There should be a government warning about this pub. You should be warned about how lovely it is. So nice to walk into a pub that's still a pub. It's how a pub should be. We went with friends for the first time last week and we will certainly visit again. Great atmosphere with friendly locals, lovely staff and then the food ‼️ OMG this is what pub food should be like. Fresh, cooked on site and a desperate Dan size portion. I could not recommend this pub any more. It's a proper pub with proper grub. Go you will love it.

We arranged to meet friends for Sunday lunch and sadly no roast lunch but what a selection of home-made dishes all at very reasonable prices. The landlord and his wife were charming and the locals seemed pleased to see us ! We had a great time with lovely Dartmoor beer and will definitely be back

Visited twice while on holiday nearby and really liked the atmosphere and the friendly couple who run the pub. It’s a traditional British pub stuffed full of naval memorabilia, very cosy. Only four tables so book If you want to eat, we tried the lasagne and the chilli and both were good, there is a long list of specials too.

Went with another couple, pre booked as they only have 4 tables. Sadly no steaks but it was a Sunday. Had gammon, oh my what a lovely meal, all cooked beautifully but the portion size of the gammon was huge. Definitely visit again. Dessert was delicious too.

Part of our quest to try 2 or 3 pubs a week since moving to Devon we called in on recommendation by a neighbour. Wonderful find. A cozy and ancient pretty pub. We were too late for lunch but the short menu looked promising. Traditional pub options. A "proper" traditional bar without the intrusion of modern influences. Friendly barman and landlady. Only a few locals use it apparently. What's the matter with you? Use it or lose it. A village with a pub adds £15k to the value of your property!

At last the sun appeared and me and the missus along with our son and his partner decided to have a decent meal out. We were not disappointed if you have the yearning for a good old-fashioned pub then this is it. The meals are great and cooked by a good cook. If you have the gammon streak as I did then be prepared, it is enormous. However, one important factor to bear in mind, payment is by cash only(no cards) Sit back and listen to the Janners talk my native tongue. Yes, there really was a Royal Oak Tree which stood outside but is sadly now gone. Everyone is very friendly and if you can understand what the 'yokels' are saying then join in

Wow, what a great place this is.. The pub has a wonderful olde worlde charm and atmosphere that you just don't see any more with all these modern gastropubs. We were visiting in a group of 8 and the landlady kindly offered to open early for us as we were in the village before opening time. The menu was brilliant. Good, honest pub food at very reasonable prices. The portions were huge and everyone enjoyed their meal. This place is a real find and not to be missed....

And I'm not talking about ya thin cut tasteless stuff the call ham nowadays . Real tasty thick cut slices that literally covers the entire plate , gorgeous chips on top . And if you can't eat it all , they will wrap it up for you to take it away Can't fault at all

My wife and I stayed at Haldon View Campsite just up the road. We took our Tibetan Terrier called Harold for a great half hour walk along the valley beside the stream though the woods to the pub which is very small but very friendly. Nice beer and we had straightforward steak and chips and scampi and chips. We were pleased at the pricing as well. A great experience in all.

We dropped into this pub a few years ago, on this more recent visit, on our recommendation we went with two other couples. Would it be as good as we remembered. Yes it is! A proper pub, no fancy frills, great food, great beer, welcoming hosts, classic olde English pub ambience, nowhere does it like we do. Full of interesting beer, Admiral Nelson and Winston Churchill nick naks and memorabilia. We had a great lunch at a reasonable price. Other reviewers have mentioned the ham egg and chips and I can confirm the portion is huge, ham delicious. You need a really healthy appetite to finish it, or maybe share. Next time in the area we will be dropping in again.

We camped just up the road and were told by the owner of the site that this local pub served amazing food if we needed lunch. We took his advice and weren't disappointed in the slightest. It was the most amazing portion of ham egg and chips I think I've had.... There was enough ham on my plate for me to be stuffed, and to give my son (who only ordered chips) a few slices too. My youngest had sandwich and chips and the wife had a jacket spud and although some may say that all this is simple food, it's just as easy to get wrong and believe me the Royal Oak did not get it wrong!! It was fantastic and we will be back. Fantastic service and great food at a very cheap price.

Stumbled across this tiny pub recently. Well kept beer, fascinating naval memorabilia and very professional and welcoming landlord. If your looking for a real Devon pub that is only a mile or two off the beaten track, then this is well worth a visit. Food is unpretentious pub grub, if slightly over-priced.

The recurring theme of the reviews for The Royal Oak is a pub with a warm welcome. This was definitely the case when a friend and I visited the pub for dinner one quiet Tuesday night. The landlord was very welcoming and chatted about the locality and the history of the pub. The decor is almost museum like with every surface of wall and ceiling covered with memorabilia and pictures steeped in character. The food menu was more than adequate and the specials were listed on cards displayed on one of the walls adjacent to the bar. I chose chilli beef with rice and salad from the main menu and my friend chose the rib of beef from the specials. Both came to our table in good time, freshly cooked to order. We enjoyed the meal very much and have to say that it represented good value for money. In conclusion I have to say that the food was good, the atmosphere warm and friendly, the beer was excellent and the surroundings absolutely quaint and charming. One of Devon's little gems.

A good pub but a little tired. Average pub grub, not really worth making the trip. Sensibly priced but the food was nothing special, one of our two meals had to be returned to be reheated. I have always liked the pub and it was my choice to feed here but it needs a bit of a rethink, foodwise.Staff friendly and attentive, as good hosts should be.

We visited the Oak three times whilst on holidays, first for a quick drink as it had been recommended as a good real ale pub. We went a second time for food but slipped up as they don't serve on Monday night so we went the next night and it was well worth it. We had the lasagne and the ham egg and chips. Really good food and an all round comfy and friendly pub with lots of character. The dog even got his own drink and a parcel of the left over ham that we couldn't manage as you do get loads!! Will definitely be returning when we are next on our hols and would certainly recommend it!

We popped into this lovely little pub enroute to our final destination in Buckfastleigh. Our main intention was to get lunch as it was 2pm. When we walked in we were greeted by the very friendly bar lady who advised us that they were shutting at 2:30 but she could make us a sandwich. We both went for ham, I had pickle and husband had tomato. We both got loads of thick cut ham on lovely fresh bread. My husband said it was the best ham sandwich he had ever had - and hes had a few ! We were not drinking so cannot comment on the beers. Toilets lovely and clean. Very sweet outside area at the back, along with gnomes and other ornaments. We wished we were staying in the village so we could go and visit this charming pub one evening. Quirky interior with something of interest for everyone. Almost forgot to say, our final destination the following Monday we stayed in a pub in Dorset and had cheese sandwiches for one of our lunches which were three times the price of the delicious ham ones at the Royal Oak.

My wife and I visited this pub quite recently, with the intention of tracking down my son who lives in the village. Visiting parents, are not high on most men list but we found him, having a quick half.We have been in this pub briefly before. Very noticeable is the warm welcome afforded to everyone by the landlord, his good lady and all the locals.Really nice friendly country pub, with a lot of Devonshire atmosphere and conversation.. Can get a little crowded, but this adds to its quaintness.Have not dined here, yet, but from what we saw, meals were quite ample and looked truly scrumptious. Thinking of dining here in the near future, especially as at 80 years,I have just been awarded twenty five pence extra on my pension, and do not know what to do with it?

We visited this pub for an evening meal because we had read on trip advisor that it was worth a go! The pub is quite tiny but has lots of atmosphere and is very quaint and a bit quirky! At first we thought we had walked into a 'locals' pub but the Landlord and Landlady made us very welcome! There was a wide range of good old 'pubgrub' but everything we ordered was available. My daughter has some dietry problems and they really accomodated everything we asked for. The food came out quickly and was very hot and good size portions. All the meals were really good and we all cleared our plates. The pub had some very interesting books and games and we had a really fun evening playing 'Shut the box' after our meal. The price of the food was very reasonable and we all left feeling we had made a really good choice going there! I would certainly recommend it!!

A group of 5 of us ended up here for lunch after a local walk. A friendly greeting and a welcoming fire were much appreciated. The was plenty of choice on both the main menu and the specials menu. All items ordered were available and arrived without undue waiting. The portions were very generous, all the cooked food items were hot and served on warm plates. We all thought the meals were good value for money. Both pub and toilets were clean and well maintained. Only two small niggles.....two of us had curry and asked for mango chutney, which was unavailable. We were told that chilli sauce was served with their curries instead. This didn't really go very well. One of our group had a BLT sandwich, which was very good, except that the rind had been left on the bacon, which made it tricky to eat. That apart, we would certainly return again.

We booked a table for 11 and walked out from Newton Abbot. We had a few pints before lunch and the beer was excellent. Various members of the party had ham, egg and chips (huge portions), thai fish cakes (superb) lasagne (excellent) and steak (brilliant). This is a great traditional pub with well kept ales and a menu offering real pub grub that is beautifully cooked with really good sized portions. Some of us even managed pudding (the sticky toffee with custard was fantastic!). A real gem that we will be visiting again very soon. The 5 mile walk back to Newton helped to work off all the food!!

12 of us arrived and they were happy to accommodate us. 10 out of the 12 meals were very good portions and lovely food. My wife had a chicken and rib combo which was in edible. The chicken was pink on the inside and was very very fatty. Another member of the group had the same and had the same problem. I mentioned this to the landlady mid meal as my wife couldn't eat it but was not offered a replacement. When paying at the end I quite politely said to the landlady that I wasn't happy paying £8.50 for a meal that my wife hadn't touched. She then got very defensive and rude. She was unwilling to take criticism for a meal that she had supposedly been cooking for years and had no complaints, I find this very hard to believe. While I was not then charged for the meal she made it perfectly clear how she felt about that. It's safe to safe we would not recommend and will not be returning.

I wish we had more time, as I frequented many pubs in the UK over the years and this one will always be one I think of as among the most fun. What a great tradditional Inn. 800yrs of history and character. Superb location, albeit down a few country lanes. All bedrooms with ensuite. Spacious and comfy. Fully loaded pub with snooker room, and darts room, bar and lounge and quiet reading snug type lounge. Large dinning room with breakfast bar. Large beer garden. Fully operational commercial kitchen. Stock your own bar and music player that feeds music to all areas. We had 20 family members in our group and all enjoyed the facilities. Would recommend to others who want a family holiday. We all did our own sightseeing in the daytime and came home to the pub to eat as a family and enjoy pub type nightime, with games, music, chat and a drink. Awesome!! Lastly, great and friendly host, always on hand if needed, but allowed you to enjoy the facilities. Superb !!

We were welcomed by the head bar man, what a gentleman & a legend taking the time to talk to us. We had visited Buckfast Abbey & drove through this quaint little village, parked cheaply in the pay & display & popped into this small village pub. Great little traditional pub, pool table on the right hand side, very clean & throughout. Good selection of beer & ales. We sat in their well tendered gardens. Definitely recommend for a stop off.

A lovely much needed addition to this town! Always greeted with a smile and a chat. Friendly place to grab a bite to eat and drink. You never know what is going to be on the menu, always something a little bit different but usually a safe option for others wanting something more usual. However I would say a set menu is something this place could benefit from. Especially being a mum and wanting to take my child somewhere, it’s not always convenient to just see what’s on the board today, as it’s not always child friendly! But other than that it’s a nice little place that I hope sticks around for a while

This is a little gem in Teignmouth! Very understated from outside, but once inside the staff are in full customer care mode. We were greeted by friendly bar staff who explained our table wasn’t ready, however we could have a drink at the bar. All good for us as we enjoy a relaxed dining style. No stress. We were shown to our table and the menu explained. We knew it’s was tapas but the waiter explained the rough number of dishes to order as a couple. We ate everything from the standard tapas dish, Patatas Bravas, to a gorgeous Chicken dish with Thyme & Lemon, Chorizo in red wine, Lobster Arancini and Goats Cheese. Every dish was really lovely and felt like a unique experience in the area. We didn’t experience the cocktails, but finished dinner with a liquor coffee. The bill was a pleasant surprise too as we were estimating a lot more! Would recommend and will definitely be returning when back visiting family in Teignmouth later in the year. Thank you all!
