We had our Wedding Reception at Berties this February. And I would like to leave some feedback. The management allowed us to decorate the room the day before. They were very helpful and helped with some good ideas too. The room was sparkling clean, and by the time we finished it looked absolutely perfect. Sorting out music was also very easy, since they have Sonos system which allowed us to stream all our music to just our main room.On The day, we started arriving after 3pm. The restaurant was closed at that time, so we had the whole place just for us until later on. There was plenty of parking space left so that most of the guests could park right behind the place. Once inside the restaurant, everyone was offered a glass of sparkling and showed their seat. Waiting staff was very forthcoming, and performed exceptionally. The food was amazing and very well timed, big thanks to the Chef & Co.So to wrap it up I just want to say that they did not let us down in any way, and made our day the most special and unforgettable. Thank you very much!Regards, Mr. & Mrs.

We held my mothers 90th birthday in the private room at Bertie's. They were very helpful with regard to planning the event. The food was excellent as were the staff who helped us set-up the room beforehand. Would go again (mothers favourite restaurant anyway) and would certainly recommend this for private parties. Berties made what could have been a stressful event for the organiser (me) into something that was a great success.

The restaurant used to be a pub but has been renovated to a very high standard very clean and tidy.No loud music, tables spaced so that you are not all on top of one another and can have a private conversation. The menus are not large but are regularly changed with a good choice, plus fresh vegetables. All food is freshly cooked and served on warmed plates and the service is very good. The food is not piled on your plates and presentation is great. Food is served hot and is well cooked very tasty both my husband and myself really enjoyed what we had. The soup was great together with the main course very filling but I still found room for my pud for which there is a great choice. This is the second time I have eaten in there and I would still recommend the restaurant as both times service and the quality of the food was excellent.Their website I found lets them down a bit as I tried to book for Valentine's Day but it had not been up dated, the info is a bit sparse for any events that they are holding. I did book for the Saturday instead and an email was sent in return to confirm the booking.

Food was good but nothing special. Atmosphere lacked a little something. Finishing touches need some attention, e.g. white straws with red stripes doesn't exactly go with what Berties is selling itself as. Some of the staff a bit inconsistent in their approach. We ate here on a Saturday - really looked forward to it - unfortunately they had a large party in - to our cost! We were left at the bar for ages (I was just about to leave - when they called us over!) we were seated then left. Eventually we had our order taken and wine brought to the table - not poured! We poured our own wine - and as I was taking a sip my wife noticed the glass was dirty - so we asked for a replacement. Our food arrived - I had the scallops - gritty! Then the mains - my wife had the steak - she is a little fussy over fat and gristly bits - so I had a taste - it was inedible- not wanting to make a fuss and call anyone over - we waited for our plates to be removed and for our waiter to ask wether we had enjoyed our meals ( considering my wife had left nearly all of her steak) - but no questions asked! We asked for the bill - left our money on the table - got our own Coats and left - without any acknowledgement from any member of staff - appalling service and food - not even worth 1 star!

Double baked souflee was what I had but we all had different things which all were delicious. Then the main courses arrived again nice and promptly. Food was ok - nothing special - turkey with no bread sause - a bit light on cranberry - a bit dry - the bowls of veg was hot -but very ordinary - no surprises. Our route took us past Berties and curiosity got the better of us. What a wonderful find in this cosy place with ambiance, exceptional service and most of all food not to better. My partner took a scallop starter and partridge main and I, a finely sliced beef fillet bruschetta starter and marinated mandarin pork belly. Excellent! The lady claimed to only have room for a scoop of ice cream but I chose the cheese plate. I advise any one anticipating the cheese to not overfill on preceding courses. Three cheeses, grapes, celery, ample biscuits and a glass of port. What a way to end.

So this Easter I visited it, it was very easy to find and the use of a car park made it easy and cheap to park. I was greeted by a lovely man who showed me my room and to my surprise it was really well designed, clean, crisp and full of useful features and appliances. After looking around my room I visited the restaurant where I had the most amazing hake and onion sauce. It was Stunning. Finally I would recommend this hotel and restaurant to anyone who is looking for a little retreat at a rather small price. We visited Bertie's last week for an evening meal and ordered from the 'Simply September' menu, which was great value. For 2 courses it was £16.95 including a glass of wine. Relaxed, calm atmosphere with efficient service. I had the pork with Serrano ham, which had a lovely flavour and was really tender and moist. My partner had the 'special', trout in a light tempura batter, which he said was very good. The desserts, sticky apple sponge with ice-cream and the creme brulee were also enjoyable, though I would have liked just a little more ice-cream to go with this sweet and sticky sponge. We popped in for lunch yesterday at 1. There were several tables already in use and the atmosphere was good but quiet. The staff were excellent and the food and coffee all good. My salmon and dill fishcake and my husband's burger both came with triple cooked chips and salad. There was so little salad that we ordered a side dish of it too, and the 'triple cooked' chips were not very sparse, but also only 'single cooked' in my opinion. As it was the thought of the crunchy chips which really sold us the meals from the menu, we felt a little let down.

Arrived on a Friday evening without a booking but the friendly staff soon sorted out a table for us. Waited a while to place our order, but once that was done the food was placed before us at a rate of knots. They rushed us through our food/courses. Such a shame really as the main course was delicious; pork belly with a pineapple chutney. All very tasty. For dessert my husband had the Creme Brûlée, which I sampled and was delicious. Wine was good and not expensive. Mackerel Rillette was ok, but lacked some flavour. Sweetcorn an dPancetta Blinis were good, although the poached egg was not quite runny! The only negative was the hurried serving of courses.Other tables which were there before us, but eating from the A La Carte menu, were not rushed through in the same way. This is not to say we did not receive good service from the waiting staff, just that the courses came out too quickly.Overall the food was fine and the individual service good and staff friendly. The set menu was good value for money, especially as it included a glass of wine.

Have been going to Berties on and off for nigh on 20 years. Somehow seem to have neglected it recently so trotted along for a wedding anniversary meal. We were worried that we hadn't booked but needn't have been concerned as the place was customer -lite and two of the dining areas were clearly not open for business. Ordered a duck confit with pomegranate and orange salad and other half ordered some sort of smoked salmon dish. The duck was lovely but the salad was a bit disappointing as it seemed to consist of a large lettuce leaf and half a radish which had been thinly sliced. I had expected a little pomegranate crunch and can only assume that the orange and pomegranate was mashed up in the dressing as the ingredients certainly weren't in evidence on the plate. It did taste pleasant but was a little over sweet for my taste. The other half had a smoked salmon dish - he quite liked the strange object in the middle which looked (and tasted) like a very greasy pancake of sorts. For the main course I had ordered fish of the day - somewhat surprised that this was actually a salmon fishcake - which to me is something you make from leftovers. But, I love fishcakes because I can rarely be bothered to make them at home so placed an order. When the fishcake arrived it was a starter sized portion - I did't mind but someone with a big appetite would have been sorely disappointed, iT was accompanied by salad and chips - which were floating in a butter sauce. Oh, and there was a poached egg on top of the fishcake, which wasn't mentioned when I ordered the dish but I was OK with as I happen to really like poached egg. The fishcake passed muster (despite its size) and the salad was nice and fresh. But the chips...... I don't often eat chips as I regard them as a special treat but these were more of a chore than a treat and I left half of them. Put aside for one moment that the chips were sitting in a pool of butter sauce and rapidly going soggy (or - more accurately - getting soggier) - The chips had not been separated properly (a basic) and were hot but greasy - in fact slimy would be a better word to describe them. But why they were not served in a separate container is completely beyond me - and this is coming from someone from a northern background who understands that, on occasion, chips with gravy hits the spot. The waiter didn't come and ask how the meal was (which in my experience of Berties is quite unusual) so I didn't have an opportunity to point out the problem until he came to take our plates away. He did say that when we came again he would make sure that the chips were served separately but I suspect we won't be returning in a hurry. I did offer to teach the chef how to make chips but this was treated with humour - so perhaps I complained too nicely. To redress the balance - my husband really liked his lamb and his dessert was very nice - and it is always disappointing when you have high expectations (based on previous experiences) and they are not realised. Finally - can highly recommend the NZ Sauv blanc which was excellent!

We visited with my wife's brother and his wife for a lunch on a Wednesday. My wife and I ordered a 175ml glass of New Zealand sauvignon blanc (£5.75). This was a wineof moderate quality and served unchilled. We both found it very disappointing, particularly since you can at the moment buy the splendid Awatere Valley NZ sauvignon blanc for £8.95 a bottle from Majestic. Against my principles, I had to resort to asking for some ice to be added to the wine (a horrible practice from across the Atlantic). I started with pan-fried scallops (£8.50). These were OK, although it was a bit untidy that only 3 of the 4 scallops had their roe attached. Other diners were happy with their cheese souffle (£6.75) and soup (£5). For the main course two of us chose poached salmon (£10.50). This was a good piece of fish, nicely cooked and accompanied by pleasantly firm new potatoes. A main-course fishcakes and Caesar salad were also well prepared. There of us decided to end with a coffee and ordered Americanos. Bertie's does have a proper coffee machine (otherwise I would not have ordered a coffee), but we were served what was described on the bill as 'Americano filter', In other words it was filter coffee with a plain black appearance and none of the expected 'crema' (white-brown top) on the surface. I would not have ordered a coffee had I known that it would not be made in the normal way from a proper machine. The charge for three filter coffees was £8.70 (£2.90 a cup), which is pushing it a bit. We have enjoyed good meals (particularly wine-tasting dinners) at Bertie's before but were not particularly happy with our overall expeience on this occasion.

Nice restaurant, we felt as if we were going "out" rather than just getting food as you do in some places. It was worth getting dressed smartly and the overall ambience was warm and relaxing. It is not the place to go for a huge meal but certainly bigger portions than we got at the White Horse and by the time I had had had 2 courses I was satisfied. My wife and daughter had the goats cheese and I had the creamy mushroom soup all of which was good. The pork medallions in mustard was superb altho would have liked a bit more meat. My wife had the lentil and butternut squash dish which was not that great as there were too many lentils and not enough butter nut squash. We all had the lemon cheesecake and thought it divine! The house wine a glass of which was also offered as part of the three course deal tasted good and served at good temperature. Waitress was friendly and helpful and the decor inside Berties is very attractive. British/European restaurants in Romsey that are open on Monday night are not very plentiful and we picked Berties based on some recent TA reviews. The friends we were with are really into their food and wine, so were a little nervous how it would measure up - OK as it turned out and we had an enjoyable meal.Between us we covered much of the menu - recommend the fishcake and pigeon breast starters, sea bass or venison mains and blueberry panacotta or banana tarte tatin for dessert. The local cheese selection is also good - try Loosehanger White Hart (brie style) or Isle of Whight blue soft cheese. The wine list is not extensive but there is enough choice - Chilean Viognier (fruity off-dry white) went with the seafood, while a Rioja Reserva complemented the red meat.Only negatives were that the venison portions could have been a bit bigger and we had to order additional side dishes to make the main courses 'man size'.Our waitress was also new and hadn't been very well briefed on the menu - not her fault and the staff were all very helpful.Overall pretty good, with room for small improvements in a couple of areas and slightly bigger main course portions next time, please.

Their simply Berties menu is excellent both quality and value. 2 or 3 course set menu including a glass of wine. The only one thing, I'd change is the wine glasses themselves. They are small and not at all fine. I do like my wine in a proper classy large fine glass.

Brilliant meal here tonight after the matinee performance in Southampton. My partner and I enjoyed the Saturday Special (£35 for two 2 course meals with a bottle of wine if ordered before 7pm- good wine too!)We were delighted with the quality and range of choices available and even splashed out on a pudding for an extra £3 each. Good service in a pleasant atmosphere. We will be going again! Top marks!

Went to Bertie's for the set christmas menu leading up to Christmas. Good choices and excellent value for money. I guess it was because it was lunchtime but it lacked a Christmas feel. But compared to other venues in Romsey for Christmas lunch Bertie's was a good choice with the menu selection. I have eaten there before in the evening at other occasions and the food is always excellent and coupled with a very good bistro atmosphere.

Choosing Berties as a venue for a family celebration was without doubt, most definitely the right decision. David arranged a menu selection for 30 guests and we enjoyed canapés in the light and airy conservatory before sitting down to an excellent and beautifully presented lunch in the dining room, served by friendly, helpful staff. We had a memorably special day, thank you Berties and well done!

Had a lovely meal on Saturday night. Starters were particularly excellent...double baked souffle, genuinely homemade fishcakes. What was very welcome was the response of the restaurant to a request to have a vegetarian option available. Could not have been more obliging. Would definitely return. For improvement I felt occasionally the service was not as good as it could be e.g. we had to ask for water, but it did not in any way detract from the meal.

Lovely old bistro/restaurant with plenty of atmosphere. Great menu. The most divine coffee which will make you realise what horrible coffee is offered in other popular places! Charming, polite and attentive staff. Highly recommended.

It was my husbands birthday and I was thinking of where to take him for a really good meal. There are a number of restaurants in Romsey and we have been to all of them, including Berties, in the past. We have always enjoyed our visits to Berties, the service is always efficient and friendly, the atmosphere and setting could not be bettered, and most importantly the food is excellent. So it was a no brainer really and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

Recently won a competition entitling me to £25 off a meal at Berties. Not been here for a long while so I was glad to return. Went at lunchtime and it was very busy considering it was 1ish on a Thursday! I had a chicken dish with potatoes and tomato provencale - it was deelish. Hubby had a steak and he said it was very tasty and full of flavour. I also had a white choc and ginger crumb cheesecake - again deelish. Their simply berties deal is very good value which is where I ordered mine from - 2 dishes and a small wine for £14.95. Really good food, would defo recommend and go again.

We popped in on may day. There were 2 wedding lunches. In spite of this the service was incredible. We had the 2 course set lunch and I could not fault the staff service or especially the food in any way. If visiting broadlands mottisfont or the town it is a must. Well done Berties we will be eating there again

We celebrated our ruby wedding anniversary here with a meal for 40 family and friends, where we had exclusive use of their large room. The arrangements leading up to the event were easily dealt with and the service we were given was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. Our guests were really excited by the menu they could select from and were not disappointed. The food was beautifully presented, imaginative and delicious.

so there we wer saturday night at berties restauraunt in Romsey hampshire, had a few drinks at the bar (not me tho i was driving !!) but sadly just as we placed our order we were told that the scallops and the sea bass was no longer available both of which at least four of them would have ordered so I had the cheese souffle which was lovely followed by the lamb they had 5 bottles of wine between them so i doubt they will remember eating anything !!. the staff were really nice and friendly no eye rolling even though we were the last out and (they) were quite loud ...must be something to do with the wine consumption methinks).....yes its quite expensive to eat there but seeing as the wine more than made up that bill to what it came to i doubt they care.... would we go again ..oh yes for sure

We held our annual dinner at Berties last weekend. There were 38 of us which was a bit cosy - but 40 might be a realistic maximum. The function room was attractive but one or two people found it too warm - this was remedied by simply opening the window! We didn't have anyone in a wheelchair but I would suggest Berties is not 100% wheelchair friendly. The food was excellent. The menu offered some interesting dishes such as local pheasant, butternut squash and lentil wellington to more standard fare such as seared salmon, lamb neck fillets and chicken breast. Presentation of the food on the plate was very good. There was one comment that the pheasant was too dry (a common problem with pheasant) but otherwise all the feedback I received was very positive indeed. The service was also very good. We asked for an extended interval between main course and dessert but this may have upset their timings somewhat and the dessert arrived perhaps ten minutes later than was ideal. The wine list looked comprehensive but as I was driving I stuck to one bottle of rather good beer (from the local Romsey Brewery).Overall, a very good experience at Berties. The food was the highlight. If you need to organise a function for 40 or fewer people then I suggest you consider Berties. They were very helpful and responsive when I was originally organising the event which filled me with confidence - and I wasn't disappointed on the night.I imagine Berties would also be a very good place for a couple to have a conventional meal.

The venue was very crowded and although we paid a decent amount for the Xmas Meal, at the end of the evening we were rushed so that they could clear our tables and we had no where to sit. The food was ok, although a little cold but they did well to cater for a very full house. The DJ was a little dated but overall a pleasant evening.

Over the last few years, Bertie's has hosted some excellent dinners where each course was matched by a couple of wines from Heaton's wine shop in Romsey. On this occasion there was an added twist that each dish was matched by two high-quality olive oils. An expert in this field was present to speak about the oils and why he had matched them to the particular dishes. These dinners have always been priced extremely reasonably and on this occasion the charge was only £23 per head for an excellent evening in all respects. We started with Serrano ham, drizzled with a Mount Etna oil and a salad leaf accompaniment drizzled with another oil. The oils certainly added considerably to the food, but I found it difficult to compare them when combined with food. (Afterwards we had a chance to taste the oils on bread and that was a better way to learn more about the oils). The second dish was was a beatifully cooked piece of salmon, with a quinoa accompaniment. The final dish was an open pasta with breast of chicken, also minced chicken with a mustard-seed sauce. All three dishes, with the accompanying wines and oils, made for a great evening. A sad note was added when Paul Dawkins explained that he had decided to retire from the Heaton's wine shop and that this might well be the last in a series of splendid dinners that he has organised. Many thanks to him and to the Bertie's chef and his splendid creations!

Really couldn't fault the food, every course was superb. Not sure what else to add, if you're in the area and looking for a first class meal - Berties is the place. Will drop them a point for 'service' as we had to ask for sideplates to use with the bread and again for a knife with the cheese course - but it was a very busy evening. Will definitely visit again.

We went here for valentines evening. To be fair it was fairly busy as you would expect, the food was nice but the service was lacking which did put a damper on the evening. We arrived and nobody came to the table for 15-20 mins to take any initial drinks orders, when they did come to us they wanted our food order before any drinks! It looked like the waiters didn't know who was serving us as we had a different waiter every time. We had some bread, no plates were brought out for that, we had to ask. They didn't ask if we needed more drinks throughout the night until we beckoned someone over (even though our drinks were empty and we caught the eye of a few waiters.)Over all service was poor (even though waiters were stood around)They added a mandatory 10% service charge, which if it wasn't valentines I would have refused to pay (but I didn't want to cause a scene on this day), and then handed me the card machine expecting me to add even more gratuity!!! Its a real shame they couldn't get the simple things right as this let down the food which was nice. I doubt I will return.

Berties is easy to find in the centre of Romsey. However, parking is scarce so there's an NCP 5 minutes walk away.Situated on a main road in a converted house.Very cosy feel upon entry with various separate areas/rooms gives you the feel of having dinner in somebody's lounge. Some areas are bright and airy and some are small and snug.Service was warm and attentive. We were served by at least 4 people during the evening. Menu offers a wide selection of fish, steaks and comfort food.We chose Goats Cheese, Souffle and Scallops to start - took a while as the restaurant was busy (22 minutes). Nicely presented but over-cooked.Mains were better - Sea Bass, Salmon Supreme and Ribeye. Good portions but served 1 minute after we had finished our starters.Wine menu is limited.Overall, restaurant is stuck in a bit of a time-warp. However service was friendly and the food was tasty.

We have had everything from "significant" birthday dinners and simple "drop-in" lunches at Berties and never had anything but a brilliant meal. However, no matter how good the meal, the friendly staff have always been the factor that has made the event. All the staff we have met have been fabulous but if you are lucky enough to get Dulla waiting on you, you will have a tremendous time. We have even stayed overnight a couple of times and the rooms are comfortable and well presented.

Berties was the venue for our wedding meal. We had a lovely private room at the front of the restaurant, nicely decorated with great features, it was a perfect setting for our small gathering. We were made very welcome at Berties and felt very comfortable there, all of the staff were amazing and went above and beyond to look after us, nothing was too much trouble and they were great with the kids (even cheeky four year olds that go to the kitchen and ask the chef for more ice cream). The food was delicious, not one person was disappointed or had anything bad to say. Delicious vegetable soup to start, followed by Roast Beef with the amazing gravy that left you wanting more and more and finally the apple pie and ice creams. All fantastic.Good selection of drinks as well, the hot mulled cider on arrival was great, nice wines and a good selection of local ales (Flacks) behind the bar kept us happy.Berties played a big part in our special day and helped make it so, we will forever have great memories of our afternoon there. We are already planning a big family visit for Christmas but hopefully will have some visits before then.If you are reading this planning to visit for a meal or a big event, you will not be disappointed, a truly special venue.

Chose Berties to hold a surprise 70th birthday Celebration for my husband .We held a Vintage Afternoon themed tea in a perfect venue. Although the tea was booked in the function room, we were also given exclusive use of the conservatory for Birthday cake, bubbly and live music which was perfect. the staff allowed us to set up the day before, and couldn't have been more helpful, even suggesting a retro fruit cocktail to greet guests, and produced enough retro style cocktail glasses, and old fashioned cake stands. we had three coeliac guests, and the chefs made gluten free scones especially to cater for them. although changes to numbers, details etc constantly changed, the staff all were very patient, and did a great job keeping my surprise. Clearing up all our vintage china and bits and pieces was no problem, and they happily stored it all in their cellar both before and after the event, until the following day. A group of us stayed on for dinner, and there was no pressure to get seated. Thank you to all the staff for putting up with this very fussy guest, You came up trumps, well done Berties. We will be back again tonight to eat and say thank you, sorry, but this bad penny will be returning!

We looked on Tripadvisor when travelling nearby and did a quick detour for lunch and are so glad we did! We (humans and a dog!) received a very warm welcome. I had the rainbow trout and I can honestly say it was the nicest meal I’ve had in a long time, my husband also very much enjoyed his steak pie. It made his day when he realised the fruit crumble was rhubarb as that’s always been his absolute fave! If in the area again we would definitely return!

We booked here as a Birthday Meal and pre warned when booking that in the party we had a Gluten Free Allergy requirement. When booking in at the Restaurant we asked for a Gluten Free Menu. Our order was taken and within the 5 for £20 starters requested 2 lots of GF Garlic Bread. When the starters came out all were on one platter and not separated and after a couple of minutes waiting requested plates to be able to eat/share the food and at this point was told 'by the way the Garlic Bread is not Gluten Free, we didn't have any'. Thankfully my son had not started to eat!!! We then asked for the Food to be taken away and was brought back 10 minutes later as 2 no Gluten Free Buns toasted with Garlic Butter. The main meal of a Burger and Chips came out with the same bun, which was not eaten as already had enough...... Safe to say the 10% added service fee we took off. Very disappointed.

Visited here for our customary “breakfast Friday” Came here 7 years ago when Pork Pie Sam Aldridge failed the Belly Gut Buster!!! I won’t lie! On that occasion the portion was big but the quality was poor. However this time, I can honestly say it’s one of the best breakfast we’ve ever had!!!! Everything was bang on and we were extremely happy with the offering. Had same great food ( fried bread was on point ) the staff were great and and we were full up like a tin can of crackers after. The apprentice Harvey was so impressed he tried to eat his fingers. And Bald Les took a shine to the lady behind the Eastern European Grol working the till All in All we had a great time, and next time we need a breakfast, some oil, and a hub cap we will be sure to pop in. Cheers and All The Best 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
