In short, a lovely pub let down by poor service and food. Visited 1pm on a Tuesday. Service was very poor, we had to tell the servers three times we were ready to order over a 15min period. When it came to paying the bill, it was the same, we had to keep asking. Servers were not busy, the place only had about 20 people in including our party, they were chatting to each other rather than looking after their customers. They left the card reader with us and never came back ... so we took our card and left. Food was mediocre at best. Two of our party had steaks, and both we overdone (my rare was medium/done). The cheesecake was the worst I've had, three of us couldn't eat it, taste and more so the texture were just off ... the base was fine. I've never left a poor review before, but this place, on that day, deserved it.

Carvery was lovely, good choice on the children's menu. Service was a little bit slow and not very attentive, but the staff were friendly enough. A big bug bear of mine is when children's meals are served on a HOT place(!) not suitable for kids!

A friend and I were travelling and we stopped off here for a coffee and a cup of tea. We found the service, welcoming, approachable, and warm and. Based on the time of day we went in there there were four guys sitting there drinking with one of them having a bit of an attitude which was one of the reasons I left sooner and impacted the environment. I'm sure this was just an unusual experience and will definitely come back for a meal when I return this way.

I decided to treat for my husband to a Sunday Carvery as he had been very ill. The staff were very friendly & accommodating & got us to our table quickly. However this is where it started to go from, "great to be here" to "wish we hadn't bothered". The drinks didn't arrive until after we'd collected our plates of food & then had to go & find someone to remind them of our drinks order. The food was tepid & the beef quite chewy, also the knives couldn't cope with cutting the meat. The drinks finally arrived half way through our meal but the final straw was the Sticky Toffee Pudding & ice cream that was neither special nor worth the princely sum of £7.25 as the toffee pudding portion was lost in the middle of the plate with a scoop of ice cream that looked tiny & sad! Couple this with the attempt at redecoration that had paint droplets all over our table & neighbouring furniture, flooring & daubed over beams, walls & speakers where someone clearly should have either taken far more care or employed a professional to do the job properly. All in all we were very disappointed & will probably never return!!

What has happened to this establishment, we've visited many times before, the last time being about 9 months and every thing was perfect.I took the family on Sunday for an evening meal, after looking at the menu online, but when we arrived the menu offered was half the size of previous visit, we struggled to find something we all liked after ordering the food, it took an hour to arrive when the sausage & mash turned up the portion was really small and all three sausages where like charcoal and the sausages were the same for my grandsons meal ,so both meals were sent back. The waitress was really apologetic but the manager passed our table several times and not a word of apology or acknowledgement. Summery ...badly managed. incompetent chefs, upside waitress nice & polite, this place is off our good pubs to stop off in now unfortunately.

It’s impossible to rate. I booked a table for Sunday lunch. I’m back in Shaftesbury to care for my elderly parents and just needed a brief respite. No one greeted us, we had to ask where to sit, we asked three times to order a drink, after over half an hour of being ignored, we gave up and left. They weren’t busy, just disinterested. We ended up in The Mitre who were great,

Stale sweaty smell on arrival, men's toilet filthy and leaking (no secondary toilet) food bland (children's comment was that the mac and cheese tasted like it was out of a can), burnt bacon but undercooked egg in the farmhouse burger, missed or forgotten drinks order and on leaving the staff didn't ask how the meal was. (Not one meal of the four was finished but no one noticed) In fairness 3 staff on for a Saturday night so not really their fault but management/ owners clearly not up to it. To be honest, so fed up by then that I just paid and left. It never used to be like this, gone downhill rapidly. Won't be going again.

Food was OK, staff where friendly but how can it take 15 minutes to get our first drink? When I queried how much longer it might be, I was told, bear with us, we are extremely busy (there where only 4 occupied tables inside)! Really needed a bit more organisation and maybe a little bit more covid awareness. When I asked for vinegar it was taken from a couple who had just used it and plonked in front of me with no attempt at sanitising first. Only little niggles but it didn't make for a comfortable evening. 4 Years later! New owners! Went for a Sunday carvery with family, not bad at all, next time I might give the beef a miss (bit chewy) but the pork was lovely, with plenty of crackling. Good choice of veg and the roasties were lovely. I’ve had much better real ale but I often find pubs that concentrate on food don’t really cater for real ale drinkers. Overall a pleasant lunchtime meal with family, a good atmosphere and pleasant staff, I will happily visit again.

When the Coke is the best thing in the meal, something really wrong!!! Came here after having seen their menu online. First red flag (and I think this is 101 Customer Service): no one there to welcome us in and take us to a table. The second one came when we are clearly done looking at menu (menu is still on the table) and no one comes to take the order for about 15 minutes. Was it busy? nope! We were the only ones waiting to be served and most tables empty. After spotting a young guy looking at the laptop at the front bar I had to go ask him whether or not I needed to order at the bar… he came to take it as if he was doing us a favour. Food came… i had the pork belly with dauphinois potatoes and veggies. Bland potatoes and cold veggies. My partner had a veggie curry with chips on the side and papadom with mango chutney. Big regret faces. The papadom seems to be old, chutney gone bad and curry and rice wasn’t good either. I actually hate giving bad reviews but (and this goes to the management) you guys need a wake up call. This is not proper service. Get staff that actually cares about what a great customer service is and what a joy when the dishes come clean. I have seen more sense of price in some McDonalds. I can confidently say we’re not coming back and sincerely wish you reconsider your business core values.

The service was appalling and the food awful. It took three goes at ordering as they didn't know what food was available. Our drinks arrived well after other later tables had been served. The food arrived after 90 minutes. The pasta and prawn bowls had three prawns and hardly any tomato sauce and only a few strands of vegetables. My hunter chicken was overcooked and the chips I think from a packet. Taking the drinks and one meal off the bill did not make up for an awful experience. Led a motorcycle group ride from Solent area to Somerset / Dorset, with a Sunday lunch stop at the Half Moon, Shaftesbury. 11 of us for lunch and we'd booked ahead so we had tables put together ready for us. Arriving about 1pm, the place was busy. We were fortunate to be served by a lovely young lady, Alyssa. Excellent customer service. She was charming - with an Essex-meets-Somerset type of accent - and confident; and nothing seemed to phase her, not even the items that weren't available on the menu or the pace of the kitchen. Clearly best to go for the carvery, but not everyone who has an evening meal planned wants that at lunchtime.

Sadly not a pleasant experience. An enormous choice on the menu and I suspect most of it pre-prepared frozen then thawed and microwaved to order. Fish cakes very overcooked (crunchy) and chicken wings were enormous so asked for them to be separated. When they came back they looked as though they had been beaten to death with a hammer. In fairness the boss did take them off the bill. Was concerned the beer was off so was offered another but that too had a very weird taste so assumed it was just me. My suggestion for what it’s worth would be to scrap the enormous menu and focus on a few home cooked favourites

Really disappointed! We have heard so many great reviews about this place but we were seriously let down. Visited Sunday 25th August as a treat. Quickly sat at the table which was great but all down hill from there. We waited 15 mins before WE asked for drinks (it is apparently table service). Drinks arrived shortly after ordered. Food! Big let down. Not hot, over cooked chicken and crisps cooked to an inch of their life. Chicken wings tasted of fish and pretty much not ate. Nobody asked if we needed anything condiment wise! We asked and they never arrived. We left half the food but staff didn’t check back during eating and to be frank the younger waiter and waitress were not interested at all! They where more interested in who was going to get a vape next! After we ate we waited and waited but no staff arrived to clear plates, check back or ask if we wanted pudding! Ended up paying at bar and skipped puddings. Toilets! The gents were filthy with urine all over floor! We skipped using these and visited the garage up the road. Such a shame as we travelled just to eat here today and the only person who seemed to enjoy their job was the barman! We could understand if it was busy but it wasn’t. Went early Sunday evening with family. The pub was almost empty when we arrived and a waiter came after a few minutes to see what drinks we wanted. Three of us decided on carvery after being told it was available , one ordered a mixed grill and two girls ordered loaded fries with pulled pork. We waited a good 20 minutes and then went to get our carvery....oh my goodness what a disappointment! There was a tiny bit of beef left and some dried up turkey, the roast potatoes were rock hard and half the veg was missing. No apology or offer to get more veg so we put some of the poor offering on our plates and went back to eat. I can honestly say this was the worst carvery I have had and really something should be done about it. At no point did anyone ask if the food was ok so no opportunity to complain. The girls fries were not good and both complained they were so peppery they were unable to finish them and they both like peppery food so it must have been extreme. The mixed grill was"ok" but given the price it was poor. We won't be back which is a shame as its a local pub. Suggest the brewery take a good look at the food being served up. If you run out of half the carvery you shouldn't carry on serving it at full price if at all!

I ordered a Caesar salad, I asked for no anchovies. Waited an hour for our food. My salad had anchovies in it. I returned it. The waitress came out saying they had “re made” my salad. It had an anchovy in it! They hadn’t re made it at all, the kitchen staff had just picked out some of the anchovies. I will never eat here again because if I had an allergy I wouldn’t trust that this establishment would actually respect that! Also the kids burger had burger sauce in it, pea water all over the plate which meant my daughter’s chips were wet and she didn’t eat them! It’s got to be pretty bad when a child doesn’t eat chips!

Very very disappointing! We have visited this pub for food over a number of year’s and sadly would not be returning or recommending. Booked a table for 5 adults, all went for the carvery, only veg on offer were roast potatoes, two very small pieces of carrot, a teaspoon of leeks, no swede or red cabbage and two small pieces of crackling! My husband, and two of our friends had to wait for approximately 35 minutes to be informed there was veg but no swede or Yorkshire puddings. The service was appalling, wondering if the staff avoided our table because three of us complained. I rarely complain as I used to work in the restaurant business and know how hard it can be. The manager said he would sort the bill out because of the poor service but sadly this wasn’t followed through.

Carvery was one of the best we’ve had! The meat was so tender. Staff were lovely as we rang up 10 minutes before they were due to stop serving and kept the carvery open for us. Lovely pub, great banter!

Recently visited three times over the period of my holiday. Food on all times good to very good. First visit very good and attentive. Second visit in the evening, again good. Unfortunately the last visit could not be the opposite, food very good, service lacking and surprisingly below average. Manager said be with you in a minute, waited and eventually had to go and order ourselves. Ordered our puddings, no spoons and no sign of them being produced. So had to find some from another table. Overall a good pub, shame some staff let the side down by being on their mobiles - poor

We have eaten here whilst owned by previous owner so were concerned by negative feedback over the last year. However, we had a lovely meal, I had ham,egg and chips with piccalilli and my wife had chicken tikka masala. Both meals arrived quickly, hot and delicious. The service was great as was the beer. Hopefully with a new chef in place this pub will now delight all future customers. We wish them good luck

Even though it was quite empty we waited at the door to be seated, waited at our table for server, waited to order beer, waited to order food, waited for water, waited for food, found out they didn't have what we ordered, waited for menu, waited to order, waited for different food ... Then waited for cheque... Food was OK, but will find another eatery for next meal.

Absolutely appalling service - after a one hour wait our food was overcooked and inedible. The "pulled pork" consisted of 2 large pieces of gristle. On complaining our main course was free - considering it was inedible hardly surprising! The main waiter (manager?) was dressed in a filthy shirt and seemed totally disinterested in engaging with us although other staff were more attentive despite it obviously being their break period. I would only recommend a visit if you are a food masochist!

Went to the Half Moon on Monday 1st July, with friends, the place was not overly busy being a Monday. However after ordering our meals we waited around one hour , when they finally turned up , items were missing , green beans , eggs etc, the chap behind the bar was very accommodating, however couldn’t resolve the issues. The food was just ok , nothing brilliant , desserts were ok but only one small piece of meringue on Elton mess, Overall very disappointing experience, I wonder how they cope at peak times.

Had a very fine Sunday Lunch at the Half Moon today. It was really busy and despite this the waiting staff were attentive and lovely. We had a carvery lunch. I went for the beef, which was pink in the middle, just how I like it. The roast potatoes and Yorkshire pud were really sublime. Best of all though was the pudding. We both had the passion fruit and lime crunch tart with mango ice-cream. This was exceptionally light and zesty!! I will make it a regular thing. Couldn't beat it.

Absolutely shocking. Unbelievably poor service. We were the only people in the place and it took 20 minutes for our plates to be cleared after we had finished eating and only then because I was waving my arms to get the staffs attention. Would rather go hungry than return here.

The half moon hosted the wake for our family member's funeral and they did a really brilliant job. They had set out a large area for the pub for us and had all of the food ready for our arrival. The food was delicious and catered to everyone perfectly. We also attended in the evening for a meal with 10 people and again the food was really great and the two young female waitresses were brilliant.

Stopped for lunch, will definitely not be going back. There were not many eating, waiter was ok, polite and didn’t wait long to get served however the food wasn’t, my husband ordered the fish and chips with mushy peas and I had the king prawn linguine. The fact that there was so much pea shoots on top of the linguine you couldn’t see the pasta and it was old and wilted really didn’t bode well. It was just warm and had 4 flavour less prawns for £16.25, then the fish, chips and mushy peas was inedible they had been cooked in old oil for far to long and as for the peas or should I say pea, the container they served it in was like a MacDonalds sauce pot oh what they called tomato sauce was pale red jelly tasting of vinegar all this for £15.95. After complaining to the waiter that the fish and chip’s really was inedible they did take it off the bill, but all in all a place we will definitely not be returning to.

Book for 5pm on Saturday, for 3 adults and 3 kids. Took 45mins or more for food to come out, even when it did no cutlery or sauces which after waiting for longer we just found ourselves. Food was average at best, the Halloumi, Grapefruit and Walnut salad was absent grapefruit. Even after chasing food staff were absent. No apology for delay in food. Kid meals supposed to come with ice cream which we didn’t receive - after finally eating 1hr and 10 mins with 3 small children and only just receiving mains, we needed to leave anyway. The pub advertises itself as family friendly but our experience was far from it. I live locally and had taken visiting friends as though would make a pre - bath time easier than cooking etc. a total disaster and would never return, especially as food very expensive for what it is. Many better alternatives locally. We did have however receive the bill from a waiter who was very sweet with the kids, he was stand out. Other than this service appalling.

Food was basic, cooked from frozen. I don’t know why I bothered. Beyond poor. Hygiene, what hygiene?! Couldn’t even wash my hands in the gents toilet. No soap, no hand towels if I wanted to dry my hands and the air dryer had a button, but yea, didn’t work either. Hope the chef had better. Same as all their other pubs. No clue how to run a pub, let alone a bath
