WOW! What amazing service.. We arrived litterally as they opened the door.....! (what Lushes!) I took my mum out for a bite to eat.. Wine was perfect... Ale (such choice! had an Exmoor ale - served with the best care) I ordered the Oak Burger.... Mum the fish & Chips. Mums eyes rolled with the taste of the fish and her chunky chips were incredible...And her peas were cooked not bullets! My burger was "just the right amount of seasoning" - not rare, great taste , lovely toasty bun, salad and fries... In fact huge. And the gherkin on the top was the crowning glory. And a decent one at that. Service was IMPECABLE - everyone of the staff was SO helpful... the fire was lit...so we were cosy in minutes - fabulous atmosphere - easy parking, lovely pub 11/10 folks... Much as I live in Portsmouth next time Im back you are our "GO TO" place for quality and reasonably priced food - and superbly kept Ale! Just keep doing what you do Thank you Steve & Mum!

The Sunday Roast is always spot on! The concept of a sharing board/platter works well and makes this place unique. Consistent food and service and thoroughly enjoy coming here. We wish this place was nearer to home so we could walk! A good sized beer garden with plenty of tables and an element of cover. Keep up the good work and would highly recommend this place to anyone. Have visited again but on a different day to a Sunday and must say we were really impressed! The food was extremely good, service spot on and the team very friendly and receptive. Still walked away (well cycled) thinking we wish this place was nearer to us.... Although I'm pretty sure my partner would say different as I'd be here as much as possible! We have visited again, yesterday (Sunday 11th June) with some friends and can't fault it! The young serving team are extremely polite. The food is exceptional and our friends specifically ask to come here. Plenty of veg and lashings of gravy, with beef, pork belly and chicken cooked to perfection!! We've come again for what must be absolute loads in the last few years! Yet again it doesn't disappoint, the roast is extremely good value and cooked to perfection. The landlord and team are all welcoming and appreciate your custom. There's nothing I can't fault about this place today. Atmosphere was great, buzzing and vibrant. Maybe a little loud at times but isn't that great at a time when so many pubs are closing?!? I'd have uploaded some more pics of our recent visit if I could do so. My daughter chose to come here as a treat for her excellent school report over anything else we suggested. Says it all!!! Please support this lovely local and ensure it remains for generations to come!

We stopped adhock here after at trip to Glastonbury, it’s on a main road and might not strike you as a typical out of town country pub - BUT when you go in, and you should, you’ll be greeted by young friendly staff and nice clean environment, that appears to also have some history to it by the look of the worn flag stones and low ceilings. We sat outside on a Sunday with the dog, and ordered a sharing platter Sunday lunch. I kid you not the food hit the table in about 5 mins - hot and on a groovy mini table, piles of beef pork and chicken perfectly cooked, crackling and crunchy roast potatoes- two hot plates to eat off- and then a tray of hot fresh vegetables, greens - cabbage and bacon with cream and carrots and swede. A really great experience I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a top notch Sunday roast at a good price. Brilliant!

This was our first visit and we and our 2 friends were pleasantly surprised, very welcoming young staff, and a rustic atmosphere. The Sunday lunch menu is simple as you are served 3 meats (beef, pork and chicken along with roast potatoes, parsnips and Yorkshire puddings) on a sharing board accompanied by dishes of greens, bacon and cabbage cauliflower cheese, carrots and a large boat of gravy. Everything was hot and tasty with hot plates, we couldn’t finish all that was on the table!! Well done highly recommended. Terry, Jenny, Neil and Wendy

Eight of us had a carvery. The food was ok, but it was brought out on a sharing board, which is awkward. Nobody wants to share out meat and roasties, then veg, etc, before eating. Then you get everyone side-eying each other because there's a spare spud...... For the price, portions were small. Service was good, but I don't think a return visit is on the cards.

Although we have eaten at the Royal Oak a number of times. We hadn’t taken my Best man and his wife. The pub is closed Monday & Tuesday so we booked for Wed. I recommend the Belly Pork to our guests and my wife had the salmon while I had the lamb with dauphinoise potatoes (which was a change to the menu). Needless to say it hit all the taste buds. Complemented excellently with the sauce, crispy chard, roasted carrots and asparagus (with the salmon). Although, other people were eating we were the only ones eating indoors. Consequently, the service was excellent.

My husband and I had an excellent Sunday sharing board. The beef was lovely and pink, very tasty pork with proper crispy crackling and tender chicken. All of the vegetables were cooked perfectly - I even ate the cabbage and bacon ( I don’t like cabbage)!!! My only small observation was the puddings - there were no allergens listed but the helpful staff soon found out from the kitchen. We will definitely return.

The food tasted amazing which you don't always get when a large party is being fed, but they got it spot on. Update May 2024 We returned 16th really looking forward to another lovely meal, how wrong we were. Fish & Chips - batter was not fully cooked, very anaemic looking and tasteless. We were hungry and did our best to eat it but had to leave the batter. When we said that it wasn’t cooked properly we were answered with “oh sorry about that, we’ve done loads this evening and you are the only complaint we’ve had”. We were not interested in how other peoples meals were just ours. She walked off and that was the last we were spoken to. Disappointed and convinced it was probably the chefs night off. Not sure we’ll be back. Shame as it’s our local. March 2024 Our first visit. 4 for atmosphere as it was very quiet. We have driven past this pub for over two years. Finally came down to try. The outside is deceptive. It does not reflect the interior which has been tastefully done in pastel colours, with painted wood panelling. A nice range of guest beers, ales and ciders alongside the standard offerings. Food was required, a long drive preceded this visit. A nicely sized menu offering, plus specials, all of which read so amazing we were unsure what to pick. One roast pork belly and one burger ordered. Neither disappointed. Burger was homemade with a fresh sourdough/rustic roll. Nice flavour, so much better than the mass produced rubbish. The pork belly was so tender (see video) that at no point did it require cutting with a knife! The gravy was sumptuous and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. We will be back to try the rest of the menu 😊

If you're not a local, don't even bother trying to visit this "restaurant". Visited this evening as a group of 5. Non welcoming atmosphere. Ordered drinks and asked to order food which they accepted as they had only opened a few minutes prior. 5 minutes later a young girl came out and said they don't have enough food to feed us and the tables that are booked in for the evening so we can't have anything which I suspect was a lie. We then saw them taking other people's food orders ( clearly locals that they knew). We then overheard a local moaning and bitching with the bar staff about wanting to sit where we were sat. We swiftly finished our drinks and left. Will not be returning and will be advising others not to visit. Went down to the road to The Ashcott and had a lovely meal and was greeted by a lovely atmosphere. I'd advise going there instead.

We stopped here after getting off the motorway at Bridgewater after coming home from Wales. After passing a few closed down pubs we happened to notice the Royal Oak. After making sure they were dog friendly, we were greeted by the very polite and friendly staff member a credit to pub as a first Impression who took our drinks and food order. We had three meals which were very good and well prepared, good quality and well prepared meals, a good choice of meals. We even had a dessert one very nice brownie and a very cheese board. The pub was what you call a pub with a good selection of drinks and wasn't trying to be something it wasn't which is what I like. If we are in the area again we definitely will be back.

Went here for the Sunday Roast platter as it was my mother’s birthday. Booking was easy over the phone, I needed to add an extra person to our table. I left a message on the pubs answerphone and received a text confirmation so communication and booking was a good experience. The car park is huge so no issues with parking, decent surface too so no worries about mud, puddles or car damage! There isn’t much choice on a Sunday, you pretty much know you’re going for the Sunday roast; although there are variations for vegetarians etc. Upon entering the pub it’s really well done in the style of a traditional English country pub; it’s very aesthetically pleasing. The staff were warm and welcoming, the bar is right in front of you as you enter which means drinks were quickly ordered for us. We set up a tab and proceeded to our table which was in a large open area of the pub which at a guess would have been the skittle alley at some point in the past. Again it was done out very nicely, clean decent tables and chairs; just a pleasant environment to relax in. The Sunday roast platter was reasonably quick to arrive, here they do serve it up on a platter, you then help yourself to what you want. Separate dishes for veg and gravy are provided. We did have to ask for extra apple sauce etc as we were only provided with one small pot which wasn’t going to cater for a table of 6. The friendly staff did bring us a lot more when asked. We were served 2 platters between the 6 of us, for me there wasn’t really enough meat, roast potatoes and parsnips but for others on our table they thought there was plenty. The food itself was great quality! Loved it. We then proceeded into desserts and finally coffees; a decent selection of both are available from the Sunday menu. I had the triple chocolate brownie with ice cream which was excellent. Whilst we were sat inside due to the weather it is worth noting this pub has a great covered outdoor area with some lovely views. Would love to come back in the summer and sit out there with some bar snacks and a drink! On the whole based on my experience I would totally recommend this pub for a Sunday lunch, I hope to return during the week to sample the ‘normal’ menu soon.

I went with friends to the Royal Oak, Walton on Friday 11th August. When we arrived, we gave the name of the person who had booked the table. The waitress had no reservation for us, despite booking several weeks earlier, and having received confirmation. It was not busy, so a table was found for us. We purchased drinks, and sat at our table. The waitress brought the menus and left us to browse the menu. Several minutes later the waitress returned for our orders. We gave our orders, and the waitress looked confused. She then realised she had given us the wrong menus. The menus were then changed, and we were then asked to choose from this new menu. The "second" menu was not as interesting as the first one, however we made our choices. One of the group of 4 then asked if there was Garlic in her choice of food as she is allergic to Garlic. The waitress went into the kitchen to ask the chef. She returned and informed us that EVERYTHING, yes EVERYTHING has Garlic in it. Even the batter that the fish is coated in has Garlic in it! Unbelievable. Obviously we could not stay, so we finished our drinks, and left hungry. There was a Stoney silence from the waitress as we paid for our drink on the way out. We went into the local town, and got takeaway Fish and Chips. Not quite the meal we had planned to celebrate 2 birthdays in the coming week. 3 of the diners live in the village, and have lived there for many years. It is unlikely that we shall return. A VERY UNHAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Sunday lunch menu - unique idea that you have only the choice of a three meat platter with veggie alternative. Happy not to have to make too many decisions there. We arrived and were offered drinks to take to our pre-reserved table. After 10 minutes or so of not needing to make any food choices I had to flag down someone to say that we’d like to eat! The meat platter arrived plus the various vegetable side dishes. Looked great. Beef just the shade of pink that I like but, where was the promised pork crackling? …. Not there, that’s for sure. Why, I don’t know. Some was brought upon request. There was plenty to eat between the two of us and a good supply of gravy. Cauliflower cheese could have been cheesier but that’s perhaps just my taste.. Too full to require a dessert, we went to the bar to settle up. Slight confusion there, over whether or not we had paid for our drinks on our way in. We assured them we hadn’t and therefore they had under charged us. Not a flicker of acknowledgment of our honesty. Summery - food good. Portion size, good. Price, reasonable. Service, not so good. There doesn’t seem to be anyone directing the many young members of staff who reside behind the bar and seem to mill around somewhat ineffectually. What could be a slick establishment is relatively lacking. Doesn’t make you feel appreciated somehow, which is a shame. Hence I can only rate our experience as ‘Average.’

Nestling on the south side of the A39 in Walton, you find the Royal Oak, a wonderfully typical country pub. But a pub with a difference. Walk in to oldie worldy building and instantly greeted by three friendly staff with the warmest of greetings. There were six of us, we had pre booked and I do so recommended you do likewise, We were quickly seated and drinks provided, ordering done , the meal begun, we all had starters and one can only say treated to an artform of exquisite food, the chef has an absolute affinity with what he is cooking and the Royal Oak is so lucky to have him and the team that run this outstanding restaurant. If you want great quantity of cheap food then off you go to the Brewers fare or the Harvester, BUT if you really want to enjoy and be amazed at what you are consuming then the Royal Oak is the place for you. Cost, at around £30 ahead for 3 wonderful course's you just can't go wrong. We will all definitely be going again, so go on , get on the phone now and get booked in, and oh I can definitely recommend the duck mmmmm wonderful

The beer was good, the food was good, the welcome was very friendly. This pub is easy to find, and has a comfortable atmosphere. It deserves more trade.

Poor value for money. Not enough meat on the platter for sunday lunch, when i expressed to staff there wasn't enough meat i was told well that's it. Meat and yorkshire puddings cold so it was microwaved to reheat!!. Desserts were very poor value for money small is an understatement.

Lovely food just a shame the yorkshire puds were a bit crispy/burnt and could of done with more cauliflower cheese for 8 people!

Had a really yummy Sunday Roast today with the family. Served on a board, sharing style, you get x3 different meats all cooked to perfection and lots of trimmings. Desserts were also really yummy- the brownie and sticky toffee especially were delicious! Will be back!

Lovely atmosphere. Lovely food. I had the steak it was cooked perfectly melted in your mouth. They had skittles in the other room but as soon as food service started they locked the door to keep it quiet and stop people walking through the restaurant. Perfect will definitely return

Don't be put off by the slightly shabby look of this pub from the outside. Go inside to a lovely traditional feeling pub with charming staff and an interesting menu. I had the best beef in a focaccia bun ever, (apparently the beef is cooked in a water bath) with fries and a lovely, and different to the norm, side salad. Even the focaccia itself was scrummy. My companion had what she said was superb fish in batter. The garden looks over stunning Somerset countryside and is a place to enjoy and relax. And the prices are very reasonable.

Fantastic meal made from locally sourced ingredients. Olives with rosemary foccacia (bread is to die for!) to start followed by the tastiest lamb shank I have ever had, served with cabbage and bacon mash and root veg. The flavours and textures were amazing. No room for dessert but finished with good coffee. Will definitely be back very soon!! Highly recommended 👍 😊

I've used the Royal Oak at Walton on and off for over 50 years and I'm so pleased that the pub has been totally renovated and improved, yet still retains it's oldy-worldy features - the new beer garden is super, as is the car park, but one has to be extremely careful pulling back out onto the main road. I have yet to eat at the pub but intend to do so shortly as it seems most popular. My only negative comment is the condition of the real ale - I had a pint of Tribute and a pint of Exmoor Gold - I could'nt finish either as both pints were cloudy, ice cold and verging on sour - I've been drinking real ale for over 60 years and in my opinion, it should not be served chilled, but preferably straight from the barrel - check out the Halfway House at Pitney for the proper way to keep and serve real ale. Other than my personal gripe, a really nice pub, definitely worth a visit !

Unfortunately, a power cut had happened when we arrived, so food was delayed. However, we were kept informed, and when power was restored, it wasn't too long before the meals arrived. Absolutely lush!
