I’ll start with the positive. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Now more can be said about the food. We had a steak burger of which you would expect to be cooked to your liking. 3 x roast trio and a kids meal. When it come out after having to ask how long it would be the burger was very well done like it had been re heated hard and dry. We took it over to a staff member as service was slow for him to them come back over to the table to ask again what actually was the problem because apparently the burger comes how it comes you can’t choose medium etc. after us stating how dry and over cooked it was he agreed to cook another which took another 20 minutes. Now for the roast that’s states pork belly with crackling which was sloppy fat. The potatoes were hard and tasted like had been reheated the best thing on the plate was the veg. Very over priced for what it is. And maybe re word your menu.

Waiter rude, scruffy. Staff member behind the bar on her phone, ignores us. Rude waiter pipes up that she us kitchen staff and not working. Not a mind reader I don't know that do I but his attitude is awful. Had dealings with him before when we had bad service and awful cold food, he was much nicer then. I can see why you have 6 people in your restaurant on a Wednesday night obviously don't want the business. Won't be going back ever. The place is a dive and smell of damp.

We have been coming to this restaurant for many years, but the last 2 visits have been extremely disappointing. We came in October last year for my mums birthday and everything was cold ( not even warm) and the service was awful. Because it is local and my mum isn’t able to travel far we came again last night for Mother’s Day. Again the service was so long , there was 5 adults and 2 children we arrived at 6.00 and didn’t leave till 9.20 as we waited so long for starter and main course. The waitress accidentally spilt a drink over my mum, which I never received another drink. The food was very underwhelming, the veg was a soggy mess, the chicken and leak pie had no filing and was totally dry. The prawn cocktail. Was like water. If we had been asked if our meals were ok we would have told you no but no one asked. When the plates were collected we told you how disappointed we were but nothing was done about it. I think not only could you have replaced the spilt drink, I think as good will gesture you could have given my mum a free dessert as she was dripping in coke. And done something about the awful food. After coming to the restaurant for 35 years I think sadly it will be our last visit.

Absolute shambles! What a joke! Went for Mother’s Day and what a complete disaster. When given and eating some of the luke warm starters we realised the prawns were raw! We were left waiting sat there for more than an hour and half. I fully understand it’s busier on Mother’s Day but that was a disgusting service and food quality. A lot of people were waiting ridiculous amount of time for food and being apologised to for multiple reasons. We were completely forgotten about and when trying to speak to someone they were busy and didn’t have time to stop so ended up taking the food up to the bar to complain. Even then we were told the prawns were pre cooked and fine (which is even more embarrassing) they eventually agreed under light they were in fact raw. With barely an apology. We left hungry and disappointed with hardly an option for food - and no hope the main would be in an acceptable edible state and would have been served hours later. The waiter was even complaining about how overworked he was - felt sorry for him. Understaffed and Disgusting! After speaking to another couple they said they had been in there since 2pm and still waiting for mains at 5:30pm. Thankfully somehow the rose and crown across the road came to the rescue and somehow managed to seat us. The food, and service was amazing! Thank god!

Birthday gift of Prosecco was great and the primary reason for revisiting. The starter pate was underwhelming very poor value for money and the portion size should not have left the kitchen as this was embarassingly small portion. The "garnish" of a violet was wilted!. Main course aubergine parmagianio was very limited in taste, very poor value for money considering it was priced at £14.25 the accompanying salad was poorly dressed and insignificant in portion size. The gammon steak was acceptable but request for "eggs to be splashed" did not appear to have been understood as egg yolks were clearly "hard". Drinks were fine as there was no involvment with staff. Service was slow but much better than our previous visit and our order was as requested unlike previous occasion where the wrong order main course was not as requested.

After a really good Boxing Day meal last year we decided to book again for Boxing Day this year and deeply regretted it. We booked a table for 6 for a 4pm meal and was there at 3:55 to be told our table wasn’t ready so had a 15 minute wait to sit down. As it was a set menu with very few options we all knew what we was going to have in advance and was really disappointed to find the starter for 4 out of the 6 people wasn’t available, this got worse when the same 4 people were told there main wasn’t available either. I found it quite unbelievable as it was just steak . The dessert didn’t get any better as yet again people who wanted a cheese board was told this was off the menu as well. The wait for any food as unbelievably slow and after waiting over hour and a half we were starting to get inpatient waiting especially as it was for meals we didn’t even want !! When the food did come out it was lukewarm and one meal the fish was over cooked and dry . To their credit they did remove the drinks from the bill which was around £60 but to be honest I would of rather paid the drinks bill and had the meal we was expecting. All in all an absolute disappointment

I write this to express my profound disappointment with the experience my party and I had at The Royal Oak on the High Street Orpington on Christmas Day(25/12/2023). Our visit, intended to be a special and memorable dining experience, was regrettably marred by a multitude of distressing issues that significantly impacted our anticipated festive celebration. To start, the food served fell way below the standard expected for such an occasion (or any other occasion for that matter). The gravy provided was watered down with oil, was almost fluorescent orange in colour rendering it inedible, and effectively contaminated the food on the plate, the waiter acknowledged this and immediately took the gravy boat away, apologising profusely, we then waited another 10 minutes for another gravy boat to be brought to the table, which was precisely the same as the one which they had taken away, the waiter then claimed that the chef told him it had been a problem with the suppliers and not the chef fault Moreover, the pigs in blankets, a traditional festive delight, were inexplicably made from cold stuffing wrapped in cold bacon instead of the expected sausages, which signalled a shortage of essential ingredients despite our pre-booking for a Christmas meal, the vegetables were cold and soggy and the roast potatoes undercooked. Furthermore, a delay between courses was an excruciatingly long—55 minutes—which resulted in an increasingly unsettling wait. Unfortunately, this wait culminated in an awkward overlap as our Christmas dinner plates were being taken away while dessert was served, detracting significantly from the essence of a cohesive and enjoyable dining experience at Christmas. However, the starter and desserts were fine. When I raised these concerns with the manager (Izzy), her response was deeply disheartening. The manager's dismissive attitude and lack of concern for these glaring issues were highly unprofessional and utterly disrespectful (Izzy just repeatedly shrugged her shoulders rolled her eyes and pulled face at me), especially on a day when patrons expected a memorable and exceptional dining experience - As a result of the extensive long wait for service, our allotted 2 hour table time elapsed as we were finishing dessert, Izzy (the manager) then sent the waiter (John) over to ask us to leave, much to the embarrassment of John , who could not apologise enough for Izzy’s actions. What was particularly alarming was Izzy’s statement that “I should show some compassion to the chef because he had been working for 28 hours continuously to meet the Christmas demands”(in an attempt to justify poor service & standards). Such practices not only breach labour laws but also pose severe risks to both employee well-being and food hygiene standards, which I suspect is highly concerning for the reputation and operation of The Royal Oak. Having been dedicated patrons of The Royal Oak and choosing to spend last Christmas Day with them, this experience was not only disheartening but further compounded by the restaurant manager callously shrugging off the complaint, displaying a dismissive and apathetic attitude towards the legitimate concerns raised by us. NEVER AGAIN!

Wow!! Where do I start. We went on Christmas Day for dinner. Arrived and placed our drinks order. The starters arrived first and the drinks arrived after the starters were finished which was not good - they said the bar is running behind!! The main Christmas meal (Turkey) arrived and the vegetables were cold ….and I mean ice cold!! We sent it back. Then they arrived back and the vegetables were overcooked, the Turkey tasted processed like from Iceland (the shop). The potatoes were under cooked - you really cannot call them roast potatoes. The Christmas pudding was tastless and not enjoyable. We waited for one hour 50 minutes between the starter and main course. The manager was very defensive with a bit of an attitude. We heard so many people complaining all around us which added to the disappointing experience. The food is generally cheap and nasty - my advice is keep well away unless you like cheap shop!! In fact the price was about £82 per head…do not know how they can justify that!! The chiefs need to go back to college!! A good note John our waiter was trying really hard to make up for his employers disaster. Well done John!! I live local to pub and will dine there again!! By the way, the one star was for John!!

Only two people serving at this busy time of the year is a recipe for disaster. This review is not a reflection on the staff as they did do their best, however taking everything into account we felt we were in an episode of faulty towers. Some of the items we had pre ordered from the festive menu, were not available on the evening and the Roast Turkey arrived with at least one pound of brussel sprouts on the plate, which was most off putting. The meal itself was very salty and the Turkey very dry. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Such a lovely pub but we won’t be eating here again in a hurry.

MORE AT Google

I had dinner last night with my partner and elderly parents. The dining area seemed empty - however, we waited ages for the starters and main course. Mum and I wanted the prawns and salmon, but you had run out, so we had to choose something different. The table further down made a complaint about slow service and left. After we had been there an hour and a half and only completed the starters, my partner had a polite word with one of the waiters and our main course miraculously turned up moments later. The turkey dinner had too many potatoes, which were new and not roasted as stated on the menu. Both waiters were very nice and apologetic. I think the issue was that another table had put in a large order just before us which delayed things. It took so long that no one wanted dessert or coffee as it was getting late. We had a half hour journey to drop my parents home before another half hour journey to our home. We all had an early start on Friday morning. We have had dinner at your lovely restaurant four times now, and three out of those four times, I've had to choose something different because you had run out of the main course prawn linguine, and last night run out of the salmon and prawn starters. The waiters are lovely - however, I wonder what goes on in the kitchen! It was a shame because we had all been looking forward to the dinner for weeks and felt let down. My parents are elderly and don't go out much these days. Everyone should be made to feel special and important on such an occasion. We all left feeling that we weren't as important as the other larger party. I want to make it clear that the waiters were lovely and charming and apologised many times. Perhaps you could introduce a system that allows people to place their orders as they book their table online and take a deposit so the kitchen staff can plan in advance.

My family and I have been coming to the Royal Oak for many years now. I do think it is one of the better places to eat in our area but I felt it important to give some constructive feedback in this review. 1. If a customer requests a very specific table well in advance and it is confirmed then that table should have a reserved sign so other people DO NOT sit at it. This was not a good start to our evening! 2. ALL staff should be made fully aware of what the soup of the day and pie of the day is. 3. If a party arrives with a child then give them the child's menu. Our waitress I think was quite new and so this feedback is not meant to be nasty criticism - I used to work in the service industry many years ago and know that is tough. 4. Please consider making child portions of adult meals. The kids' menu is really uninspiring and not particularly well presented. 5. The orange duck parfait for starter was great but a 3rd slice of toast was definitely needed. Also the toast itself was warm and crispy but didn't look toasted - it's not just how it taste it's the look as well! 6. For the mains I had pie of the day. The pastry was looking very sorry for itself. I took a photo which I won't share here (happy to send privately) but the chef clearly dropped the ball on this one. The spring onion mash potato was lukewarm and all of the plates were heated unevenly or barely at all. 7. Had to chase my glass of red which meant my main course was half finished by the time it arrived - the restaurant was not that busy. So those were the main negatives but there is plenty to be positive about - the place has a great atmosphere and I was very happy with the alternative table we were given. The staff are very friendly, you get pretty decent size portions and with restaurant prices going through the roof these days it does offer better value for money than many places. Yes I had a few grumbles above but the food is tasty and I really can't stress how special the place feels, particularly when the log fires are burning. Our waitress had a great professional attitude and we were happy to leave the tip - just need to make sure the basics are solid e.g. knowing what soup of the day is. I know this will come with time!

The service from the two brothers on duty behind the bar, taking the orders, bringing out the food and clearing the table was exemplary. They could have done with some help as they apologised themselves for the slow delivery of both drinks and food.

Great food, and good value for money. A 3 course meal for 4 adults, one teenager and an 11yo, with drinks was £300. Food was delicious.

Nice, welcoming pub, in the Vintage Inns chain. Good food for the price point. Really helpful and friendly staff, who were good with food allergens. A pub that does what it sets out to do pretty well.

Unfortunately the two recent times I came here, several dishes on the menu were unavailable. Then the same happened for the desserts. We were told they were waiting for a delivery, The time before they said it was because a large table had just ordered most of the food. The food we did eat was very nice and the service was very professional. It’s a shame that the food on the menu is often not available.

Firstly, I used to come to the Royal Oak many years ago as a child and was looking forward to enjoying the visit knowing it had been taken over by Vintage Inns. I have been to several Vintage Inns over the years and generally have a good experience. However, my visit to the Royal Oak was very disappointing. There were five of us dining, celebrating my mothers birthday. Three of us ordered the roast dinner and when the Gravy arrived, it was full of oil. I told the staff there was something wrong with the Gravy and they advised they had run out and so used the juices from the chicken. There was no chicken on the menu (we had Roast Turkey). I told my children not to have the Gravy but my wife did and she got sick later that night. I wanted the Steak but was advised by the staff that the steak was poor that day and I should avoid it. So I had the chicken pie instead, which was OK but not amazing. Finally when paying the bill, the staff gave us a code to submit a survey and asked if we could give a 5 star review as it would please the Manager. The venue is lovely but the food standards really let it down for us. I hope it improves.

Food excellent. Inside is very dark and poor lighting. No atmosphere. Service was functional at best by the landlady. Rude at points due to the way she delivered her message about us having a coffee and a pasty in our possession whilst also spending £80 on food and drink in the dining area. Everyone where we were sitting also looked at us when she was very curt and abrupt in speaking to us. Two tables turned and spoke to us about how rude this landlady or manager was. Last meal of the break in the local area and left a bad taste as the food was good.

We had a very relaxed and enjoyable meal at The Royal Oak. The staff were helpful, attentive and nothing was too much trouble, even offering to take a family group photo. The menu was varied and offered great choice. It was beautifully presented and all meals were delicious. The drinks menu was also extensive offering both alcohol and non alcoholic options. My request to sit by one of the fires was no problem and all the interior areas of the pub had charm and character. My only down comment would be to improve the exterior as it is looking tired and not particularly welcoming unlike the interior.
