Lovely village pub with great atmosphere, staff and food. Nice touch as they knew we were bringing our small dog, in having dog biscuits on the table & water bowl on the floor. Couldn't fault this place but be aware it does not have a car park.

Have been here a few times now and the staff are always so friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is very welcoming and the food delicious. We visited with all our guests after our wedding and the staff went above and beyond, kept the kitchen open longer and were just lovely! We had the best time! Cannot recommend this pub highly enough. We have brought the dogs and done some of the walks from here too which is a great way to burn off that delicious pudding so it’s guilt free 😉

Update: May 2024 Still brilliant. Excellent selection of beers that changes frequently. Great staff. Lucky to have this place within cycling distance. Lovely village pub offering an excellent selection of drinks including beers (including Ghost Ship and Doombar), wines and gins. Fresh, but sympathetic decor that complements the buildings original features. Toilets are clean and always well stocked with paper and soap. Pleasant outdoor space with play area for younger people, long fence for bike leaning and lots of shaded tables if you're not keen to top up your tan. The food here is excellent and it is a good idea to book a table as this place has a very good reputation and can get quite busy. Really nice people behind the bar. Not open on Mondays or Tuesdays, but very deserving of a visit.

Two of us visited this cracking pub for a Sunday lunch and could not have been more pleased . Having sat out in beer garden on a lovely sunny day we went inside where our table was waiting.I went for the roast beef . That and my friend's vegan option were both good and plentiful . The cakes we had for dessert were yummy but too much for us both. At £75 for two mains and desserts plus drinks and bottle of Shiraz it was not overpriced either. The service was laid back and relaxed but still efficient. We will return for sure . Thanks all at The Royal Oak :)

A very nice village pub, sat inside as hot outside although garden looked pleasant. Mainly Sunday roasts on the menu. Only ones in restaurant as most outside so no atmosphere. Food looked lovely but although a good serving of pork there was a lot of fat. The only vegetables that were cooked were the potatoes. The carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and beans were virtually inedible as knife would not cut them and very hard. It’s a great shame as it really is a pleasant pub.

So The Royal Oak today a pub that doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Today's food was perfect. Starters were Piri Piri chicken wings and red mullet with pineapple salsa Main courses were one trio of meats and one turkey Roast dinners Dessert was chocolate & coconut torte. Loads of gluten free and vegan options on the menu. The pub and garden looks amazing and the team were great, once again fair play to the chef it was another hot one.

Had heard very good reviews about this lovely village pub. However, I must say it was the worst customer service and meal that I have ever had! Meals came out individually and either over cooked or under cooked! My chicken tagliatelle dish came out last….20 minutes after everyone else’s! The chef had forgotten my meal and it took two members of staff to confirm what I had ordered?? When it arrived it was basically packet gilled chicken, chopped mushroom and pasta in a cream of mushroom soup. I could only laugh at it…. I would say that they should stick to just being a pub and serving drinks…. But the staff couldn’t even get them right either….. I think this place needs to be on Gordon Ramseys Hell’s Kitchen…..and sack Basil Faulty……

Visited at lunchtime and had the fish n chips. The fish tasted strange - I ate it but had no idea what I was eating. I asked the waitress after the meal and she checked with the chef who said it was haddock. I've never had haddock like that before: it wasn't horrible but it wasn't nice either. But haddock? Hmm. My friend had calves liver and mash. Whilst she said it was okay she thought it tasted like run of the mill pigs liver. In addition we were charged £5.20 for two soda and limes! We did complain about that and they reduced the cost to £1.20 each, still a huge profit for them. All in all it was a pretty poor experience and we won't visit again.

Oh dear what a disaster Sunday lunch was. Roast beef dinner, well that's what they called it. Beef that couldn't be cut even with a steak knife. 2 stars because the ale was well kept, other than that, we were disappointed. Ordered the ‘meat on a board’ for two to share. This consisted of two Leaves of lettuce filled with pieces of chicken, mixed with other unidentifiable ingredients, warm (yes warm!) Pork pies, cut in half, Scotch Egg (s) cut in half, some Pork belly pieces (actually quite tasty) and because of a shortage of ribs, we opted for some Fish (Red mullet maybe). The whole dish resembled the aftermath of a Stag Do’s buffet - chucked on a piece of wood! The fish was undercooked and seemed ‘off’ (it stank), we were frightened to eat the Pork Pies (warm!) and only managed to finish parts. Not a pleasant experience and I expect they’ll be some retort from the establishment, but really, they ought to have a undercover shopper to take a look at what comes out of the kitchen! Staff were pleasant and courteous.

This pub has a beautiful summer garden and we enjoyed watching the variety of wild birds that flittered around. Whoever maintains the garden does so with pride and with knowledge of how to create a wonderful space. The same pride and knowledge is not represented in our experience of the food. It took over an hour to receive a burnt fish & chips and a "fish burger" that was a tiny bit of cheap fish cake. The fish cake tasted unsurprisingly dreadful, more potato than fish, a frozen bought in effort and was returned uneaten. After the hour's wait the kitchen was closed so no alternative was offered. The fish & chips were supposed to come with creamed peas, but instead came with plain frozen peas. The claimed home made tartare sauce was out of a jar. The batter was dark brown and bitter and clearly over cooked to the point of being burnt. The chips were equally over cooked and dry. In our view the chips were frozen not fresh. The chef needs to take a leaf out of the gardeners book and take some pride at what leaves their workplace, as we left hungry and bitterly disappointed. That food should never have left the kitchen in the state it was and is hugely disrespectful to the customer. The service was friendly but slow. We weren't offered an apology nor were we asked how the fish & chips were, despite them clearly being picked at and mostly left. The pub wasn't busy with perhaps 4/5 tables occupied by the time we left. This pub can clearly do better judging by the over positive reviews. It manifestly failed for us, on our first visit as locals.

We visited this pub on Saturday after having heard really good things about it, however we were really disappointed. We ordered two lots of fish and chips with mushy peas, both turned up with normal peas and really skinny overcooked fries. If we had been told there were no mushy peas left when we ordered that would have been but we weren’t told that until we asked. A couple of tables nearby us had normal chips rather than fries with their fish so we can only assume they’d run out of them as well. Again the veggie pie we ordered was meant to come with fresh veg but came with peas. The bacon in the BLT we ordered was very fatty had barely been cooked. They forgot the chips and again when asked we got sent a bowl of fries that were so overcooked they were inedible. The bread for both the BLT and the sips we had was just your standard pre sliced Warburtons type bread, nothing special. The service was also slow throughout. On the plus side the soup was really tasty, as was the fish itself and the veggie pie. We complained and the owner/ manager seemed very apologetic, taking the cost of the food off our final bill. It feels as if the kitchen was just low on stock and the chef was having a bad day, so we would be prepared to try it again in future as others seem to really rate it.

We travelled an hour to visit this place and we were not disappointed. Firstly it's in a lovely little village and the owners and staff have worked hard to retain the " heart of the village feeling" It's quite a balance to achieve both a village pub and functioning restaurant and they achieve this really well. The two ladies who served us in the restaurant were friendly and helpful with a great sense of humour. The staff behind the bar went off to restock the tonic I asked for, really helpful. Secondly the food, I can honestly say that our food was delicious, arrived quickly ( it was fairly busy) and was presented well . If I had a complaint it was my steak was a little sinewy but this is a pub restaurant not a 5 star steakhouse. Everything else was perfect and I loved the chilli and crab! I also got the opportunity to try their new Christmas cocktail espresso martini with vanilla . Cost for 3 courses a cocktail, coffee and a round of drinks just shy of £70 not too shabby I think. Only issue is parking which isn't a huge issue as long as the locals are happy with continued parking on road. Brilliant place only sad it isn't a little closer for us to visit more often .

Very disappointing roast dinner on Sunday 26th may for 3 people: it was Luke warm and the lamb was awful no decent slices it was like the end of the joint , when mentioned to the waitress she advised they were short staffed, did take off 20% which worked out £14 which I was still not happy with as didn’t eat even half but left it at that. Never again.

Underwhelmed: Starting with the positives, its a nice location if you are staying more than 1 night or if you arrive early you can walk to Helen's bay. The staff were the best thing about the hotel / my stay. the food was also quite nice, if you live close by, it would be a nice place to grab a meal or a drink in the dog friendly pub. The rooms or at least ours felt dated, I get the whole "country pub" style but it just looks old and dirty. No massive issue with the rest of the room in terms of design, but the rooms are not sound proof. You hear people talking next door, you hear every door in the hotel close, we heard the hoover being whacked off every skirting board. The spa is adequate for a 1 night stay. But its very disappointing that the smoking area for a wedding venue is beside the spa. While you relax in the spa if there is a wedding you can hear it so it kills the atmosphere of relaxing in the spa. The also is nothing stopping anyone walking through the spa, while no one is supposed to do it we watched a group of 8 people walk through the spa after breakfast (not challenged by any staff member either), video and stand about chatting. Because the spa isn't the largest, when they start doing day spa offers it will quickly become overcrowded. I wouldn't want to see the spa if all the rooms in the hotel were booked. I get what the Galgorm group were trying to do with this hotel, but the hotel isn't up to par. We had vouchers for our stay but if we hadn't I would have been very disappointed at the price. No one from the hotel has asked for feedback following our stay but I would not recommend this hotel for a stay / spa experience.
