time I have visited under the new management and I am not impressed, the table where we sat had something fairly large squashed on the dado rail, the seats need some padding as they are worn with no support, the service was quite good until we got to the sweet, a scoop of ice cream is not the same as a mini carton!! I had a vanilla cheese cake, it had never seen vanilla or cheese, it was just an aeriated cream on some crushed digestive biscuits. We had Sunday lunch, the roast beef had a great layer of fat through the centre of each piece and either the knives need sharpening or it was not a great bit of beef, quite disappointing and certainly not worth the increased cost, safe to say we will not be visiting again

I attended a Work Summer Event event at The Royal Oak on a hot June afternoon that continued into the evening. The setting couldn't have been better and the beer garden was perfect for the occasion. The Royal Oak really pulled out all the stops. The food was excellent - top class and lots of choice. Service from the staff was exceptional - nothing was too much trouble to ensure that we all had a great time. I would recommend the Royal Oak to anyone looking to organise a corporate event and expecting a high-level of professional service.

Absolutely amazing venue. The Royal Oak is a very welcoming, beautiful beer garden, wonderful friendly staff. Lucy, the lady in charge, has done a fantastic job. Came with family and enjoyed a variety of meals, pizza for the children, adults we chose Ribs, Fishcake and the ceaser burger. They are all undeniably amazing meals. Was a very busy evening, and we were lucky to take the last time inside that as available but also plenty of space outside in their gazebo outside restaurant, which we enjoyed drinks in after our meals. The staff were attentive and polite. We notice a lot of Gluten Free options which we think is utterly fantastic as we have a member in our family who struggle for things she can eat so to know they can do GF fish and chips, alongside a variety of Homemade GF desserts means we can bring her our and she doesn't need to fret! Will be returning! Sad I didn't take photos of the food at the time, but got a photo of the stunning cake on the bar!

We came here one very sunny afternoon, it was really peaceful, and a pleasant experience to be able to eat, chat and be able to hear yourself. Service was friendly, attentive, and helpful without being overbearing. Little bit more expensive than I thought, though a ciabatta was £8 and chips £4 which was only about 10 chips.. however, both made for a delicious lunch and a lovely treat. We didn't feel rushed either, so ordered pudding and more drinks and carried on nattering. What more do you need.!

There were over 100 guests, with many guests bringing their families as well. The event was well planned, the food served was top quality, the drinks flowed, the service was excellent, the staff attentive to everyone's needs, and the garden and atmosphere was truly fantastic. We visited for lunch last Saturday , a late booking for a large group to celebrate my sisters birthday. I had lived in the area over 15 years ago and it was always my go to if I wanted good quality home cooked pub grub. After all this time the place is still great. From the communications prior to us arriving with arranging some birthday touches , answering my questions about their offerings for coeliacs and vegans to the service and the excellent quality of the food, nothing could be faulted. The chef came out to discuss options with those who had special requirements and they offered to keep the pub open whilst we finished our food for the birthday celebrations. 100% be visiting again when next down in the area to see family. Lunch was a very good pub lunch, crunchy veg done just right, and service excellent. I wish I didn't live 90 miles away! Overall, I would say...Excellent.

We regularly eat here and have never been disappointed. Recently had the steak on the rosti potato - Oh goodness. Wonderful. The owners are part of the team ensuring standards are high, they interact with regulars and welcome all guests choosing to visit here. The area is wonderful. Worth a visit after a wander through the village, walk the riverside walk and then have lunch or an evening meal. The quiz evening is to be highly recommended, its like spending an evening with friends. Highly recommended.

Our group, more than 20, booked lunches in advance and found they were delivered fairly promptly. Everyone seemed happy with their meals. The pub was well-staffed and the drinks were reasonably priced. The 'Good Old Boys' best bitter was appreciated, in particular.

Four of us went for Sunday lunch. There was a good selection to choose from on the menu plus a specials board. Three of us chose various Sunday roasts but one of our party preferred Salmon which wasn't on the menu. The waiter kindly offered to ask if it was possible and it was. They provided a nice meal of salmon, new potatoes and veg - how obliging can that be? So if you don't see what you want it may be worth asking. The service was prompt and the food well presented and good temperature. The surroundings were traditional and there was a lovely log fire. A very pleasant Sunday lunchtime, thoroughly recommended.

Four of us went for dinner 3 nights ago. Three of us ordered Red Thai Beef Curry and the third Pheasant Madras. We were disappointed with the Red Thai to say the least. Having eaten Red Thai curry in several different Thai restaurants and cooked it myself I can honestly say this was a very different experience. The beef came in large lumps which was obviously previously cooked and warmed up. I had expected thin strips of beef freshly cooked. If there is one thing I absolutely hate it's reheated meat. Honestly how long does it take to flash fry a few thin strips of rump steak?! The red sauce was brown. No lemon grass just 4 pieces overcooked French bean and a sliced up red chilli was floating in the dark brown sauce. Strangely it was exactly the same colour and texture as the pheasant Madras in which the pheasant tasted very similar to beef. The prawn crackers which came with the Red Thai were just dropped on the side of the plate which meant they were getting very soggy in the sauce! And the fragrant sticky rice? (Not advertised but expected) was ordinary long grain rice. Really! If you're going to do curry then get it right!!! To be honest we didn't go for a curry but seeing it on the board fancied it straight away. Will we never learn! The Toffee Lumpy Bumpy cake which we ordered to take the taste away and cheer ourselves up? It was a unidentifiable mixture of sponge and a mousse like substance covered with what tasted like fondant icing, pale cream in colour and once swallowed lay like a piece of lead in your stomach. Toffee? I didn't taste any. The ice cream on the side was like half a scoop! We did not complain - same old story - we took guests and didn't want to embarrass them but instead we shall vote with our feet. Next time we fancy a curry we shall go where they know how to cook it. Get your act together Royal Oak - there's too much competition out there to risk giving your customers second best!

Arrive very early for an appointment so decided to stop in for a bite to eat. Internally the Royal Oak is a well kept country pub with nice chunky furniture. Clean and tidy. The free Wi-Fi signal is fantastic. I did struggle to find quick lunch food on the menu with the sandwich selection being quite small and salads limited. If I was eating out for an evening meal it would have been great though. The food arrived promptly and was rather tasty. I had the hot chicken and bacon sandwich with a side of chips. The tea was a rather nice cuppa too. The only downside is they did not tell me when I ordered my food they were shutting in an hour which was not enough time to get stuck into some work I only found out 5 mins after they actually shut at 2.30 when the light went off and I tried to order more tea. Nice friendly staff with a smile and good service.

Called in for lunch on a Monday, quiet, good welcome, good drinks. Had a ciabatta sandwich, all very nice. Full menu looked good, but we were only after a quick lunch stop. Recommend.

Very friendly landlord and the staff; the atmosphere welcoming. Always good for a drink and a snack. However, if you are looking for a tasty meal, you may find it slightly disappointing. Basic 'pub grab' on the menu rather than mouth watering dishes . Also, the quality of the food is just OK. Shame, as it used to be delicious when the current landlord took it over ...

Visited here for our customary “breakfast Friday” Came here 7 years ago when Pork Pie Sam Aldridge failed the Belly Gut Buster!!! I won’t lie! On that occasion the portion was big but the quality was poor. However this time, I can honestly say it’s one of the best breakfast we’ve ever had!!!! Everything was bang on and we were extremely happy with the offering. Had same great food ( fried bread was on point ) the staff were great and and we were full up like a tin can of crackers after. The apprentice Harvey was so impressed he tried to eat his fingers. And Bald Les took a shine to the lady behind the Eastern European Grol working the till All in All we had a great time, and next time we need a breakfast, some oil, and a hub cap we will be sure to pop in. Cheers and All The Best 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

We looked on Tripadvisor when travelling nearby and did a quick detour for lunch and are so glad we did! We (humans and a dog!) received a very warm welcome. I had the rainbow trout and I can honestly say it was the nicest meal I’ve had in a long time, my husband also very much enjoyed his steak pie. It made his day when he realised the fruit crumble was rhubarb as that’s always been his absolute fave! If in the area again we would definitely return!

Looks and feels like a pub, with comfy seating and fireplace, but the food was amazing and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Had a great meal here.

On a chilly early spring day - after buying onion sets and seed potatoes in this high quality family-run garden centre - we had an early lunch in their warm conservatory café: delicious soup, bread and particularly outstandingly yummy - and large! - cheese scones - all home made. The cheese scones are by far the best in a 10 mile radius of Romsey! The garden centre is also known locally for the wide collection of high quality dahlia plants.
