This one provides quite a contrast to all the fairly new shiny craft beer bars in town, in that it is a traditional decor two-room pub whose interior has clearly seen some life, something that you could also say about it’s clientele on this particular early Friday evening. But it was a friendly enough pub and you can overlook the shabbiness of the interior for the decent range of ales on the bar. For our visit five different ales were spread amongst the eight hand pumps in the shape of TT Landlord and Landlord Dark, Acorn Royal Oak, Titanic Plum Porter and Saltaire Blonde and good to see a CAMRA discount offered. A good option when you fancy a decent ale in a more earthy old school environment to all the new shiny craft beer modernness that is trying to turn Halifax into the Shoreditch of the North.

I have been here a couple of times before. A really atmospheric old world pub with a great selection of 6 real ales. Paulicarus spotted Hey Jude, from local small brewery Darkland. It was a bit thin with not much flavour but a new brewery for me to tick off. The Taylor's Landlord was great. There is a pool table and TV's. Not far from the Piece Hall. Well worth a visit.

Great pub! Proper fires like a country pub but in the town centre and amazing bar staff, always friendly and there's plenty of entertainment with dj's and karaoke on a weekend, also accept camra card for the real ale drinkers and have a far few on offer plus guest ales, they dont do food but a selection of warm pies/pastys are good on a winters day, they also have a pool table.

Have been coming here a few months now. The place exudes a homely atmosphere, managed by an eccentric Southerner ("an agent of the company he calls himself") and some lovely, always pleasant and helpful staff behind the bar. The manager, known as Damo to his friends, will often be found pacing the pool room like a tiger - where the Royal Oak is home to a strong pool league team - but he in fact looks after the flock of old and young players alike much like a pigeon looks after its newborns, with encouraging remarks like "are you alright?" The Royal Oak is doing extensive renovations upstairs for a private members club (a nominal monthly fee will give you access and discounted drinks) which will see brand new pool tables and big screen tvs installed and some magnificent views of town. The upstairs part of the pub in fact shows off just how old the pub is, with beautiful old stained glass and timber beams which originate from HMS Newcastle. Karaoke on Fridays from 8pm whilst most Saturdays are given over to a DJ. Friendly locals and good prices with a good selections of gins and real ales. Transport by luxury bus is regularly arranged for away games of the towns football club. The pub is easily accessible from the train station on foot and a stones throw from Shay Stadium.

Royal Oak - Halifax The most traditional of the three Halifax bars I visited, and none the worst for that. The building is quite mock-tudor and mock Georgian in its exterior and retains some of their character alongside modern embellishments. Fone service and decent real ales in quite a large pub. Great little place just on the outskirts of town. The staff are some of the kindest and friendliest you'll ever find, even going out of their way to support disabled people (I know that sounds odd but as someone who works with disabled people a lot I've found that often places don't bother as it means them making an effort). I can't say it's the best selection you'll find in Halifax (given the Victorian is up the road) but if you want kind, welcoming and wonderful reception, this is somewhere to consider.

Ordered two dishes. One soup and sandwich and some white bait. Soup was cool, sandwich was actually a uncut breakfast muffin with cheap grated cheese with very few onions, and had hairs in it. The whitebait had my wife suffering from indigestion and tummy upset twenty minutes after we left . Won't be returning πŸ˜”.

This place looks lovely but that's as good as it gets. We booked and arrived on time. The waitress took us to a table but didn't say anything. The table wasn't clean, no drinks menu. We waited for over 15 minutes before we had to be asked to be served. The waitress was horrendous she didn't look interested and got our drinks order wrong. The main meal was good but we hadn't even finished our food before she tried to take it away. It then took us another 30 minutes to get the bill and another 20 minutes to pay. Overall: not great, the staff need training in actually serving people... Another good course would be... How to greet people.
