Having read the menu outside the pub, we decided to go in and have lunch. When I ordered my food, each meal was £2 more expensive than stated on the menu I'm the window. We ordered Lasange for 12.95, which was 9.95 on outside menu and and a Bratwurst hot dog and chips which was 9.95 but 7.95 on outside menu. As we had already decided what we were having I didn't look at the menu on the bar. The staff were very welcoming and service was good. However, the quality of the food was probably the worst that I have had for many years. The Bratwurst (German sausage) was not a Bratwurst, it was just a normal hot dog style sausage, so this was not as described on the menu. The Lasagne was truly terrible. The mince was bland and grey, with bits of chopped tomato in it, the white sauce inside the lasagne was lumpy and curdled with lumpy bits it it. The only good thing were the chips and coleslaw. I mentioned to the bar tender about the Bratwurst, but nothing was offered with any kind of appology, however, it did look as if he was a new member of staff. The meal did not represent good value. The atmosphere was mediocre as the music was loud enough to prevent a conversation across the table and although not against the law, people were vaping. It's a shame really, as over the past 40 years, I have frequently visited this pub, but not for about 12 months, and it does have a good atmosphere and is used by many locals, but i rally think that they should improve their food offering.

Matthew was behind the bar and overseeing everything around the pub even with regards the food that was perfectly cooked, presented and priced. The flavours were amazing, home cooked Tomato and Pepper soup and then i had the home cooked steak and ale pie which was magnificent and the filling and gravy was amazing. I strongly recommend a visit. Staff excellent. Food amazing, price well worth every penny. We will definitely be visiting again in the not too distant future. All in all a great evening of food and drink. Made to feel so welcome from a call earlier on in the day to make sure a table could be secured then upon arrival treated exceptionally well. A must for anyone around the area or passing through.

We attended on a Tuesday early evening after a day walking our three dogs. We were killing time walking round the market place in Malton waiting for restaurants/pubs to start serving food from 5pm which is standard for most areas. When we walked past the Royal Oak they had a board outside advising they were serving food all day. We thought we would give the Royal Oak a try, we were not disappointed! We were warmly welcomed, the lovely owners provided biscuits for our dogs. They could not do enough for us, the service was first class. As for the food it was excellent we had the chicken basket and the nachos with chilli beef and sticky toffee pudding. It was great value with a couple of drinks it came to £34. This place is a hidden gem and I strongly recommend to anyone to visit you won’t be disappointed.

We arrived in Malton just for the weekend and thought we would spend the evening checking out the local area. The royal oak is fabulous, friendly bar staff and great drinks. We were really intrigued what the bunny chow was and even though the kitchen had just closed they made us one. All I can say is AMAZING. Lamb curry cooked to perfection and served in the tastiest bread roll You need to try you won't be disappointed 😁

We visited The Royal Oak in Malton Marketplace for an early evening meal and were thoroughly impressed. The standout dish was the Bunny Chow with lamb curry—rich, deep flavour, and with perfectly cooked, tender lamb. It came with a generous portion of chips that were properly crispy, as if double-cooked, and a fresh side salad. The Mexican pizza was another highlight—clearly made fresh, with a great base and that unmistakable finish from a proper pizza oven. The service itself was warm and friendly, not to mention the open fire making for a fantastic experience. We can’t wait to return!

Nice little pub, drawn in by the “free pool” sign in the window, who can pass up on that? Pool table is SPOTLESS, it’s either brand new or very well looked after. Cloth is perfect, even the cues and chalk are flawless, very rare for a pub. Also have two dart boards with the correct oche spacing, they clearly take their pub games seriously, I wish more would! Good Guinness, props to the barmaid because she even poured a two part pour. Good selection of gins the other half said.

We visited here for lunch to catch up with family who Live in Malton ,he did say that he hasn’t eaten here since new ownership so what follows is not his fault in any way , at 11.55 we rang the doorbell as requested a guy opened the door and said to give him 5 minutes they were still setting up ? Firstly should this not have been prepared previously ? So to the food !!!! We were with a 9 year old and 5 year old who had the children’s menu , I ordered the smaller size portion of scampi which was £7.95 it came with 4 yes 4 pieces of scampi ( which we all know take no preparation) peas and a few anemic looking chips ! My partner ordered the salmon salad £12.95 for this you would have expected a fair size salmon portion , trust me it was the thinnest sliver of salmon ( you get 2 this size at supermarkets for £2.99 ) the dish was served in a small soup bowl so you can imagine portion size ! The salad was mostly potatoes ! My friend had chicken salad again it was I would say a half portion of chicken cubed n fried, salad the same minuscule size , our cousin had the fish n chips which was ok size wise , when we questioned was this a starter portion we were told no ! Our cousin said his piece about charging extortionate prices for that size meal , he got a reply if well we get oaps in here that are totally satisfied ! Errrm we aren’t oaps and we’ve ordered from a main menu not oap one !!!! Nevertheless we shall never return as this is terrible portion size for what they are charging ! He did knock the salads off the final bill but we would have gladly payed full price for decent portion sized food , avoid if you’re hungry or expect decent size for you’re money , we’ve ate at coach and horses rillington yesterday and they can teach them a thing or two about great food and proper home cooked fayre decent prices and amazingly presented and tasty food , also we ate at Dawnay arms which would also take some beating . I don’t like writing bad reviews ever but don’t like being fleeced either !

The Royal Oak has to be the friendliest pubs in Malton now - the new management out their heart and soul into creating a very welcoming atmosphere. They are trying hard to build up a good weekend live music scene, and from what I have witnessed are succeeding. The choice of beer and spirits as great, and we LOVE the outdoor beer garden round the back. Their pool table is first rate and always a joy to play, whether is be to take a break (!) from the frequent visits to Malton's many food markets, or just to get out of the rain. The Royal Oak is an ordinary pub, and in these days of themed pubs, cafe-bars, sterile micro breweries and the like, I mean that as a huge compliment. The decor is typical town centre pub with a mish-mash of chairs, stools etc., with the expected pool table and television. Most importantly however, there is a very good selection of well-kept beers served by an absolutely charming lady behind the bar. Quite simply, this is a nice, ordinary, friendly pub. What more could you possibly want?

The baby changing area was in the ladies toilets and I found these quite spacious too. Prices of drinks were reasonable but my family had said the level of hygiene was not clean enough for us to eat there. I think in old pubs with carpets there is a damp smell which couldn't really be helped without a refurb of everything.

Order for food took ages to be served at the bar then took 40 mins for 2 x chesse and tomato panini to come. Chips for myself a little greasey, panini not fully cooked through. Apologies were made for long wait as they were "extremely busy" I notice they are advertising for kitchen staff so perhaps this has had a knock on effect on speed of service. Filled a hole.

After going to Malton from Scarborough, my friend & I walked around Malton looking for a place to eat for lunch, where we wanted a prawn sandwich with Marie Rose sauce, but every café seemed to put mayonnaise with the prawns, which we don't like. When we saw the menu outside of the Royal Oak stating they did Marie Rose sauce with the prawn sandwich, we went inside. Although it was a bit dark inside, it was quite welcoming. The young lady behind the bar was very friendly and we placed our order. When it came I was a bit surprised as not only was there salad garnish and coleslaw with the sandwich, but chips on the plate as well. I said I didn't order them, but she said they came with order (it didn't say), but they were delicious! Home made and nicely browned. We had a coffee and a pot of tea with the order and found the atmosphere very nice with music playing in the background.

Lovely home cooked food, nice atmosphere. Had to wait about 35 mins but still get 5 stars as it was excellent and near the end of sevice. Definitely worth a small wait for such a lovely meal.

Friendly staff - good pint of Yorkshire Terrier bitter - wine only by the 175ml bottle. Reasonable modernish decor.

I have given this place plenty of chances over the years with it only managing to be average at best! But this time it’s gone and topped this with what can only be described as disgusting!!! How they dared to give this to a customer amazed me and has just confirmed everything I already knew about this place. Staff that don’t care and have little to non experience in food preparation….award winning? What a joke

Lovely place really, but at the end of the day it's just ice cream.

We had an enjoyable and excellent meal accompanied by a bottle of wine, all thanks to Malton Relish. For Valentine's night, we chose to 'Dine at Home' and ordered a dinner for two from Malton Relish. The meal was fully prepared, and the chef provided clear reheating and cooking instructions. The Truffled Risotto with Mushrooms and Parmesan was superb, and the Lobster Thermidor served with smashed new potatoes and a watercress salad was terrific. To top it off, we enjoyed an Espresso Martini cheesecake with fresh berries and pouring cream. The wine included was a Mâcon-Charnay, which was a perfect choice for the meal. This fantastic dinner for two was excellent value for money at just £50. We loved our first 'Dine at Home' experience, and it certainly won't be our last. Well done to the Malton Relish team! Thank you for your hard work and attention to detail. Congratulations!
