Balderson's Cafe, Thornton Dale, North Yorkshire in Ryedale

Lovely place really, but at the end of the day it's just ice cream.

I'd go as far to say this is the best ice cream I've ever eaten... New York cheesecake ❤️❤️

What a lovely hidden gem. We sat out the back under the hanging grapes which are being used for grape vodka favours for one of the owners wedding. Such a nice chilled out place to sit and relax. We have the cream scone. I have never had a cream scone as big as the one from here. It was huge. My photo doesn't do it justice. To get out you go through the gift shop. If I was able to, I could spend a fortune in there. So many nice things on sale.

Have used the cafe several times, most recent visit was just for ice creams which are excellent 👌🏻 probably my favourite place for ice cream, cafe does great food and everyone is super friendly.

Very disappointed Baldersons's only a baked potato as a vegan option and no cakes at all. There is even a sign which basically says vegan is a no no. Asked for a coffee which was served with coagulated soya milk and had to be exchanged. Visited a cafe in Whitby the day before and there were several vegan cakes, even a scone! They were not marked as vegan and were being consumed by non vegans as at the end of the day they were delicious cakes! No vegan ice cream, just a sorbet, no thanks! Please try harder.

Poor intimidating atmosphere which started when reading a note on the menu ‘Don’t ask for tap water…. We don’t have to provide it etc etc … . Purchased two drinks and some cake -and was met by very brusque young woman , acted as if it was a burden to serve a customer. Flap Jack was dry . strawberry milkshake was crusher… the cheapest. Prevented from leaving the same way we came in, by arms folded scowling matriarch. Instead forced to weave through the outside dining space into the cluttered gift shop. I can appreciate the business desire to maximise customer experience of the goods and services on offer, but this was a step too far. They seem to own the bakery, the cafe, ice cream and gift shop .. I guess not much competition.

this is a review of the bakery. I cannot fault the bakery shop.I absolutely love their Russian slices and buy several at a time! they freeze brilliantly and defrost with no change in constancy etc .I have never had a problem with any of their other cakes either,the pastry on the bakewells is second to none!

Huge selection of ice-cream flavours and cones. Nuts, flakes and sprinkles toppings available as extras but must be the only ice-cream parlour in the world to not offer sauces.

Stopped off in Thornton le Dale on way to a nearby village. So glad we called in at Baldertons. We had an excellent lunch of scampi, chips, peas and salad, also steak and kidney pie, peas and chips, along with tea and coffee. Great value for money and delicious too. Very busy but it's obvious why!

Quick visit for tea and chose a Cheese Scone & Millionaires Shortbread. Not disappointed, friendly staff, reasonable prices, very clean and lovely cakes.

It's the best for ice cream, I know people who drive 30 minutes just for an ice cream here! If there's a queue on a busy day be patient! It's worth the wait 😁😁

We were staying in the village for 4 days and and called in for coffee every morning, brunch on 2 days and also a late lunch. Everything was 1st class - food excellent, coffee really good. The staff were all lovely, exceptionally helpful and friendly, and as the weather was warm and sunny we were able to enjoy the delightful garden area. Looking forward to a return visit soon. Thank you to you all.

Kinda under whelming. The sundaes didnt look like the ones in picture on board. The ice cream was kind of bland and tasteless. Nothing special. Bit pricey too.

Untrained staff got the order wrong ordered bacon and egg was given egg on its own then have to wait outside for 15 minutes eventually someone came out with the wrong order. Tried again the following day as thought the staff were new was served hard bread that has obviously been left overnight. For the pricing you'd think they would have fresh produce. Still only allowing two people in at a time from covid times living in the past. Not the best place would recommend the petrol station in pickering if you want a decent sandwich rather than here

Brilliant easy to read menu that catered for gluten free food and even adapted their menu to cater for us. Staff very friendly and helpful too. The gift shop next door was absolutely amazing.

We had an excellent experience. Breakfast was great staff friendly and polite. Stayed in village every visit to shop served by lovely lady nothing to much trouble. Nothing negative at all !

Soup of the day was mushroom which when it arrived was the colour of mud & the consistency of thick wallpaper paste. Enforced exit by one way system through gift shop was not appreciated.

The best ice-cream experience. We always pop here for a treat even though it takes us at least an hour to get there.

Plenty of choice and excellent ice cream at very reasonable prices depending on what cone you choose, highly recommend.

Slightly disappointed after numerous must try recommendations. It is Icecream but not as extraordinary as some suggested. If you fancy Icecream its good icecream in pleasant village setting, so enjoy.

Lovely ice cream parlour. Great selection. One queue for 2 windows, though no one in the queue notices and the poor man at the far window can't shout "next please" loud enough over the sound of the traffic.

Delicious ice-cream, but service leaves a lot to be desired. Visited today with our 3 year old who wanted a soft vanilla icecream cone with blue bubblegum syrup on it. It seemed like a simple request as I could see from the pictures of the bubblegum sundae that they had blue syrup, but apparently this was too much to ask. "We don't do that" is the response I got. I pointed to a picture of the bubblegum sundae. The server said "We have the sauce but we dont put it on those icecreams". I explained it was for a little one who had her heart set on a cone with blue syrup, but I was met with the same response. So, looking for a solution to my predicament, I offered to pay the higher price of the sundae but for them to put the contents on a cone instead, to which I received a very large huff and eye roll before she said "Fine, I'll just do it", turning around like a disgruntled teenager, muttering under her breathe to her colleague as she put the sauce on, not trying to hide her displeasure from me at all. Yes, in an ideal world my daughter would've just had the bubblegum sundae but she is, after all, only 3 and wanted an icecream cone! Really struggling to understand what the issue was here. Surely being accommodating to children is something an icecream parlour would put high on their list?! Some customer service training seems to be in order. Loved the icecream, but will not visit again. Shame.

Foods very good for a small cafe would strongly recommend

I’m not fussed about ice cream...BUT.... Me and my girlfriend ordered the Nutella Sundae and I didn’t order anything. I thought I might taste it and have no more than a sample taste of my girlfriends order. HOW WRONG I WAS. I think i ate more of it than she did! It was delicious, very well made, layered properly, it was very delicious. Absolutely lovely. Can highly recommend!

Popped in here for bite to eat, staff very polite and helpful. We ordered beef stew with mash and peas & 2 paninis and drinks.. Coffees where really nice and my Mrs & daughter enjoyed the paninis unfortunately my beef stew was revolting was so bland and tasteless with mash being reheated and dry unfortunately I could not eat it... This was first time we have eaten here but have had ice creams several times which are amazing... Shame my food let it down this time.. Will be back try something different next Time I think. Thx

Called in this afternoon - most delicious ice cream. We chose chocolate and New York cheesecake. Flavours are just divine. This ice cream is up there with the best have ever tasted - even from hols in Italy. Lovely staff too. Will be back again soon.

Very good - can't fault it. Not exactly an ice cream place due to the time of year but you can get ice cream in the summer. I would describe this place as a cafe, Bakery. Pleasant, helpful staff. Fairly large space with ample seating. Reasonable priced snacks etc which you order and pay for at the front counter. Definitely be back in the summer or sooner.

We were a large family group who popped this afternoon after a day in Dalby forest. The icecreams were delicious but my husbands banana milkshake was the worst he's ever had and he's 74! So disappointed

Nice coffee and ice cream. Lady serving the ice cream was lovely. However the lady serving the coffee seemed miserable and unengaging. Very at odds with the rest of the experience. Bit of a shame.

You have to spend over a fiver to pay on card... good luck with that! Pretty sure we had three cheese and onion pastries a sausage roll, flapjack and two jam tarts and still want enough! It’s a right bargain and the food was ace, wouldn’t touch a Greg’s when you can get proper grub like this! And it was open on a Sunday! Brilliant

Almost an essential stop if you're passing through Thorton-le-Dale. Not the cheapest ice cream place, but certainly good. Eat in it buy from the street. And, if it's chilly get a warm cuppa.

We have stopped here for ice creams for as long as I can remember (40 years) it is still as good as it ever was and you get served quickly even if it is a busy bank holiday.

A wonderful bakery and cafe. Lovely staff and the food is excellent. Only gripe is the polystyrene containers used if you buy a sandwich. For a place in a National Park they should really rethink their packaging.
