Owner shouted a lady out the pub after she went to the loo. That is not what a respectful staff member should do and I’m disappointed that that would happen in the local pub.

Today we went for a nice walk at Melton Country Park and we’re looking for somewhere both animal and toddler friendly. The website looked very nice but I was worried it might be a bit nice and we might not feel welcome... how wrong I was. We were seated promptly outside in the marquee and immediately wound a high chair for little one. The service was attentive and food was excellent. They even brought our daughter a “pink plate” That she was requesting. We had 3 courses and were out by 1250 ( we wanted to be on our way by 1300) and had a lovely meal. Five stars from us!

Went for a drink and made a last minute decision to eat. My partner had sausage and mash which was ok ish, vegetables way over cooked. Sausage not cooked equally on all sides. I chose Gammon egg and chips. It arrived with one egg which had burst on the plate and it should have had two. Chef will send one in a minute I was told as it had been burnt. The egg on the plate was not cooked enough with raw egg white. Then the 2nd egg appeared which I sent back as it too had burst on the plate and still was not cooked. I just said don’t worry about it as first egg had not been pleasant! The server said he would refund our drinks. How? We had paid cash at the bar. No apology came verbally but when we got the bill £1-39 had been deducted as a goodwill gesture. I didn’t want the money just an assurance that it’s not how they operate and just a sorry. Well I’ll vote with my feet and not return. Should have known really as it was practically empty.

Amount of food left on the plate by 17 people is the clue. Starters luke warm. Festive Dinner, i e a deep-fried, battered or bread crumbed (couldn't tell) ball of reconstituted turkey with wet-look bacon. Tasteless, almost impossible to cut into and therefore pushed aside. Even less appetizing the companion same-sized fried ball rammed with stuffing. Why make these look like nobbled Scotch eggs without any flavour? The veg were edible and plentiful. Then ... the fish fillets swimming in a lake of murky mushroom sauce with no veg? We eventually spied some crushed and flavour-free baby broccoli pressed under the overdone fish, one end so dry it was like cardboard. Then - the Christmas Pudding with custard. Bring on the vast soup bowl filled to the brim with mysterious white custard in the midst of which was a dark brown island in danger of floating to the surface. Dire presentation. The pudding tasted okay, the custard cool but edible although the red berries topping had not been trimmed so were sharp as razors. This is not the way to start the culinary festive season. Had I been hosting I would have requested a full refund. Guests don't do this. Very poor. Culinary lessons need to be learned fast ...!

This place has been up and down for awhile but it seems to be defintley on the up!!!! Came here for Sunday dinner and I must say, it has to be the best one I’ve had in ages! It’s not as cheap as a toby carvery but you definitely get value for money. Quality over quantity… I did have the lamb which was abit chewy but no complaints about anything else. My co-diners said the beef and chicken were to their liking. Not tried any other foods but if the Sunday dinner is this good, I hope the rest is too! Staff are friendly, drinks are reasonable. They advertise happy hour Mon-Thurs at certain times ans all day on a Sunday. The place has a cosy feel to it. My only issue is a couple of the dining room chairs were wobbly and on the out I think. Will be returning very soon.

The very first time we ate at lunchtime at the Royal Oak Pub and Kitchen the fish and chips were lovely. Hand cut chips, tasty fish and great mushy peas. Since then we have eaten there several times in the evenings and not really had a meal that was enjoyable. We drink there often and during the hot summer spent several evenings on the outdoor patio. Which is OK. The Royal Oak desperately needs money spending on it. The patio area is not good, the windows are rotting and the front looks as if it could do with renovating sooner rather than later. The drinks are on the pricey side. During the winter months the lovely log fires are welcoming. The staff on the whole are friendly and helpful. Someone with a little insight and cash could make this rather mediocre pub, wonderful.

We've been to the Royal Oak three times this year, and I think we'll probably be skipping it completely now. It's had a troubled history since the previous owners, Moleface, chose to run it into the ground to wind down the business. Last year it reopened under new management, who did a great job refurbishing the place and restoring a bit of class. Sadly, it hasn't lasted. We took friends from out of town for a meal there last moth. The menu was very fancy 'gastro pub' style, which is what the Oak was always famous for. Unfortunately, the chef simply couldn't deliver the menu. All of us received overdone, tiny portions. When a dish is advertised as coming with 'duchess potatoes', I don't expect to have to search for the tablespoon-sized dollop under my dry, tiny partridge leg. We all ordered dessert, and that was also disappointing. We got back home and had to whip up some snacks because after two courses we were all still hungry. Given that it's one of the most expensive places to eat in the village, we weren't best pleased. Last week I visited with my wife for drinks. There were very few people in considering it was a weekend, and the staff were busy chatting to the regulars sitting at the bar. All of them stopped to openly stare at us as we entered, like we were in a western movie. One of said regulars was vaping non-stop - he actually didn't stop for the whole hour we were there, and smoke was drifting through the bar. Not illegal of course, but not a good look, especially when the bar is open to the kitchen. At around 6.50 for a pint and a half of lager, it's pretty pricey too. A real shame - it could be such a nice place, but it's quickly gone downhill for the second time.

Thursday lunchtime meal. Greeted warmly and shown to a table in a quiet corner and on a cold day the room was warm. The waitress was warm and explained the menu. We liked the Minted Lamb pie with chips and mash. The service was excellent with lashings of gravy. The pie was a proper pie with a good amount of meat it a pastry case. Chocolate Briwnie and Crumble for pudding. The meal was hot and presented nicely we finished off with a nice cup of tea. We had a lovely time and would recommend the pub. We'd been helping our daughter to move home and it was our Anniversary the following day so we decided to treat ourselves to a meal on the way back to our caravan site near Radcliffe. We think we made a good choice from the restaurants on the main street. I had chicken with sweet potato mash and spinach with the Royal Oak jus, which was delicious. My husband went for the beefburger but he wasn't so happy; it was very thick and a bit pink in the middle for his taste. It also had some seasoning he wasn't keen on, but he shared my Royal Oak jus and said that improved the taste! For dessert we both chose sticky toffee pud with ice cream and it was extremely good.

Had Sunday lunch here and the food was good but could have been warmer. The service however needs attention. The two waiting staff coped as best they could but it was obvious that they were overwhelmed. About and hour or so after we arrived more staff appeared (assume some phone calls were made). I know it is early days but one thing a new landlord should do is to make sure his staff are trained to do the job, and that includes the bar staff as well. (Apparently they did not have any lemon slices). We asked to see Simon, who we were told was the new man in charge but he was nowhere to be seen on Sunday!!! Keeping my fingers crossed that the pub and the staff get their act together and make it a great local again.

Eight of us visited the Royal Oak for a family "get together" to celebrate the birth of our latest addition to the clan! The staff couldn't be more accommodating. We had a position by the window which was ideal for Great Grandma (84 years young) and enough space for our youngest's (of 11 weeks old) "luggage" for the trip! The menu was full of choice. The Yorkshire Pud was the size of a Flying Saucer! The chosen Roast meats were cooked to everyone's taste and the vegetables were just right. Now, wait for it; leave enough space for the sticky toffee pudding. Pure indulgence! I admit to "chickening out" and chose a plate of divine (rich) chocolates, with a coffee to compliment! If your usual target is West Bridgford for that Sunday Family gathering, but find the usual good places too crowded or hurried, put The Royal Oak on the menu; it's good! And Radcliffe on Trent village is a pleasant change to Nottingham and West Bridgford. Enjoy!

We hadn't been out for a meal in a while so we thought we would try somewhere new for a change. I should have listened to my internal alarm bells seeing big signs for sky sports outside and the locals having a fag were f'ing all the time. We were seated in a very average and poorly designed restaurant compared to today's standards. music and noise bleeding in from the bar. I had a starter that was a few peas and parmesan on a bit of bread for £7. The main course was a cheese pie, thus arrived in a metal tin with wafer thin pastry top, a few beetroot to the side and watercress. The pie was a liquid mess, a spoon would have been more use than a fork, all in all a large starter than a main. I asked for the bill and they said everything OK? I am not a good liar and had to confess the pie was the not the best. I would say here probably the most disappointing ever. Give him his due though, the manager went out to see the chef and came back saying they will take the pies off the bill. Will we see you back again? Probably not I replied and departed. Somewhat ruined a hopefully nice night out.

On arrival as pointed out on a previous review it was clearly obvious we were not welcome in this pub. After deliberating if to order food or not because it was so oddly quiet, we decided to do so. The only single reason for this was because I have visited The Woolaton many times and believed as part of the same chain this would be a similar place in terms of atmosphere/food etc. how wrongly mistaken I was...I am strughling to think of a time I have been to eat where the atmosphere has felt so hostile, be it from the locals, or the staff. Who clearly did not like foreigners being in their pub. The bar staff seemed to be more intrested in taking every locals drink orders than our food order. I am still trying to understand why we got the starter and main bought out to us at the same time. Why would anyone want this?!The single only reason I have given this place two stars is because the food was actually pretty good, and actually not that bad value. It's a shame the service was so appauling that it detracted from this.I suggest the chef gets a job elsewhere, your talent is wasted in this place. To summarize; a confused pub lacking in identity, it needs to decide what it wants to be. A good restaurant serving good food, or a local pub where "outsiders" aren't welcome because I'll tell you one thing for certain - being both is not working

Having been to the Larwood Voce, the Royal Oak's sister pub I was eager to try the Royal Oak.What a sad place, as we entered onme of our party nearly tripped on the uneven flooring. We bought a round of drinks and sat in the pub area for a pre-dinner chat. After a few minutes we were ushered to our dining table. We all had Belly Pork as it was so good at the Larwood, admittedly a year ago. Unfortunately the experience was not to be repeated. The Belly Pork was tough and tastless. Mine was so hard on the bottom that I could not chew it. The accompanying roast potatoe was hard too.The starter and wine were ok, but after a disappointing main we missed out the desert. I dont think the waitress was disappointed it seemed thet she just wanted to get home or at least rid of us.Although some small parts of the meal were ok the whole meal and Birthday occasion were ruined by the disappointing main and impersonal service. I would not trust my money again to this pub or pub chain after all it is the management who are responsible for the operation.

Having lived in Radcliffe for the last 4 years, we can remember when the Oak first opened and how amazing it originally was. The food is still very good but service, cleanliness and atmosphere are lacking. We've just been for a Sunday supper in the restaurant and our table was surrounded by at least 5 others that were full of dirty dishes and glasses and our cutlery was stuck to the table. The staff apologised for the mess, explaining someone had phoned in sick but then did nothing to clear the tables. For two hours. We had to wait a fair while for our drinks to arrive, our food order to be taken and then subsequently arrive. The food is as good as ever, but the atmosphere has gone downhill, along with the clientele. Our dinner was accompanied by loudish music and sports on the screens dotted around the pub. The smell of cigarette smoke permeated the bar and restaurant from the open door to the chav terrace outside, whilst the buckled laminate floor rose like a continental divide in the bar, still not fixed from the flood in July.Come on Moleface, you can do so much better and, until you do, we'll be eating in the Manvers down the road.

On arrival it was obvious that the staff were just not interested and to the point of being rude....When the food finally did arrive it was warm and looked like it tasted and that was of a poor standard, cheap produce and the meat tasted like something served at a hot dog wagon!!!Atmosphere??? conflict of interest is how you can liberally describe the Oak,with gangs of chavs drinking outside with regular visits to the toilets where the heart of the pub seemed to be, why was this??? Ha ha...And in the dining area where most of middle England seemed to be totally oblivious as to what was happening right under their noses!!Interior is tired and worn and the wooden floors are sticky with drink and dirt, the bar was badly attended and again poor service was speciality of the day.On leaving this soup kitchen for the homeless with overpriced out of date food on the menu we were pleased to receive a parking ticked slapped on our windscreen because we parked in what we thought was the Oak car park!!Obviously the pub is doing so badly that it has to get extra revenue charging people to park. Maybe something to do with frying the food in dripping. Couldn't manage a sweet course. All in all and enjoyable occasion with a reasonable bill at the end

we've eaten here before, and had thoroughly enjoyable pub food. Enjoyable, but still pub food.Went to a gastronomic evening where 5 courses were accompanied by wine that was chosen by the pubs wine supplier. Total cost was £35 head. The food was far removed from pub food, every course was a triumph of invention, taste and presentation. I particularly enjoyed Crab and Scallop cocktail, and the main course of lamb cooked 3 ways, which were crispy sweetbread, roast rump and mini shepherds pie. My companion raved about the crispy fried cheese, with rhubarb puree - what a combination! The wines matched the food, and the guy telling us about the wine was knowledgeable, but thankfully fairly brief. The service was excellent throughout. All in all, it was a great night out, and really good value for £35.I'd recommend eating at the Oak any time, but especially if there is another Gourmet Wine Evening.

I am a massive fan of the Moleface pubs and regularly go to The Lord Nelson in Burton Joyce. I hadn't eaten at the royal oak before and decided to try it for a Sunday dinner. I was really surprised that it was it quiet in there for what should be a peak time! The food was gorgeous as I was expecting, I had the scotch egg to start, which was just mouth watering. And then I had the beef for my main. It was so beautifully cooked. The Moleface pubs really know what they are doing with their food. The service was great when I was in there, very attentive to us but not in our faces. I'd go back to the oak definitely, and I hope the next time I go its busier, as it really deserves to be a thriving pub in Radcliffe.

As a frequent visitor to moleface establishments and too many loyalty point cards than i care to admit... i like the manager at larwood and voce. in my honest opinion..owen has changed the vibe at the Royal Oak. He s professional and efficient yet unobtrusive and engaging. I like his respect and recognition of regular clients..yet his ability to meet my demanding party s difficult culinary needs. for this reason i regularly return. if you ve walked and driven past but not been sure..try it..it might surprise you. and E? lose the attitude

Went for dinner on a Saturday evening so the place was quite busy. The Oak has tried to raise its game since Moleface took over and overall a food effort.I tried steak which was very good, well hung and from a local source. The Lard Cooked chips were a bit underdone but tasty enough. I'm always suspicious when my dinner is served on a well worn piece of wood! How can it possibly be hygienic? The prices are high for what is essentially food in a Pub not a restaurant. The Bar side of the Royal Oak still attracts the people that have been going in the place for years. Draw your own conclusions. All in all not a bad meal but too expensive and customers too crowded together for me.

The Royal Oak in Raqdcliffe is a Moleface pub - I've been to one other pub in the chain, The Lord Nelson at Burton Joyce, and it was fantastic, so I expected the same level of excellence here.It comes close, but perhaps doesn't fully measure up, which is why I gave it four stars instead of five. The main reason for coming here is the food - it is genuinely excellent, with locally sourced ingredients, great presentation, and a monthly menu to take advantage of seasonal produce. It verges on the pretentious at times, but the prices aren't too bad, and if you take advantage of the 'Magnificent Seven' deal it's amazing value (this is seven favourite courses for seven pounds each before 7pm).The pub side of things is nice, if a bit too shabby really - more downmarket than chic - but it can get uncomfortably busy at weekends. The layout is awkward, meaning that if you sit down at certain tables you'll struggle to get out again when it fills up to standing room only. The main reason for deducting a star, though, is the service - depending on when you visit, the service levels can alter dramatically. Sometimes you get friendly bar staff and attentive servers, but I've had snooty waitresses who think they work for a Michelin star joint, and bumbling barmen who've messed up virtually every part of my food order. The worst is when you can't get a seat in the restaurant, and so you get asked to sit in the bar instead. This is fine, but when you order your food they send someone to take a credit card from you as security! I was dumbfounded - I'll certainly never eat there without a reservation again.Overall, it sounds negative, but there are a lot of plus points: if you sit in the restaurant area, expect a really great meal.

We eat regularly at both the Royal Oak and also The Lord Nelson in Burton Joyce - both Mole Face pubs which are lovely , great atmosphere, allow well behaved dogs in with you whilst you eat , good for families, just perfect - no overwhelming sports TV or music - just everything good you used to get in pubs. Food is excellent - always well cooked, well priced, and changes often so there is always a good choice. I can't recommend them highly enough. Five star !!

Ate here the other week. Nice pub atmosphere. Great service, couldn't be bettered to be honest. Food reasonably priced for the quality you get and also quite generous portions. Loos clean and modern (always a good indicator). Quite extensive wine list. Lots of specials on the menu with different things on different days. Lunch menu also looked good.l

Recently opened under the same management as the Larwood and Voce in West Bridgford, and the Lord Nelson in Burton Joyce. Very good food - lots of traditional British dishes, very well made. Superb chips with gravy - whatever else you're eating, order some chips. Reasonably priced, and a good selection of beers. Service is charming, but sometimes a wee bit slow- it's early days though, so should improve with practiceOverall an excellent addition to Radcliffe, straight in at number 1.

Visited today (a Saturday) for coffee and cake with a friend. The cafe was almost empty with 2 staff working, yet it took forever for drinks to arrive. We asked for a menu and the waitress practically threw it at us. My friend ordered a fruit tea and asked that the water not be boiling hot, but she was told that the water came as it came (adding a bit of cold water before adding hot water would have sufficed). The server was quite sharp and blunt, we weren’t happy, so we left and spent our money somewhere else.

Stopped in for lunch and some shopping. Tried fish n chips in cafe one with beans and other mushy peas. Very large fish, all fish unlike some the have half an inch batter on each end. Had to wait about 10 mins as cooked fresh and excellent value at £6.99 each.

This is our favourite restaurant/pub and after three years of regular visits and superb food every time, I thought it worth a well-earned high-praise review. Apart from the occasional evening event, (they hold special themed nights from time to time), it's generally lunches we go for. The quality of the food is consistently high and the service very friendly and professional. The menu is understandably quite small, given that everything is cooked to order but seems varied enough for most tastes. Despite the high standard of cooking and produce, the prices are very competitive indeed. It does get quite busy some days despite being a bit off the beaten track, so best to book if possible. There is a large secluded back garden with seating, (where they hold their events), and a good children's play area. The building itself is still an old unspoilt country pub and serves at least two different real ale. Can't fault the Plough at all really.

Food was good however the customer service let the evening down a lot. The food order was taken wrong, understandable. We were charged for the more expensive one, unsure of the difference, I asked about this that was met with the manager being rude and giving us the 50p difference. Not a singular apology, especially with one of our meals arriving when the others were about finished. Ordering deserts was met with more rudeness from her and the whole interactions tainted our evening. After a few times of visiting here we won’t be back as would feel uncomfortable with her service again.
