Probably the most beautiful pub on the Marlborough high street! The flowers are stunning and something you’d expect to see at Chelsea flower show! The team inside are just as impressive! 110% experience. Service and food quality was amazing throughout. If you’re in Marlborough this pub is certainly worth a visit! The managers should be proud of the pub they’re running- it’s a credit to them.

We were visiting Marlborough on our way home from a short stay over Bristol/Bath way. It was getting close to lunchtime and as we hadn’t eaten breakfast before setting off we decided to have something to eat. Having seen the Royal Oak in the high Street and its beautiful flower display outside we decided to pop in for drink and food. My husband ordered a pie and I opted for a chicken and bacon sandwich. My husband asked for the bacon in my sandwich to be crispy as thats my preference. The bar person said no problem as they can ask for it to be cooked crispy. We waited for our meals and when they arrived my bacon was all limp and fatty. I mentioned my preference again and the lady took it back. When it was returned (after my husband had nearly finished his meal) the bacon was well cooked. However, the chicken was in big chunks and the sandwich contents very dry plus the bread was soggy underneath from sitting in the salad on the plate (pickled red onion and lettuce). I’m not in the habit of complaining but it was not at all nice. I mentioned this to the bar staff and received no apology. Very disappointing as it wasn’t a cheap meal, no apology and I’m sad to say I won’t be returning.

THE REVIEW I DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE!! we moved to the area a couple of years ago and have been using this place fairly often. I like to treat my wife and 4 kids to a meal once a month. Usually costing around £150. Never a complaint a beautiful pub with friendly staff. UNFORTUNATELY I popped in last week for a quick pint before jumping on a bus home when I arrived at the bus stop I realised my bank card had vanished. As I was walking back to the royal oak my phone started getting notifications that my card was being used online. I was shocked and slightly frantic. On speaking to staff I was out right ignored growing more frustrated I asked to speak to the manager who shrugged his shoulders as I tried to make them understand that fraud was being committed at the royal oak and I feared I had my pockets picked by a gang of youths hanging around the beer garden. Subsequently I left after being made to feel like I was causing trouble. A week later I'm still very troubled by this. I have attempted to make contact to try and find my card only to be completely ignored. Such an awful experience. This pub isn't safe, shame on you green king!!

Disappointing experience. When we visited on a Saturday at lunchtime there was a "relaxing" reggae set, which was unfortunately often too loud to hold a conversation. The volume reduced following requests, but did gradually increase over time. It became not very relaxing. Ordering was easy using the app and the food took about 35 minutes to arrived. Our party ordered fish and chips (good), steak sandwich (good), chicken and bacon chiabata (not great, chicken obviously straight from a packet and cold, as opposed to the warm as described on the menu, chiabata not toasted, seemed like an odd way to serve it, but perhaps a matter of taste) and a child's pasta and tomato sauce (not great). Serving staff were apologetic but offered no solutions. We're not local so it was unlikely we'd come again anyway, but we wouldn't come again if given the option. On the other hand, if you order the right things the food was good, so you may well have a great time. Although check in advance if you're looking for loud reggae as that might have been a one off...

Meal was really nice well worth 5 stars the only MAJOR thing that ruined it was the strong smell of people smoking weed in the garden that strong i could of got high just sitting that end of the bar . Terrible experience here on 25th May, cup final day. OK so the TV was showing the football but the staff didn't take any notice of anyone else who wanted food it would seem. We queued up, asked what the 'specials' were and were told to find a table first, which we did - but when we got back to the bar, were completely ignored! There were 4 women serving behind the bar and only one of them appeared to be working, whilst the other 3 just stood around chatting at the other till, serving just one person, while we waited at the bar, being totally overlooked. It was a humiliating experience and all they seemed to be interested in was keeping the beer flowing for the football fans. We would have spent over £50.00 on a meal today, but had to walk away because we just couldn't get served. And not because it was busy but because primarily the staff had no interest in anyone who wasn't obvious a beer swiller! We've been here many times in the past and it was good but it would appear to have gone completely downhill, so we won't bother again but will take our custom elsewhere and will recommend our family and friends do the same.

Avoid this place. For a green king pub this place is overpriced & tatty. The beer was flat & tasteless. The young lady behind the bar said this is a green king up market establishment. I know it’s Marlborough, but you can’t put a place that resembles Wetherspoons in Marlborough & charge prices for inferior ales. Choose somewhere else, it maybe the same price. But you’ll get a better beer.

Just returned home after having Sunday dinner at The Royal Oak. Unfortunately, it was absolutely awful. The carrots had the strangest texture ever, like sponge, I could have actually plaited them together! The Yorkshire pudding was dry and flat, the roast potatoes were so hard that I could have knocked a nail in with them. Add to that, a couple of floppy lukewarm cauliflower florets and chicken that was tough and bone dry, and that was my lunch! The waitress offered to change the vegetables then came back from the kitchen saying they didn't have any more. I was offered a refund, which I accepted, and came home hungry. Husband's chicken Kiev was OK. Very disappointing experience sadly.

Everytime we come across this way we head here - love it! Came with our friends this time who’d never been before & they were a bit reluctant due to some of the reviews. Thankfully we weren’t let down. Place was busy, clean, staff attentive, good food (very filling) lots of drink choices. The only let down was the Gent’s toilets - but the lady in charge(?), who has always been helpful when we’ve visited, told us they have ongoing problems & are waiting for them to be fixed. I don’t always write reviews but after my friend was concerned due to them I thought I’d comment as I feel they don’t reflect what we’ve always witnessed. We don’t come here every week, at least once a month at various times of the day, breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner & have never been disappointed & always received good friendly service. If I lived closer (Didcot) I think I would like it as my ‘local’. The other half loves it not just because of the food but the choice of sport broadcast on multiple screens.

Thought this would be a solid choice based on some of the reviews below. I was wrong. It stinks (actually, not figuratively) and the service was perfunctory at best. We didn't eat, mostly because I generally prefer venues that don't bring public toilet vibes. Decent enough drink selection from the looks of it, if you've brought a nose peg and don't mind feeling like an unwelcome inconvenience. Pretty steep prices though. I can only assume the positive reviews are mostly from people who work for the pub or Greene King.

Keep your wits about you ! We visited on the Saturday evening of the 24th of February this is our usual place to catch up for a pint and sit down as we are 5 middle aged gents (all over 50) we Probably stood out as we weren’t there to watch the football, we stayed even though it was loud and ordered our 3 non alcoholic drinks and 2 pints, all was well With our evening until we left the premises and said good by to each other standing on the pavement outside we were followed by someone who came from the pub ie barman / local we are unsure and accused of damaging a car which belonged to a waitress in the pub, but how we are all still tying to work out, we were stood on the path! we weren’t parked near the the said car! we’re hardly drunken louts falling about ! the language and attitude used towards us and not wanting to listen to reason it obviously tainted our evening. My advice is to check cctv before accusing and threatening behaviour is used THEN we will see the truth And I hope your apologies are more welcoming than the accusations... so If you’d like a peaceful night in Marlborough be aware if your middle aged and sober best look elsewhere to catch up I don’t think we’ll be back in a hurry if this is the attitude to loyal customers. I’m not out to ruin anyone’s reputation far from it but I’m also not out to get accused or threatened for others entertainment

Had booked Sunday lunch as a treat for my friends 40th birthday but was very disappointed. I ordered the roast beef dinner which allegedly came with cauliflower cheese but what arrived was two very small florets with no sign of a cheese sauce. The roast potatoes were over cooked so much so that I struggled to cut through them. The carrots were fine, although there were only a few of them. The only veg we seemed to both have an abundance of was the cabbage but it didn’t make up for it. No-one came to check if our meals were ok. We had intended to have coffee & dessert after but decided not to risk it & chose to go to a coffee shop for coffee & cake instead. It was a real shame that we had such a disappointing experience particularly when it was for a special occasion too.

Love this pub. I had lunch there with my Mom a few weeks ago and I've been back twice since then. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and good food. Yesterday's chicken kiev was delicious but slightly on the oily side. We love the food though and recommend the Royal Oak to anyone. My new favourite place to meet friends for coffee or lunch in Marlborough.

Booked online earlier in the day for dinner at 8:30. Got there only to be told kitchen closed early, no food available. But we have a reservation, I said…sorry, there’s nothing we can do about that, was the reply. That’s obviously not true, as they had my reservation for hours, and could’ve sent a message telling me the kitchen close early, and to make alternate meal arrangements! Disappointing. 2 stars for the excellent friendly and helpful staff, despite pointless visit…

Popped in here whilst walking the dog. Pretty cold outside and both of us very much feeling it! Certainly a warm welcome! The bar staff were nothing but very friendly and helpful. My furry companion was given treats and hugs which he thoroughly enjoyed and the hot drink I had (too early for anything else, even for me!) was reviving. A charming and cozy Inn, the staff a credit to it. Well worth a visit amongst the several other public houses in the the town.

A Family member decided to meet here for a family meal for his 2 year olds birthday. The table was pre booked for 11 people. When we arrived the initial appearance of the place was slightly worrying, then we entered the building to find there was only 2 other people in the pub, drinking only.. However as many had travelled we decided to stay and eat here as planned. Once everybody had arrived we asked for menus only to be told they didn't have any and that the food options were written on black boards near the bar.. By 5.30pm we had placed our orders. We were still the only people ordering food in the restaurant. At 6.45 the food has still not arrived, the waitress comes out and then says they have no corn on the cob which was ordered as part of the children's meals. 5 minutes later the children's meals finally arrive! They asked for ketchup and mayo, only to be told they had run out, but the landlord was going to pop to local shop to get some. Finally the rest of the food started to appear from the kitchen.. The pork chop was 90% fat, The 'Salad' was a handful of wilted lettuce only, The baked beans were cold, hard and almost white in colour.! Myself and one other had ordered 'Flame Grilled' Chicken burger with blue cheese.. These were the last plates to leave the kitchen after waiting nearly 90 minutes in an empty restaurant.. What we received was an oven cooked chicken breast in a soggy bun. The outside of the chicken had gone hard, once I had bitten into it I realised it was pink (raw) in the middle!! As was the other burger ordered. After showing the waitress she spoke to the manager who kindly told us we would not be charged for the burgers!! Instead of the manager approaching our table and apologising for the wait, the poor service and awful food, he put all of the pressure on the young lady that was running front of house alone.. She seemed very embarrassed, upset and flustered after our time at the restaurant. We felt very sorry for the girl. Very unprofessional from the management.. So in Short. Scruffy initial appearance. Dated, dirty interior. Lack of drinks and condiments. Ridiculous waiting times. Disgusting , overpriced food. Very very poor management.. AVOID !!!

Lovely brunch, great service and relaxed atmosphere. Went there with my wife for a relaxed breakfast/brunch and we weren’t disappointed.
